I believe that Van's hair never gets totally bleached out because he is not always around the magical nodes the way the Tayledras are. They live with the nodes AND heartstones on a dialy basis so they get bleached out early in their lives. Even the ones who are scouts have bleached hair even though they do not work directly with the nodes, they just dye it brown or whathave you to blend in with the trees and brush. Now, Van lives in a place where the nodes ARE there but far beneath the ground and the only heartstone is the one he created himself and it was a small one.So, he uses them but does not constantly live around them. So, his hair does begin to go silver but only a bit at a time. If you notice, the more he works with them the more silver he gets. And, I think, at one point that is said in the book. After a particularly hard time he has had and had to use the nodes/heartstone much more than he usually would he notices he has even more silver in his hair. Richard Goodkind's books come to mind, in that many of his characters are ambiguous in their moral affiliations.. While I read all of ML's books over and over, and snap up new ones whenever they come out, I do have to say that (with a couple of notable exceptions, such as what's-her-name kitsune in Chrome Circle, and most recently, Tremane) that good and evil in her books are very strongly defined. Message-ID: <19980123213612.AAA28430-+AT+-pooka> Hi all, It was for the exact reason that Cennydd described with MZB that stopped Misty from allowing fan fiction in general. It was the coincidence of Marion writing one of her Darkover books and running into this person who had written something similar in a piece of fan fiction. She actually tried to negotiate with this person, and when it got nasty, a lot of the writing community learned a lesson from it. Misty did allow some on-line fan fiction that she was able to monitor herself on a private BBS --- the people involved had to write a copyright waiver request form before they were allowed to participate. Even then, they could not used established characters, but had to create their own. What her policy is now would be found out by writing to her at the Aerie. There are other authors who do allow some fan fiction. Anne McCaffrey is one, but even there, it is done in an alternate time line and with original characters. elaine/nightowl ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Jan 1998 13:38:14 PST From: "Wind Dancer" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Books and more Stuff Message-ID: <19980123213815.2693.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> Heyla, this is for Ari and anyone else who might need it... Cover art tries to encompass the whole story within the boundaries of one visual space and sometimes the artist is successful and sometimes not. Jody has done a beautiful job with the Last HeraldMage series. The covers convey a degree of emotion and humanity that is hardly found elsewhere (you can see this particularly on the covers of the first printing of this series). Since the blurbs don't summarize the storyline very well, I would think that they should be done away with altogether. I think that Misty has reached the point where her books do not need the blurbs as an advertising draw in trick, because her Name sells.
