But Raistlin sounded like a fascinating character--more complex than the usual fantasy villain. Yep, I'd agree that Raistlin is probably full of himself. Quick paraphrasing: Talia wakes up (by what she dosen't know)/ sees Elspeth walking towards the Field/ mind-touches her and gets a sense of "purpose" but no real thoughts/ follows/ gets knocked down lots because of wind/ "She mindcalled Rolan for help-and could not reach him-or rather she could reach him but he was paying no attention to her whatsoever; his whole being was focused on-what it was she could not say, but it demanded all his concentration; for he was absorbed in it with such intensity that he was shutting everything and everyone else out."/ follows and falls some more/ "She was halfway to the grove when she looked up from yet another fall to see that it was-Gods!-glowing faintly from within. She shook her head, blinking, certain that her eyes were playing tricks on her. The glow remained, scarcely brighter than foxfire, but unmistakably there."/ She starts to get up/ the world spins and she collapses/ world returns to normal and wind dies off/ Elspeth shows up still in a "trance"/ then Rolan messes with her mind to forget things, and Elspeth and Talia are drained. Does this strike anyone else as the description of a Gate? Do Grove-born Companions gate in from somewhere? The Havens? Or is there something else involved in being Grove-born? Some interesting facts: 1. Companions are reincarnated Heralds. Some (like Sayvil) knew magic, and seem to retain that knowledge. 2. Companions were involved in Vanyels spell to make people "forget" magic in Valdemar. (By Gwena's admission in WOF) 3. Companions channel and direct ley-line and node energy. And can pull energy from their Chosen. 4. The weather is only bad after you Gate if no other minor mages do anything to smooth the weather patterns. Maybe not, but it struck me as so obvious I was waiting for Gwena to turn out to be a fake or something that another mage had gated in. (I know, not possible, but it was one of those "just one more chapter, then I really gotta go to sleep" nights.) Am I crazy, or misreading this? Inquiring minds want to know. Since '96 I'm a student at a vocational school, learning to be a Technical Assistant specializing in biology. Well, another 7 months to go, then I'll hopefully be entering the workforce :) . I'm a Misty-fan ever since reading WoFate in '93, not realizing I'd read "Swordsworn" a long time before that. I'm not so up-to-date with her books, SRising being the most recent Valdemar book I've read. Hardcovers are way beyond my financial limit, this being one of the reasons I haven't read _Owlflight_ yet. But I'd like to know if I was right about it, musing about it when the book was nothing but a rumour, that the main character would be a male Tayledras and shaych in addition to that. At that time, I was just disappointed that Misty never came up with a female Tayledras as a main character or one that has more that just 1 or 2 lines. I don't think that Di Tregarde would get along that well with the Executioner ("I don't date vampires. I kill them." - can you tell I love that series? I think the bond that Jisa, or any Presumptive King's/Queen's Own, experiences would be on par with what Karal experiences with Florian. They aren't Bonded, but that doesn't diminish the relationship between the two, and, especially for the King's Own, the mere fact that it is his/her duty to be involved with that sort of "psuedo"-Bonding would outweigh any misgivings or second thoughts about the justice of such a bond.
