Tarma and Kethry remain favorites, and I'm looking to the new Oath book with great anticipatory jumping up and down [good for the figure; we might as well be efficient], drooling, high-pitched, ear-bleeding squeals, etc. Of the duology, _Oathbreakers_ is my favorite, for the depth of the mature, caring relationship revealed between Tarma and Kethry. The interactions with the children at the beginning are priceless, the more so for the scarcity of such episodes in Misty's oeuvre. Perhaps we'll see more of them in the new book. Jadrek's interactions and developing relationships with each member of the team are to be savored over and over again, like chocolate. I'm with Angie; what's with all the _Winds_ bashing? With the possible exception noted above, _Winds of Change_ is probably my favorite Misty book to date. Many even of Misty's books have the sense of rushing the reader along, of cramming too much into too few days. The leisurely exposition of _Change_ conveys the sense of the passage of time, allowing the readers to see/participate in the profound changes in the characters over time. Rich and complex, the developing relationship between Elspeth and Darkwind is satisfying on many levels; the gryphons add their own, indispensable coda. This book gives you, the reader, time--time to understand who the characters are at the beginning, to grow and change with them over time, to fully realize and be shaken to the depths by the extent of Falconsbane's vileness, to truly live the dénouement, with its laughter, tears, and [as always] gryphons. There's even plenty of action, in and out of the vale--something for everyone. Unfortunately for me, this book rather spoiled me, and I tend to judge subsequent books by it and to be disappointed when they fall short. Of course, even Misty's "falling short" is still miles beyond someone else's excellent. Each book should be savored for what it is, not expected to be something it's not, something I plan to work on this year. After all, although those triple-dipped malted milk balls may not be the Haagen-Dasz fudge brownie overload you were in the mood for, they're still plenty chocolatey in their own right. Old World or Dutch Chocolate, if Misty wrote it, it's most likely good stuff. Excelsior! --Jerrie M. Adkins P. S. It's obvious in _Owlflight_ that some time has elapsed since the end of the _Magewinds_ trilogy. Does anyone know how much, or what has happened to the Aurinalean Empire [what's left of it] in the meantime? Actually, I got the clear impression that Amberdrake engaged in sex with his clients on a regular basis. Just because Misty chose not to elaborate with explicit details doesn't mean it didn't happen. It's very common in fiction for sexual scenes to be hinted at instead of shown in detail. > "a kestra'chern was not a bedmate-for-hire, although plenty of people had > that impression." Also I particularly enjoyed By the Sword as it is the "connection" between separate series. I started reading Mercedes Lackey's work in Sword and Sorceress and the Darkover anthologies. Afterwards I happened to recognize her name in the bookstore and picked up Oathbound. From there I read the Arrows series and the Herald Mage series. Now I have read them all, having had to wait impatiently for each to come to print. Does anyone know if Ms Lackey will write more books set in Valdemar anytime soon? I have seen that she is publishing other unrelated books, but I really prefer these. I can't say I have a favorite book although I do have a favorite series: that would be the Winds series, followed closely by the Herald-Mage series.  Also I particularly enjoyed By the Sword as it is the "connection" between separate series.
