If they did and I am repeating anything anyone read from me, I apologize now. Since my email from before didn't seem to get through, I am again apologizing to any I may have offended with my rambling about evil and sexual molestation. As I said, I too experienced sexual abuse and all the emotions that went with it, which is why I felt OK in writing what I wrote. I realize there are people who are probably dealing with such things themselves and they may find such a discussion uncomfortable or wrong. I don't believe, however, that that fact should keep me from writing anything like what I wrote (provided it is in the context of Misty's books). If anyone has any comments on any of this they can e-mail me off list since anything else on this subject would be unrelated to Misty. Again, those who were offended, PLEASE accept my apology. Leareth (from MPawn?) was another. Ma'ar had set up a spell? that caused anyone from his line with a mage gift to be vulnerable to being taken over by his (Ma'ar's) spirit when they used the ability of magically starting a fire. At least that was my understaning of it. Until this happened, Ma'ar's spirit would stay locked away in some kind of cosmic safehold. As soon as a relative of his direct line tried their powers, Ma'ar's spirit would come rushing in and take over, usually destroying the body's original spirit. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- I was reading AoQ (again) last night and it came to my attention that Elspeth's eyes were described as being blue : '"Oh!' said the girl, a little of about seven with chestnut hair, blue eyes, and a rather disagreeable expression...' (AoQ 64). This struck me because I always thought of her eyes as being brown. So I did some checking, making a huge mess of Misty books on the floor, and I was right : '"What's wrong, catling?" she asked seeing how like her mother Elspeth was, despite her brown hair and eyes . . ." (AF 22). Any speculation as to why Misty changed this feature? Was it so Elspeth would have more of a 'reason' for feeling plain next to everyone else? Another thing that struck me, whch always does when reading AoQ, was the scene where Isrel is explaining to Talia that she has a choice of being a Firstwife or an Underwife : '"We want to give you the choice of the life you think you're well suited for. Not the man of course," . . ."That woould be unseemly, and besides, you probably don't know any of them anyway." "Isrel!" Keldar snapped . . ., "That last remark was unseemly and not suited to a girl's ears! . . ."' This always gets me because they are informing Talia that she is to be married, technically meaning she is now a woman, but a remark like that is not right for a young GIRL to hear, implying that she is too young for such talk, unseemly though it may be. Yes, this was long. Apologies to all those who get a lot of e-mail. Have a good weekend! ARI ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Feb 1998 12:44:00 -0800 (PST) From: "K.S." Taking it ATM in high-school biology, find it interesting, and remember a discussion about dragon genetics on alt.fan.pern which was pretty kewl. Two things about this. First, would mind-gifts be a separate gene, the result of incomplete dominance (I think this is what it's called-when one gene doesn't completely mask the other trait), or an alternate form of the mage gene? Second, my opine about mage-potential is that it's the recessive form of someone who carries mage genes (Mm) and what happened to Van sort of altered that. Unusual sex things Whoever brought up the blood magic, good point! Note, though, that this wouldn't explain people like Westes (is that his name? The drape of the silk outlines a dancer's body as he drifts across the Great Hall to the dais. His calm ageless face is alight with a smile that promises delights to tempt the angels and his sea-grean eyes flash with merriment as he nods to the gathered throng. Sweeping to stand upon the dais, he tosses his long cloudy mane of Celtic silver hair to fall down his back in a torrent of glowing argent. Raising his hand, Cennydd calls on his magic to send a scintillant burst of white and emerald shimmering light into the air, accompanied by the pealing notes of a trumpet voluntary. "Ladies and Lords, Mages and Gentles all!" "May I have your attendant ear?" "I should like to start a new tradition among this company. One which will, I hope, foster and expand the feelings of warmth and friendship which have always made this gathering a place of happiness and good cheer. For some time now, this gathering has been augmented by the presence of newly-come members. They have brought fresh enthusiasm to leaven the established friendships of the older