I guess it must be the goofy things that netscape has doing with the mail. Like Heather, I have been around a little while , and just sort of jumped right in without introducing myself. So, like a good Amber should, time to introduce myself. My real name is Amber, pen name and safty-in-not-being-really-me-on-the-net-name is Anastasia or Stasia I'm 23, almost 24, years old, living in St Petersburg, FL. I work as a customer service rep for an auto club that is NOT AAA. Did the college thing, had to leave my final semester without graduating because I'm not rich and I couldn't find enough scholarship money to finish the job... But, I've vowed to return someday to get my Math Major with a concentration in Computer Science and a minor in Theater Arts. I'm not really single, not really dating, not really sure what that aspect of my life has to bring. But, I'm having fun with life, so I guess that's the most important thing. Hobbies-wise , I write poetry, love music , have a live-in destroyer/cuddler, a black cat named Sohco. As to Misty... I was a senior in HS when I first picked up something written by her. But, I honestly don't remember which one of three books it was... either Elvenblood, with Andre Norton, Bedlam's Bard, the SFBC's compilation with Ellen Guon, or Queens Own. All I do remember is that when I left for college, I thought "I've read 3 pieces written or co-written by this author. And they're GOOD! I'll have to see what else I can find by her." By the end of my time in college, I had bought LHM, By the Sword, Oathbound, and The Lark and the Wren and had read the Winds books that had been out at the time. I knew there was no turning back, and am, slowly, if not as surely as I would like, managing to own every book written by Misty in print. Well, I guess that's enough about me for now. I've been off-list (inadvertently) for a bit, and I've missed the bio-discussion. I thought I'd generate my own. We all are on this list because we love Misty's work. What other things do we have in common? I think the two funniest movies ever made were "History of the World" and "The Holy Grail". My favorite music is primarily country (Tim McGraw and Clint Black head the list right now); I also like Ozzy (Crazy Train and Suicide Solution) and classical. I like (no duh) reading, bowling, softball, swimming and cooking; my favorite season is fall - those clear, crisp days with a hint of burning leaves in the air, sun shining, air with a nip; I love dogs, but now am a confirmed "cat person"; I am a scientist in Toxicology, and I really love it; I am dying for the next Earth's Children novel to come out (Thank you Misty for not waiting 8 YEARS between books); and someday I hope to write something that other people will enjoy as much as I enjoy other author's work. What are everyone's favorite things? If you could have anything that money could buy, what would it be? I'd like a fully stocked Arabian horse farm with tons of acreage and several ponds. The symptoms for obsession are pretty much the same in the *real* world as are lifebonding in misty's. So i suppose if you think that you are suffering from a lifebond, and the person doesn't reciprocate, then it might be a good idea to seek help! *grin* I started thinking that it was a rotten thing to do to a bunch of dedicated readers, making them think that obsession was ok. of course, she probably didn't realize. anyhow, i'm not putting misty down, it was just one of those things ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Nov 1997 11:54:01 -0500 (Eastern Standard Time) From: Heather Shannon To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: More kind of fluff-stuff Message-ID: >What are everyone's favorite things? I am 20 and going to college right now in beautiful Bellingham. The town is about 20 minutes from the Canadian border in Washington state. I absolutely adore the town, hate school, and after 2 years still am not certain what my major is. (i know i know!) I'm not sure when i started reading misty. I remember the exact moment, even if i can't remember the year. I was in my hometown library, which is pitifully small. I must have been fairly young, because i didn't want to read childrens anymore, didn't like the young adult (they were mostly about boy/girl relationships, and I didn't care a whit about boys at that time!) and the funny thing is i felt weird going into the fiction hardback section. to make a long story short, i was in paperback and i saw arrows of the queen. I saw the horse on the cover and i snatched that book up so fast... looking back, i think it is a miracle that i picked up a book that was the first in its series. The strange thing is that there was a girl that lived by me who was also a raging misty fan, and she would get everything in hardback long before the library. i would wait impaitently for her to finish so i could borrow the book. (Jenna, are you out there?? ) I went on a spree the other day and bought a bunch of books with which was supposed to be my grocery money. ah, well, i suppose potatos aren't that bad.... Recently I was introduced to the