Message-ID: <607d7352.34e11dea-+AT+-aol.com> ((Bout time I entered this, I guess.)) Seashimmer entered the hall, or rather palace, since it seemed to contain more rooms than she'd ever seen, even in House Sovyn. There were also more people here than she'd ever seen before. Wondering where she was, she began weaving though the crowd, looking for something. At last her search payed off, as she approached the refreshment stand. She poured herself a glass of wine, admiring the color, and selected a truffle from the plate- chocolate, of course. A small bite proved that it was flavored with mint. She wandered off again, following the sound of music, until she found the dance floor. She choose a chair, shaded with potted plants, and sat down to watch the dancing and ponder how she had come here. ^*^Claire A member of the PWRTWABSSFTHA, and Seashimmer Cowrie, visiting from Elanthia ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Feb 1998 23:12:27 -0500 From: "John E Morris" To: Subject: Re: BRAID: CHOOSING + GENETICS Message-ID: <01bd36a3$439d66c0$72109cd1-+AT+-default> >Q3: Companions all chose the same sort of people, those who are level headed, have committed no crime and who are patient and self-sacrificing ( Hey hey, Committed no crime? Well, I love the story idea, and I have all the ones that have been posted... I think... I almost never delete mail... I love the rollplaying idea ( one of the paltry few who have been interested but never done it) , but I am not sure whether it should be rollplaying in Velgarth. Seems like something the almighty lawers of MIST might not approve of. MY humble opinion is to keep this confined to the halls of MIST which contains a sort of portal that one can look through but not go through to Velgarth. BIG QUESTION-> Can anyone let me know what the spinoffs of this list are? Someone (a councellor, i think) mentioned them and they sound very interesting. Please, please, please let me know!!! I love fluff!!! (e-mail me privately if you need to) dancer_of_wind-+AT+-hotmail.com Here I go, adding my part to the next segment of the story... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The small fairy wakes up from her peaceful doze, sending her sheep to frolic in the garden nearby. She walks into the crowd, usually unnoticed because of her size (she stands chest-tall to most normal sized people), and makes her way over to the food table. She dodges many wolves and other animals trying to get to the meat, and she reaches up for a piece of steak for a hungry-looking wolf who cannot reach the table. The wolf grabs it and looks grateful as she smilingly shoos it away. She reaches for the blocks of chocolate laid out on the table, and takes it in her hand (of course it doesnt melt...this is the Hall of Mist after all!!! ). She closes her eyes and the silver spirals on her gown begin to shimmer. The block of Chocolate is transformed into a delicately formed rose (fully edible, of course). She offers this as her own gift to all who are in the room, various Lords and Ladys, Goddesses of Music , Minstrels, Gracious Councellors, Patrons of Fluff, Warriors, Trolls, Mages, Healers, Wolves, Bondanimals, even the Lurkers in the shadows (those who are anonymous and known). (If I forgot anyone, please feel free to hit me over the head with a 2x4 ). After this display of subtle magic she sits down to munch on her Sushi to replentish her energy. (I love sushi. I'm having sushi, sushi, sushi, spam, sushi...) Just as she was finishing, she noticed a small commotion in the center of the room... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Well, keep me posted on the status of what ever happens with the story thing, I really enjoy reading them!!!! Wind to thy wings and chocolate roses to everyone, Andi Nature is not mute. It eternally repeats the same notes which reach us from afar, muffeled, with neither harmony or melody...It is up to us to strike the chords, to write the score, to bring forth the symphony, to give the sounds a form that, without us, they would not have. -Francois Jacob "The Statue Within" Rosencrantz: Because even though the four points of the compass There is only one direction And time is it's only measure... -Tom Stoppard "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead" ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Feb 1998 23:30:23 -0500 From: Carson Grey Bloomberg To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Braid - RP Message-ID: Rainbow writes: >What is the difference between Roleplaying, and what we are doing >already? please can SOMEONE explain this, Okay, there has already been a response to this, but here's my two bits: Well, role-playing is a more real-time activity, as opposed to what we're doing which kinda feels like writing our own fan-fiction story, or closer to fanfic than real-time RP is. Instead of each person just doing page-long posts of stuff they do, real-time RP goes more along the lines of this (please indulge me as my RP lust goes hog-wild for a moment): Isobelle enters into the hall, her long gown of pure blue silk shimmering and floating all about her like water as she blends in to mingle with some of her friends. "Oh, Issy!" A shrill, high-pitched, feminine, and incredibly annoying voice calls out above the low murmur of the crowds as a very round woman dressed in a loud neon pink dress (cut just a wee bit too tight for her ample figure) squirms through the people in front of her towars the general direction of the lady in blue, jostling an unfortunate waiter carrying a tray of h'ordeurves. Isobelle tries really hard