Alright, Ma'ar is most DEFINATLY Leareth. It says so many times in the Winds series, but as I dont have my books here, and I cant give you exact text. The first Misty book I read was AOQ, and I picked it up because there was a "horse" on the cover. I liked it so much that I used to sneak it into class to read it. I got in such trouble from my teachers!!! Anyone else get in trouble for their "obsession" with the glorious works of Mercedes Lackey? ;) As for my favorite characters, I think I like Talia the best because she's so quiet but she's still really strong. And because she's so nice. I also like Kero 'cause she's so STRONG. I like strong women. I like Firesong too, and of course Van. (that goes without saying!) ;) Gala cant be Yfandes because a) there's so many memories of 'Fandes, b) Gala couldnt have got through the trauma of loosing her chosen THAT quickly, and c)she just couldnt be. Hellsbane was a battlestead, 4th or 5th of that name, if I'm not mistaken. But, due to Kethry and Tarma's sisterhood, and the fact that Kero was Kethry's granddaughter, that made her clan and able to have possession of a battlestead. The good thing about battlesteads was their training... no one but their trainer/partner/owner (or whatever would be the best term for that) was allowed to touch them without said person giving the proper command to the stead. That is why it was safe for her to have 'Bane out of the Plains, and why she was allowed to have him in the first place. I have always been curious to know what other people think make her books so fascinating. Thought I would chime in with my nickel's worth! I started out with the Last Herald Mage trilogy - picked it up at the grocery store as I though the covers were intriguing. Although I have enjoyed all of the Valdemar books (some more than others), I have to say my favorite characters are Vanyel and Savil. Why? They seem so human - fallible, but willing to try, learning from mistakes (and sometimes not). Also, in the LHM books, I really like the character development of the secondary characters. Again, for their very real personalities/prejudices/insights. It seems that it's all too rare for books to contain characters who could (maybe) be someone we know - all too often the only characters in a book are either hero's or villains. Misty's books aren't like that - obviously there are hero's and villains - but nothing is black and white. There is good and not so good qualities to most of her characters. Also, the characters change and grow. Well, 'nuff said. Back to lurcking... While Yfandes may or may not be a Grove Born Companion, I very much doubt she is Gala reincarnated. Remember, in the second book of the Vanyel trilogy, Van mentions that Yfandes had had two foals before she Chose him. Also, in the first book of the Vanyel trilogy, Savil mentions that Yfandes hasn't Chosen in ten years, which means she has been around and known to the Heralds for at least that long and therefore could not possibly be Gala reborn. It depends on if you are talking just Valdemar or any. I love the character Lashana from the ElvenBane and Blood books. I think she is my favorite non valdemar character just because the story was unique to me and she was really an interesting character in how she reacted. My favorite Valdemar Character would be Talia just because her gift and the way things fell together with her after such a horrible beginning. You raise an interesting point. I think I need to argue it -- sorry if offend! Since Valdemar requires the heir be chosen, I don't think they can be that picky about male/female. Also, Elspeth did not exactly abdicate in favor of her younger brother... "I, Elspeth, daughter of Queen Selenay and Heir to the throne of Valdemar, hereby renounce my claim to the throne of Valdemar, in favor of my siblings, the Princess Lyra and Prince Kris." So I would think there was no problem with the being son/daughter....my impression has always been that whoever was most suited AND chosen would be the next monarch. Possibly just coincidental, or maybe deliberate, this is the first time I can recall there being even the possibility of more than one choice for the throne....remember in LHM books Randale was Heir long before his time because his father died unexpectedly? There was no mention of other siblings at all....maybe the rulers just often didn't have large numbers of offspring? As a major work, no way. There was no 'spice'. Even though it makes me sick to think of what Talia went through, and I cried when Kris died and left the maiden's hope for Talia & Dirk, those provoking /sad /tension-packed events made Arrows so good! Yeah, Justyn died - but (callous thought), he was kind of old, and his character wasn't very developed. The townspeople were enslaved, then freed, and still were a**es. Darien was unhappy, ran away, found friends, rescued town, lived happily ever after... yadada yadada yadada. I guess if I had to rate it, "FLUFFY, YET ENJOYABLE - GOOD FOR YOUNGER READERS" would be it. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Sep 1997 07:32:19 -0500 From: nme848-+AT+-hecky.acns.nwu.edu (Nina Ehgartner) To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Elspeth's abdication Message-ID: <199709301334.IAA21119-+AT+-hecky.acns.nwu.edu> >You raise an interesting point. I know that Misty covers some of their thoughts and feelings as part of the regular novels, but it wouldn't be hard, and it would CERTAINLY be interesting, to read the other perspectives. I Definitely agree, it could be very interesting if done right! I especially like the idea of having Talia's viewpoint, especially with all the foreigners and trying to calm everyone during the panic caused by the Mage Storms. If Misty could once again capture the magic like she did in AOTQ or LHM. O W L F L I G H T * * * S P O I L E R Well, as a Misty story, I liked it. All the characters were nice, the ending was happy. As a major work, no way. There was no 'spice'. Yeah, Justyn died - but (callous thought), he was kind of old, and his character wasn't very developed. I guess if I had to rate it, "FLUFFY, YET ENJOYABLE - GOOD FOR YOUNGER READERS" would be it. I agree completely, this is not one of Misty's books that I'll read over and over. I was so excited to finally get it, and read it within 24 hours, but even though I was happy to get a new Misty "fix" I was slightly disappointed. This is definitely not one of her better works. Maybe she needs to take a break, instead of trying to crank out the material so fast that her work suffers. I'd be frank about all the stupid things that happen, like the huge lack of comminacation between everybody. All the countries so far presented have been isolationist xenophobs. It's wierd. -- On the way back they sang a number of tuneful and reflective songs on the subjects of peace, justice, morality, culture, sport, family life and the obliteration of all other life forms. ................................
