But there are (as with anything) exceptions to a general thing. Personally, I do not consider myself to be creative AT ALL, to the point of having trouble in school etc with anything that required imagination. Yet I have been an avid reader since kindergarten. Go figure. I don't visualize well at all from writers descriptions, but can lose myself in a book faster than anyone I know....and devour more books that almost anyone I know. Motivations are history!" By this, she meant that the surface facts about something (the charges against JoA) are not the crucial part of history; the motivations behind those events are the crucial part. >> And now for the strange connection: that is what my point was (in a roundabout way) back when we were bemoaning the lack of good villans. The villan, in and of themselves, can be anything or have any powers. It is the motivation of the villan which makes them (in my eyes) either a good or bad character. A story which simply describes the actions of the opposing force (or worse yet, relates it through a third party) does not make me truly care, or fear that force. If I understand the villan, either through a scene directly observing his actions (thus giving a clue to how he thinks and why he does some of the things he does), or better yet getting to hear him think and reveal why some of these plans are made, will make me want to see him defeated or at least be worried about what he will do. For example, to have a character say "he killed my bondbird, he loves to hurt things" has a completely different emotional impact than to see him kill the bird and take obvious pleasure in it. Then I care more than abstractly if he is defeated. That is what I thought the Winds series lacked. Motivations are history, but they are also darn good fiction. I also don't believe that most people oppose other forces because they are "evil" or enjoy other's pain. I'm not saying it dosen't exist, just not to the extent it seems to be used as a motivating factor for the opponents of the main character. That was one of the things I liked best about Ma'ar. He honestly thought he was doing what was right, he just didn't have any morals or scruples about how he did it, or any sense that anyone other than himself and the people he chose to protect mattered. That I can understand, if not sympathise with. And I still want to see him defeated. My apologies for resurrecting a subject we seem to be done with, but when I read that it just clicked. Some people are so much more eloquent than I. *sigh* ****************************** And on the subject of reading a lot, let's not forget those nights when you KNOW you have to go to sleep, but you will just read "one more page", OK, "one more chapter" until it's way too late. I feel like an addict sometimes. And then there are the times when I find myself thinking in the style of the current book I'm reading. And my speech patterns change (or so I've been told). Sometimes the words have a different rhythm (as in Old English, Shakespeare, etc.) or you will choose one adjective over another you use more frequently because you have just been reading a book where the character thinks in those terms. Not that you "become" the character, or anything psychotic, but you tend to speak as you have just been thinking. No? ******************************* And now for fluff: Little Sorchafyr has lost her sheep, and dosen't know where to find them. Her computer crashed and they took a dash leaving only electrons behind them. In other words, my system crashed this weekend and I lost the electronic sheep program someone on this list sent me. Mea culpa for forgetting who you are, extra sheep to you in apology. I adored those things, could you please send me the program again? I suppose I've said enough for one mail, shade and sweet water to you all. I don't know about that unfortunately, I'm single and looking at the moment, but it does agrivate me to no end when I'm right in the middle of a good part and I can't even finish the sentence. But what's worse I think are your parents. I got my habits from my mother who reads and hordes books like a dragon does jems. My father on the other hand just doesn't understand why I want to keep buying books. He asked me one time why after I finished a book I didn't just take it to one of the book exchange places and get another one instead of hording them all and running out of room. Clutching the book in question to my chest all I could say is that they're _my_ books and if they're really good I might and probably will read them again. Some people just don't understand. And to respond to what somebody said about there are people out there that do read my kind of books, I know but I'm not very outgoing and from the people I'm in class with I know that they don't read. And if you couldn't tell from my address, I'm at the University of Georgia (who just beat the Florida Gators-first time since 1989-yeah!!, sorry) which where I grew up is considered a big party school, the thing about the frats, that encompasses the majority of the people. Oh and to the person that was commenting on the lack of a car, I totally understand. I have no means of transportation and the only time I get to go to a book store is when I go back home on the weekends, every two weeks or so. And I do apologize for being so impersonal, no names, but I've got to go run errands and I just read the messages without really looking at who wrote them. But on to the reason of my subject heading. I'm a big Hercules and Xena fan, and this weekend it showed Xena and Gabriel standing together and something in my mind just said Tarma and Kethry. I mean if you look at it, Tarma is dark complexioned (sp) adn a good fighter; Xena is dark complexioned adn a good fighter. Kethry is small adn blond-blue eyed type and a so-so fighter (without Need); Gabriel is small, blond-blue eyed, adn a so-so fighter. I wonder if any of the writers might read Lackey. It's a possibility. Well enough rambling, like I said errands to do. To both of you. My mom and I have both pulled that "just let me finish the end of the chapter, Please!!!" route a lot. And I personally believe that for a bookaholic, books can start to cost a lot more than they need to (i.e. me and my mom will get 2 or more of the Waldenbooks preferred reader coupons that you get when you spend $100, a month). If only they didn't sell for $6 a pop normally. Sigh!! > does anyone know how "fish" could be spelled "ghoti"? <-- is supposed to > illustrate the quirks of the english language...... I can take a guess on most of it but I don't know where the "o" comes in. "f" comes before "g" "i" comes after "h" "s" comes before "t" "i" comes after "h" I don't know if that'll help or not. Oh, on the Xena/Tarma thingy I was just suggesting a possibility. It could just be that they are considered natural opposites. Dark-light, fighter-non-fighter, tall-short, that kind of thing. And I don't really care about bad effects _too_ much in Hercules, Kevin Sorbo is just toooo cute for it to matter. That's all for now. My e-mail adress is on this posting and I don't have to pay for whatever it is people usually do for e-mail since this is from the school. Or if you want, you can e-mail me personally and I'll send you my snail mail address adn you can send it that way. Also, congratulations on starting writing. Personally, I've got about 18 (I think) different stories in various states of progress in the works and I think I did start about in the 8th grade. One thing I do is find anyone that you like that does read, adult or otherwise, and ask them for their opinion. Adults are good at critiquing for grammar and spelling and all that stuff you really don't think about when you are writing. People in your age group are usually good for getting opinions on the plot, how it actually reads and that kind of stuff. Also, this goes to everyone who does write, since I know there's a few of us. However, if it does start to get over a few pages, please just ask me for my snail mail. But this will be my quota of postings for the day. I promise. Actually, yes. This was a reductio ad absurdam argument made by George Bernard Shaw in one of his attempts to propose a spelling reform for Modern English. He pointed out that, in the current system of English orthography, you could conceivably spell the word "fish" as "ghoti" based on the following: "gh" = the 'f' sound in "rough" "o" = the 'i' sound in "women" and "ti" = the "sh" sound in "nation" May the seas be your solace and the forests a refuge for your spirit, Cennydd Councilor of Mist Kenneth Allen Hyde | No matter how subtle the wizard, a knife Univ. of Delaware | between the shoulder blades will seriously Dept. of Linguistics | cramp his style -- Old Jhereg proverb kenny-+AT+-Udel.Edu | A mind is a terrible toy to waste! -- Me //www.ling.udel.edu/hyde/prof/ken.html ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 1384 **********************************
