Serenely she takes a look around and heads for an empty seat. Following her lean shape is a small young man dressed in brightly coloured garb with little bells fitted to it. His hair stands on end and he makes little jingling sounds when he moves. A lute is slung over his back, a lute in very bad shape. "We are late again", he complains snatching a chair from somewhere and taking his seat beside the somber woman. "I hope we didn't miss something. Did we miss something?" he asks a lady next to him. "Oh yes, sure, the most astonishing thing! Mind you, the Mage of Green Silences has given a Ring of Friendship to Lady Niki, that's the lovely one over there, you see? She is to give it to someone else in order to spread eternal friendship among the Listsibs", the lady explains, "and somebody conjoured lovely bubbles that tasted like jelly beans!" "Told you!" the young man exclaims to his red-haired friend, "you slept in again and we missed it all! What a great story it would have made! Jelly-bean bubbles, mind you." "I was roaming the forest all night, Torell", she reminds him quietly, "it was a dark moon, remember?" "Shantaya is a were-cougar", the young man explains to the Lady on his other side, "she has to go out hunting in cougar-shape every new moon. Hey, where are you going?" Shantaya Autumnleaf slightly shakes her head: "You frightened her. Most people aren't too fond of predators." Pouting Torell grabs a bowl of fruit. With the aid of some forks and knives he builts a crooked four-footed animal out of fruit. "Looks like a sheep" Shantaya remarks. "Like anything else in here", he growls, his mouth full of peach. For the first time this evening, Shantaya manages a wry grin. Maybe it was worth waking up this evening. "Oh, look over there", Torell suddenly cries out, "there's a newbie! I saw her first, this time!" Exitedly pouncing up and down, he reaches for a pot of custard and runs of. "Torell! Don't you dare!" Shantaya yells rushing off her seat and taking off after him. Too late!! Before she can try to reach him he has poured the whole contents of the custard over the astonished Jeanne Riverwolf. "It's good for the humour", he explains with a broad grin. Shantaya grabs his collar and gives him a good shake. "I am sorry for that", she says to Jeanne, "he is a Jester and sometimes quite out of his mind." "I am a bard in training", he interrupts her rudely, "just wait until I passed my exam!" Rolling up her eyes, Shantaya explains: "He IS a Jester. The last five times he failed in the bard's exam so he tries to make up for it by playing nasty jokes on other people." "I didn't fail but ones!" the young man exclaims, "I told you that I had to throw up while reciting this battle hymn and the third time I tried ...." But he is interrupted by the ongoing events in the banket hall. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Feb 1998 16:00:19 -0700 From: Tifalheart-+AT+-webtv.net (April Hunt) To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Jeanne meets friends Message-ID: <199802112300.PAA04291-+AT+-mailtod-131.iap.bryant.webtv.net> Shortly after her prescence was noticed in the hall, Jeanne found herself being drenched by a stunning water pixie named Yvonne, however, she had been expecting it and wasnt at all suprized....What did get her was the Custard...it made her remember a few fond friends by the names of Rincewind and the Fool and Chuckie, so she tolerated the quaint customs of the region, as long as it made everyone else happy. Standing there drenched in salt-water and custard, she wondered how she would possibly ever get cleaned up again, and be semi-presentable in her all grey clothing... She heard a low male laugh benind her, and felt the flutter of little wings all around her body. As she spun around to face this new person, she noticed that all traces of water and custard were cleaned by an elemental magic. It was her old friends, Jareth and Cheylasa, the Dese'ala'ima'quah....a fairy-human couple bonded in purpose by the gentle fairy goddess Ariana or her twin goddess, Methusalah. They went to the far extent of dressing exactly alike, a sleevless green vest, with red piping over a red long sleeved shirt. followed by baggy pants drawn up around the knees, where a pair of long boots extended to cover the feet. They even wore maching silver bracelets around their right wrists. They were the leaders of their people, hence the 'quah after Dese'ala'ima. Jeanne sighed a breath of relief, thanking Jereth's gentle fairy princess for cleaning her off, and introduced them both to her new found friends and listsibs, particularly Shantaya and the jester Torel. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Feb 1998 15:12:36 -0800 (PST) From: Ana Cotton To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: re:fluff story-longish Message-ID: <19980211231236.1496.rocketmail-+AT+-attach1.rocketmail.com> Ana continued to wander about the hall, interestedly looking at people and the animals. A bubble appeared and popped in her face. *youch! Oooh, chocolate!