My name is Susannah and I have been a fan of Mercedes Lackey for two short months. I just finished reading The Oathbound, Oathbreakers, and By The Sword. They are t'riffic books, and the music written for them is wonderful. I would like to know where I can get more of her books and the musical compositions. Also, has Misty done anything else besides write? In this, she excells. My only lingering question is by what standard are you judging what makes a man "manly" and the sincere belief whatever standard you are using is not as broad as it needs to be. And on that note, I must now go jump on my Harley, drive down to the local pub, swill some beer, and start a brawl. Just kidding, I never swill. jourgen has now let the soap box. >> Oy again! People seem to be misinterpretuing my original message right, left and center. I must be a bad letter-writer. To start with I meant no personal insult. I don't see why you have to resent my (admittedly overly-broad statement) that Merecedes Lackey writes for a predominantly female audience - of course males read her work and I'm not trying to suggest that she tailors her writing in any way to make more women than men buy it. By the same token, however, I think that it's safe to say that if we could get a hold of the sales figures for her books, the female buyers would substantially outnumber the male. Secondly, my "manly" male comment was a bit sarcastic (perhaps you aren't familiar with Tim Taylor and Home Improvement, a sitcom that deals with the whole manly man issue with tongue firmly in cheek). The "manly" that was used in my original comment was referring to the North American standard of manly that Tim Allen plays Tim Taylor) lampoons so very well. My own personal (and very narrow, if you like) standard for "manly" is as follows. A man should be able to face danger (notice - not face danger without fear, just face danger) and hold true to his beliefs. A man unwilling to risk his life for his loved ones or what he believes in is unmanly - if you take exception to the fact that I call a craven coward unmanly then I guess that's too bad. A man should be able to look thew elephant in the eye without running away. It's as simple as that. The puniest of 98-pound weaklings who is willing to face the school bully, knowing he will be beaten to an inch of his life is infinitely more manly that the football halfback who deserts his comrades on the battlefield. The soapbox is yours. Regarding your response, I must agree. My only adendum would be that (if I may paraphrase) standing up for what one belives despite impossible odds is not a male trait, but a human trait and is genderless. It is what makes human beings what they are. (And exactly what they are is a discussion for a completely diferent forum. Kinda popped into my head out of nowhere :) In _OathBreakers_ Kethry made Adept. But exactly where was she when she figured that out? I know that mages are longlived and everything, but I'm sure that she was in Valdemar past Vanyel's time, which means she shouldn't have been able to perform magic. However, not only did she simply perform magic, she called up manifestations. How did she manage that without getting creeped out? I don't remember her mentioning that she felt wierd by doing her manifestations, other than simple nervousness at what she was about to try to do. Something else...While reading the Arrows trilogy, we read that it's "relatively new" to have indoor latrines. In _Arrows Flight_ it was mentioned how some of the Waystations were "primitive" though. Maybe I'm too practical a person to be thinking about stuff like that in a fantasy book, but I was wondering how they took care of that need. Chamberpots? Going outside to the woods? Kris and Talia were stranded indoors for a month in the blizzard, for like 2 or 3 days they couldn't go outisde at all...Any thoughts? :) Jennie with the curiousity of a cat ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 1426 **********************************
