And one more thing, since I am here. Vanyel 401 said: I have a question......Can a person with mindspeech speak to anyone in that fashion or does the target need to have thought sensing in order to hear the mindspeaker?? I have read several times, though I can't remember the exact references, where mindspeaking was done to those who did not have the gift. It seems as if I recall someone sitting there with a dumbstruck look on their face when they heard ' the voice'. And along the same lines, I am now reading WOFury. On page 43 (paperback) Gwena says to Elspeth: :It wasn't entirely gossip, dear,: the Companion said, in Mindspeech pitched only for Elspeth to catch. Apparently, those with mindspeech have the ability to choose their recipients. I have read similar examples several times in the ML books. Kero had some mindspeaking abilities, but she did not 'hear' Warrl speaking to Tarma. She did not know Warrl could mindspeak until he chose to speak to her. That is when he deceided to train her, since he could hear the 'screaming' of her thoughts since she was untrained at shielding. So I guess a lot of it depends on training. Okay, this is getting just a bit out of hand. The Tayledras Mating Circle Joke was mentioned in one of the Elspeth books, but it has not, AFAIK, ever been a real joke that was posted to the list. Which means that, unless someone decides to come up with one, the TMCJ is not going to get posted (I think that this deserves adding to the NewbieFest...makes mental note). Now, on to one-liners: stop that! Seriously, saying "sheeps" and offering variously flavored bribes does not excuse sending one-liners to the list. They put an unneeded strain on vanyel (the mailing list server) and they are annoying to many people (not to mention that they cost money for those who have to pay for download time or by the message). Apologizing for something that you know is rude does not make it okay to do it. It is still rude and still against the guidelines for this list. Now, admittedly, some rules are firmer than others, and sometimes you may violate a rule on a very rare occasion and people will forvige you. However, I have noticed that many people are posting several one-liner requests (often with quite extensive signatures, occasionally with a comparatively large amount of quoted material, et cetera) and this is really inexcusable. So please, let this list be what it was intended to be: a place to have real discussions about Misty and her works. Everyone on this list seems to be intelligent and creative, so I am sure that rather than posting an endless (God, I hope not!) series of "me-too's" and one-liners, let's post some longer, substantive discussions that are on topic. If, at the end of such a discussion (or even at the beginning) you want to put a little request for a joke, or something, that would be fine and dandy, but don't just post the request and an obviously pro forma apology. Oh, and for anyone who has joined, or rejoined, the Misty List recently, the updated semi-official list FAQ (known as the Newbie Fest) can be found at the following URL: http://www.ling.udel.edu/hyde/pers/misty/newbiefest.html This document answers all sorts of fun questions (such as the sheep thing), explains the basic rules and guidelines for polite and responsible posting on the list, warns about the things that will specifically get you kicked off the list (DON'T POST EXECUTABLE OR GRAPHIC FILES TO THE LIST), and explains who to contact for further help/info (The Council and other volunteers). LOL at MorningStar, who found the Mating Circle joke in WOF.. I _have_ to pick those books up. (WF, an answer _either_ way, please? I'm reeeeally tired of saying that.) Who actually changed the lightbulb? Ah... er... Dirk. Right, with his fetching gift, and all.... And Talia can catch him when he falls.. >Hey, Lord of Fluff...want to start an order? I think I'd make a great Lady of Fluff... Can I be an apprentice? Pleasepleaseplease? I have credentials.. I've filked all but Shadow-lover on the ShadowStalker tape into songs about my IRC friends.. And I wrote that lightbulb joke that started this entire thing (have too much time on my hands? No, not me.). Okay.. now, back to normal.. Or, as normal as I get.. > But, we already know that there is some kind of bond between Heralds so that everyone knows when someone died. Why wouldn't >that bond have told Dirk if Skif was alive? The Web, of course.. Though, I don't think we ever found out exactly how this works. Dirk would know a Herald was dead, but not which Herald, where, -- only Talia and the strong mindspeakers were even able to tell how Christina died, remember -- and why. He wouldn't know if Skif were beyond help, of course, and his weak mindspeech gift, plus Cymry being unconscious, would have added to that suspicion. Aphrodie wouldn't have been able to tell, either, since Skif's link; his Companion, was unavailable at the time. I think.. Question; Why would anyone trust Lores to train anyone, let alone someone who must be stable and trusted to rule? Sure, he might be good hearted, and all.. but as Savil said, he's a fat-head, and that doesn't sound like someone who should be advisor to an already traumatized Tashir. And another.. Why would the Companions in SB leave Urtho's tower? Companions, I thought, were bound to the service of people, and as such, had to help them... by leaving the tower when they might possibly be useful -- and keeping in mind, these are Companions yet to choose -- wouldn't that be detrimental to the people at large? Half off topic comment.. I read "DragonsDawn" the other day, and found myself bored by it; the same feeling I felt after reading Storms and Mage Wars. I reread the book, looking for the reason, to see if the three indifferent thoughts had anything to do with each other. There upon, I discovered one thing -- I enjoyed any part inwhich Sean and Sorka starred, any part that had their romance and their character development, and simply was indifferent to all this... :shudder: Dare I say it? Plot... ;) Which is why I love the Arrows, the V&H trilogy, and LHM.. Great character development... You just _have_ to love them. A Text Book Example.. Chapter 3.2 Love, Lifebonds, and Stupidity; Are they all interrelated? Vocabulary words Denial Dense 2x4 Frustration Pg. 131 Pg. 118 >From Misty's work, we'd have to say yes. Let's examine this. First, we look at Raven and Magpie; who -- while we don't know if they're lifebonded -- are