I think the > average > lurker might have a somewhat different set of statistics. Just out of curiosity, why should "lurkers" have a different set of statistics? Afterall, looking at the various people who have posted so far, the statistics seem to vary greatly from person to person. I don't think there is anyway to tell if the "lurker" are different unless one compiled all the statistics from the regular posters and the ones from the lurkers and compared the two. Well anyway, I should introduce myself. :-) I am mostly a "lurker" as I usually don't have time to read and respond to the message. I am an eighteen year old college "freshperson" at UC Berkeley. I started reading Misty back in the eighth grade when I first picked up the Arrows and Winds trilogy when I joined the science fiction book club. Since then, I purchased (yes, I hang on to my beloved book :-)) and avidly read every single one of her Valdmar books as well as some of her other novels. Most of the books that I read are fantasy or science fiction. When I don't have my nose stuck in a book, I make jewelery, sculpt with polymer clays, fence, draw, listen to music, and of course, play on the computer.Well, hope I haven't bored you all silly. Message-ID: heyla listsibs~ well, I gave a short bio of who I am and I'll expand a little. Like I said, I'm a student at Douglass College at Rutgers University and I'm an eighteen year old female. "These are a few of my favorite things. . ." random list: chocolate oblivion, a good coffeehouse, poetry readings when i read my own stuff, reading (misty, the lady rice, Maeve Binchley>, midnight showings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Movies:Willam Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet, Braveheart, the princess bride, renaissance festivals, garb for renfesting, role playing, Vampire: the Masquarade, Vampire: The Dark Ages, music: herald music, the goddess Sarah , Fiona Apple, 10,000 Maniacs, Celtic music, writing, watching stars, watching snow fall and storms, flannel sheets, my friends, my boyfriend, ice skating, playing the flute. . . what would I do with money. . .I would pay off my college loans, buy a new car, buy a good modem for my laptop, go to scotland (I feel it in my blood and I long for a place I've never been so much sometimes it hurts), open my own coffeehouse, and get a big Victorian house by the sea. . . Usenames: I chose this name because in the tradition of the Hawksbrothers they choose names that suit them. When that time in your life ends (often in tradegy), you take a new name. I chose Nightsong because this is a hard (and often dark) time in my life right now, but I choose Song because it's like I'm singing in the dark. . .I can still find beauty and I still want to get through this all. Well, I think that the logic runs thusly: if lurkers and non-lurkers constitute two distinct "natural classes" of list members, and if "natural classes" are defined by differences across multiple characteristics, then lurkers and non-lurkers differ across multiple characteristics. I leave it as an excercise for the logic students to decide why this equation does not necessarily yield a valid conclusion. =) > I am mostly a "lurker" as I usually don't have time to read and respond > to the message. I am an eighteen year old college "freshperson" at UC > Berkeley. So, that is probably one characteristic of lurkers: they are very busy! *grin* I've become a semi-lurker on all my mailing lists for a similar reason. I'm a grad student with a full course-load, a teaching assistantship, *and* my dissertation research to work on. I've pretty much been reduced to the very occasional post and my duties on the Council of Mist. (I think that the other reason for lurker-status is that some people are shy. However, as anyone who remembers back to my infamous "strip-teases" knows (now you have something to trawl the archives for!), "shy" isn't an appropriate description for me. ) BTW, just a reminder to people joining the list: there are several documents that answer all sorts of question such as what do the various abbreviations mean, who are all these gods and goddesses (and how does one go about joining the ranks), and what's up with the sheep references. The main document is the NewbiFest web-page at: The abbreviations are at the same site in ../misty/abbrev.html and the Pantheon is in ../misty/gods.html This sort of leapt into my mind because of the question by one of the new members of our insan...happy family who wondered who MZB is. Someone already answered the question (Marion Zimmer Bradley), but left out one important fact: MZB is also an editor at DAW Publisher and is the person who gave Misty her big break in the Sword & Sorceress anthology series. (BTW, for those who haven't got the latest edition, MZB says that Misty has stopped submitting short stories to S&S--presumably because she is busy with her other writing projects). Anyway, that's it for me at the moment. Oh, BTW, does anyone on this list speak Irish Gaelic fluently? My syntax class has a few questions about certain constructions in Gaelic and would like to find a native or near-native speaker that we could ask to give us some judgements on certain sentences/structures. I've just been reading some of the stuff that I've seen in my box and hope I go along the right lines... I started reading fantasy/sci-fi when I was 13---started with Anne McCaffrey's Moreta:The Dragonlady of Pern...Since then it's all been uphill. I've read anything from Lackey to Norton, Greeno to Rawn, and am still waiting for the 3rd Mage Storms to come out in paperback (Poor College students can't afford hardcovers) as well as the new one about the orphan boy who Bonds with the owl in the Pelagirs (can't remember the title)...I started Mercedes with Magic's Pawn and have been a faithful reader of that Trilogy many a time. I have yet to start the Serrated Edge series (mainly because I don't know which one is the first one) and am hopeful about a new release in the Bardic Voices series. I have yet to requisition music from Valdemar because I am terribly inept at snail mail correspondences. Other than that, I'm in college in North Carolina and am slowly looking toward a teaching career. I enjoy everything. I'm in the process of learning the flute, violin, and am hoping for voice lessons...I just like to know for the sake of knowing... Money--aaaaa, who cares? If it weren't required to live, I wouldn't use it so I try not to imagine that I have any more than I actually do... Usename--Heartspring. Plain and simple. I am a wealth of emotions, hope, optimism and idealism. There isn't a dark sky in my world that isn't hiding the sun behind it...It sounds so cliched but I really do believe it... Hope this fills some people in, Zhai'helleva, Heartspring ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Nov 1997 00:35:04 -0500 (EST) From: "Bradley H.
