There was that guy several months (maybe a year) ago who addressed his comments to no one in particular, but I definitely felt like he was shoving his beliefs down my throat, even though they weren't addressed to me personally. After the comments on it here I've pretty much decided to wait for the paperback. The impression I got from Storm Breaking, however, was that the shielding on the various nodes was intended to keep them from going rogue and releasing their pent-up energies in wild and damaging ways on the physical planes. The mage-storms acted on the magical plane more than the physical. It was the eruptions from within the magical plane onto the physical that created the changeling creatures and effects. Anyway, the shieldings could prevent the release of energies into the physical world, but couldn't prevent the massive restructuring of energies within the magical plane. So, due to the effects of the massive final storm, magic was distributed equally around the entire world, so that there were no ley lines, node, etc. (You've got to feel sorry for those Mage-schools that spent years and years building up "tame" pools of mage-energy, only to have it disipated by the storm.) One can presume (perhaps incorrectly) that the energies will slowly gravitate towards ley lines and nodes over the course of many years. I imagine it as being like water. Given a smooth, flat surface (like the bottom of a tub) water will tend to follow previously created paths -- in other words, if there is already a bit of water on the surface, subsequent water will follow the path of the previous. Dump a lot of water on a surface at once and the water will first spread over the entire space and then seperate into multiple rivulets and puddles (like ley lines and nodes). However, thanks in part to Chaos theory, these streams and pools will be in a different place from the ones that were there before the huge splash of water diffused the water that was already there. So, substitute "magic" for water and "ley lines and nodes" for rivulets and pools and you get the idea. Sorry for the longish post... Since you are writing fiction, presumably about a world (and by that I mean universe) completely disconected from our own, what does it matter if you write about gods or goddesses that you don't believe in? I can understand how writing fiction with corrolaries to your own beliefs would be easier (write what you know, and all that) but where is the harm in creating something completely imaginary? Creating and imagining does not imply belief, after all. What bothers me personally about the use of various religions in fantasy writing occurs when real religions are used, and the author uses such use to attack one of the other religions at its foundation; not certain members or groups of that religion but the religion itself. It shows up most often in (sorry to any Pagans who are on the list) books in which Pagan religions and Christianity are included. Christian characters are often treated as blind followers of a false truth and the Pagans featured are portrayed as condescending and pittiyng of the "blind" Christians. I don't remember ML being really guilty of this in any of her urban stuff. The worst offender I have come across (and it saddens me because otherwise I truly enjoy her work) is Gael Baudino. The message that comes across is that tolerance is a great thing, but that only pagans can be truly tolerant, all Christians are inherently bigots and the only characters who find redemption convert. To my mind, this attitude is the same held by fundamenalist Christians who believe the exact opposite. Wow, another long one... Message-ID: <34CC2D5B.73C9-+AT+-tima.com> Heyla listsibs, De-lurking for the first time, I just finished reading (for the umpteenth time) the Winds Trilogy. In Winds of Fury, hardcover, pg 240, ""It is shielded," Firesong said. "The room, I mean. It is shielded as heavily as if it were a mage's workroom, although it appears that you and I and Darkwind have been given the key to those shields. They are powerful, layered and very old; this room should be able to contain anything. As it must be, if it is to contain a hearstone and yet be in the center of a populous area. The people of Haven are clearly not prepared to live with the energies of such magics." He raised a snow-white eyebrow at her. "For that matter, I do not know what such magics would do to those who are not Tayledras. There might be problems that one would never encounter in a Vale."" Also, I remember something in MPrice (I think it was) when Vanyel changed the web he set up a small heartstone in Haven. This does not seem to have affected the populous. Re myself: I knew Misty _many_ years ago when she was still active in the SCA. I had read some of her short stories (S&S) and then found the Arrow books, LMH and the Oathbound duology all at about the same time in the early 90's. I have not seen Misty in years (other than at a Rivercon in 93) so am not claiming to be a friend. I cannot afford to buy all the hardbacks I want, but I save my money for Misty and Anne McCaffrey and an occasional Lois Bujold. I have summarys of most of her Valgarth books and want to make sure I don't have too many spoilers in them. http://prairie.lakes.com/~roseleaf/books/index.html It might be best if you emailed responses... In fact, IIRC, at the very end of the book, 'tis said that the nodes are *gone* - drained down to nothing and not-there; I think that's one reason why the Taleydras mages were rebuilding the leylines and Heartstones on Owlflight. I've been going through an *orgy* of Misty-reading for the past two weeks - all I can ask is - "When's the next one coming out?!" I'd *love* to finally read the story of how Talia became a SunPriest, and find out if Misty's going to have a cosmic reconciliation between the two deities. How possible do y'all think it is that Talia will have something to do with the reappearence of the Consort Kal'enel (sp?)?
