If anybody wants copyright and publishing dates (paperbacks only) for the rest of her stuff, I've probably got that too. :) ****** Ok, on to the meat of this posting: Niki waits in the Halls of Mist with her listsibs, excited and eager. She has been here for a couple of weeks now, but this is her first official gathering here in the Halls of Mist. All of her listsibs are here. She sees a few people she recognizes. She doesn’t approach them, though; she is still prone to shyness in large groups of people. “Would they recognize me? I know they would welcome me, but I’m just settling in. I don’t quite feel like I belong. I’m sure I’m being silly.” She looks around, marveling at the grace of the Halls; a combination of power and grace. Such a lovely place. Lots of candles, which throw lots of shadows. There seem to be an excessive amount of shadows, actually. * Niki peers into the shadows, trying to discern shapes. * “That’s funny. I have a distinct feeling there are people lurking there.” Their presence, however, feels not menacing but friendly. The shadows are quickly forgotten as the Mage of Green Silences enters into the room. He practically drifts across the floor. His head is held high; he knows all eyes are on him. How beautiful, how graceful is this Mage. Niki’s mind wanders…”Green silences. What the heck is a green silence?” She imagines it must be beautiful, perhaps the color of this mage’s eyes…. Niki has heard many things about this mage. He is said to be intelligent, powerful. It is also said that he does not suffer fools lightly. She overheard her neighbors saying that he could teleport himself, and that he has a fondness for balefire. * Niki makes a mental note to avoid angering this mage. * Yet for all this, he has a look of kindness about him. She thinks back to when she first arrived. He was very friendly, complimenting her and welcoming her to the group. She is sure he does not remember her, but that is alright. After all, he is a Councillor, and everyone knows his time is consumed by his attempts to achieve mastery over a powerful entity named DisSertation. She is unsure what this is, but she has heard that many unwary scholars have met their deaths in attempting such magic; this Cennyd must surely be a powerful adept. No, he surely won’t remember her. After all, he probably greets all newcomers with a few kind words. “What…wait…he’s looking straight at me…he’s smiling! There must be somebody behind me. Could he possibly remember me?” *Niki sneaks a peek over her shoulder * “Hmm. Nobody there…aha! There’s a mirror behind me. Well, that explains the smile.” Yes, she had also heard that this Mage was a bit vain. Well, he deserved to indulge a bit; he was so strikingly beautiful. Especially that hair; so silky, almost glowing. “Wonder if he uses salt water. I’ve heard it’s good for the hair.“ A trumpet peals; a hush falls over the gathering. As the Mage begins to speak, a glow appears in the air before him. There is an audible gasp in the room. Though there have been rumors of the Mage’s abilities, many of the assembled are new to the realm, and have never seen the Mage wield his powers. “…which I offer and dedicate with my magic and my will to the bonds of friendship that twine around all of us….” Why, what a lovely idea. Between the velvety tones of his voice and the generosity of his words, she is so lost in thought that she almost misses the next words “…I present it to the Lady Niki….” She is so stunned, she simply stands there as the Mage glides over and places the ring on finger. Immediately she feels a glowing warmth travel the length of her arm and through her body, settling in her heart. Through the ring she can feel the friendship and goodwill of the group. It’s like a living, breathing thing keeping her company. “Th-thank you,” she stammers, all hope of uttering a coherent sentence shattered as the Mage’s lips brush her hand. The people drift slowly away, nodding in approval, shaking hands and hugging whoever happens to be nearby. Friendship, indeed. This is a gift that will live on, gaining in power and tying us together in friendship. Perhaps songs will be written about this Mage. Niki’s eyes *glow* as she looks down at the ring. She will enjoy the coming week with a heightened awareness of the friendship of her listsibs. She vows to pour her own love & friendship into the ring, so that when she passes it on, it will carry a piece of her goodwill with it to the next person, and the next, and the next. Now that the crowd has thinned, she is able to speak to the Mage. "Thank you, sir, for creating this ring, and for bestowing upon me as the first in a chain that will strengthen with every link. I will treasure it and the gift it gives long after it has been passed on. I...I have to run. Bye." “Yes,” she thinks as she runs off, leaving the bemused Mage facing an empty space -- and the mirror.. “I think I’m going to like it here. Good conversation, lively minds. Such lovely people. I’ll probably even get used to the distinct smell of wet sheep that hangs in the air during the rainy season.” ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 06 Feb 1998 22:35:55 From: dprono-+AT+-planet.eon.net To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Big Braid of Fluff, Genetics, Companions, and more Fluff! Abalone earrings and braclet (a gift from a close fried, whom she sends a little 'Hello!' out to) start to glow softly with a gentle blue-green light, and Yvonne begins to chant softly, deftly weaving a web of enchantment to gently cover her fellow list-sib's eyes from her faux-pas. The fleeting, dark being looks on, taking in the colors and faces bathed in light, so far away, examining each feature astutely.... Listsibs, they are not, nor likely ever will be to this shy creature. Plus the new ones (Owlflight, and I think another > one.) "Elvenblood" and "Elvenbane" are set in the same world. I forget which one comes first. They're collaborations with Andre Norton. They are not related to the SERRAted Edge series. "Rediscovery" is a Darkover novel, written with Marion Zimmer Bradley. MZB's Darkover series/world has a couple dozen books now, including collections of Darkover stories by various authors. Misty has at least one story in at least one of the Darkover story collections (sorry, I don't know which one). Misty also appears in MZB's "Sword and Sorceress" series, many times, with stories about Tarma & Kethry. "Tiger Burning Brightly" is a collaboration between Misty, MZB and Norton. "If I Pay Thee Not in Gold" is a collaboration between Misty and Piers Anthony. These are both standalone novels. "Firebird" and "The Fire Rose" are standalone Misty novels. The Diana Tregarde series is "Burning Water", "Children of the Night" and "Jinx High". I don't have the names of The SERRAted Edge books handy. Most/all of these are collaborations. The "Bardic Voices"(?) series is "The Lark and the Wren", "The Robin and the Kestrel", "The Eagle and the Nightingales", and apparently "Four and Twenty Blackbirds"(?). I haven't seen the last yet. The "Bedlam Bards"(?) series is "The Knight of Ghosts and Shadows"(?) and "Summoned to Tourney". These may be collaborations. You are correct about the Bard's Tale books. Some/all of them may be collaborations, I can't recall. I haven't read the Wing Commander book(s). Misty co-wrote "The Ship Who Searched", the third book in one of Anne McCaffrey's series. (The first book is "The Ship Who Sang", and the second is "Partnership". There are more after Searched, but I don't have a full list. I don't think Misty did any more.) I think all the books after Sang are collaborations, and the most recent books may even have been written without McCaffrey(?). There are at least two collections based on Misty's work: "Sword of Ice", and "Lammas Night". The former is a set of stories about Valdemar/Velgarth, and the latter is a set of "variations on a theme"; they are short stories loosely based on a song that Misty wrote. Each book contains one short story by Misty herself, I believe, and the remainder of the stories are by various authors. My copy of "Sword of Ice" lists a book called "The Black Swan" as forthcoming (along with "Owlflight", which is already out). I have no further information about this book. -- "Daddy, why do those people have to | Greg Wooledge use Microsoft Windows?" | wooledge-+AT+-kellnet.com "Don't stare, son; it's not polite." | http://www.kellnet.com/wooledge/ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 07 Feb 1998 11:39:19 -0700 From: Adrienne Metz To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: S&S Message-ID: <3.0.1.32.19980207113919.006b94f0-+AT+-pop.u.arizona.edu> >>>In addition, there are Tarma & Kethry tales in just about every Marion >Zimmer Bradley Sword and Sorceress book I own: > >book I (I don't own -- don't think there's one here, tho) >book II - No Misty >book III - c.r. 1986, "Sword Sworn" >book IV - c.r. 1987 "A Tale of Heroes" >book V - sorry, don't own >book VI - c.r. 1990 "The Making of a Legend" >book VII - c.r. 1990 "The Talisman" >books VII to IX - I don't own. Thanks for the Velgarth list, Niki. I'm not quite ready to jump into the other worlds of Misty just yet. In my original posting, I mentioned that I didn't have info on By the Sword, Silver Gryphon or "the newest ones." A couple of postings later, I changed that to Owlflight. (And I didn't list these because I don't have them - I lost BTS, and haven't purchased the other two -- I did ask that if anybody out there had the info, they please post it.) And lastly, I only listed Velgarth books, because our lovely listsib in Arizona didn't want any others - she's a bit busy right now with school. ** Yikes. Do I sound grumpy? *sheepish smile* Sorry. Just woke up, realized I overslept, and now I'm late. Hmmm, regarding the above question, Yfandes was not Grove Born. Also, at the time of Storm Breaking, she was a ghost. The only two grove born Companions around during the Storm Breaking time period are Rolan, Talia's Companion, and Gwena, Elspeth's Companion. The only Grove Born Companion during Vanyel's time period is the King's Own's Companion. I don't seem to remember Florian saying that he won't bow down to Yfandes even if she is Grove Born. I think he said something along the lines of every time he sees her, he get an urge to bow down and hit his head against the floor or something along those lines. I'm sorry I can't be more specific. I am at school and don't have my beloved books with me. :-( Hope some of what I wrote helped. ---Marie ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 07 Feb 1998 13:34:41 -0700 From: Susan Read To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Sorry.sorry:two in a row:sorry Message-ID: <34DCC561.34075FB7-+AT+-connect.ab.ca> Marie Bao wrote: > Clare Fiander wrote: > > > You know I was asking about the Grove-borns a few weeks ago?