* Blinking she grinned to herself. Someone began playing music, "I'll be there for you.." *Hmm. Wonder if there's going to be dancing?* She looked down at her clothes, *But, I'm not in dancing togs.* Ana intercepted a page as she walked by, "Excuse me, can you show me where I might find something to change into?" "Yes, my Lady assuredly there is a wardrobe full, follow me." The page led Ana to a room full of clothing, and mirrors. "If milady would like--" "Ana, just Ana, please." "Lady Ana," the page said stubbornly. Ana sighed, "Right then, wait for me will you?" "Indeed milady, I most assuredly will." Inspecting the clothes, and then finding something that fit took a bit. But, looking in the mirror Ana decided it was *definitely* worth it. A black full sleeved, silk blouse with blue embroidery, and matching black jeans. And her boots *can't get rid of those now can I?* The page-Ilia-led Ana back to the room, where music was still being played- "We Are Family" *hmm, what, disco night?*. She decided to wander over and offer her services as DJ, or if not that, then request some good dance songs-for dancing of course. "Is back! Happy/joy/joy time! You like it here?" "Yes, I do, thank you. Now, lets go ask the DJ nicely if we can play with the board. OK?" "Yes, DJ, music fun." On the way to the board Ana was rather distracted as the DJ began to play "Dead Man's Party" by Oingo Boingo. Deciding not to bother the DJ-as he or she obviously had good taste in music-she drifted onto the dance floor and began to dance. === This is getting fun! I am nearing the end of MPawn, and something I'd recently started to believe is making more and more sense to me. Isn't it entirely possible that Leareth and Krebain are BOTH incarnations of Ma'ar? I say this for a couple reasons. 1. Although this may be the least reason to suspect so, Krebain was a changeling. And much like Ma'ar he concentrated his efforts in the Pelagirs. While many blood mages may have similar tendencies, something about this made me want to associate Krebain with Falconsbane. 2. After Vanyel destroys Krebain, the dreams of Leareth disappear. Now granted, if Ma'ar had stayed as Krebain, the dream would have been even more unlikely, but who says he couldn't body jump? And before you say that the time won't permit, remember how many descendants Ma'ar tried to make sure there were in each incarnation. Also, Krebain is around when Vanyel is only 16. If I remember MPrice correctly, isn't Vanyel around 40+ by then? More than enough time for another descendent to come of age and make an attempt at the fire spell. Remember, he wouldn't have to sit and wait through infancy if there was another descendent already alive. Ah well. Just my thoughts. I thought the dreams were-when Van met Lendel-about his emptiness inside and his need to be loved-i.e. a Lifebond screaming for recognition, and then his other dreams after he was chosen were Pre-cognition(Foresight, for those not into McCaffrey's Talents series.) That might have been like Skan said, because he killed Krebain, and then when Leareth started coming into power, they started again....I also believe that Misty hints that M'aar was the mage responsible for destroying Tarma's clan in the stories previous to Oathbound and Oathbreakers....in yet another incarnation,a nd may also turn out to be involved in the Sun and Shadow story or-my own hunch-Lavan Firestorm, which of course Griffon has his gift now....lets hope no more copses go up in flames....okay, one more q-does anyone know if there was any reason to include a seemingly rare Mind-Gift(Projection) in AOQ, that was Neave, one of the Chosen in Ylsa and Trevans class that Talia was also in....was he Chosen only to make Talia aware of her gift of Empathy? One would think that such an unusual gift-that showed up at the same time as an Empath and a Firestarter, would be made mention of later on, but no! Also, I would love to see the story of Lavan Firestorm included on that Timeline of Misty's-first in Hardback, as tradition is wont to show....all for now-Jeanne Riverwolf. