(speaking of civil war, etc, what was the reason for Valdemar the Founder and his followers to leave their original area? Was it religious persecution or political persecution? [All my books are upstairs and I'm too lazy to go get them.]) I just realized most of my sentences are horribly run-on. Sorry. But it's not my fault. I'm in my fourth year of German. It's a habit by now. Bye now. I should perhaps go study for the 3 tests I have tomorrow. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 01 Oct 1997 19:09:17 PDT From: "Kristin DeBoom" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Braid: Your opinion Message-ID: <19971002020918.6137.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> >And what filks besides "Heralds, Harpers, and Havoc" and "Shadow Stalker" >does everyone reccomend? Well, if you want to Hear Ms. Lackey herself sing, The "Mercedes Lackey Live" tape is kind of interesting. Not a lot of Valdemar related stuff (about 2 songs, I think?), but if you're into C.J. Cherryh's stuff, there's a LOT of stuff related to her work on there. Also some funny filk. Or for non-Valdemar Lackey filk there's "Freedom, Fantasy and Flight" (or some combination of those words), sung by Heather Alexander. It's more New Age-y sounding musically than folksier like most filk seems to be. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 01 Oct 1997 22:42:22 -0400 (EDT) From: AERDEN-+AT+-delphi.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: One true way Message-ID: <01IOB4X52MTE8X2SWJ-+AT+-delphi.com> On 30-SEP-1997 21:52:35.9 mercedes-lackey said to AERDEN me>NO "One, true way." I have been trying Cat--Hm...I'm thinking possibly the point Dirk wanted to make was that for Valdemar to win a war, the other country must lose. So in effect, to pray for Valdemar's victory is to pray for someone else's defeat--and by extension, to pray for someone else to suffer or endure the privation that you don't have to, because you've won. There's also an existential thing--if you believe something strongly enough, you believe that all people should think the same way. This would run counter to the 'No one true way' philosophy. Just my two marks' worth. I have been trying for years (well a couple of them at least) to articulate my gut-feeling explanation of this passage in the Arrows book, and never could come up with a statement that satisfied me. Yours is an exact concise statement of what I have been feeling but been unable to articulate. (With your permission, I would like to add this to the FAQ file I am trying to build). The second point is a very important one, I think. I have always had a feeling that Misty's living in the Tulsa area may have been in the background of this passage. For those who don't know, Tulsa is jokingly referred to as the "Buckle of the Bible Belt" because of the amazingly large percentage of fundamentalist Christians that live there (and the large number of important "born again" Christian schools, such as Oral Roberts University and Rhema Bible College). Anyone who lives in the Greater Tulsa area is constantly having to deal with people who feel that believing strongly in something entitles them to right to impose on others (not all Tulsans are like this, of course--just a lot of them). Many of my acquaintances in Tulsa are perfectly capable of praying for ruination and suffering for anyone they don't like, because they believe that person is evil (i.e. does not believe the same things that they do). Even some people who I would term friends spend a great deal of time praying that God will *make* someone believe the way they do. After having lived in that kind of an environment for half my life, I can sympathize with Misty's wish to create a haven (hmmm, interesting choice of words-- coincidence?) where people are forbidding to pray that their own beliefs will prevail over the beliefs of others. In other words, they are required to respect other people's right to diversity. Novel concept, huh? In Tulsa, of course, there are people who would consider it a good excuse to rebuke the demons that have possessed me and made me say it. Oh well. As long as they don't actually try and restrain me (so that I can't just leave), I'm perfectly willing to let them pray. =) May the seas be your solace and the forests a refuge for your spirit, Cennydd Councilor of Mist Kenneth Allen Hyde | No matter how subtle the wizard, a knife Univ. of Delaware | between the shoulder blades will seriously Dept. of Linguistics | cramp his style -- Old Jhereg proverb kenny-+AT+-Udel.Edu | A mind is a terrible toy to waste! -- Me //www.ling.udel.edu/hyde/prof/ken.html ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Oct 1997 17:50:49 +0100 (BST) From: Melanie Dymond Harper To: mercedes-lackey Subject: ADMIN: a quick reminder Message-ID: <199710021650.RAA00478-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk> Just a reminder of the way to leave the list: send mail to listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk leave the subject line blank -- or, if you are on AOL or some other system which insists on having a subject line otherwise it fills it in for you, use "No Subject". I would like to do that. My thing would be, I'm bisexual not even straight shyach so people would really stay away from me. Because of that I would be really blunt (I am) and either celibate or pretty randy. I also wouldn't be good with people. Also reclusive.
