Generally for me to try an author someone who's reading tastes I trust has to recomend them to me. Then I read the blurb on the book that is recommended. If the blurb doesn't catch my eye, then I won't read it. I've been wanting to try Melanie Rawn, but I haven'tbeen real impressed with the blurbs, so she's gotten lower and lower on my list of reads. I know that it took an extra couple of years for me to get into Mercedes Lackey because I didn't think her blurbs were that good and it wasn't until I ran out of OSC (my favorite author) and had gone through some other author's that I didn't care for that I read Misty and got hooked. I guess I had better make my position clear - I have a strong Xian background that has influenced my life though I am no longer a practising Xian and have investigated many other religions. I am interested in the neo-pagan movement as well as the Bahai faith. Misty is eclectic IMHO in her approach to religion which can be shown in particular to Valdemar's policy about acceptance of all religions. An example of this is in Oathbound when Tarma has her Goddess link broken by the demon. Kethry appeals to the Star Eyed through the High Priest (of yet another religion) and when the Star-Eyed answers, she says something like "Am I not another face of your Windborn lady" and restores the bond. So can not all deities be different faces of the same. Which makes writing about them like writing about your own beliefs if you infuse them into your deities. Another area where she discusses it is in her Di Tregarde books - all 3 of which I read over the last long weekend - celebrating Australia Day. In Burning Water she outlines her beliefs about life - when I get home I'll put them on disk and bring to work to send out to you. I mean who else would have a neo-pagan having a vampire for a lover? It took me a while to read these books - mainly because I don't like reading really dark books - and then I found out that they weren't that dark except for Burning Water which was abit gruesome at times. I have not read a fantasy novel that does not explore the nature of good and evil - in fact Patricia Keneally discusses the necessity for evil in "The Copper Crown" when Aeron or Gwydion discuss it with Sorcha. It is the eternal struggle and, let's face it, it makes good reading! Sometimes it can be ponderous, sometimes fun but always a chord echoes somewhere in our being. Ok enough philosophising. Australia won the 2nd one-day cricket final yesterday and today is THE final - everything is crossed in anticipation. It's great that we won, but I will not truly celebrate Australia Day until we truly accept the Mabo and Wik decisions about native title. (Sorry - prosletysing (sp) but it is a hot subject in Australia at the moment and we could go to a national election based on how we treat our indigenous people) It's also enrolment day - another batch of new nursing students! I really like meeting them on this day - it fills my heart to see them so enthusiastic. When will students (and patients for that matter) ever realise that they give me more, far more than I ever give them? Whoo - long one! sorry Regards Ailsa Ailsa n'ha Winifreyda School of Nursing, Flinders University of South Australia Email:Ailsa.nhaWinifreyda-+AT+-flinders.edu.au Practise random acts of kindness and senseless beauty! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Jan 1998 21:22:44 -0500 From: Greg Wooledge To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: the end of fan fic Message-ID: <19980126212244.14443-+AT+-phoenix.local> Ceyl & John (ceyljohn-+AT+-insidenet.com) wrote: > doesn't even know. it has sent out a virus through e-mail called join = E-mail "viruses" DO NOT and CANNOT harm your computer. I'll be traveling in Italy, France, Britain, Ireland, Sweden, Germany, and possibly Switzerland or Hungary. Anyone who has any personal stories or "must-sees," please email me. Also, I will be looking for Sci-Fi/Fantasy oriented shops, particularly in England and Ireland. Does anyone know of any? I really want to find a shop which sells Filk Tapes (New & Used). Thanks, Robert Pierce PS: Does anyone know how I can locate Dragonhold, Anne McCaffrey's home? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jan 1998 07:46:27 -0600 From: "Fam. I've been wondering about "the bard's Tale' books ML wrote with three other writers. Are the books based on a computer game or is the computer game based on the books? And does anyone know something about the computer game? Did ML have anything to do with the development of the game?
