If the purpose is to get a consesus of the average list READER, that might not be what you get. What you are getting is the bios of the average list POSTER. I think the average lurker might have a somewhat different set of statistics. What does everyone think, would there be two seperate and distinct profiles, a different "average"? Sorchafyr ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Nov 1997 14:09:46 -0000 From: "Dawn Patrick" To: Subject: Re: Reading Message-ID: > Several people have written stuff about being a reader when no-one else is. I grew up in a reading family. My mother reads, my father reads, they used to read tio me&my sister before bed every night. We used to make up stories on long car journeys. I always used to think everyone was the same - it came as a tremendous shock when I found out differently. I think reading is a way to bring people closer. You share disoveries of authors Amongst others : My Dad introduced me to Asimov, Aldous Huxley, Douglas Adams & Eddings; My mother introduced me to Alice Walker, Anne McCaffrey, Julian May & MZB; My sister introduced my to Katherine Kerr, Helen Fielding & Tony Warren; Friends have introduced me to Irvine Walsh (before Trainspotting became big!) Terry Pratchett, Miles Franklin and many more. I have introduced various people to Misty, Hanif Kureshi, MZB, Robert Rodi, Douglas Coupland etc. Even now it still shocks me when people don't read. In general I don't tend to hang around with people who don't (a notable exception being the flatmate who only liked Jeffrey Archer - well I suppose someone has to buy his books but I'd really rather they didn't!). However I have to insert one little warning in the "Relationships" area. Yes it is nice to go out with someone who has reading, especially reading in the SF&F genre, in common BUT it can be taken too far. I guess I am a genre fan but I am far more of a reading fan (see selection of authors above!). This particular person was a reading fan but far more of a genre fan. Sitting in a pub with music playing and a television showing an old episode of Doctor Who with the sound off I found this out. He quoted the episode to me. Completely ("and now he's saying ... and the Doctor he says ...."). Including commentry ("oh this bit next, watch how he gets out of this. Brilliant. Did you see what he did? He ..." etc etc etc). BE CAREFUL. You do not want to spend an evening like that trust me! In conclusion I think reading expands the mind, reading SF expands the imagination and reading fantasy expands the soul. Anyone who doesn't read is missing so much of life. BTW To whoever said they knew people who didn't pick up a book because they would have to put down their beer. I have a technique : sit cross legged holding the book open with your toes. This way you can have your beer in one hand, a cigarette in the other and just need to put the beer down when you turn the page. Of course it doen't do much good to your posture being bent over to read but if you are intent on ruining your liver and your lungs why worry about posture. Well that's my lot for today - I have to plough through a weeks worth of mail because I am redecorating my living room and have been unable to get to my computer. Still have the same problems so you probably won't hear from me 'til next week - or later depending on how much mail you continue to send (over 100 this week do you realise)! Yep, I love _The Prisoner_. Every once in a while they decide to show it on our PBS channel here. I even bought the 4-issue comic book series that DC (I think) put out a while back. For those of you who have no idea what we're talking about, _The Prisoner_ was a 13-episode British TV show that aired the summer of 1969. The plot driving the whole show is this British secret agent who resigned from the service. As he's packing his things to go off to Bermuda, gas seeps under his door, and he collapses, unconscious. When he wakes up he finds himself in a place called The Village, and he's been given an identification number, Number Six. This is how he's addressed all throughout the show. Turns out that someone wants to know why he resigned and what he was up to. The problem is that Six doesn't know who is trying to find out this information--is it his own people, or someone else? And regardless of that, can he trust either possibility? The entire series shows his fight to maintain his own mental integrity. In this series, everyone _is_ out to get you. SCA stands for The Society for Creative Anachronism, which is a group devoted to recreating the arts and culture of the Middle Ages/Renaissance, as opposed to re-enacting specific battles, etc. If you really want to get into it, you pick a period, create a persona who might have lived then, get together a costume or several for your persona, and research that period. If you are less interested in research, you can create a generic persona and participate that way. It's based in Milpitas, California. Chantal "We are Gray. Nothing seems right. You can just call me blank for now. I am in Gainesville FL. I am 24. I am married. I have a 17 month old son. I started fantasy in 3rd or 4th grade with good ol J.R.R. Tolkien. I hit Misty in high school. I've read just about everything of hers. I'd like to get into the music too. Anyway, enough. RE: Firesong, ya'know, I always wanted to shake him too. He is the weirdest character, runs so hot and cold. One minute he seems so totally selfish and the next he's the nice guy. I think it's cause he was so sheltered. (Opinions?) RE: use-names I really want one, I've neverliked my real name. It never seemed to fit. Can anyone give me a hint on how they found theirs? RE: computers. I don't know who was asking about all the junk ay the end of messages or who replied about "text-only" stuff and other Greek-to-me's but if I'm doing that please let me know and I'll get the old man to fix it.
