The above question seemed to be a good chance to jump in, so here goes... My first trilogy by Misty, and by far my favorite of ANY books now, is The Last Herald Mage trilogy. I have been a Fantasy book devourer for many years now and, out of all of those books, Vanyel is the first character that I have been able to identify and empathize with. I found myself drawn into the story like never before, my emotions going to extremes, both laughing and crying throughout the books. I have just finished reading the complete Heralds of Valdemar series and I am about to start on Magic's Pawn for the second time. May as well get out the tissues now... Second choice for favorite character would probably be Karal (He'll make a fine Son of the Sun one day). Of course I thought Kris was wonderful (cried at the end of that one too ::grin::) and Need had an interesting personality. Well, I guess that's all for now. I have not yet read the gryphon books, but I know from D&D and mythology that they are hindquarters of a lion and forequarters of an eagle. Also, it says (not in D&D) in mythology that the male cannot fly (i think it's the male...i am prety sure it is) becuase only a female gryphon has wings! Now, of those two sources, I think Misty probably got hers from the mythology (if Misty plays D&D that't be cool!!) A friend of mine who was a gryphon fanatic told me of the innaccuracies in the Dungeons and Dragons Gryphon. The male being wingless was their only mess up.... As for my favorite, it is alas, Diana Tregarde (note: Tregarde is the spelling!) and the SERRAted Edge, I like Tannim... Hey, here's a good (and morbid) question: What is your favorite enemy death scene? S P O I L E R ? Mine is the death of Vidal Dhu in Born to Run (book one of SERRAted Edge)....over 2 tons of Cold Iron moving at over 400mph really does a number on an elf, huh? When I read the Dragonlance >>stuff, I thought that Raistlin was a bit of a boob, a whiner, and too >>ull of himself. Hi! New to the list, but anyway...It's been awhile since I read Dragonlance, but way back when, when they came out, I read them a lot (I think I was in seventh grade or something like that...has it been that long anyway...) I don't think I would ever characterize Raistlin as either as a boob or a whiner (full of himself, yes, but when you're powerful enough to make yourself a god, a little meglomania is forgivable, don't you think?) As to who would win between Vanyel (cheers for the only gay leading male in a fantasy series) and Raistlin ( accused boob and whiner) , I'm afraid, as much as I hate too, I would have to pick Raist. Considering the differences in the two magical systems, the type of magic available to Raistlin is simply stronger in terms of sheer power...a Valdemar Adept lacks the sort of vaporize-an-entire-city-banish-your-soul-to-hell-destroy-your-family-tree-and- put-bill-gates-out-of-business OOMPH that a Krynn(?) ArchMage/DemiGod has. I think even Urtho would have been hard pressed...Consider that for a Valdemar/Talyedras Adept, making a Gate requires great energy and strength...for a Krynn(again, ?) mage, Gating (or Dimension Door, If I recall correctly) is a middle range spell...just my thoughts on the matter... When I read the Dragonlance >>stuff, I thought that Raistlin was a bit of a boob, a whiner, and too >>ull of himself. Hmmm.... I missed this first time around. Yes, Raistin has his problems, but let's look at his situation. He is a twin, except his twin got the strong body and he got the strong brain. When he was a child, he was teased and picked on by all the children in his village. But, his dear brother always beat them up for hurting his brother. Well, this did not do anything for Raistlin's self-esteem, so he did all ahe could, which was get into magic. He took a test at 21 that most mages never take at all, and if they do it isn't until they are 30 or so. His body is destroyed, but he passes the test. The last part of the test, he is al out of magic, and his brother casts a spell to save them (his brother is an illlusion, but he doesn't know that) and Raistlin kills his brother, because magic is HIS. Then, Raistlin saw his chance, and he did it. HE BECAME A GOD AND DESTROYED THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE! But his brother went home and found it destroyed, so he returned and told Raistlin the situation. One last thing to look at for Raistlin, has sort of to do with game maechanics, but the point should be there even if you do not play the game. On the world of Krynn, the gods have decided that when you reach level 18, you may not advance further. If you want to, you must leave Krynn, they provide the transportation. Raistlin is a 22nd level mage, and he is still in Krynn! Reason? THE GODS ARE AFRAID OF HIM! I've always wondered about this also and to throw a bit more confusion into the mix check this quote from MPromise. It is from where Van is checking out Jisa's potential. "She'll likely be King's Own after Shavri. ... Remember, for the presumptive King's Own, that won't be a bonded Choosing--she won't bond until--until she gets the office. Then she'll bond with Taver." (p. 48) Does this mean she won't bond at all or will it just be a "light" bond. It doesn't seem fair to Jisa to not bond with her Companion when the bonding to Taver could possible be many many years down the road. Thoughts anyone? WTTW Listsibs, Bard Clarion, a.k.a. If a god can't beat Raistlin, what chance does little mortal Vanyel stand a chance?>> Well, (foolish grin), I suppose I'll have to stick up for little mortal Van.. Really, I think he'd win, depending on the circumstances. But it'd be a heck of a fight. My reasons for thinking this: Raistlin, for all his power, is severely limited compared to Van. He has to use the power that comes from himself--he can't use outside power sources; they don't exist in Krynn. Once he's cast a spell he has to relearn it, and the act of casting even a small spell tires him. Van, however, can pull power from other sources. Granted, on Krynn or in a place without outside power sources, "Power Word: Die" would really cramp his style. But if he had a few nodes, or the Haven Heartstone.. He also has more flexibility, and his spells are often (in comparison) easier to cast, since he doesn't have to speak or read them aloud, and doesn't (usually) need spell components. ********************************************************************* In reference to Justin and Leryyn Twoblade, now that I have my copy of By The Sword... "As it happens, the son of a good friend of mine just took over a bonded Company. They're called the Skybolts; they're scout-skirmishers, like my old Company, the Sunhawks. Lerryn Twoblades is the Captain's name..." (Tarma, p. 201) So he /is/ Justin's son; I just somehow missed it.
