Hmmmm. First, I think Sara is right about the Japanese not limiting themselves to Japanese only material for anime. In fact, a lot of really good anime is rooted in Western traditions of fantasy and sci-fi. E.g., Record of Lodoss War, The Legend of Arislan, etc. And I have seen some really interesting Japanese historical anime about China (during the Warring States period, but I forget the title) and other things. However, "the Hobbit" and "the Return of the King" were not done by the Japanese. Both movies were Rankin/Bass productions (as was the exquisite "Last Unicorn"). Yes, they employed some Japanese animators, IIRC, but they were an American production company and most of the "talent" (voices) were American actors. "The Lord of the Rings" was definitely an American venture. Ralph Bakshi was the creative drive behind it and it was done on a shoe-string in the US. Now, that being said, I freely admit the possibility that there may, in fact, be Japanese anime versions of all three Tolkien-based films that I have no knowledge of. If that is the case, and that was what Sara was saying, then okay. Casting: BTW, I would also like to put in a vote for Vanyel: I would also like to see Keanu Reeves in the role. I mean, realistically, Michael Praed is just too old at this point, even for the older versions of Vanyel. I think that Leaf Phoenix as the young Van and Keanu as the older one would be very nice. And, yes, I think that Keanu can act well enough to play Van. He does troubled and angst-ridden very well, can be playful, and has edgy moments too. BTW, anyone take the time to Little Buddha? He was amazing as Siddhartha. Also, I finally decided on the perfect Kero: Cory Everson. For those of you who watch Hercules, she had a rather memorable guest appearance as a female blacksmith who wore improbably sexy leather outfits and semi-romanced Herc. She is a former Miss Universe (she held the title for an unreasonably large number of consecutive years and retired undefeated), but is still very pretty. Sexuality: First, I think that Van's sexuality is crucial to the development of LHM. After all, if he had been straight, the story would never have gone anywhere: no reason for Withen to hate/fear him, no relationship with Tylendel, no problems with Medren, no Stefen, etc. By creating a world where we, as readers, are insulated from the worst of the negative reactions to homosexuality (although, we are shown and told that such reactions exist), Misty creates a Secondary World where gay, lesbian, and straight allies can feel "at home" and even welcomed. I haven't really read her books in the Lark and Wren world or the urban fantasy stuff, so I can't comment on the cross-species relationships. If you are interested in a book that really explores the issues of cross-species romantic entanglements, I would recommend a series of books by Lisanne Norman about e.t. contact. I can't remember the names of the first two books, but the last book is called "Fire Margins" and is about a Terran/Sholan couple (Sholans are felinoid ETs). Anne McCaffrey has expanded one of her short stories (and you really should see her comments on the story) into a trilogy of novels, the first of which is called Freedom's Landing. The main character is a human woman in love with an alien. She has another book called Restoree that is the same theme, though innocuous since the alien is completely humanoid. Also, her entire "Ship Who Sang" series features the recurrent theme of love between the brain-ships and humans. And of course, the myriad ringing of the changes on the Beauty and the Beast theme all feature this dilemma: the young woman who falls in love with a beast. Anyway, talk to y'all later. I believe it got a PG rating, did awful in the theatres, and Disney was so embarassed they never released it on video (i challange you to find a copy!) I tend to forget that most people don't have the unfortunate habit of crying at books but taking 5 or 6 mental steps back and pretending nothing's wrong when its a real life problem. I very rarely laugh out loud at things, the number of times I've been accused of being humourless. The odd thing is that although all the brainship series (Anne McCaffrey) books have really sad bits in them what I read 'em for is the sense of humour. ---------------------- Elizabeth Hoffman E.G.Hoffman-+AT+-soton.ac.uk ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Dec 1997 13:22:51 -0600 From: "Dawn Anderson" To: Subject: Re: Vanyel Message-ID: <01bd00ea$03c48540$0100007f-+AT+-localhost> I always thought Adrian Paul the Highlander would make a good older Van from the last book. Personally, I liked _The Princess Bride_ a LOT better as a movie than a book. I found the book to be harder to get through, not as interesting, and all those comments about denim and stew, and whatnot (personally, trying to find a TIME PERIOD for the book was very difficult, cause WHEN was denim invented? Any1 who's read the book knows what I mean) Although I own the book, and read it occassionally, the movie was much better... As for Misty, I think it would be a tragedy to relegate these wonderful books to saturday morning cartoons, but a serious movie, if done by the right actors/directors/etc could work someday...IF Misty had charge of writing the screenplay, of course... As for the Bardic books, I just finished The Eagle and the Nightingales, and the relationship between Nightingale and the birdguy (whateverhisnamewas) was interesting...Kind of funny how they mentioned that he wasn't exactly TOTALLY equipped like a bird, and there was a reason he wore a vest/modesty cloth...:) And Anne McCaffery's Freedom's books (GEEZ I can't wait for the 3rd to come out!) are really good for that interspecies thing...She addresses it so good, to the point of having problems because there could be no children in the offing...:) One last thing, a request really. I have no right to complain probably, and I have no problems with getting 100's of emails or I wouldn't be ON the list, but I hav enoticed a few people who's names come up several times in a day..Simply cause they write 1 or 2 liners in each one responding to a diff post...PLEASE braid, or something, so that you don't have several 1liners...Thanks... In response to it not being important, one has to understand that heterosexuality is shoved down EVERYONE'S throats. You never see jewelry commercials with two men exchanging rings, or two women doing the same...In magazine ads, unless they are SPECIFICALLY geared for homosexuals, it's always a man wrestling