It also seems to be similar the Chinese concept of 'chi', with the energyflow being routed along certain meridians of the body (these flows are what are affected by the use of acupuncture and acupressure, I think Does anybody know for sure about this, please?). This all puts me very much in mind of what Master Yoda said - 'Luminous beings are we...not this crude matter!'. What if (and I know I'm stepping out on a shaky limb here) the 'channels' are primarily structures in our personal energyfields? Not our auras per se, but the invisible bright lattice that binds our atoms together? According to quantum mechanics (IIRC), we are walking, talking pillars of probability, because the math that describes the structure of our starstuff atoms can only talk about where the energy packets that make up our physical structure *might* be at any given instant. Whoa...neat stuff, huh? Lessee...where was I...oh yeah... Does it seem to y'all as if the different channels Misty talks about with regards to mindmagic and realmagic sound like the different colors of a rainbow, each capable of carrying a different 'frequency' of magic? Maybe the genetics of magic influence which colors of magic you can see and use? Here's another question - what is the purpose of the focus stones mentioned in LHM? IIRC, Van and Sayvil talk, at one point, about their focus stones and how they each use something different. Now, I don't remember reading anything about Ma'ar or Urtho using focus stones, and Hulda and Kethry seem to be able to function quite adequately as Adepts without them. So... where do the focus stones come in? The other two are "A Dirge for Sabis"(Cherryh/Leslie Fish), and "Wizard Spawn"(Cherryh/Nancy Asire). I think there is a 3 in 1 edition available, called "Sword of Knowledge". Skywolf smiled hugely, her golden burnished wolf's eyes glowing in the simi darkness. As the crowd flowed out to where the meal was laid out, Skywolf trailed a bit along with a few others. From a distant vantage point, a Lady smiles quietly. Perhaps > the mage she saw earlier... > As she passes through the doors, the young minstrel almost runs into a petite figure, dressed in silvery white, with waist-long black hair, and the strangest expression in her eyes. For some reason, the minstrel finds she cannot look directly into this person's face.... "You were wishing to provide music for the feast?" the woman in silver asks. "Looking for someone in charge, perhaps?" She tilts her head back, giving the minstrel the benefit of that strange gaze. The minstrel abruptly becomes aware of music - horns, flutes and strings, playing for people to dance. The only catch is that no musicians, minstrels or bards are anywhere in sight. The minstrel gulps. "Um. Yes, if you please." The woman smiles. "I know just the room." She turns gracefully, gesturing to the minstrel to accompany her. From across the room, the Mage of Green Silences catches sight of the newcomer and smiles. The woman in silver bestows upon him an elegant curtsey, and a fond smile. At his exaggerated bow, she laughs. "Ah, the Mage of Green Silences is holding court again." She makes a tiny gesture, and the music swells into a glorious fanfare, in honor of the Great Mage's generosity. The two of them, minstrel and mysterious lady, thread their way through the dancers. The minstrel notices that one of the bubbles passes *through* her mysterious benefactor, and shivers slightly. "In here, if you please, my lady." The woman in silver turns, holding the door open. This is a smaller hall, but no less elegant than the main one. The walls are hung with pearl colored silk, the windows are about fourteen feet high, and reflect the glow of the setting sun. A feast is laid out on a table that encompasses the entire length of the room, and myriads of people are chatting, laughing and eating. The minstrel's eyes grow large as she is escorted to a plush chair, set on a raised platform to one side of the fire. The woman in silver surveys the chattering people, and raises a small hand in an instinctive gesture of command. At once, a young page, dressed in silver approaches. "M- my lady?" "Please attend this minstrel for the evening," the woman in silver says. "Let him know if there is anything you require, my lady minstrel. Then, when the evening is over, I may have some work for you." The minstrel finds her eyes held by that strange gaze yet again, and bows deeply. When she raises her head, the woman is gone. The page is trembling slightly, but manages a quick smile. "Who *was* that?" the minstrel asks. "The Lady Sophia," the page answers, a catch in his voice. What you're dealing with here is intellectual property. Of course you can't copywrite heralds, but it is certainly possible to copywrite Heralds (or Healers or Kestra'chern, or Talyedras, etc.) In order to avoid violations, there has to be a distinct difference between your herald and ML's Herald. In this case