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Feb 1998 17:23:37 -0700 From: Adrienne Metz To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Leareth/Krebain Message-ID: <3.0.1.32.19980211172337.0069ad24-+AT+-pop.u.arizona.edu> >2. I still say that Leareth and Krebain were not the same because even though Krebain was in Van's young life, Leareth had been working his nastiness since before Vanyel came along. He says this at the end of MPrice. (no textevd--sorry) So, unless Ma'ar could go between two bodies, which is highly unlikely, they are not both incarnations of Ma'ar. Plus, someplace else there is a fairly extensive listing of who Falconsbane's past lives were. Leareth is mentioned, and Krebain is not. Keep in mind also that Ma'ar's personality usually spend quite a bit of time building up a stonghold before outrightly attacking anybody. I think it would have taken longer than the *normal* human lifetime to build up what Leareth had at the end of MPrice; he would have extended his life by using magic. The mage of Green Silence. A strange title, yet somehow so fitting. The young man ponders this for some time. He is enentually brought back to present by the murmers of fellow spectators. "Excuse me!" something has these people attention. If only I were taller I could see. "Or maybe if you would step out of the shadows once and while young fellow." says a voice out of no where. "Who said that?" questions the youngster. "Why, me, the voice of pondering things and maker of statements." again the person is no where to be seen. " I would have stepped out of the shadows earlier, but I was busy." said the now shy young man. "Is that the only reason?" inquires the voice. " Well, no. "Very well, but I hope you make it back in time for the feast." "I'll try" says an already distant young man. He has gone to a very isolated place to think. "Be more assertive, what an idea" he weighs the possibilities in his mind. I really should be more assertive, but what if I get laughed at for asking a stupid question. A light wind passes over the young man's head"Don't be afraid" whispers the wind to him. "Don't be afraid. Smart wind. I think I shall do as told. I must now go to the feast." Sheridan Hoy: "I have a feeling that the MOC may attempt to choose someone not already chosen..." Me: Okay, this whole issue confused me in AoQ. The way I see it is there are two choices: either there is a simple, logical explanation for this phenomenon/ability to choose already-chosen heralds. Two, there is no explanation, and it's simply a quirk of Misty's Arrows series. So if it's the former, then it should follow that Misty threw that in on purpose (after all, she made the point a couple of times, about MOC picking whichever Herald he/she needs). Since we've been given centuries of Valdemar history without any mention of a Companion ever doing so, it would seem that this would make it a special-case scenario, and perhaps someday Misty will explore it. So perhaps that's what it's there for -- a little anomaly, available for expansion if Misty ever chooses to do so. Now, if it's the latter (i.e., no explanation), the ability/necessity to choose whichever Valdemaran best-suited, even if that means an already-chosen Herald, might have been thrown in just to give a sense of how special the MOC is. **** On the Krebain/Leareth thing: Adrienne said: "Keep in mind also that Ma'ar's personality usually spend quite a bit of time building up a stonghold before outrightly attacking anybody. I think it would have taken longer than the *normal* human lifetime to build up what Leareth had at the end of MPrice; he would have extended his life by using magic." I think this is the strongest argument for Leareth not being Krebain (although the listing of Ma'ars personalities including Leareth but excluding Krebain sounds like a pretty decisive reason too). Although a number of people (sorry, don't have names) have offered a good argument about Ma'ar having many descendants, I think I recall in Winds reading about how much energy it takes out of Leareth, and that it takes a long time to build power. --Niki, sigless as ever ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Feb 1998 02:30:59 -0600 From: Jim Magnuson To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: RE: Leareth/Krebain Message-ID: <210626502E23D111A93E00A02413C75A5B0F-+AT+-CHAOS> Hello, I've been lurking for a couple of days, but I have something to say about this. As for Krebain being Ma'ar? Nope, Krebain hired himself out to kill pople. Ma'ar would never let himself be in that position. There was also a huge difference in power level between Krebain and all of Ma'ar's reincarnations. As for Leareth being Ma'ar? Well, Leareth would have been a good example of an incarnation of Ma'ar, but still nope. Ma'ar had to gather his energies and send his spirit out of his body to get to his hiding place. Both Krebain and Leareth died in a way that would have been to quick to do this action, therefore I don't think either one of them could have been Ma'ar. Also, I noticed people talking about why the dreams came and went. This is what I think. Vanyel seemed to only have the dreams during key moments in his life where he had options to go out and do different things. Vanyel would have the dream and because he had the dream he would act and do something. At least this is what his foresight seemed to work for him. *shiver* Makes more cense in my head than typed out..