certainly in love. Now, taking these two, we see DENIAL, the result of complete idiodicy and DENSEness on the part of these two lovers. Within the book, its completely obvious for the readers that these two are completely head over heels, but stubbornly refuse to admit it, in the phenomena called ego. Obviously, in this case, Love and Stupidity are interrelated, one leading to the other, as they DENY what is truthful, their love. Next, we take Talia and Dirk. In these cases, we are told it is certainly a lifebond, and even the supporting characters have figured this out! Now, here in this case, sometimes and sometimes not Talia seems to realize this... and then forget. We assume this is typical. Dirk, who acknowledges his love for Talia, unlike those of the earlier case, refuses to tell her, or even talk to her casually. This is do to a lack of self esteem that tempts you to lock Talia and Dirk into a room, and just let nature sort it out. Talia, also acknowledging her love, is overwhelmed by problems, and avoiding Dirk, and would also be solved by that room experiment. Thirdly, we examine Kerowyn and Eldan. Eldan does try his best to retrieve Kerowyn in this case, but, due to the phenomena called "life" (Here, we have yet to figure out exactly what this is), they are unable to meet. However, Kerowyn avoids him purposefully, obviously trying to cause herself internal angst. Stupidity, in this case, applies more to life, than either of the characters. A curse on reality, then! Lastly, we look at Vanyel and his various lifebondeds. These incidents cause much FRUSTRATION on the reader, and tempt them to hit Van over the head with a 2x4 and knock some sense into him, for however great, wonderful, honorable, heroic, etc Vanyel is, he isn't all knowing, and thereforth, is extremely dense in the area of his personal life. On PG. 118, we are told of Vanyel and Tylendel's romance. Here, both want something they outlandishly assume they can't get, but obviously, as proved PG. 118 and onward, can. Since this doesn't work out quite successfully, we move on some thirty five years later, and on PG. 131, we find Stefen and Vanyel's romance. In this, Vanyel is completely unknowing of Stefen's real intentions, and even that he is shay'a'chern, which wouldn't be too hard to find out, considering its all over Haven. Stefen, of course, doesn't think of just telling him this in the first place, which would solve this debate. In ths, we conclude that stupidity, lifebonds, and love, are all interrelated at a deep level. Whenever love or lifebonding appears, there can be no doubt that stupidity and denseness shall follow. Section Review 1. What qualities of denseness are present in Raven? What are they caused by? 2. Name three solutions for Dirk and Talia's problem, excluding the one in Arrow's Fall. 3. What problems did Eldan and Kerowyn incounter? 4. Why is the author of this post doing this? Is she really this insane? Lock them up together in a tower room until they figure things out. << 3. What problems did Eldan and Kerowyn encounter?>> A) When they met, he had to get back to Valdemar to report, she had to get back to the Skybolts, and her sword was attracting priestesses like picnics attract ants. B) She wanted to stay in charge of her own life, and didn't see a place for herself in Valdemar. C) He had trouble reconciling himself to the fact that she earned money by fighting, instead of having loyalty to a cause. << 4. Why is the author of this post doing this? Is she really this insane?>> Good question. For that matter, why am I joining in? (Well, I guess knew I was this insane....) <> Well, lessee.. does a certain person (whose name shall be withheld) telling another someone (whose name will also be withheld) about how badly he's crushing on a third party (whose name is inconsequential), when the only reason he's crushing on said third party is because she reminds him of the second party and he doesn't think he can get said second party, who is all the while pining after him but refusing to tell him so because she thinks he wants the third party, count? For instancce, in Fury, Sayvel(savil reincarnated) talked to people with the Gift. Kero was like "Yeah, she doesn't pretend that she can't Speak to anyone without the gift like the rest of em. Next she'll talk to people without the Gift!" That sounds just like Savil and they make several references about how stubborn Sayvel is. Yfandes talked to Stef. I think it's a secret Companion thing, like hiding the fact that they were reincarnated, but unlike Heralds, they remember their past lives. In one of the Storm (or something) books they mentioned that the Companions had secrets cuz what if you knew that a loved one could be reincarnated as a Companion? It's bad as well as good. I was surfing for servers on IRC, when I found this one; the name caught my eye.. " WELCOME TO SorceryNet - Your server is kechara.sorcery.net located in Cambridge, MA, USA" ke'chara, I think... must be a coincidence, of course. Even if it is connected to 'sorcery.net'... But I, as the dutiful Lackiest, log on anyway. And who, might you ask, is one of the admins? Skandranon. Cute, no? (And before you ask, no Misty channel that I can see... But all that would take is a simple /join command.) Re: Fanfiction I was thinking, heralds aren't copyrighted, while Heralds are. So, technically, you could have 'herald-spies,' who work for the Queen or King or Baron or whatever in the name of all that is good, spying on baronies, countries, allies, and enemies... all while delivering their messages ... OC, they wouldn't have Companions, nor would they be chosen... That would be outright copyright violation. But, seriously, who would get around more than a herald, delivering messages to outlands -- and they would be the perfect, unassuming disguise... Except for Bards, of course ;) PS.. LOL at the mating circle filk ;) Sarah Margaret ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Oct 1997 20:52:12 EDT From: "MEGAN DIMOND" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Lightbulb and other jokes; Braid Message-ID: <19971016005212.3185.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> >It was written: >> I KNOW! I really enjoy reading them, but I am not as fast a reader as I like to be, and don't really have the time anyway. But I have plenty of time to listen to them. Any assistance anyone could give me with this, would be very much appreciated. Oh, and the same goes for MZB books also.