to ignore the Countess Twinkie Fluffenutter, staying just out of reach. Countess Fluffenutter steps in front of Isobelle. "Well, hey there, honey, where you goin' off to so fast? I've got a *fabulous* gentleman I want to introduce you to. Wilbur? Wilbur? Now where did that boy run off to?" The Countess links arms with Jancine, dragging her off around the hall. Isobelle smiles very faintly, already dreading the evening to come... ***** Okay, so that's just my opinion and my view of it. More interactive. Now, admittedly, I bet Vanyel would throw a fit if we all just post two-line poses, waiting for replies from other players before posting more, so in this form I guess it's more common to pose long poses at once (not too difficult for me - my trouble is being concise, as you can tell with the size of this post...). Somebody please email me and let me know if I start getting too preachy/overstepping my bounds... And I just want to say that I concur with Cennydd in what he said about not posing stuff other people do without checking with them. It's a common complaint among some players in real-time RP, at least. >and also what were 'the mage >wars' that got thrown off that Cenndyn is talking about? The Mage Wars, from what I found out on the web page, is an RP-based list, where everyone has characters and basically the majority is like what goes on with this Friendship Ring plotline we've got going. Check out this link: http://www.sidwell.edu/~rholsen/magewar/archives.html It's the archives and there's an FAQ there, as well. Aerden writes: >I fell into the trap myself--mentioned Aerden's >firelizard. I won't do that again. Well, but firelizards are Pernese, and Anne McCaffrey allows lots of role-playing games centered around Pern. This may be 'chi' too - I am painfully ignorant in some areas. While I am not a Reiki 'do-er', I have had it done to me many a time. It's sort of an 'electric feild' around your body - hard to discribe to those that haven't had the experiance. It's strongest around your chest and head, and for ME (I dunno about others) my hands and feet. When you are sore or have pulled a muscle (as a dancer, I have done that many a time too!) your energy feild gets 'stronger' in that area. I sense it as an increase in heat or 'pingles' where the Reiki person's hands are. But I don't think that that was quite what you were trying to say. I'm going along more the lines of an aura here, I guess. Sort of a mini-envelope of heat/energy that folds around you. >Whoa...neat stuff, huh? You betcha!! I love this stuff, even if I dont understand 1\2 of it. But then again, live and learn, eh? ;) Thios also applies to the genetics stuff - I still don't understand a good half, but hey! She manages to slip in without anyone notices. In the center of the Hall, the Mage of Green Silences is starting a speech. Suddenly he gestures and a ring appears before him. The Warrior almost gasps in surprise. She has heard the magic in this land is different from where she comes from, but conjuring things seemingly from thin air is just breathtaking. *I wonder if I could get someone to teach me this magic.* The Mage presents the Ring to Lady Niki received the Ring. By the look of her face and the glow in her eyes, the Warrior concludes that the magic in the Ring is working. *A very nice gesture*, she thinks to herself. She hopes that one day she would receive the ring and then she can pass it to someone else. After the ceremony, people start to drift and converse among themselves. The Warrior thinks, maybe she should join them, but she's shy. She has spoken up a few times, but she is not ready yet to open herself to this group. Suddenly bubbles float in the hall, one bubble for every one of them. The Warrior heightens her magic senses to determine if the bubble approaching her carries good or bad intent. She finds it only brings goodness so she lets it drift to her lips and when it touches them, she can taste something that she doesn't recognize. Sweet and gooey. She loves it! Looking around, everybody seems to taste different things, and they all look to be having fun. She can feel the warmth and friendship among them. Yes, she's going to like it here. ********************************* Just my two cents ... 80 rupiahs! Haven't found a name for the Warrior yet. Stepping forward with a swirl of her black robe and a "clink" of her blade knocking off her mail (as in chain) under her full robes, she began making her way towards Sorana. Giggle bubbles swirled around the air, slowly popping as people bit into the bubbles. Slight giggles fill the room as the bubbles take effect. She smiles to herself. _Better blow more..._ Lifting her palm, she blew on it and glowing bubbles floated around the hall. _An odd property of bubbles. They take on any flavour_ Blade remembers the first time she tasted one..._hmm, It reminded me of peppermint..._ More giggles erupted around her, just as a small fairy stepped up to her and offered her an edible rose. Blade willingly took the Rose but refused to eat it. Casting a preservation spell on the Rose, Blade kept the Rose as a "souvenir". The Fairy smiled and moved away. Blade yelled her thanx... She joined the dancing crowd. Looking for the DJ of the place she finds that there is not a single DJ booth anywhere. _Hmm, a touch of modernization?