members and have enriched the list with their presence and ideas." The Mage suddenly gestures and the company can see a ring hanging in the air before him. A plain band of twined silver, gold, and platinum, it's intricate tracery is a subtle and sophisticated pattern that needs no ornamentation. "My Lords and Ladies, I present to the Company of the List this ring, which I offer and dedicate with my magic and my will to the bonds of friendship that twine around all of us. On this first day of its existence, I present it to the Lady Niki who has recently joined our company and whose grace and charm are already a delight to view. This ring is hers to wear and enjoy. At the end of the approaching week, I ask, however, that she pass this ring on to someone else on the list to spread the enchantment of friendship. And in the giving, she will receive back threefold what is given, for the enchantment on this ring is that when it is given in friendship, it will leave three rings--one of gold, one of silver, and one of platinum--on the hand of the giver." So speaking, the Mage moves to to the elegant figure of the Lady Niki and places the ring on her finger. With a wicked smile, Cennydd bows over the lady's hand and lightly raises it to his lips. "My thanks, lady, for what you have added to the list. May you enjoy the ring and give it in friendship." Shantaya said: >BTW Did anybody notice that Misty's villains all enjoy sadistic sexual >practics? That they find torturing people in connection with sex exciting? >How do you explain that fact? And then a lot of other people joined in the band wagon. Let me point out right now a major thing you are all missing. Misty's villains are practising NON-CONSENSUAL sex and violence. Trust me, this is a big issue. In today's BDSM community (Bondage/Dominance, Dominance/submission, Sado-Masochism) non-consensual *anything* is a *major* no-no. In a consensual setting, the bottom is giving absolute trust to their top, and the top is assuming full responsibility for their bottom. In a consensual setting, pain is a sensation, a pleasing stimulus. In a consensual setting, safety words are agreed upon before engaging in any "scening" or activity. A common example is "Yellow" for "caution, go slow, I'm getting uneasy" and "Red" for "stop right now". Safety words are *always* obeyed. Masters/Mistresses/Doms/Dommes who go around ignoring safety words get put on a sort of "blacklist" and lose respect. How can you trust somebody if they don't really care for your well-being? Niki said: >Well, I think somebody (oh, gee, I feel very sieve-like right now -- who >was it?) addressed one aspect of this: As part of having absolute >control over another, and creating absolute torture and humiliation, >nothing compares to terrorizing someone sexually. Okay, I'd like to point something out here. Misty's villains have "absolute control" over their victims whereas consentual tops have "absolute responsibility" for their bottoms. Think about it. So please, when you get disgusted with Misty's villains for doing "that sort of nasty perverted thing" remember that the only nasty thing about what they're doing is not asking for permission. Of course, for these villains, I wouldn't be surprised if they're getting a big thrill from being able to override their victims' wills. Yes, of course, there is also the whole deal of sex magic. Yes, sex releases a lot of energy (Why do you think there are books half-jokingly about the amounts of calories burned by various sexual acts?), which can theoretically be tapped by magic. Now, why assume this is bad? There are always two sides to every coin. Remember the whole May Day celebration and how it is all a big sexual analogy? The energy is *supposed* to be channeled into the earth to insure a good harvest et al, whereas Fay was trying to steal it and place it in her own stores. The ceremony itself wasn't evil, it was what it was being used for and how it was implemented that mattered. I'm not saying that the end justifies the means, at all. Fay's use of a spell to increase tempers and get the violence up was definately not something intended for in the original pagan rituals. This does bring me to an interesting point, though. Basically, whether or not Fay's sex practices were consentual or not. If the boy-toys she used would have done all she asked of them without glamours or spells, then yes. However, even if she hadn't used any magic at all, she still had the type of personality to persuade them to do things they wouldn't do under her influence, which would be just the same as ensorcerelling them. Iirc, Deke was pretty embarassed by the things she asked of him when he looked at it away from her influence, so I'd