For a while I was agreeing with this, that her stuff was too down, and that all the men in it where villians, and that it was getting old. But then, at my new job at a bookstore, I saw a new book by her, _Exile's Song_ a Darkover book. Being able to borrow it, I went home and opened it. The next morning (About 2 am) I put it down,a nd crashed, then reread the entire thing again the next morning. I have to say, that I think her style of writing has vastly improved over the corse of time. :) Now.... OBMisty..... hm... Well. My impression of the .... Kerst'chern was that they did provide a sexual service if it was needed, because of a) the way the fighter acted, b) the way the mage acted, and c) the way Winterhart acted, when Amberdrake touched her. I don't have my books, or i'd use textev... anyone remember what I'm talking about? Where she was so stiff, he thought she'd break from tenstion? == Morgana, Lady of things unseen... While I am glad to her that you found her new works enjoyable I repeat I am not willing to spend any money to give her another chance. If my local library has a copy then I may check it out. She will be fighting an uphill battle in my case to win me back as a reader, let alone a regular reader. When I pulled "The Ruin of Issus" (sorry about the previous misspell) I had no idea of what it contained and yet as I said within a minute I found a extremely negative commentary. Had I bothered to start at the front of the book I would have found the following "Song of the Men's House of Ariane" right after the title page. It starts so - I am only a man And I have no part in Paradise These are only the first two lines of the song - I did not include the balance as they may be objectionable to some. But none the less These two lines are a perfect summation of how her works appear to me. There is another author, a male in this case who I read a couple books of and found him to be one tracked also. I cannot recall his name but he wrote the Gor series. I found in his books that women were always slaves and basically treated as lower then the lowest. It was very annoying and repetative so after reading whooping total of three books (actually 2 1/2) I gave up on him. I will continue my search for authors whom I consider worthy of my reading time. For now MZB has written herself out of the picture, at least when I have to buy the book. And actually, there are a lot of authors out there who tend to be sexist in one way or another. Piers Anthony comes to mind. In the case of MZB, it could well be that you happened to read some of the works she wrote after she found out that her ex had been accused of molesting children. I could imagine that such news would change one's view of the world. I happen to like Marion's Darkover series, and was pleasantly surprised with Exile's Song as well as Shadow Matrix. However, of the books of her's that I do not re-read, it would be the stories of the Free Amazons, for exactly the reason that I don't want to get hit over the head with attitude. For that same reason, I have never re-read Misty's Tarma & Kethy stories because they felt too much like the Free Amazons of Darkover for my liking. I know a great many people for whom those stories are their favorites of Misty's --- that's one of the wonderful things about people -- all of our interests are diverse and it makes for an interesting life. elaine/nightowl ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Jan 1998 21:30:01 -0500 (EST) From: AERDEN-+AT+-delphi.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Authors: MBZ Message-ID: <01IS85TA06J68WWA67-+AT+-delphi.com> On 10-JAN-1998 20:11:06.5 mercedes-lackey said to AERDEN me>There is another author, a male in this case who I read a couple books me>of and found him to be one tracked also. Re Bradley--What gets me is that she doesn't consider herself a male-bashing writer, and apparently she is annoyed at really radical feminists, the sort who consider men necessary only for reproduction ::roll of eyes:: I do consider MZB worth reading. I very much enjoyed _Heritage of Hastur_ and _The Planetsavers_. I also liked _Rediscovery_, the novel she wrote with Lackey. That book gave me the creeps--all this disaster brought about by the arrogance of a 16 year-old girl. She has written some good male characters--Damon Ridenow, Regis Hastur, the Terran Legate, even Dyan Ardais, though he isn't the best example of a good man. However, she does tend to make her fiction very female-oriented, and sometimes her characters are just plain annoying...(I never have been able to stand Lew Alton). I also notice that in _Tiger Burning Bright_, the only male character I came across in the first 20 pages was a corpse. Not terribly encouraging. Morgan--Does _Exile's Song_ get better? I'm at the point where we meet Rafaella--one of the best laughs of my life, finding out who she was; it was great! So far, Marjorie is sharing a genetic quality with her father--I want to slap her. (g) I got _Shadow Matrix_ for Christmas, so we'll see how that goes. :) Chantal ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 1453 **********************************
