I don't get queasy when I see a hetero couple together and happy; I think "wow, they look really happy together. So ya going to get some of those - Talia: She had nothing to lose when she tried to commit suicide .. and taking that much arganol will do that to you. Whether it was an act of desperation or courage depends on your own perceptions. I have had 2 cousins commit suicide and also at least one student and colleague. Why they did so, I will never know ... especially the student. But I do know the feeling of wanting to get out of something really badly and when suicide has seemed the answer. No, I did not do it. But I have been a nurse long enough to know of the incredible numbers of overdoses etc that come through A&E what you USA people call ER. I also know that as Xmas comes closer so will those numbers increase. While we discuss this thread, let me tell you, my listsibs, that it is important, yea imperative, that if you feel this way ALWAYS find some-one to talk to. Pain is hard to endure but when discussed with another becomes easier. While your experience is unique to you, others may have had similar experiences and can partially be empathic with you. Callisto: now there's a gal who enjoys being evil. But as pointed out can be an angel as well. We in Ausland haven't yet seen her deification so I look forward to that. I agree, I think she would make an excellent Kero - but my heart belongs to Xena.(gryn) Sexuality: I reckon that I might be the oldest gay person on this list (46) - mind you - I feel like I am 25. I have made several posts about sexuality before so I will try not to re-iterate this. I will NOT comment on the religious thread at all. I like seeing any people being affectionate so long as it is consensual and as non-power based as possible. That means friends, family, parents, lovers, married and non-married couples. I dinna care what gender they are so long as it is based on friendship or love etc. I am a very affectionate person and being gay often means that I have to explain to other women that I am just being affectionate that if I was coming onto them then they WOULD know. Thye also know that I would never come onto a str8 woman - IMHO it is the easiest path to heartache. My str8 friends are also very affectionate with me, which is nice. I like seeing people kiss - especially good kisses and I rate the one between Dax and Lerana (sp) on ST:DS9 as GOOD and the one between Xena and Gabrielle when Gabrielle was married as lousy - but I guess it did happen (the scene in the hot tub almost made up for it! gryn). As a lesbian, I prefer to see kissing between 2 women, but any kiss in a storm.... I'm off to see k.d.lang tomorrow and I reckon I might see a few same-gender kisses there. Hey, this is an excellent idea. Isabelle Adjani comes to mind immediately. She is absolutely beautiful and an adorable actress. Re: Casting II Someone suggested casting other books/series. I discussed the topic with my sister who only read the Di Tregard (sp?) books so far. We found that Adrian Paul would make a splendid Andre. My sis also thought Brad Pitt would fit (*g*). We both agreed that we figured Andre as some swashbuckling stereotype Dracula from those very early "horror" movies. We even pictured him wearing one of those capes (or is it cloak?) No, just joking. Our suggestion for Di is Andy McDowell but we both thought she isn't the optimum cast. But for the lack of some other great actress we think she would do fine. Larry could be done by Emilio Estevez and Mark (was this really his name? He appeared in Burning Water but as my sis is hoarding all my Di books I can't look it up) would be splendidly done by Lou Diamond Phillips (sp?). Re: Sigs I agree with Lady SummerSunShine. Most sigs and quotes are as interesting as the mail itself. BTW, I spent my Sunday checking out all your homepages. It was great fun and they are done splendidly. Wish I could do it as excellently. I don't have one at the moment cause my boyfriend needed all the cost-free space we were provided for a page for our local animal shelter. Unfortunately it is still in German. I haven't had any time to do a translation yet. Re: Tayledras / Native Americans In this connection, I found their "sibs", the Shin'a'in, to be like the African Tuareg (is it the same word in English? Couldn't find it in my dict.): their looks, their way of living, their fondness of horses, etc. I know that on this Earth Native Americans and Tuareg are not related to each other, they don't even look similar. I know that and still imagine those two people in this way. Re: Favorite books My absolute fave is By the Sword with Kero as fave character. I liked her so much that I based one of my characters on her. (You know the letter game? My sis, living far, far away from me, and I invented a nice little world with two not so nice girls/women roaming this world in search of adventure. My sis writes a letter to me trying to influence what happens with my characters and I try to do the same with hers. It's great fun) I'm undecided as to second place: LHM or Di Tregard (sp?). I have neither read the Storm nor the Gryphon trilogy nor any of the Bard or SERRAted Edge books. They are REALLY hard to find in Germany. Only Arrows is available in translation and they started publishing the Bard series. But as translations of fantasy are never done well enough for my taste I have to wait until I visit the UK or the USA next year to buy the remaining lot. I know that it is possible to have them shipped from either country (I even found some nice bookshops on the net) but transportation fees are high and it takes ages for a parcel to arrive. This doesn't mean they don't affect me. I've talked to my mom about it, and she says that I will be someday, that I'm going through some sort of teen seperating myself from my emotions thing (that's not what she said, but I can't think of the word that I want). Anyhoo, someone said a