_ Conjuring up a hi fi-set, and two amps, Blade settled in and blasted "I'll be there for you" by Solid Harmonie into the (so far) formal setting. Giggle bubbles glow with coloured lights (that are entirely edible). _Hope they don't mind some music..._ Blade looks around for the Goddess of Song and Music, who so long ago presented her with the magic arrows that are still on her person, hoping that the Goddess will not be offended. "Finally...I found you!", said the fair haired page as he searches his pockets for something. His search was eventually rewarded and he produced a message written on sea green parchment. The burnt cinnamon colored letters proclaimed the invitation "For ShadowWolf". ShadowWolf recognized the stationery immediately as belonging to the Mage of Green Silences and thought "What is the Mage up to now?" The page clears his throat reminding ShadowWolf that he is still standing there. ShadowWolf tells the boy "It's good that you found me when you did. I was about to leave the tavern and go hunting again. You would have never found me in the woods." The master thief buys the boy a small bag of the sheep shaped novelties that the tavern-owner has for sale and sends the page on his way. ShadowWolf then proceeds to read the message inviting him to the Hall of Mist for something special. As he reads the message ShadowWolf wonders at the perfect calligraphy of the invitation. "Has Cennyyd started using mechanical means to produce his messages?" ShadowWolf muses. "Not that I blame him, it would be a daunting task to write invitations to each person individually on the list." ShadowWolf arrives a few minutes ahead of the appointed time at the Hall of Mists. Already there is quite a crowd gathering. There sitting with the other councilors of Mist he sees Eleonora and remembers her fondly as one of the first people to make him feel welcome at these gatherings when he was still very much a newbie. And over there by the punch bowl he sees Shadow Blade. The new High Priestess of OOPS looks splendid in her formal robes. Then he sees that person that's been splashing salt water all over the place. Good...it looks like Yvonne left her bucket at home today. There are so many friends here it is hard to think of all their names. While ShadowWolf is trying to remember names, All attention turns toward the main entrance. Cennyyd strides into the hall gracefully looking very regal. Cennyyd announces that he has created a ring of Friendship to bring all of us closer together. Then he proceeds to present the ring to Lady Nikki and places the ring on her finger. Thunderous applause errupts from the gathered listsibs and merry-making continues well into the morning hours. And now for something completely different... In the Fire Rose Jason Cameron is partners with Leland Stanford and some other men in the railroad business. Leland Stanford was an actual historical person (founder of Stanford University). IIRC one of the rail barons in the old west was a recluse. Was Jason Cameron based on this person? So, if the MOC Chose a previously bonded Herald, the Herald's former Companion might be able to "un-bond" without causing a huge trauma (perhaps leaving the Herald with the sense of a loving friend who would always care for them, but who is no longer a huge part of their life) while the MOC's bond would take hold and replace the previous one. Having re-read Talia's Choosing on a number of occasions, I must say that her bonding doesn't sound anything like a natural emotional response. Rather it sounds as if it is an artificial (but very real and valid) bond created by Rolan (or perhaps the deity(s) that created the Companions). If that is the case, then I certainly don't see why it shouldn't function under slightly different patterns than we might normally expect from a natural bond. This would explain the references to the MOC Choosing a bonded Herald (re: Vanyel's worry that he might be Chosen or Teren's statement that the Chosen of the MOC is usually already a Herald): the former Companion would release the bond and the MOC would Choose the Herald instead. "Well?" I ask, in a level, one-brow-raised tone [not having mastered Mother's trick, I have to rely on tone to convey the expression my face cannot]. "Are you going to open, or not?" The door seems to hesitate a moment, during which I notice the exquisite symmetry of the arch surrounding it. *Nice stonework, that, close, evenly-spaced...* As the door slowly swings open, I seem to see vague, fluffy silhouettes on its polished surface. Striding through, feigning a confidence I do not feel, I turn and bow to the door closing sheepishly behind me. "Thank you," I say very politely, because, after all, one never knows. Passing from what seems to be some sort of side foyer, I emerge into a main passage, from which lead many other corridors and doors. As I cross the floor, I take in the full details of its intricate beauty. I see many surfaces--wood, tile, stone, carpet--a variety of colors, textures, and moods. Yet underneath it all, I sense the underlying unity of an organic whole. *All this, and level, comfortable, non-slippery surfaces too.