Someone, (sorry I deleted the post too quickly) said they thought one of the characters from the SERRAted edge series was connected to the Di Tregarde novels. Tannim attended Jinx High, so that's the connection. IMHO Sacred Ground, the Di Tregarde novels and SERRAted edge are all set in our world only with magic. At least the magic is more obvious in the novels than what I have noticed in the real world. Here's a question for speculation. How long will it be before gunpowder is discovered in Valdemar;and how will it be used when it is discovered? Will only heralds be allowed to use it? I LOVED seeing the unfolding potential of a relationship between Tal and Ardis and I thought the resolution was reached really well. Also, I'm glad that that Revaner was definitely disposed of. It was also neat hearing more about Raven and Lark and all the others that we've read about before. All in all, a very nice book and I enjoyed reading it. I am going to have to read it again before I loan it to my fiance (and Chris, if you're reading this and you have a problem with it...you know how to get ahold of me. but I doubt that you will.) Anyways... I also enjoyed hearing more about Ardis' history and what lead up to her taking vows. Ardis is a really cool character and she's now High Bishop, which is great. :) Although I didn't remember reading before that she was the Duke of Kingsford's cousin... interesting. Too, I liked having another Haspur character playing a major role, although he seemed to have less of a problem with killing than I'd been lead to believe that Haspurs should have. Perhaps he was one of those who had he stayed in the Aerie would have been a guard/peacekeeper sort... Allrighty, well, that's about it for now... E N D S P O I L E R Ok, it's safe to look now. I know that > the Little Gods are dead emperors, so how could there suddenly be 60 > more!? Did I miss something? They suddenly decided to include the 60 emperors who reigned during the "Year of the Short Emperors"? *giggle* For those of you who have not discovered the Liavek anthology series, this is a reference to an absolutely hilarious poem called the Ballad of the Short Levars (Levar being the title of the ruler of the city-state of Liavek). The poem chronicles the successive reigns of 12(?) levars who briefly held the thrown and then died during a single year, one after another. The ways they die are very funny (I think one laughs to death at the end, IIRC). Anyway, on a more serious note, here are some speculations: a) There are really 100 or more dead emperors and the number of Small Gods is a function of how upset/excited someone is. So, calling on forty small gods is less emphatic than calling on 100 small gods. (I'm having an irreverent image of people telling small god jokes in the Empire--"How many small gods does it take to..." and "Small Gods are Dead Emperors: we need more small gods!" et cetera). b) Again, suppose that there are more than 100 small gods, but that they are divided into important and less-important ones, along the same lines as the gods and goddesses of Ancient Greece (Olympians vs. non-Olympians). Perhaps the Forty Small Gods are a special subset of small gods who are considered more important (dead *famous* emperors, for example). The 100 Small Gods could just be a conventional expression for all of the small gods, including the non-famous ones. After all, 100 is a suitably large number, while being easier to say than "by all the 143 small gods!" (Hmmm. irreverant thought number two: do you suppose that when an emperor is terminally ill and dying, they would swear by the 143.75 small gods, with the decimal value growing as the emperor got nearer to death?) c) Misty goofed (I know that this comes as shock to everyone, but sometimes she does). When you look at it logically, it seems unlikely that there have been 100+ emperors since the founding of the Empire. I know that my family can trace back over 900 years, and we aren't even close to 100 generations. Even if the emperors have generally short life-spans (and aren't there hints that most emperors live to a ripe old age?), 100 generations would seem to include a much longer period of history than the Empire. Anyway, those are just some thoughts off the top of my head. Hope they amuse, interest, or provoke. I'm curious to know if people who practice > shamanism and witchcraft make such a distinction. Please understand, > this is honest curiosity. Well, since other people might be interested in this, and it might spark some interesting conversation, I thought I would add a few thoughts on this. BTW, I agree that James seemed to be making a point about distinquishing shamanism from witchcraft. Shamanism is a type of religious practice (i.e., there are many religions that are shamanistic, but not all shamans are the same religion). Witchcraft, on the other hand is cover-term for a type of occult practice which may or may not be a religion. Wicca is a religion, but there are many other "flavors" of witchcraft out there, some of them firmly within the Christian tradition and others entirely independant of a religious framework. Now, to address the second question, of whether practicioners of witchcraft and shamanism distinguish their crafts. Here the answer is an definite "yes," with a few caveats. There are many Native American traditions (hereafter NatAm) that have both shamans and witches. Navajo, for example has a very strong distinction between the two. Shamans are the priests/healers/etc of their communities, while witches are people who use spirits and magic for evil. In this case, witches are seen as being part of the same cosmology as the shamans but exist as an antithesis to shamanic practice. Similar patterns can be found in almost every culture that has a shamanic tradition. As for whether wiccans distinguish between