couple days ago that you would have to be made of ice? stone? to not cry while reading LHM, and I was a bit offended. ***I finnally have the time to de-lurk! So I thought I would respond to this. I didn't used to be a cryer, when I was younger. When my grandmother died when I was 19, I didn't cry, even though I was very close to her. Then about a year later, I was at a store and saw an old lady that looked a lot like my grandmother, and I started crying. When I was seeing a councilor a few years later, I mentioned this to her, and she said that sometimes our sub-concious minds push our real feelings inside because they are too painfull to deal with. Then when we are ready, our concious mind lets us feel them. Idealistically, we should deal with our emotions right away, so they don't come back to haunt us. Now, I try to deal with my emotions immediately. Therefore, sometimes I do cry at movies & books. The biggest tear jerkers for me were the movie "Ghost" and "ET" (for obvious reasons), and the book "Merlin" by Stephen Lawhead (because of the massive human slaughter). Also, the movie "The Goodby Girl" got to me. Hey, I'm a sucker for romance! You really missed a thing when you haven't read "Satanic, Versus". And then there is "Sisters in Fantasy II" containing "Wet Wings" which offers a very disturbing outlook into the future. It has been ages since I last read Obreakers (perhaps someone out there can supply the textevd), but the feeling I got was that he was suffering from something like rheumatoid arthritis (RA), tho I may be well off base there. And if it were RA, that is a condition where there definitely seems to be a genetic predisposition. Of course, there is no real evidence that physiology in Velgarth works exactly the same as in our everyday world, or that the diseases are the same, tho a lot of the Healer's non-psychic treatments and diagnosis seem to indicate that it does. Anyone else with a healthcare background willing to hazard a guess? Ailsa? Hmmm.....what I wonder is....would the Star-Eyed or Need herself have intervened if Jadrek's genes had been unsound for the clan? I had never thought about that. >In a message dated 97-12-06 09:00:27 EST, Songhawk writes: > ><< I will admit that maybe it was suicide, but > I'm still convinced that it wasn't complete suicide. It makes it much easier to really discuss them when we are basing the discussion on what happened according to the author, and if necessary speculate from there. ===== As for the Misty short stories, there are more than the ones in S&S, since her work has been published in other anthologies as well. I like your theory, given that Talia went on to help in the alliance with Karse, her contacts with those wangon traders helped get Elspeth and company into Hardon unnoticed. And last of all that I can remember, in the Mage Storm series, she brought An`desha and Karal together. One last thing, if Talia died, wouldn't Dirk have willed himself to death, given that their lifebonded? *********************************** Mary Adams -- tigger-+AT+-deskmedia.com Albert Lea, MN, USA ---<-<-+AT+- -+AT+->->--- *********************************** ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Dec 1997 17:27:40 EST From: GodesCarla To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Taran from Prydain Message-ID: <8a6c8d13.348c7810-+AT+-aol.com> In a message dated 97-12-08 09:00:50 EST, you write: John E. I, for one, most often find your posts interesting, unagressive, and relevant. Don't downplay yourself! Well, that was less than I normally post. Oh well, I guess there just weren't as many statements I felt I needed to respond to. I also would like to say that I think that the sexuality discussion is going very well. I have not felt the need to say anything, but I have been avidly observing and I think that everybody is "behaving" very nicely. (as if you were all dogs or something, right?) But it's just not that often that such a large group of people (yes, even adults) are mature enough to discuss such a touchy subject so calmly. And, last but not least, I would like to make a comment about the list itself: THIS IS GREAT! I am so glad that I found out about this list and decided to join. I really look forward to reading everybody's posts each day, and I'm also glad just to be able to talk to people who don't say "Heralds? Companions? Whatchyou talkin' bout?" Does anyone remember the title? My copy of the book is packed away somewhere. ObMisty--Re casting Vanyel...I had a weird thought. If Geddy Lee of the rock group Rush were younger, I could see him as Vanyel. It'd have to be Geddy with the longer hair, though. Message-ID: <8535dfd9.348c916d-+AT+-aol.com> Greetings to everyone! I wanted to write a quick note and say hello! I am new to the list, having only recently gotten around to searching the internet for Mercedes Lackey links before I put together my own page for her! I have been reading her books since I was in high school, and to give you a point of reference, I already have my BA and my first real job. The first book I ever read was By the Sword. I was looking for something to read and I was attracted to the cover. I whipped right through it, and the next set I read was the Last Herald Mage. Magic's Pawn was all I needed to get me hooked. I may have to go out and get a new set as the ones I'd bought originally are suffering from their multiple readings. Does anyone know if these were ever released in hardcover and where I might be able to get a set? It's really worth the money! Well, that is all for now. I may be quiet for a while, prefering to lurk until I can get a feel for all of you! I'm glad I found you! Barb! "Wings? I don't have wings." "Of course not. I've only read The Castle of Llyr and Taran Wanderer. The cover of Taran Wanderer, on which is a young black-haired boy holding the reins of Melynlas the silver-maned stallion, who has blue eyes, reminds me of a young Vanyel.