in the sand with a woman as the ocean washes up around them advertising some cologne. These magazines, television, newspapers are not specifically geared toward heterosexuals. Time is not orientation specific, yet it does have ads in it for the "American Family"--something that has been redefined since the development of the term in the 1950's. To see, in a genre of literature that, for me, was an escape, something like what Vanyel and 'Lendel/Stef had or what Keren/Sherril/Ylsa had makes me feel human...Makes me NOT feel different because someone else out there understands that preference is nothing---only love matters. You don't always see that in people. That's what's important to me when I read the Last Herald-Mage Trilogy. It may not be important to anyone else, but it is one of the MAIN reasons that I pick up the book anytime I need a pick me up away from the world. That is the world that I choose to enter and I'm glad it has people like me... OK. Another trip to Here's the deal. Bedlam's Bard is the Sci Fi Bk Club's compilation of the first two books. It did already come out, and it was written by Mercedes Lackey *and* Ellen Guon from what I remember. It was also incidentally the first time I'd ever heard of Misty. the book got sent to me because it was the selection of the month and I forgot to send the slip back in time. That was an interesting introduction to Mercedes Lackey . I later took AoQ out of the public library and I was hooked. On the subject of who to play Vanyel in a movie version, I still vote for Johnny Depp. He really is a phenomenal actor, and if anybody questions his beauty they should see Don Juan DeMarco again. Also, There is apparantly a Pern movie in the works. They're still working on the script according to the Dragonlady herself. I don't know the details. She emailed me once in response to my question about the movie (as in were the rumors true?) and said that the script was in progress and it would probably be shot in Ireland. Other than that I don't know. I can't wait for the new Pern book to come out. It's supposed to be a biography of Master Robinton (my favorite character in those books easily.). well, I have to go. I have to come up with subcommittee lists for a Model UN conference I'm running. Zhai'helleva, Firebird.... >Really sorry about the short post and long quote. Do you find the Hobbit in Japanese with English subtitles? No. A lot of American cartoons have Japanese names in the credits (like Voltron. Granted, Voltron is originally a Japanese character, but the series by Hanna_Barbara is not Japanese although many of Hanna'Barbera's cartoons are done by Japanese artists). IMHO, anime is not the cartoon style Misty...or if it is done, don't put it in the Anime section. SAILOR MOON does not belong in the Anime section! YES, I saind SAILOR MOON does not belong in Anime. Now, the day they release the unedited versions of Sailor Moon in US, then it can go in Anime section, but DiC's Sailor Moon is a kids version of Sailor Moon, not the original Japanese anime. It was the love between him and Lyndel and Stef that mattered, not their homosexuality. I gave it to my uncle who was to put it mildy was homophobic, and I started to think a bit about it. I think the reason that their sexuality was never an issue was because she portrayed it so natuarally that the issue was love not the sex of the partner. Her books make you see the characters as people not as homo or heterosexual............well....thanks for listening.. I have seen The Black Cauldron in video form, and to be quite honest I think that the reason that the movie failed was because it was plain bad. It was adapted from a good children's book without the detail of history, and therefore suffered from action without history. there was just no following at the teen-age level for a movie about a children's book. Not that I don't love Alexander's books I think that a straight to video movie would be good though if it was done with Misty's advice and Japanesse artists. Just my two cents. The story would have gone fine if Van was straight, it would just be a slightly different story... For example: Withen hated/feared Van without knowing he was shaych. Van was small and slender and was a good minstrel. He also played the flirt games with the best of them. In the Alternate Last Herald Mage (A-LHM), Van could just not like being hunted by women (he doesn't like being hunted by anyone) and Withen against him becoming a foppish, lazy courtier instead of a solid lord like himself. In A-LHM, Tylendel is a girl, that he begins to fall for, sophisticated, yet easy to get along with, patient and willing to let him make the first move. Life-bond ensues. Twin brother killed, story continues... In, A-LHM, Van decides that he will never love again, since he lost his life-bond and survived. And so Steffana has to carefully win him over. He is tired of all the people who worship him and just wants to be himself. Van still hates going home because Within first wants him to marry and father an heir, then, is really against those "alternative" lifestyles, like living together without a proper marriage. (Side note...Why is it that only the gay/lesbian couples survive the demise of their Life-bonded? Van and Tylendel, Stef and Van, Sherry and Whats-her-name. Okay, before someone else says it...*THIS IS HUMOR***** Like, maybe its because a gay/lesbian bond isn't as strong as a hetro bond, you know. *Alternate theory, thrown back with righteous indignation**** No, its because we are stronger, and not so co-dependant and we are individuals who have had to learn to stand on our own against the world!!)*giggle* There, now I've made fun of myself, so anyone who gets righteously indignant will feel sheepish *giggle* and won't post to try and say I'm an insensitive slime!!! (Aw, I caught you feeling the sheep...) Oh, yeah, Medrina, Looks like long lost love, but is only 9 or 10...no robbing the cradle allowed. Then conclusion follows as per LHM...So, with only a few changes it could still be a viable, well written, involving story. Yes, I agree sexuality has a lot to do with the story, but it could be either kind of sexuality...homo or hetro. Personally, I like it the way it is, it was sensitively done, that two people could care so greatly and well. I wish Misty would write a hetero life-bond that had the depth of development and not just the "Oh, boy meets girl falls in love they of course lifebond." That is pat plot for any Harlequin romance. ******************************* Well enough for now..
