If you are in doubt as to whether you're still subscribed, send a message with a blank subject (or the words no subject, or white chocolate, or something else silly) and a body of REVIEW or RECIPIENTS. This will cause Vanyel to send you a list of everyone who's subscribed to the list. You can go through that list and see if your email address is still there, and if it isn't you can resubscribe. (If you accidentally left your sig on the message, Vanyel will send you what you asked for and an error message too... ignore the error message and next time turn off your sig ) The list doesn't always dump 40+ messages in your mailbox every morning (and boy am I glad it doesn't... I'd have even more problems keeping up with "real life" then). If you *did* get dumped off the list, you can check the digests archive at http://www.herald.co.uk/pub/lists/lackey-archives/ and look for the digest(s) for the date you missed. Or you can use the information in the FAQs and the Newbiefest to get Vanyel to send a listing of the availible digests to you via email, and you can pick the ones you want (hint: the digest files are named yymmdd-digest#, so it's pretty easy to tell which ones are for the day you missed). And then you can get knocked off the list and *still* not miss anything.... Yes, that's quite true... however, I disagree with the commands Emily gave. Far more efficient than using RECIPIENTS or REVIEW, which will send you a list of around 400 people, there is a command which will tell you which lists (if any) you are subscribed to at herald.co.uk. Simply send a message with a blank topic or 'No Subject' and the following message: WHICH Vanyel will than respond to this query by listing which lists you are subscribed to. If you're not subscribed to any, listproc will still respond. I would like to point out, however, that over this weekend, the problem was that Vanyel went down. How do I know this? Because I sent out a which which wasn't answered for over 12 hours. Remember, if Vanyel does not respond to a command you sent it, it's not because of bad syntax, but because he's busy or indisposed and hasn't gotten there yet. Other ideas? Maybe it's just a >loophole... The reason why Van isn't Chosen as King's Own is because the Companions already had a candidate. The fact that Van was afraid of the prospect was just a fear borne out of the importance of his position---which, taking into accounts, is part of the reason why he WASN'T Chosen as King's Own. The reason he had such a strong bond with 'Fandes was because they were meant to be together. I don't think that any Herald is even made presumptive King's/Queen's Own if the current holder of that position is in no exceptional danger of dying. Look at Talia right now. There's no talk of the next Herald to fill the position. It won't be Elspeth---she has a different position to hold than being confined to Haven. Besides, her Bond with Gwena is strong. I don't think that any Herald meant to be King's/Queen's Own would be Chosen (in the common sense of the word) by a Companion. The Herald in question would most likely be led to believe, up to the point that it was common knowledge around the Collegium, that the Bonding he/she experiences is the common Bond between a Companion and his/her Herald. Daren just made a quick sort of generalization, I think. We know she can fight on foot, she just doesn't unless she has to.. which is why in the final battle against Ancar, after Hellsbane gets taken out, she looks for a riderless horse to grab. She's more used to fighting on horseback. Feel free to tell me I'm crazy.. it happens all the time. ********************************************************************** About Di Tregarde vs. Anita Blake.... I didn't say they'd be busom buddies, I said it'd likely be a good fight. But they do have stuff in common (and I don't mean drop-dead gorgeous vampire, um, buddies). On no-spoiler request, I will not speak of The Killing Dance... but if you're pro-Richard, you won't be happy with it. As for the Huff heroine and Di, since I haven't read any Huff, I couldn't say. ********************************************************************** And, the Monarch's Own Companion Choosing Vanyel: Since Vanyel was never intended to be Monarch's Own, there was no reason for his bond with Yfandes not to be as deep as possible. His worries about it were merely a touch of his usual paranoia.. fairly simple, from my perspective. :) ********************************************************************** The rest of this is fluff (my petition). Read if you want, critique if you like, skip over if you must. Leave your Cold Iron at the door. Raven Darkblade stopped at the edge of the faerie ring and looked back at her traveling companions. "This is it?" Tristan, coming up behind her, nodded gravely. His half-brother Lucian smiled reassuringly. Raven attempted to grin back. It didn't work. "Are you sure about this?" "It is not I who must be sure," Tristan responded. 'Great,' Raven thought. 'My mentor is a gods-cursed inscrutable elf. Does wonders for my self-assurance.' "Hush, sol'enel," Lucian admonished the elder elflord. "A little uncertainty is justifiable." "I'm sure, I'm sure," Raven said hastily. The last time the two elves had started arguing, it had lasted all day and well into the night, until Kat, Lucian's human partner, had threatened to knock their heads together. "Can we just get this started before the moon sets?" "With pleasure," Lucian replied, drawing a cloth-wrapped bundle from his pack and unwrapping the gleaming silver flute. He presented it to Raven. "Do as I taught thee." Raven accepted the flute gingerly and raised it to her lips as she stepped into the faerie ring. 