My Thanks

Skif's changed because that's what life sent his way, and Elspeth isn't a brat. She's just disgusted because the kingdom and companions were hearding her into a role which she neither wanted, nor was well suited. (Much as I love her, she'd make about as good a queen as I would a king...we both like to act first and sort out the consequences too much). Now it seems that (you guys will hate me for this) Misty is in it more for the money- I know, I know, all writers want money. But now it seems that she's just cranking out these tiny books with little story line, and no depth. It seems to me tha SG and OF are written for the pre-teen age group >> I'd have to agree here. The non-Velgarth books of late are better than those about Velgarth. I'm eagerly awaiting another collaboration (preferably with McCaffrey, Norton, or Anthony, in descending order, they're the most readable of her collabs) to jumpstart her. In all fairness, I believe that she needs to hold off on collaborations with less experienced authors. Most other authors who are now doing this have decades of experience on her. Maybe this is why their collabs work better. I take it back Elspeth is not a brat. Thats what I like about this list, it makes you think, Yes, I did think Elspeth was a brat but now, I've been told what everyone else thinks and it makes it a whole lot easier to see Mistlys books in a diffrent light. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 05 Jan 1998 10:28:16 From: "Ailsa n'ha Winifreyda" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Kestra'chern (long) Message-ID: <3.0.2.16.19980105102816.34a774be-+AT+-bilbo.cc.flinders.edu.au> Dear Listsibs, Happy new year !! It is a wonderful 27 degrees Celsius over here in Adelaide South Australia and I'm back at work! Damn! I still haven't got my modem working so I can work from home! I returned to only 200 messages so it didn't take me tooooo much time to go through them. The issue that caught my eye most was the Kestra-chern debate. Pardon me if I wander a bit here as my thoughts are not yet ordered. The Mage gave his usual erudite and articulate view and I in many ways agree with him. The word which kept on recurring for me about the role of the kestra'chern was "wholism" or "holism" - if you will. I have been thinking a lot over the Festive season about Healing and how it comes about and who can catalyse it. I don't know why it has been so prevalent in my mind so it was serendipitous that this discussion occur. ((For those who are not aware I am a nurse-academic so nursing & healing are always somewhere in my thoughts.)) We as human beings are not separate parts as the empirico-medical model would like us to beleive - we are all interconnected being and every part affects the other. Thus when one part of our being (physical, emotional, social, psychological, spiritual etc) is injured then all parts are injured. And all parts must be healed - how - by healers - either in one person but often there is a team effort. The kestra'chern worked with the "body" healers often so that the whole body is healed. If that includes some kind of sexual therapy - so be it. So long as it is explained to the person that it is part of therapy and is consensual etc. ((NO - I don't advocate to my students that nurses meet their patients' every need - it's still bad enough that nurses are considered to be either whores, battle-axes or angels - I do however discuss the whole issue of sexuality with them - they often do not get the chance to openly discuss these issues - especially with some-one who is openly in the so called sub-culture as I am)) Why oh why do we get hung up on sex being part of the therapy ... yes rhetorical question - I understand the Christian-Judaic influence. Why does the act of making love cause so many people so many hangups. I do understand it but it peeves me something chronic. For me, it is the trust and the intimacy involved in the act that is precious but I may be considered old-fashioned and too romantic and because making love has no reproductive function for me - maybe I am biased. Enough, already .... Message-ID: <199801050150.UAA50140-+AT+-pimout1-int.prodigy.net> I just finished reading owl Flight and my boyfriend has it now. We have decided that it has not been too much time since the young main character is only 14 and his parents dissapeared while the storms continued to plauge the area. They dissapeared when he was 11 . So it has only been something line 1-3 years since the end of the mage storms. Please correct me if I or he have mis-interpreted something. Oathbound and Oathbreakers were the first Misty books I ever read and I had to re-read them once I was finished. They are what turned me towards Misty (and this list) in the first place so those are definitely my favs. I have not read anything outside of Valdemar, except the Griffon's, and steadfastly refuse to do so (I'm stubborn, what can i say). The Kestra'chern discussion has continued on for many a post, so here is my take on it: Yes they engaged in sexual healing practices, but only when the person needed it to make the spirit and body whole again. I do not believe that the Kestra'chern would do it with the person needing healing just for pleasure or desire . A little background on me, a 32 yo male in the military living in Va.(theres a suprise being that the military is the #1 source of income for the Norfolk area) with a wife who doesnt read S.F. and 2 boys that are the apple of their dads eye. i first picked up a Misty book at the age of 29 and continue to read them when I get the chance. My 1st fantasy books were the White Gold Wielder series by S. Donaldson (bought for someone else never gave the gift) while I was still in H.S. and I have loved the fantasy realm ever since. I now return to my previously lurking form.