say it prolly wouldn't be consentual with him if he were truly able to decide. (Back to Shantaya) >I think Misty herself might have had a very bad experience with one such >person in her younger years and she uses her stories to overcome whatever >scars that left. THis leads to the question: does she see herself as one or >more of her characters? That's an interesting question. Remember again, though, that people who have been abused were, by definition, taken advantage of against their will. I can understand how an experience like that could make someone bitter and not want to see these activities in a good light at all. I could understand if she were using the writing as a way to work it out, whether it happened to her or to someone close to her. Imesho, working it out completely would include eventually (and I know this is asking a lot) coming to terms with the possibility that these practices can be a beautiful thing *with consent given* for those who enjoy it. Which reminds me. I'm not saying this is for everybody. Some people dig it, others don't. Just because you don't, please don't go knocking people who do. There are quite a few subs on this list, and I know of at least one Domme, as well, and all these people are very "normal" (or as normal as anybody can be). Don't associate somebody's sexual practices with who they are. Okay, now I'll get off my soapbox before I get even more carried away. Just consider my yearly lecture on tolerance given. *smirk* Oh, and I'd like to applaud Amber and Greg for sticking up for this side, too. *clap clap clap* ()^*%^&%^*)^)(& Genetics Okay, Yvonne Shadowshape said: > Um.. If you'd like a more detailed explanation, look for my original post in the archives, because I was careful to give lots of examples for people who haven't taken courses specifically in Genetics. I said that I feel the mage potential was governed by polygenic continuous variation. What this means is that there is more than one gene controlling this trait, and that each bit adds up. I'll make up an example with Frugian Blastules. The height of the Frugian Blastule is controlled by two sets of genes with codes for 1 foot, 2 feet, and 3 feet, or s, m, and l respectively (keeping it simple). Now then, if a plant gets the codes ss and ss, it will be 4 feet tall, and if it gets ll and ll, it will be 12 feet tall. It can also, depending on it's parents codes, get any height in between these two extremes, with a much higher possibility of things in the middle, looking sorta like a Bell curve, only not smooth. This is actually how the gene for the darkness of skin works (though it's governed by more than two genes), which is why two dark parents can possibly (depending on their parents) have a child who is lighter than they are (or vice versa). The rest of what I had to say dealt with hormones mostly. And the reason I know about hormone blockages is because I had a male friend who was under 4 feet tall by 7th grade, and the doctors discovered his growth hormone was blocked, and were giving him shots to either erase the blockage or to replace the hormone (I can't remember quite that well). Also, hormones might not be released due to certain conditions during puberty, like malnutrition or a sever disease. I must admit, however, that my explanations do nothing to explain cases where children display their gift when they're *very* young, around 6 or so as opposed to waiting until puberty (when it was expected in Velgarth). Jisa comes to mind (tho it was her mind gifts, not mage). I'm very interested to see what people can do to explain these cases. Izzy said: >First, would mind-gifts be a separate >gene, the result of incomplete dominance (I think this is what it's >called-when one gene doesn't completely mask the other trait), or an >alternate form of the mage gene? That's a good question. You see, for the mage gift, you either have it, or you don't. For the mind gifts, there are a wide variety of gifts you could have, and some would be potential while others would open, etc, etc. It's possible that the potential for each gift is governed by a different set of genes, which is insanely complicated, but does make slightly more sense. Hmmm... this brings me to another point. Nobody has discussed just how the strength of the gift is related genetically. Going by how Van's channels were blasted to their widest extent, it would be safe to assume strength is directly related to size of the passages (tho control is a matter of will). So would the potential determine the size of these passages? Would the passages themselves be blocked off until the hormone to unblock them is or isn't released? >Second, my opine about mage-potential is >that it's the recessive