I have heard a lot of people comment on the astonishing rate at which they read books. I, on the other hand am the opposite. I read a lot of books, but I read them slowly. I like to savour every word. When I read a book, I am caught up in it as if it is really happening to me. Therefore, since life doesn't happen that fast, I read them slowly, and try to retain all the knowledge therein. I also try to figure out how I would react to the situation, and what ideas I would come up with to solve the problems. And another thing, this is long overdue, but I just found the reference: Dawn Patrick wrote: >> Silentmoon wrote : >> >> in the winds series.. elspeth discovers magick cant be discussed b/c of >> a spell that van put in place. now i just finished the LHM series.. and >> nowhere in there does he set that spell in place.. he does set stefen on >> the mission of bolstering the heralds opinions of themselves. does the >> spell get set in another book? > >I thought I remembered that in the Winds series Elspeth asked Van about the >fact that they couldn't talk about magic in Valdemar and he said something >like "actually that was Stefan's doing" Can anyone confirm or am I >misremembering? In WOFury Elspeth says: "But what about the way people simply can't think about magic? The vrondi couldn't be responsible for that!" Then Steph says: :No, I am, It was something we decided on after Van and I got together again: I assume that means that after Steph dies and his spirit joins Van, they together were responsible for that. Before that, Steph's job had been to try and convince people that Herald-Mages were not superior to other Heralds, through his Bard duties. But since he was not fully sucessful, he and Van decided it would be best for people to simply forget that any magic but mind-magic had ever existed in Valdemar, except in old tales and songs. Andros Hanarak--Hi! I think if Karal had been brought up as most of us are/were, he would be too young to handle a lot of what was thrown at him at the age when he had to deal with it. I think, though, that having been brought up in a 'monastery' most of his life, and not having been in a privileged social class before that, he grew up with self-discipline as a way of life in a way that I, at least, didn't have to learn as young as he did. I think that self-discipline taught him to handle the events in the Mage books. Later horror of horrors Misty seems to forget about his gift because he talks to Stefan at one point and says something about that he'd never been all that good. It would have been really cool if she mentioned Van playing more often after Lendel died. There was one mention of a worst song contest back when Van took Stefan home to meet Mommy and Daddums. Don't you hate it when authors do something like that. Like in Sword of Ice. One of the writers obviously didn't do his homework before writing a tale set in Valdemar. I forget who it was but they had a hopeful would be bard be denied his dream because he didn't have the gift but this writer also said at one point that the boy had already started to Compose a song for his sister. I speak from experiance. ;) I dont know what type of school you plan to teach, but in high school, students get laden down with an INCREADABLE ammount of work. Not only that, we want to have lives. (oops, sorry for the tirade, just mad at MY teachers, not you.) So home learning is great, but also you DO need to go over your ciriculum in class. I know I could learn at home, and I often do, but I also know many people who are failing because teachers dont bother to go over their work. I am an individual (even as an identical twin) and fantasy is part of that unique individuality. II read fantasy novels because of the "possibilities" in them, and also many readers (ie Sheri Tepper, Sara Douglass) use the genre to explore issues that maybe taboo in mainstream reading (ie religion, sexuality). But because I am so often "put down" for reading fantasy, I try very hard NOT to do the same about other people's reading or their library. Even to pity them for their lack of understanding of fantasy is patronisation. Face it - list sibs, some people don't like fantasy and never will. That's OK we need all kinds in this world of ours - it makes it interesting. And when so one has a go at me about reading fantasy - I tell them that they are entitled to their opinion but that my opinion is that the reading of fantasy novels enriches my life. I do have one terrible habit though - I always read the end of books - then I find just as much pleasure in finding out how the author gets there. I know I shouldn't but I can't help it!!! TARMA: I concur with the belief that Tarma is dead - she is one of the leshya as her voice is described as coming from the bottom of a well. I am glad that Warrl is with her because he did say he was going to ask the Goddess to take him with Tarma when she died. The question is what happened to Kethry? Is there not a book coming out about all of this??? TALE'SEDRIN CLAN: While I agree that Kethry did a damn good job of helping re-populate the clan - once she started - others from other clans came to join - and so whilst blonde hair is common in the clan - not all descend from Kethry. Afterall Kero was also made a new member of the clan - yes I know she was Kethry's grand-daughter. KARAL Young he may be, but so deeply rooted in his faith that he is able to be strong. It is so good to see that the faith he has is so embedded in inclusivity and fairness. Now if that could occur here.... We, the Readers, are kind of like Bards. To be a Bard you must have two out of three Gifts, the Creative Gift, the Talent, and or the Bardic Gift. To be a reader you must have imagination. To be a writer you must have imagination and creativiness. And to be a really good writer, IMHO, you will make your readers feel what they are reading, being able to relate to a character and such. I myself have the Imagination, as do most readers, but they don't always have the Creative Gift, to make up ideas or something to that effect. And then there is the Writer's Gift. Making people relate or feel sorry for a character. This is just an observation, what do you think? ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 1383 **********************************
