I didn't get a copy of Autumnwing's post but I thank you for saying that my diatribes are interesting...Thank you... I remember the conversation that we were all having and the Companions knowing who their Chosen would be (or something close to that). I started rereading WoFate and noticed a passage within Elspeth's thoughts. While rationalizing leaving to go look for a mage, Elspeth thinks about the twins becoming Heirs because the Companions follow them in the Field. Gwena/Elspeth says that there will be a fight when they are of Choosing age as to who will Choose the twins...Just something I noticed...I'm not sure I intended this to go somewhere but I'm hoping someone will take this and run with it. Up to now I only have one CD called "the mask and the mirror" which is one of my favourites. If you like her music did anybody try "Clannad" as well? They play (or plaid, I think they don't exist any longer) a mixture of Celtic music and rock often sung in Gaelic which is just great. Their ealier CDs are less rock and more Celtic. Re: Kero and Eldan Allright, allright, I admit I made a mistake when I wrote Kero and Eldan were lifebonded. I checked my files and yes, it says this is not a lifebond. Sigourney Weaver (sp?) would be great as either Ylsa or Keren (haven't read the books for some time so I'm not so sure about who is who). And I agrre Jaye Davidson would make an excellent Vanyel. Re: Recommendations I know there is nothing compared to Misty but as she doesn't write a book a day I have to read someone else. (I promise I'm doing regular re-reads!) What other authors / books would you recommend? Any favourites? BTW: Thank you, Raven Darkblade, for supporting me in the Tolkien affair. You are absolutely right. If anybody wrote like Tolkien or created creatures like his I would immediately bore myself to dead or stop reading Fantasy which comes close to dying (sp?). I had to translate a book called "Moonglow" (by Sharon Wagner) dealing with woman meets man they fall in love and marry and live happily ever after and I thought I'd fall asleep while typing. The pink cover should have warned me! *sigh* This is the hard way to earn one's living. Re: Talia / Dirk Either Dirk would have died if Talia had died or somebody else would have bonded with him as was the case with Van and 'Lendel. Message-ID: Hi guys! This is my first posting, although I've been on the list for a while...absorbing topics of conversation, so here's my 2cents... Casting: I'm really not sure who could play any of the characters, I have them set in my mind such a certian way....I can't see any actors I know looking like them and acting like them in the way I imagine....I think it would be one of those movies that I wouldnt like, not because of the subject (I LOVE LHM, AOTQ, and all the rest...), but because it didn't fit in to the picture in my head.......(don't get me wrong... I love Leonardo DiCaprio and Keanu Reeves, the Xena people, and all the rest..., but still !!!) The Sexuality Thing: My two fav characters of all the books by Misty that I've read are: Vanyel and Eric. They are my favorites, i think because of their relationships with others-- Van because of the depth of his love for Stef, which I think had nothing to do with his sexual orientation, and Eric because of his music and how it brought him, Beth, and Kory together... Being str8 and female, i have no problems with who they love, i see the depth that they love those they love ( I'm probably not making much sense, forgive me...It's just the way I think...) and that is what made me read the LHM series and Knights of G and S as many times as I have (believe me, it's been quite a few times in fact...). Okay, in someone's post ( I cant remember who) Velgarth was mentioned... Did i miss something? Just curious.... I'm always afraid I'll offend someone, so if I do, please let me know. If I do, I apologise beforehand. :) Tayledras: I have always seen the Tayledras as sort of Native American (even though I love Tolkien's elves...), though just as I see the Native Americans as an earthy red color (just an image of their culture... I see things in colors...) I have always seen the Talydras as white and blue... colors I associate with the Elves and Sidhe. They seem very nature-oriented, but more to the earth itself... Elves I have always seen as magically-oriented... not that i'm disagreeing with whoever said they were similar... I see that as well... They, like the Sidhe, have drawn back into their own sort of "Underhill" due to the seeming loss of magic... Anyway, I have to go.... Thanks for listening to my babbling :) Andi ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Dec 1997 20:27:38 EST From: Yagathai To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Gabby/Autrolicus (sp) and males in Misty's work Message-ID: <4c8af502.348df00f-+AT+-aol.com> In a message dated 97-12-09 20:01:32 EST, you write: << >And, am I the only one who thinks Gabby and Joxer should get together? Yes, I think they should get together, although I feel sorry for Gabby, however Jox has his moments in the sun. I almost think Autolicus would be a better match, but then, he's cute and such a rogue. He's also a loose Daxi...a definate danger.>> Hmmm... the world's best thief (Played masterfully by Bruce Campbell of Evil Dead and Brisco County Jr. fame) doesn't strike me as the Gabrielle-loving type. Perhaps a night or two, but past that... He'd love to get with Xena but that relationship would never work... Loose Daxi...? And to the main point of this mail... How many people agree with me that Misty just ain't that great at male characters? I can't think, at the moment, of any mainstream-contemporary- North-American-male type _main_ character in any of her solo books. I don't just mean in contemporary-North-American-male terms of just setting, but temperament as well. There are a few gay characters (Vanyel, for one) and a few definitely non-conventional male characters (Karal - much too sensitive to be a product of our public school system), but apart from Tannim from Chrome Circle (a book co-written by Larry Dixon, presumably a man (since he's married to Misty)) I can't think of any character types who'd be qualified by Tim Taylor as a true "manly man." Heck, even "If I Pay Thee Not in Gold," co- written by Piers Anthony (my first favorite author, sigh...) features a male lead who's not. Now, I realize that Misty's work is aimed at the female half of the populace, and that that portion of fantasy readership doesn't necessarily want to read about what they find around them each day. I also concede that the male characters in the Valdemar books are a product of a different environment, yadda yadda yadda. Those points aside, what do y'all think about her capability to write convincing male lead characters? Is she incapable or just unwilling? For that matter, is she capable of writing convincing female characters? Being a male meself, I don't know how convincing they are.