* Being closer to the ground than most, I tend to notice such things. [Those few months working in construction didn't hurt either.] Not pausing to examine any in detail, I pass through a variety of rooms, designed for several purposes: conference and council chambers, music studios, trysting areas, places to sit and think, places to sit and dream...and I begin to suspect where I must be. Not that it's so hard, really. After all, I can't be dead; I haven't done anything like enough to deserve such a place as this. It's not enough to eschew evil in one's life; one must also a-choose great good. [Bless you.] I couldn't be delirious; my fever wasn't high enough. Nor could I be insane, for the same reason which eliminated delirium: this place simply couldn't have come from me. I can appreciate its many intricacies and delights, but not spontaneously create them all. I've spent enough time in my own mind to know what comes from there and what doesn't. Since I'm not in my own mind, it's natural to wonder if I'm in someone else's. It's after this thought that I begin to see the others moving about within this place, meeting, merging, parting, an ever-shifting pattern of fellowship. Although most do not, some of them see me. These smile and nod, being friendly without forcing a premature intimacy. As I wander about, watching, listening, sampling flavors of music, conversation, and ambiance, I begin to feel more at ease, particularly after deftly dodging some of the more rampageous [albeit, mercifully, housebroken] sheep with which this domain abounds. I find the most delightful little waterfall off a side corridor and through two or three pleasure-gardens. I even begin to learn the language a bit. I find that the word "newbie" means "please POUNCE and drench me." Although the POUNCE part looks agreeable enough, occurring as it always seems to on thick, warm rugs with large, friendly beings, still the drenching part is somewhat daunting, so I preserve my silence for the most part and consider limiting my visits to the delightful waterfall, just in case. Suddenly all voices are stilled, and all music ceases. A stir moves through and around us, as if the building itself were breathing. As if at some signal understood by them [although not by me], everyone begins moving towards what seems some sort of main hall. I am carried along by the crowd and my own curiosity. Even curiosity doesn't stifle prudence, however, so I let myself drift to the edge of the crowd, wary. The crowd is large, but the hall is larger still, so I am in no real danger. I'm safe enough, but clueless about what's causing the stir. So I follow along the wall until coming to some large, friendly bookshelves, up which I haul myself with the ease of old custom. Some of the smaller folk who have them are hovering on wings; the rest of us have to do as best we can. Although there are many in the middle of the chamber, there are greater numbers who, like me, prefer to remain on the side and watch. *My, we _are_ a good-lurking bunch, aren't we?* With a sigh, the crowd parts like ripples before *a most impressive young man. Looks as if he knows it, too.* He speaks eloquently of friendships that bind hearts together and then produces a wondrous Ring. This he presents to a shy-but-delighted young woman with a certain fey grace of her own. A wave of feeling sweeps the room, into which I'm caught up. Fair words and even wondrous displays might be tricks or traps, but such a feeling can never be feigned. It is genuine, enduring, _real_, as this place itself. And I know whereof I speak, I who have spent my life searching for the enduring meaning behind/beyond events themselves. It is the ideas and ideals we choose that shape us, give us meaning. There is a smell in the air, a feeling of tension, as just before lightning strikes. It is the feeling of a trained horse just before the beginning of a major race, or a Vedrayn right before a booksale: taut, planning ahead, ready for action. The others seem unaware of it, as, laughing, talking, marveling, they pass into the dining chambers just beyond. But I have smelled it on the air, and I know: there are stories here, treasures to be gathered and hoarded, cherished, and shared. I will trade knowledge for knowledge and skill for skill as is the way of my people, and I will trade friendship for friendship, as is the way of these new listsibs. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Feb 1998 11:32:47 -0800 From: Marie Bao To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Fire Rose question Message-ID: <34E1FCDC.CA2BCCD4-+AT+-uclink4.berkeley.edu> brianben-+AT+-worldnet.att.net wrote: > In the Fire Rose Jason Cameron is partners with Leland Stanford and > some > other men in the railroad business. From an interview with Misty (after she wrote Fire Rose) that I read somewhere on the web a while ago (does anyone know the web addy? It might have been Baen books), she mentioned that she found the time period and the railroad baron situation (?) a perfect world to set and weave her story so I assume that she did some research and based Jasom Cameron on a railroad baron (or simply inserted him into the time period...) Hope that helped. :-) ---Marie .. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Feb 1998 11:46:27 -0800 From: "maydela" To: Subject: unsubscribing Message-ID: <199802111946.LAA89586-+AT+-bp10.u.washington.edu> Could someone tell me how to unsubscribe please? thanks maydela -:) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Feb 1998 15:06:11 -0000 From: "Fallenangel" To: Subject: Re: On-going story list (Fluff) Message-ID: <006101bd36fe$97dedc40$538185a1-+AT+-skkohnkedelta.edu> So far everyone on the list to do an on-going story off-list is: Karen Chan kkchan-+AT+-ozemail.com.au Shadowdancer smartin-+AT+-ultiweb.com Chantal AERDEN-+AT+-delphi.com Samantha SamanthaMS-+AT+-aol.com Andi WindDancer dancer_of_wind-+AT+-hotmail.com Carson cgb5-+AT+-cornell.edu Femmy femmy-+AT+-melsa.net.id And me rlweidem-+AT+-alpha.delta.edu I'll be sending y'all the info soon, so thanks for your interest! *smiles all around* Fallenangel rlweidem-+AT+-alpha.delta.edu http://www.geocitiies.com/Area51/Lair/9421 ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 1488 **********************************