joy of music, more so than i had ever known before. anyhow, that is a little bit about me. I was lurking for awhile, so I have emerged from my cocoon and blossomed. I really hate to annoy anyone, but someone once put a list of the Misty stories in Sword&Sorceress and I would like to have that or something like it. This is speculation, but once in OBound Keth mentioned that White Winds is a good order, one that doesn't believe in blood magic and that kind of stuff. Well, Keth also mentioned that you can become a mage without Gifts, it just makes it easier. She also said that she doesn't have her Talent (Gift) fully trained, and she doesn't know anyone who has their Talent trained. I think that's why Kethry has to do all that silly chanting and stuff. Sort of like the Villainess in Jinx High. Now, in LHM, Moondance says that only Outlanders with very strong Gifts can handle the nodes if they are Tayledras-trained. Van and Savil are the only people who can handle nodes. So-o-o-o, I think the Tayledras fully trained their Gifts so they can use the nodes. No chanting and ritual for them. One more thing: You know how Valdemareans use the terms "Lady Bright!" and "Lord and Lady!" a lot! I have only heard this once, but the "Lord" in "Lord and Lady!" is called Lord Dark. Well, that is enough of my wayward musings. TTFN Savarana Sappharine P.S- I hope people don't get mad at me for this, but you AOL members, how do you make a signature? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Nov 1997 17:12:38 -0000 From: "Roesle, Kathy" To: "'mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk'" Subject: RE: mini-bio Message-ID: I guess I'll contribute my information as well... I've been a member of the list for a few months (mostly lurking, contributing seldom, but ALWAYS enjoying!). My name is Kathy, I am 39, and I live in Colorado Springs, CO (originally from Maryland and lived there as well as in DC and Virginia). I have been an engineer and am now a manager with a large telecommunications company and really love my job (I must since I've been with the same company for 15 years!). I am married and have an 8-year-old daughter and a 17-year-old-step son (as well as 1 husband, 3 dogs, 1 cat, 2 birds, and numerous tropical fish -- we did have a gerbil, but he passed on to the great gerbil resort in the sky only yesterday...). I read like crazy (drives my husband nuts!!!). And I must say, I feel so old compared to all you youngsters on the list (but, luckily, age is a state of mind, and my mind is most definitely not out of it's 20's!) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Nov 1997 20:11:56 -0700 From: Susanna Warner To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: mini-bio Message-ID: <346286FB.86D9A94B-+AT+-cadvision.com> Roesle, Kathy wrote: > And I must say, I feel so old compared to all you youngsters on the list > (but, luckily, age is a state of mind, and my mind is most definitely > not out of it's 20's!) My name is Susanna and I have been on the list since August, mostly lurking and enjoying reading others' opinions and the wide ranging discussions that happen on this list. I just want Kathy to know that she is not the only older person here. My physical age is 44, but like Kathy, age is a state of mind and mine is in the same place as Kathy's. Currently, I am living alone here in Calgary, Alberta and my daughter (24) and grandson (20 months old) live in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Because I live in an apartment, I have no pets, except for my collection of stuffed animals. My job description is Software Support Technician, but what I actually do is nearly anything that is asked of me. Working on a computer all day doesn't stop me from using my home computer in the evening and on weekends. My fellow workers tease me about the fact that either I am on my computer at home or reading. I was introduced to Mercedes Lackey's books by a friend who lent me her copy of By the Sword. Later she gave it to me to keep. For me it is easier to name Misty's books that I don't have. Last Saturday I picked up my copy of "Owlflight" and really enjoyed it. Some weekends I start with the Mage Wars trilogy and read them all the way through to the Mage Storms. Of course, I keep all the books that I get and read them again and again. When I moved from Winnipeg to Calgary, I wasn't able to take all the books I had, so they are sitting in storage at my mother's house in Winnipeg. The other thing that I really like is listening to Country Music while I am working on the computer both at home and at work. This is just a mini-bio, as I could write pages and pages about myself and family. My homepage is at http://www.cadvision.com/swarner/index.html and of course it has links to a range of authors including Mercedes Lackey. A custom-made copy of Princess Elizabeth Tudor's dress from the portrait that was painted of her at age 13 (Drool! Why did she ever go to wearing those horrible drum farthingales???), a Bose radio, the complete works of Hildegard of Bingen, some good neurology books...I should quit while I'm ahead.
