Also take a look at http://www.ling.udel.edu/hyde/pers/misty/newbiefest.html which is a great help for Oh, and re: LHM and Elspeth... I believe I remember it this way (personal opinion liberally sprinkled in): Elspeth was a mage trained as though her gift was just Farsight and that she couldn't actually do anything with those little tendrils of magic, so naturally she didn't try. Elspeth was special in part because she was the first Herald trained to use her power as a mage, and also she was one of the most powerful mages what's-his-face, that mage trainer person (I hate not having my books up here with me!), had seen. I'm not sure about that last part. Also Elspeth is just a Spiff Person, what with her adventurous spirit and incredible mage power, so I guess the gods thought she was most likely to go off on her own and get herself trained, so she warrented a Grove-born. I'm listening to LL&L right now. I love that tape. I love Shandeen's voice. I love Misty's songs. Especially "Cost of the Crown". Her songs are always a real hit whenever I play them at Bardic circles. Do we have any other SCAdians out there? :) (SCA == Society of Creative Anachronism, medieval recreation. Elspeth was special because it was planned that she would be the first herald to receive mage training since Vanyel's time. I haven't read any of them yet... they're a bit hard to find (though I do have a copy of CotN :-). Clare Fiander (cf-+AT+-leightons.demon.co.uk) wrote: > Who were the grove-borns in TLHM??? Elspeth was in Vanyel's time! > Magic's Pawn is set with her as queen! There's more than one Elspeth in Misty's Velgarth/Valdemar books. Yes, Elspeth the Peacemaker was a monarch during the early part of Vanyel's life. Another Elspeth (possibly named after the Peacemaker) is the daughter of the queen in the era described in the Arrows, Winds and Storms books. This later Elspeth is one of the main characters of the Winds trilogy. By the way, it is suggested that if you have more than one thing to say to this list in a brief period of time, you should combine the messages into one larger "braid" message. The List seems to be tired of the discussion. (See > the rules in the newbiefest.) Tsk, tsk, tsk. Read carefully. =) The "Done To Death Topics" section of the Newbiefest not only doesn't forbid discussion of the topics, it invites newbies to do so. After all, just because those of us who have been around for a while have seen the topic several times doesn't mean that no-one can discuss it now, or that y'all won't think of something we haven't thought of. Now, I'll admit, I tend to skim messages that are on topics that I have seen more than 3 times (which I think most of the decrepit old-timers do), but there are a lot of people on this list who have never seen the topic discussed once, let alone had a chance to contribute. So, my advice to all y'all is to knock yourselves out discussing whatever topic strikes your fancy (Although, I swear if anyone announce that they think Companion Sayvil is actually Savil the Herald-Mage, I shall whimper and curl up in a little ball *grin*). > >So, energy from the void seeps into Velgarth through the medium > >of living things, and then collects into small streams and rivers (ley > >lines) and eventually into nodes, like water will collect into the sea. Yes, this was mentioned in one of the LHM books, IIRC. It may have also been mentioned in the book where Elspeth was studying magic in the Vale. Anyway, I think that the implication at the end of the Storms books was tht the magical energy of the world had been fairly evenly distributed (no ley lines or natural nodes), but that the energy would slowly seep back into its accustomed pattern, just as water does when it floods (it covers everything at first, but gradually recedes and returns to streams and ponds). There's an Andre Norton Webring of several intriguing sites, the homepage of which is: http://www.xenite.org/webrings/anorton.htm There's an Andre Norton Messageboard; Irene Harrison, the co-author of the latest, definitive Norton bibliography is a frequent poster. In addition to the message board [not nearly as active as this mailing list, but lots of fun points are raised], there's a Witch World glossary, a chronology, and other cool stuff. One of the other sites is run by Rhe Lynn, who is initiating another project. Since the Internet Writers' Guild isn't taking any more members, there is interest in starting a Writers' Guild for new writers in the sf and/or fantasy fields.
