(Sheepish grin. Usually I'm the quote-master. I annoy my friends that way.) As to names, I've noticed repeated versions before, though usually not the major ones and usually the spelling's greatly changed.... There have been a few instances of main-char names being 'ported, though. :) Gwyna(Robin) of Bardic Voices and Gwena, Elspeth's Companion... Mero the halfblood of Elvenblood and Mero the cook in Arrows.. Herald Tantras in LHM, Kris's Companion Tantris, and Keren's Comapnion Dantris... Lissandra the Web Guardian in LHM, Lysandra the former love interest of Talaysen, and Yssandra, the name Alaramarana (sp) of The Elvenbane took when she posed as an elf. Also, a Herald killed in AotQ shared the name of King Valdemar's heir. :) It really doesn't bother me much. Good names are hard to come up with, I've discovered since I started writing. Zha'hai'allav'a, Raven Darkblade, Holy Hand of the Goddess of Elves. I'm rather fond of quotes, myself. I collect them, as well as the 'laws' I've displayed on my web page. Long sigs don't bother me in the least, unless they're attached to half-a-dozen one-line messages. >From ghosties and ghoulies and long-legged beasties and things that go bump in the night, Good Lord, deliver us! --Cornish prayer They were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Basically, not only > was I addicted, I was confused. I also read the Winds trilogy before The > Last Herald-Mage... had it all backwards, didn't I? I feel the best way to read the all series of books are the way I read them (I didn't mean to do it this way, but it worked out so well). I started with Arrows of the Queen, then went to the Last Herald-mage, then to Velgarth and By the Sword, and lastly, Mage Winds. Then I read to whatever came out, but I would go from the Mage Winds to the ones with the Griffon Skan (can't remember the names of the series) and then to the ones with Andesha in Valdemar (silly memory of mine). This way, I think you find out information basically the way you are supposed to. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Dec 1997 13:01:42 -0300 From: "Eleonora Scoseria" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: MIST: fluff Message-ID: <19971215130022.0da0c113.in-+AT+-multi.com.uy> Heyla, listsibs Several weeks ago, fluffy messages started being posted to the list under the mantle of the Order of Fluff, and they were generally short and Misty related and IMO mostly fun. The Council of Mist did not say a word since this list is a Mercedes Lackey mailing list, but it is also a place where friends gather, and a little fluff has always been welcome, specially when related to Misty. However, these past few days, the content of the fluffy msgs has changed. There have been at least 2 long and totally unrelated msgs (the smiley dict and the evil overlord one). The latter is over 20 KB which might not sound too impressive unless we consider that the list has over 300 subscribers. And in fact, at least one subscriber was sent over their disk-quota by one of those messages. Anyway, most discussion lists I have been on, use several different ways of sharing totally unrelated fluff with the list, so I thought I'd comment on them: - including a note in a general on-topic msg saying that you have something to share and that people can email you privately and you'll send it to them. - in the case of items that are on the web, adding the URL to an on-topic msg to the list saying that you found this or that interesting. - sharing fluff with the list as long as it it not outrageously long and adding an ObMisty at the end to promote on-topic discussion. This is not meant as a flame, but rather as a polite request to continue having fun without making the list server work more than necessary, without making the life of those who pay per byte of email more onerous, and without making those who wish to carry on a Misty discussion unhappy. There are reasons why this request was posted to the list, as opposed to being directed to each person who posted a long fluffy msg in private (as is the Council's custom). The reasons are that the same thing happened twice in a very short interval, there were other messages implying that those in the Order of Fluff felt honor-bound to be fluffy and that we do not really know all the people involved in the order, so we decided to say something in general so that we can continue to enjoy the discussions and the moderate friendly funny fluff. Kinda popped into my head >out >>of nowhere :) In _OathBreakers_ Kethry made Adept. But exactly where >was >>she when she figured that out? I know that mages are longlived and She was at the hunting lodge on the Rethwellan border, however the vronmdi spell only covers the area that was part of Valdemar when *it was cast* (ca. 798 AF) and, by comparing the maps in the various books, we find that Valdemar had expanded considerably by the time of Oathbreakers (ca. 1270 AF.) So a hunting lodge on the Rethwellan border at the later time is probably on territory that wasn't part of Valdemar in Vanyel's era. Message-ID: <199712151634.QAA16932-+AT+-brookes.ac.uk> Greetings all, the holiday season has begun, and a lot of people will go home, and many of those will no longer have access to their email. Sooooo....that leads to overflowing disk quotas and bouncing messages and an unhappy listmistress. And we don't want that, right? So, as Xmas courtesy to Mel, please, please, remember to unsubscribe from the list or set your mail on postpone. The difference is, that if you unsub you can't post to the list until you resub; while if you postpone, you do not get any list mail but you can still post to the list (from the same addy that you originally subbed from, of course). This is a repost of the instructions which Ele posted last week, for those of us with careless delete fingers who wiped it out without saving first. ========== If your email system does not let you leave the subject line blank, you can type No Subject. How do I unsubscribe from the list? Send a mail message to listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk with subject line blank and message body UNSUBSCRIBE MERCEDES-LACKEY If you have problems with this, contact the list owner. To resub to the list, you send a message to the listproc with the subject blank and as body of the message: SUBSCRIBE MERCEDES-LACKEY YOUR NAME ========== If you will be absent for some time, you may wish to consider the POSTPONE setting. This is like NOMAIL for lists run under Listserv; you remain subscribed to the list, but do not receive mail from it until you specifically request to start receiving mail again. To do this, send mail to listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk with message body SET MERCEDES-LACKEY MAIL POSTPONE - to cancel it, use one of the options above (ACK, NOACK, DIGEST). Do not forget the 'MAIL' part of the command - it won't work without it. And remember to leave the subect line blank, or write 'no subject' in it. ======= I hope this is useful. If you have any doubts or problems please contact anyone with Councillor of Mist in their sigs. Seasons Wishes :) Ailsa, Councillor of Mist. ____________________________________________________________________________ | Ailsa Reid areid-+AT+-brookes.ac.uk | | "What a night though it's one of seven, | | What a night for the dancing dead," | | (_Les Morts Dansent_ by Magnum) | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Dec 1997 11:14:02 PST From: "Rebecca McAllister" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: names of companions Message-ID: <19971215191403.103.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> > What about Vanyel's Aunt Savil and Kero's companion Sayvil? Ok, as the founding member of the Order of Fluff, I feel obliged to appologise for what went on. Please PLEASE _PLEASE_ take a good look at our Creed before posting anything, Knights. But I really believe that I am the one who should be held responsible because I should have done up some Fluff posting guides. Feel free to flame me! In the future, I will make sure to take some time and add them on to our web page. I would do this immidiatly, but I have a nasty head cold, and I've lost my voice and I'm not thinking to well. So please look out for a list of Guidelines in the near future. If you would, could the Knights please refrane from posting fluff. Withen represses emotions. Jervis represses emotions. It is mentioned that Withen wears the brown of his people, as do his sons- all except for Vanyel, who is called a "peacock" or a "clotheshorse" because he loves to find dramatic outfits. Dirk is always mis-matched and rumpled. For stereotypes, many of the straight men have definite prejudices against the shaych (Jaysen, Withen.) (the main character.) If you read those, don't forget to read Belgarath the Sorceror, the prequel. I read that one first, which made me read the others. You might consider reading it first. (it was slightly confusing b/c it is told in the form of Belgarath telling Belgarion the story of his life, and sometimes the characters interrupt him, but I thought it was otherwise a pretty good intro.)