form of someone who carries mage genes (Mm) and >what happened to Van sort of altered that. That really doesn't make sense, because you're saying in order for him to display the gifts, his DNA would have to be changed (in every single cell of his body) to (MM), which is, frankly, ridiculous. That's why Ele and I feel the actually expression of the gift is in a physical *as well as* genetic form so that it can be triggered by an outside (or environmental) effect. Ok, that's about all I can say right now, and I know this is a long post, but goshdernit, the *whole* thing is somehow Misty related. (Easy to do at work.) Now this is nothing Misty mentions, and is strictly my own opinion, but I think perhaps the inference could be made from the information we now have about Companions. Here goes: Do you think that a Companion is born knowing who their Chosen will be? I mean, since we all know where the Companions come from, would it be their "mission" so to speak in becoming one, that they are to Choose a particular person? I'm only 100 or so pages into MPawn, but IIRC, wasn't Yfandes on the older side for an unbonded Companion? This alone would make me wonder, but we also must remember that Gwena was specially Grove-Born for Elspeth as well. Many people(it seems to me) have been wondering about how there can be more than one Companion to a herald. I don't have the current text, but the bond of MOC is not necessarily(spelling must be way off) a true or strong bonding. In MPrice or MPawn it is stated, IIRC, that Jisa will not have a strong bonding with her Companion until after she has bonded with MOC. I hope I am being clear, although I am probably not. Aldric BTW, I am from Columbus, OH ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 06 Feb 1998 19:55:27 -0500 From: Shadowdancer To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Names, and places of Origin Message-ID: <199802070053.TAA06939-+AT+-piedmont.net> To Cennydd, Sorry I didn't mean to stir up so much trouble with the meeting thing. Please send them to me at smartin-+AT+-ultiweb.com, and I will post them on a web page, sometime soon (I hope)!!!!! ObMisty: This genetics discussion is interesting. I wanted to own every single Misty book, so I've got them all written down, with copyright dates, and a place to mark off if I own it or still need to buy it. (What, me compulsive? Nah.) Here goes: 1987 Arrows of the Queen (First printing March, 1987) 1987 Arrow's Flight (First Printing um.. I was reading it the other day. Must be in my car) 1988 Arrow's Fall (FP Jan, 1988) 1988 The Oathbound (FP 7/88) -MY FIRST MISTY =) 1989 Oathbreakers (fp 1/89) 1989 Magic's Pawn (fp 6/89) 1990 Magic's Promise (fp 1/90) 1990 Pagic's Price (fp 7/90) 1992 Winds of Fate (First Paperback Printing 7/92) 1993 Winds of Change (First Paperback Printing 8/93) 1993 Winds of Fury (First Paperback Printing 8/94) (Now it gets tricky...) 1994 The Black Gryphon (FPP: 1/95) 1994 Storm Warning (FFP: 9/95) 1995 The White Griffon (FFP: 3/96) ???? Storm Rising (FFP: 10/96) (My edition says Copyright, but no date!!!) 1996 Storm Breaking (FFP 10/97) Please note that I don't have the dates for By The Sword --I lost it :o{-- or White Griffon or the newest stuff. Also, note that once we got into the Winds, the first printing date only referred to paperback; before that, it just sed "First Printing" In addition, there are Tarma & Kethry tales in just about every Marion Zimmer Bradley Sword and Sorceress book I own: book I (I don't own -- don't think there's one here, tho) book II - No Misty book III - c.r. 1986, "Sword Sworn" book IV - c.r. 1987 "A Tale of Heroes" book V - sorry, don't own book VI - c.r. 1990 "The Making of a Legend" book VII - c.r. 1990 "The Talisman" books VII to IX - I don't own. Sorry book X - c.r. 1993 "Friendly Fire" books XII to present - I don't own. I highly recommend Bardic Voices book one (Was it Bardic Choices: The Lark & The Wren?). book two's pretty good, two, but I fell in love with the first book. (Hey, magic and music combined? I'm a sucker.) ****** Very quickly: While I was replying to our venerable Councillor's request for volunteers, Amber was posting her response. Since she's already begun, I'll gracefully step aside. And for anyone who has emailed me or does email me with an address, never fear; I'll forward it to her. (And anyone who dares imply that either Amber or I have too much time on our hands, and therefore haven't any lives, or else are just a bit too compulsive about listmaking...well, um, oh, gee. I can't speak for Amber, but...) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 06 Feb 1998 17:31:36 PST From: "Marie Jordan" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: An Idea?
