I am 24, gay male, living in Winnipeg, Canada. I love to read, (mainly fantasy), love dogs, like tv (especially the X-Files and Jeopardy), and love tennis (playing and watching). I just thought I'd throw in my ideas on reincarnation and misty. As shown with Vanyel, heralds when they die are given the choice of coming back to serve the world or go on to the Havens. I assume if they decide to come back they are reincarnated or they can become Companions. Companions keep memories of their past life, I'm assuming reincarnated people don't. I think that because they were heralds once doesn't necessarily mean they will be again. They probably will be gifted in some way so that they can continue to serve Valdemar i.e. Tylendel/Stef. I don't think lifebonds would transmute but thats just my opinion. I mean look how rare they are. Anyway in response to: > More books (fantasy preferably. . .) that feature gay characters? A short list I've accumulated: Lynn Flewelling: Luck in the Shadows, Stalking Darkness Tanya Huff: The Fire Stone Fiona Patton: The Stone Prince Elizabeth Lynn: Dancers of Arun Catherine Cooke: Winged Assassin, Realm of the Goods, Crimson Goddess Diane Duane: Door into Fire I find it very interesting that they've all been written by women. I don't have any written by men. And in case you think this is the only fantasy i read, as per the discussion a few weeks ago, my favorites are McCaffrey, Katherine Kurtz, Eddings, Terry Brooks, and Robert Jordan. I like gay oriented fantasy because i can identify with it. But it only becomes a favourite if its well written. I think I've blabbed on enough, Fred ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Nov 1997 22:51:28 -0500 (EST) From: "Bradley H. Also, about the reincarnation thing, someone help me on this but are all heralds really Gifted, can't they just be really astounding people? Hmm, maybe I'll read it all over again. And what if Companions didn't remember exactly who they were just remembered all of the wisdom and experience. I think this would be more likely. Otherwise being a Companion might be emotionally painful. What if Tylendel had come back as a Companion, remembered Van and started hanging around him too much . Also to Joel, I understand in some respest, what you mean about identifying with characters. I continued reading ML after the Arrows series because I identified with Talia so much. St. Melenna's Festival is something that happens on the LOTPW (Ladies of the Pink Wand) mailing list (a fluff list that split away from the Mistylist quite a while ago). Basically, Melenna spent all that time yearning after Vanyel, following Vanyel around, turning up in Vanyel's bed... so St. Melenna's Festival is when all the Ladies on the LOTPW list pick an uncooperative Object of Undying Love/Lust to stalk. Then in MPrice, he's suddenly the Eastern Guardian, with Lissandra as Northern Guardian. Now, I know this is just a writing error, but it made me wonder a little... Can the guardianships be passed to others while still in life? Say, Van had been the Eastern Guardian, because he was dealing with the Karsite incurions over there, and now all of a sudden there is a huge threat from the North. Van, being the much stronger mage, may need to be used to front that attack. Would he/could he change places as far as where he guarded with Lis, or does it matter? I don't think I ever really got the guardianship thing down completely in my mind. Anyway, enough prattle for today. If the calling is as strong as Vanyel and Tylendel and Talia and Elspeth all say it is, how can you resist not being able to serve for a VERY long time? It sounds kind of like teachers--the ones that feel an overwhelming need to teach because they HAVE to--who don't see any other place that they would be happier. Granted, the job may not be the most illustrious, but the self-eddification factor and the feeling of contentment when (for Heralds) you save a life or resolve a conflict and (for teachers) a student finally gets something you've been trying to teach them for a very long time. You just can't help it. I have a question---I've recently started to reread the LHM series and I was wondering when, exactly, Lissa and Vanyel met. The first time, and for the following five times, I read Magic's Pawn, I thought that Lissa and Vanyel met when she was ten and he was young. At least, that's the impression that I got. The reason I got that impression is because there is mention of Lady Treesa not being able to take care of the children she birthed because she was constantly pregnant and I just assumed that the children went to the nursery and were "assigned" to their caretakers (much like Liss with Grandmother Ashekevron). I suppose this isn't true but it also says that Van and Liss fell in love with each other immediately. After considering the age indicators (Liss being fostered off to Corey, Vanyel's year of healing) this makes Liss two, maybe three, when they met. I'm just trying to figure this out. Any help would be greatly appreciated... I mean look how rare they are. I don't agree with this. If lifebonds don't transmute or transfer to the new incarnation, how can one explain the Van/Stef lifebond? I don't think that this is something that happens upon happenstance. If lifebonds are rare, then how could ONE person experience the TWO lifebonds in one lifetime that Vanyel does? It seems odd that the combination would occur and every indicator points to the fact that lifebonds transfer. There is one whole and only two halves can complete that. If they aren't the same halves, they won't happen. Now, I admit that Ylsa, Keren, and Sherrill (Arrows of the Queen series) are an anomaly, but that's why it is mentioned that it is almost unheard of to have a tribond. I don't know.