'Confident,' she thought. 'I am confident. I am... insane.' Taking a deep breath, she began to play. The notes spilled forth like liquid silver, sounding just as they had the countless times Lucian had demonstrated the call. 'Confident,' Raven reminded herself. 'It has to be perfect, or the door won't open...' Fearlessly, she played on, until the end, holding the final note -so- until it died away on the breeze.... Raven smiled. It had been perfect. The air within the stone arch in the center of the faerie ring blurred, then pulled aside like a curtain, revealing a tunnel lit by a soft, indistinct radiance. She turned back to face her friends. "Well done," Lucian told her, smiling. "I knew it was in thee." Raven grinned ruefully. "I wish you'd told me." "Thou knew it as well," Tristan said with a slight smile. "Thou merely did not know thou knew it." "Talk in riddles, will you?" Raven said, a bit testily. Lucian laughed and stepped to the edge of the faerie ring to drop a kiss on Raven's forehead. "For luck," he said. Raven frowned. "You aren't coming?" "We cannot," Tristan told her. The elves of Karilanth are.. estranged.. from she whom thy quest is for. We are not so pure a breed." "Never fear," Lucian said with a cheerful grin. "Even when we are not with thee, we are with thee." Raven sighed and shook her head. "More riddles. I don't suppose you could give me a tip?" Tristan chuckkled. "When thou presentest thyself, try to say thy words in the manner of my brother." Lucian laughed. "Indeed," he said. "In very deed." "Cute," Raven muttered. With a final wave, she turned and stepped through the arch into the tunnel. 'Confident. I am confident.' Raven repeated the words in her mind like a mantra as she walked through the tunnel. 'I am an idiot. I'm a fighter, for crying out loud. I'm not High Pristess material...' Raven shook her head. 'Lucian thinks I can do it. Tristan thinks I can do it. At least, I think he thinks I can do it.. well... Anyhow..' She rounded a bend and the tunnel's end came into view. 'Well, here goes nothing..' Stiffening her spine and lifting her chin, she stepped into the large, light-filled hall with a majestic air that--she hoped--Tristan would have been proud of. She walked past graceful, cat-eyed elves in brilliant silks and glittering jewels, dryads crowned with fesh spring flowers, faeries with diaphanous wings, and beings she could not identify, stepping purposefully toward the dais at the other end of the hall, upon which, on her silver throne, sat a slender, regal woman with an enigmatic face--Dax the Eternal, in her guise as the Goddess of Elves. The goddess's serene gaze was upon Raven as she stopped at the foot of the dais. Curtsy, Tristan's voice whispered in her mind. 'Curtsy, indeed,' Raven thought somewhat irreverently. 'You can't curtsy in breeches and knee-high boots, even if they are elven-made and worth enough to feed an entire human township.' Instead she bowed, a full court bow, until she knelt with her forehead just touching the marble floor. Then, miraculously, she got to her feet without having to scramble. "My lady," she said, her voice clear, "I present to thee my petition to be named thy High Priestess. My reasons are thus--I have long lived with the humans that are my brethren, and among them there is often suspicion, and even fear, of thy--children." Raven gestured to the faerie folk gathered about the goddess. "I wish to work to abate this fear, that those of thy children who choose to walk among humans need not fear for their lives should their natures be revealed. More, I have become friends with one of the elflords of Karilanth in the land above this realm, and a Singer of that land, and I am able to act as a liason between their land and thee if such is thy wish. And," Raven added heavily, "my former Captain has recently shared her soul with one of thy estranged children, and I am somewhat at a loss as to how to deal with her." Raven drew her ebon-bladed longsword and laid it at the foot of the dais. "To seal my petition I offer thee my sword, the Dark-blade from which I take my name, and this--" from her belt-pouch she took a gauze-wrapped object, and unwrapped it. A black feather, its color as soft as a storm cloud, but flashing with silver sparks. The shaft glittered with tiny diamond and sapphire beads and delicate silver wire, and from the beaded ties that hung from the end of the shaft dangled gleaming ovals of onyx. "A feather shed from the wing of Stormchaser the black pegasus, a token of his friendship with me, decorated by artisans of Karilanth as a sign of their goodwill." She laid the feather gently atop the dark blade of her sword, and kneeled. "I humbly await thy answer," she said, and looked up to the goddess--neither hopefully nor expectantly; merely waiting. ********************************************************************** Zha'hai'allav'a, and chocolate caramel sheep for the long post, Raven Darkblade ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 1404 **********************************