it is completly reasonable to copywrite all "people who wear white and have mind-gifts and ride wthie talking spirit-horses" because that is the essential description of a Herald. As to the clan names being copywrited, of course you can't protect every clan name that begins with 'k'. However, you CAN copywrite the characteristics and quirks that make Taleydras clans what they are. A good rule of thumb here is - If it looks like a Companion and talks like a Companion, it's probably a Companion - and therefore a no-no. Rainbow, Don't take this the wrong way, but the Mage of Green Silences is not part of this story line (beyond my unintentional starting post--at least, it was not intended to start a storyline). One thing that is simple common courtesy, however, is that you do not write someone else's character's actions or dialog into a storyline without asking them first. That being said, the Mage will not generally be taking part in any shared-world role-playing, since I (Ken) am starting my classes tomorrow and will probably not have much time to take on extra writing projects beyond what I normally do here and on the other lists that I contribute to. In general, I have no objections to people writing their reactions to my post (although it was not really intended to be the seeds of a storyline, but rather to start a new thread). I merely ask that no-one write actions or dialog for the Mage or any of my personae without first clearing it with me. I will do my best to honor everyone here with the same courtesy and apologize for any inadvertent failure to do so. Just a final note: please remember that the misty list is not velgarth and that something like half the personae on this list are mages, so the line about magic having died out years ago is clearly not true. There is rather an abundance of magic and mages of various flavors in the Halls of Mist and environs, not to mention the multitude of Gods, Goddesses, Demons, and other spritely beings. Stupid question 3: Companions don't seem to be interested in strength of gift either, just presence. Do the Companions look for the "switch" to be in the right position and then evaluate the potential suitability of the person? Sigh, enough for one day on that subject. **************************************************************************** I think the Companions do know, if not who exactly, at least a particular type of person that they will choose. I think the Companions have specific traits (empathy, levelheadedness, etc.) which their Chosen are either lacking or will need in abundance, and thus they know what sort of person will "need" them and do not choose a perhaps equally suitable candidate with the wrong potential need. Some random thoughts on choosing: The Companions don't just hang around the Collegium waiting for potential Heralds to show up and be chosen (although it seems some do, since sometimes people come and get chosen.) If there is no one suitable to choose, do some Companions get reincarnated, and then spend their whole lives unbonded? What happens if the Companion finds someone with a Gift or two, do their "measuring-up" thing, and find the person is not Herald material. Do they block off the gift? I thought that I would stick my two cents in, but I will apologise first to all the genetics people if I get something wrong; my genetics learning was a while ago. Q2: I thought that Bards were chosen according to their gifts, and they had to have 2 out of 3.Stefen had all 3, composition, talent (ability to play in other words) and the Bardic Gift, but only the later is a true gift as we view mind-magic, and if you have the first 2 then I don't think that you need Bardic Gift. Q3: Companions all chose the same sort of people, those who are level headed, have committed no crime and who are patient and self-sacrificing (well that is the impression that I get). Anyway, they enhance any mind gifts that their chosen have. Sometimes the Companions do have special gifts if their Chosen require them. Look at Tashir; his Companion was a Mindhealer. I also think that the Companion numbers and when they choose reflects on the need. It is mentioned somewhere that the numbers of Chosen increased right before the Tedrel Wars. After all, Companions appear to live a lot longer that horses, which makes sense if you think about it. I also don't think that a Companion would block someone's gifts. They wouldn't chose someone unsuitable in the first place, and if they went 'bad' they would repudiate them. That is it for me. I am looking forward to the next exciting installment, but I agree, we should not overstep any of Misty's bounds. What we are doing about the friendship ring IS role-playing. However, it is *not* Misty based roleplaying. What is definitely a no-no, is using Misty's worlds or Misty's characters for RPing. As an example, Cennydd's Mage of Green Silences is his own persona, and his own creation. Misty