This is just a quick question that I hope some knowledgeable person can clear up for me... Did anyone really understand the Leareth thing? I got the impression that the conflict between Leareth and Van wasnt the real focus of MPrice. I still love the book (it has been well loved and well read) but I felt that Leareth wasnt developed enough. I can understand that Misty needed a villian, but we had little to no backround on him except for Van's dreams. Which brings me to another point...was there any sort of relationship between Leareth and Krebain? If anyone has textevd, or is just a totally super person and can explain this to me, I would be much oblidged and would have to send them many chocolate-covered things! While it is a lovely idea to have a list with the locations of everyone who wants to be identified that way, this is not the way to go about. I hope some knowledgeable person can clear up for me... I got the impression that the conflict between Leareth and Van wasnt the real focus of MPrice. I do NOT claim to be knowledgeable. A busybody, well, maybe. I agree that Leareth plays sort of a cameo role -- his evil is present, but he isn't really fleshed out. I always thought MPrice was more about Van and Stefan, and explaining the end of the Herald-Mages. And with reading the Winds series, it seemed very much like Misty threw in Leareth to set up all of Winds. (Don't get me wrong, I thought this was very clever -- if she'd spent too much time developing Leareth, there wouldn't have been room for the Falconsbane development -- considering they're both Ma'ar, it wouldn't have been much of a surprise if we'd learned about the body leapfrogging back in Vanyel's time.) *** Which brings me to another point...was there any sort of relationship between Leareth and Krebain? Sieve-head! Sieve-head! Since this is the second or third time in the past couple of days Krebain has come up, could somebody remind me where he pops up? (MPawn?) *** Did Falconsbane shape himself into a cat because of his name? IIRC, Falconsbane/Ma'ar was driven by a special hatred for gryphons (which fly, and don't have cat ancestry in Velgarth); and then for Tale'sedrin and their bondbirds. Cats have an unjust reputation for being bird-killers (hah, I'd like to see a fluffy housecat up against a firebird), so I think that was part of the reason. I know there's some passing reference, but I'm too exhausted to go find the textevd. I'd also like to add that cats are sultry and move beautifully, and the cat stuff might have also been vanity/pretense on Falconsbane's part. ****** Okay, couple of thoughts on the knot thing. First, could somebody please point me to the book and chapter where this is mentioned? I skimmed BG last night (actually, I read the whole book from Amberdrake's first-hand view only, skipping the rest). Is it in WG, or did I miss it around 1:30 last night? <> Even without textevd or even a clear recollection of the words, IIRC, my recollection is that I had been under the impression that Amberdrake's reference to knots was distinctly sexual; I believe I extrapolated that to be situations where he tied down clients with various types of knots (including knots which the restrainee could undo him/herself) for various emotional needs. And regarding the discussion as to whether Drake was shocked at dominance/submission sexual activities plus the question of whether Misty has a fixation on scary sexual experiences: In re-skimming BG last night, I was once again struck by the whole creation of the Kestra'chern. I'm fascinated by the concept of a healer for the spirit and soul, to complement the Healers of the physical. It raised many questions for me the first time I read it, and I remember being pleased to see sex treated as such a therapeutic thing, in the right hands. And in this light, domination/submission could very well be the thing to soothe the soul of a client. Last thing, I think the distinction someone made between D&S and S&M was very much to the point. Amberdrake was aghast at the sadistic nature of what's-his-name's practices. Sadism and masochism is about inflicting and/or receiving pain. I think this most likely results from traumas (tho they may be mild traumas, and people who enjoy mild S&M can be very well-adjusted). I think D&S is a bit harder to pin down. As someone (sorry, can't remember who-see sieve comments above) detailed rather well, "normal" people may find a bit of D&S a comforting change from their daily routine. To step out on a limb here, I think of D&S as a response to cultural or societal pressures. And I have some pretty strong thoughts about a society where dominance and dog-eat-dog is the prevailing mentality, but it's a bit OT, so I won't. So I can't say I think it's healthy in an idyllic world, but for the times we live in, it's pretty tame. (And yes, I count myself as one of those with a slightly submissive streak -- but only sometimes, and only in the bedroom, and only with someone I trust to the Havens and back ;o) ******** Greetings, fellow listsibs. A few years back I was (un)known around here as Tiana, the Damsel Who Causes Distress. ... young and silly! Well, well. What have we here? Such lovely manners, has this Tiana. *strolling casually into view, looking the new listsib over carefully...trying to look dignified to welcome this obviously well-bred addition...* Welcome. Glad to have you along.............*pounce,pounce,pounce* yay! Young and silly...good, good. Young and silly is very good. *Niki offers warm and fluffy sheep to Tiana, along with chocolate-chip flavored sheep cookies, sheep-flavored chocolate chip cookies, and a big, soft towel for drying off the salt-water....oh, did I say salt-water? Funny, there's no salt-water around here. Never you mind, young Tiana. Forget I mentioned salt-water. By the way, have you met Yvonne Shadowshape? *backing subtly, slowly away from semi-newbie* ******* What about us (we the people of the list) try to have an informal meeting, in person? (Shadowdancer) I would love to do something like this. I doubt it would be feasible for me, though. I'm in L.A., Cennyd is apparently in Delaware (??see sieve-brain, above), Adrienne's in Arizona, and a number of people seem to be in the UK. Sound like a daunting prospect. (Oh yeah, did I mention the starving student thing? Travel's pretty much out for me.) However, if any of you are in my timezone, or heading out this way I'd love to meet you in person, share a latte, prop our feet up on some warm, fuzzy, friendly sheep.... ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 06 Feb 1998 13:08:49 -0500 From: Stasia To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: MIST: Stop this at once! Otherwise, all the posts with >locations are just a waste of bandwidth. Any volunteers? Me! Me! Me! I had actually already thought about doing much the same thing, and even have a partial list made already. I'll be more than happy to volunteer. First, Happy Birthing Day Skywolf. Just had one myself, so I'll dedicate the last of my cake to you. And I know what you mean about the rain (Pasadena, myself). Two days in a row and I was feeling grumpy -- rain just doesn't come two days in a row; what's the world coming to?? As for the addresses, I actually started compiling them, so consider me your volunteer, O Councillor. Everybody else, if you want to email to me directly, I'll compile a list and then send it on to Cennyd when it's a decent size. IRC is a great idea; that's where I started. Never could find any Misty chats, tho. Did finally find a McCaffrey room or two, but nobody was in 'em (not even the operator -- my words went unheeded ={) Thanks for the flame warning, Kenny, I think many of us had forgotten the one-liner prohibition. Off to school; once again I've been distracted by this lovely discussion, and am running late (actually, I usually take full responsibility for my procrastination and tardiness, but today I feel like having an excuse ;o) Warm, fuzzy sheep for those in real winter, waterproof sheep for those (like me) in neverending rain, and silly, playful sheep to brighten your darker moments. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Feb 1998 18:30:50 +0000 From: Clare Fiander To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Ma'ar/falconsbane Message-ID: I KNOW I'm fixated on the topic of FB, but, I haven't read the Winds trilogy....
