I know that a lot of you are probably going to think that is a rehash ::Looking out of the corner of his eyes to deflect any thrown objects.:: In a sense it is just a different view point. I read the Last Straw essay about two months ago, and really wanted to read the three books to see what had all those people in an uproar about them. I just finished with them and loved ever minute of it. And I got to thinking, which the doctors tell me is dangerous, why did these books not sell? At first I thought it was because that they were not believable enough. Then I thought if people can believe in telepathic white horses this was nothing. Then it came to me maybe the reason that these freaks came out in the first place and why it they did sell is because they bit a little to close to reality to be believable, if that makes any sense to anyone. Maybe the reason it was not a good selling book was because it was to real to many people instead of being fiction. At the end of the third, although knowing this going into them, was kinda of unhappy that she is not going to continue in that universe. The last book nearly screamed "SEQUEL" at the end. One must assume, from descriptions of the height of the cliff walls around the Dorisha Plains, that either Urtho's tower was built VERY deep into the ground or that the place where Urtho's tower was located was naturally much lower than the surrounding land to begin with. The above ground structure was essentially melted, while the below ground section was shielded from most of the energy by the ground itself. This is only an hypothesis. From descriptions of the house, it is a one of a kind. Apparently, some contractor thought that since he had land in "Dorothy/Wizard of Oz" area of the country, he would make a lot of money by building indestructable houses --- houses that wouldn't blow away in a tornado, that is. So he built a geodesic dome house. And then he couldn't sell it. The locals thought he was nuts, and he went out of business. An architect later came along and decided to mask this ugly contraption by building a rather large farmhouse over the dome. He then went on to build a garage in equal scale so that they would match. It stood empty for a long time. Then Misty and Larry saw it, and figured it was unique enough for them to move into. There is a lot of space in between the geo wall and the house frame, so they have a lot of space for the birds to fly about indoors. That's how it got the name The Aerie. There are a lot of interesting stories about that house. In regard to the Diana Tregarde books, apparently, before the whole thing got out of hand, Misty had been planning to write a book called Triangle Park, which was supposed to connect Diana with Tannim from the SERRAted Edge books. As Tannim is one of favorite characters, it would have been nice to see more books that included him. elaine ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Jan 1998 21:37:13 -0600 From: "Mark Severson" To: Subject: I'm back - finally! ALL HM couldn't have >been killed - could they? Couldn't Meke and co. produce another HM? I personally liked the ending... had me crying every time I read it. It gave reason for the Valdemar without magic that she had already written about in the Arrows series. Insofar as Jisa teaching others, etc... Jisa was not mage gifted, so she would not be able to "see" if others were the way a mage gifted person would. She didn't have that kind of training, so she wouldn't be able to train others in their gifts. All the Herald Mages were killed . I think there probably were a lot of Mage gifted youths that became Heralds, but when they were trained, they were trained in their other gifts instead or as though their gifts were either farsight or another communication gift And, since there was no one to recognize and no one to train them, the mage gift became known as "old magic" which didn't exist anymore. And it wasn't like someone from outside of Valdemar that was mage gifted and good intentioned could come in, become a Herald and find and teach the others. The protections Van put up around the borders prevented that. At least, that's the way I see it all!
