Actually, since the formation of the Council of Mist, I have not flamed anyone for not snipping (abiding by the Council's mandate to "be as helpful and nice as possible." Up until the advent of the Council, though, anyone posting a message with more quoted text than response text was pretty much in the zone of fire. =) In fact, there may still be a few members of my "fan club" (the Drifting Ashes) around here. Speaking of which, I would like to remind everyone of the importance of snipping when you reply to a post on the list. Snipping means deleting unnecessary material from the quoted message. Remember the rule of thumb: your response should be at least as long (and preferably twice as long) as the quoted material in your post. Some things that you should snip: signature files (assuming that you keep the attribution at the beginning of the quote), quotes (unless you are commenting on them), long rehashes of the thread (just summarize it in your own words), and basically anything that you are not directly and specifically commenting on. I bring this up because I have noticed an upswing in the number of messages where the quoted text was quite a bit larger than the new text. Let's all try to avoid this, if we can. Message-ID: Heya :) I just thought I'd say Hi! and introduce myself to the list before going on about a couple of topics on the list recently as well as doing a little disjointed rambling. Please excuse me for reiterating some old topics that may have been done to death because checking out the archives looks a daunting task! Looking back at what I've read of ML's books, I think I read my first book via the trilogy featuring Talia and I have been blissfully awaiting every single book I could find since. LHM definitely reflects AoQ's ability to incite tears. More so in my case ;) S (If you haven't read the Winds Trilogy) P O I L E R I think it's an indication of how well loved LMH is when you look at the further references to Vanyel's shade in Winds?? Not to mention finding out Firesong is a direct descendent of Vanyel, saych to the core. The little gift of a ?black/red? rose was a nice touch. S P O I L E R For that reason, I think the order that her Valdemar books should be read in should start with her first series as the references that she makes to the past and the book excerpts involving Vanyel make alot more sense! I found that it was definitely helpful to have read the Gryphon books before the Winds and Storm trilogies. I've managed to read most of the Valdemar books (minus those out most recently due to my geographical location), two of the Free Bards books (Is ?The Robin and the Wren? or no. 2 any good? I can't seem to find it anywhere), three of the Diana Tregarde books (My favourite of these was Children of the Night... Was that the first one and is that still in print? Living in NZ with no access to the web makes life rather difficult - as well, I'd love to find out what was the reason for not writing any more Tregarde novels - And if there is anyone willing to send me the webpage - I'd be eternally grateful :), as well as four of the Serrated Edge books. (Is that series complete? I think we'd definitely be in serious trouble with Elves in space. Space Knights anyone? *grin*) An interesting trend I've observed is that it's the Valdemar theme that have grabbed the attentions of the list more than any of the other series considering which theme is mainly used for personas. Is that because they're the most popular (Just looking at the ratio of Valdemar books over the others says something doesn't it?), a consensus reached when the list started or because other lists cover them? Concerning Enya (as well as being off topic for which I apologise) I think it's a toss up between The Celts and Watermark. I also love Clannad especially Legend and PastPresent (the best of). Loreena McKennit's The Visit and ?The Mask and the Mirror? are absolutely beautiful with a very feyish music style (although anything with harps and a wonderfully otherworld/pagan/celtic tone does it). For more instrumental music others I'd recommend include Andreas Vollenweider and Michael Oldfield especially his latest album Voyager. Name pronounciation is a very tricky topic which I'd better avoid considering my verbal command of the English language but I think that it's more a point of what you thought it sounded like when you first read and imagined it to be. As Mercedes Lackey hasn't put out a Lexicon/Pronounciation guide (Has she? Boy would that be SO nice!) I guess it's still up for debate. Hey all, sorry for the short post, but I just : bought The Best of Marion Zimmer Bradley's Fantasy Magazine Vol II : (required for a class I am taking: Fantasy Lit!) and there is a DT story : (by Misty, of course!) called "Satanic, Versus" I am going to read it : tonight! You mean that there's such a class? WOW! I won't mind being part of it! Too bad I'm not living anywhere near a place that treasures fantasy so much.... Heyla Guys/Gals/Whatevers! I'm back from after my prelims!!!!! I gotta say they sucked, but.... Anyway, on the LHM thingey, LHM was the 2nd series I read. MPawn was great from the start, but MPrice was a bit slow. Did any of u notice a pattern? MPawn and MPrice both had: -a "seduction" (though van didn't really seduce 'lendel.) -both shaych didn't know that the other were shaych until later. -one mage, one not-mage (of a pair) -one-half of the lifebonded goes mad with grief when a close relative kicks the bucket. (is it a coincidence that the maddened one is the one with mage-gift?) -one-half of the lifebonded pair dies in the end(the one with mage-gift) leaving the other half crazy with grief and then tries to kill himself. Similar, no? Not that most plots aren't similar... Pronunciation: "VAN-yle" that's how i pronounce it. m'friend goes "van-YELL", so we're currently having a discussion about it..... hehe, converted lessee 4 people to reading misty in 2 years. not bad considering that most pple here don't like to read, much less read fantasy.