does not have the monopoly of mages or healers, or.....However if you are not part of Queen's Own, and you use, say, a Tayledras, or a Herald of Valdemar, you might get in trouble. >and also what were 'the mage >wars' that got thrown off that Cenndyn is talking about? Well, I am not part of the Mage Wars, but I just pasted the bit below from the Newbie Fest, this hopefully useful collaboration started more than a year ago by Deniz Sarikaya, and then edited by Cennydd and myself, and currently residing on Ken's website. Seriously, it is frequently updated to answer most newbie questions, and I'd strongly encourage those of you who have not yet read it to read it ASAP. =) It tends to save time and bandwidth =) from the NewbieFest at: http://www.ling.udel.edu/hyde/pers/misty/newbiefest.html >>>>List Member Organizations Mishi said: <].>> So, there you have someone to ask for more info. >Sorry I didn't braid, but I never seem to get any answers from my >braids...*goes off to talk to her birds sadly kicking a stone* Well, Rainbow, most of us take some time to reply to messages. And braiding is only something to do if you want to reply to more than one separate msg in any case. It starts from the door way and heads her way. She turns to see what is going on. Soft clicks sound off the floor and the walls, and Lurker, a great black wolf, with liquid yellow eyes approches. Seeing the wolf, the young wolfling scrambles to be noticed by him. Lurker comes to a stop and signals to Shadowdancer, a young, plain woman with brown hair, hazel eyes, and a deadly look about her (that is part of the outside shell that she shows all people that don't really know her). "What is it boy?, she asks the wolf. He turns as if to be followed. 'If you gentle people will excuse me, I think that my firend has senced a soul in trouble.' With that Shadowdancer stands and starts to leave the hall with her farily new found friend. The wolfling makes to follow, but Lurker lightly growls, turns the pup over and pins him down with a front paw as if to say, 'This is not for you yet, I will let you hunt with me another time.' With a sigh and a lick to the pups nose, Lurker lets the pup up and leads Shadowdancer from the room. The images of a strange woman out in the freezing rain and cold biting wind decends upon the mind of Shadowdancer from the wolf. She can tell that the woman is lost and hungry. "Let me get my cape and I will join you in a moment.' Shadowdancer runs down the hall and up the several flights of stairs to her tower room. She grabs her cape, a blanket, some brandy, and heads back down the stairs. Out into the night Shadowdancer rides, on her favorite black stallion, following close behind Lurker. Suddenly he stops and turns towards a rock, drops to his belly and crawls in. Shadowdancer stops her horse, dismounts and follows the wolf, under the overhanging rock. Huddled next to the rock is a cold wet young woman, who seems to have fallen asleep. Lurker looks to his Lady, then curls up next to the young woman. "Well I guess that has us decided then doesn't it? Shadowdancer walks back to the stallion, unsadles him, and pickets him a short distance away. Retrieves the blanket, and brandy, checking to make sure that the young bard, by the looks of her, hasn't got a fever. Happy to find that she dosen't, Shadowdancer covers her with the blanket, curls up on the other side of the woman, and waits for the coming dawn. ******************************************************* Sorry for the long post, but it just seems to be snowballing. I am really having fun with this. Suddenly he stops and lifts his head. Faintly, far off in the distance he hears a sound. Then a door is opened down below allowing a strand of music to race up the stairs where it finds an appreciative audience of one. He puts down his quill pen and sits back enjoying the music. The door is closed and the music stops. Unwilling to let the experience end he leaves his work and goes out the door and down the stairs to a side door of the Hall. Quietly he opens the door steps through and to the side to allow him to see what the curtain hiding the door obscured. For a short time he stands there quietly, surveying the wonders and basking in the music which washes over him like waves on the beach. He watches and smiles as the Mage of Green Silence presents the Friendship Ring Lady Niki. After a short time he steps back into the passageway and closes the door. Back up the stairs he goes, back to the desk but now he no longer mutters, a smile is on his face as he hums bits of the music he heard below. Such is my poor attempt to add a small section to this very interesting and enjoyable shoreline. I thank all of you who have written and those of you who will. Reading the latest posting has been something I have looked forward to at the end of each day. Take care all. Time for this here tax zombie to get back to work, but I WILL be smiling.