shamans and witches, I can't say for sure, but I would have to suspect that, yes, they do (and I would be interested in hearing from the Wiccans on this list). After all, most shamans worship their own gods and spirits (and in the case of some of the Asian and European groups, these can be a very complicated group of deities indeed). If Wicca is based around the worship of the three-fold Goddess, then I would assume that most wiccans would say that shamans are not witches, by definition. Even if a definition of Wicca were reduced to merely "a nature-centered form of worship," many shamans would not meet this definition. Most shamanic practice is not centered around "nature" but around the gods and spirits that control and influence nature and man. Admittedly, many religions that have shamans are nature-based (shamanism is very common in animist religions), but the connection is not a determinate one and the shamans cannot rightly be said to worship *nature*. Anyway, those are some thoughts. Please feel free to jump in with new thoughts, disagreements, emmendations, et cetera. Remember, healthy debate is good exercise for the mind, and fun for everyone, as long as we remember to respect each other and our various opinions. I'm not sure what this is about biographies, but everyone else seems to be doing it, so here goes (be gentle with me). I'm 34 years old, married, and the mother of three (11, 8 & 2). I've been reading Misty for years (and years), starting with the Heralds of Valdemar series. I was grew up in the north-east (Ohio and Michigan), though I have been here in the land of the sun (westcoast areas) for the past 14 years. (Let me tell ya, I've discovered recently that I am _not_ fond of snow anymore - and I _really_ relate to the blizzard tribulations in Arrows Flight.) I read voraciously (sp?), concentrating mostly on sci-fi & fantasy. I started out in the genre with Tolkien (who didn't?) and have had quite an extensive collection over the years. I also draw, paint, write (working on a novel - does anyone know of any _good_ lists or groups for prospective writers?) and used to dance (ballet) until I fractured my foot. My husband and I used to be active in the SCA (japanese personae), but are gravitating more towards the Adrian Society. (This is the SCA outcasts, people who are tired of the politicking and nitpickers of the SCA. And they do live-steel recreation.) We also are active gamers, mostly in AD&D, though we have run the gamut of Traveller, Space Opera, GURPs, ICE, Space Master, etc. I have recently become the City Rep for Thunder Castle Game's Highlander card game, so that keeps me busy (as if I weren't enough already). I have spoken in years past with Judith regarding QO, but I never seemed to be able to get organized. I'm still quite interested in QO, though. Don't know what persona I would like most - can you have more than one? Anyhow, (wow - kind of rambling here, aren't I?) this is my first real post, though I did response to someone's (sorry, I don't remember who you were) question regarding Vanyel and Lissa. I had just (like hours before) read that section of the books, so felt the urge to blab. Hope I did all right. I'd love to hear from anyone with similar interests, and I am finding the lists incredibly fascinating. Or what about Derrik now that he's older....remember the Sorceress is still out there, looking for revenge. I don't know about Tannim becoming a guardian though Dianna,I thought he was one already. I mean the power of the guardian is to protect. They are also able to draw apon power from outside themselves when needed. Both Dianna and Tannim did this.So this leads me to believe that Tannim is already a Guardian. Y'know.. favorite world, favorite trilogy, favorite book, favorite character... whichever, whatever. For me, I think my favorite of Misty's books is By The Sword.. Kero strikes a chord in me somehow. (Secret message to Izzy: what say we make her an honorary member of the B. P.?) Kero is also probably my favorite character, with Skandranon, Darkwind, and Tarma close behind and Vanyel and Elspeth tied for third... Warrl, too, has his points, as well as Justin Twoblade (am I the only one who took a while to realize that Lerryn was his son?) and Ikan Dryvale. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Some semi-fluff: what happens if, say, a hero(ine) from a Misty bookk goes up against a villain (or hero) from another author's world. For example, Vanyel vs. Raistlin from the Dragonlance world. Or Di Tregard vs. Anita Blake (from Laurell K. Hamilton's books), or Tarma and Kethry vs. Arilyn Moonblade and Danilo Thann (from Elaine Cunningham's Elfshadow, etc.) (Really, the ideal match for Arilyn would be Alanna from The Song of the Lioness Quartet, but then there wouldn't be a Misty char in there.) ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ And, for the record, has anyone besides me noticed that the curses used in By The Sword are consistently more creative than the ones found in any other books? :) ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ <> Actually, elves were kind of what I was going for, since I play half a dozen in various roleplaying-type things, and write about another handful of them (Lucian is to date the only character I have invented over whom I occasionally drool.) Petition? How, exactly, do I go about doing this? Burn incense, offer chocolate-peanut-butter-filled-caramel-laced sheep and gourmet jelly beans, and beg really hard? Or is there a form in all the newbie fest/list protocol stuff that I missed or just forgot? :) Zha'hai'allav'a Raven Darkblade *****************************USER ERROR****************************** ***********************HIT ANYONE TO CONTINUE************************ ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 1401 **********************************
