(Can't resist :) Still, since I'm out, I guess I probably ought to introduce myself... I go by the handle Typodragon (or Typo, or The One Without A Social Life) & am still languishing in the throes of Undergrad-dom (somewhere in the limbo between Junior & Senior years). The genetics discussion interests me because my major is animal science/livestock genetics, and besides Mike & writing, science is the love of my life. T'was too neat to pass up :). To answer some old questions...my favorite book of Misty's was _Magic's Pawn_, with _Born to Run_ running a close second. My favorite character was/is Tannim, with Skandranon in second (yes, I am also a Spiderman fan. Can you tell? ;). As far as other things go...I still don't understand the sheep references (yeah...still haven't gotten around to checking "Newbiefest" -- in a way, it makes for kind of a neat mystery...;) Okay, as far as the genetics question goes, I agree that the pattern is polygenic (controlled by more than one gene) and additive (see Deniz Sarikaya's Frugian Blastules for a good explanation). I feel that this goes a very long way toward explaining the "how parents without gifts can produce children with gifts" question. Another possibility, which might also contribute is the possibility that giftlessness is the result of an _epistatic_ effect, which I'll try to explain with an example from Breeding and improvement 311: (you'll have to pardon the farm animals in my examples...I am an agriculture major, after all ;) -- Consider that the gene for coat color in horses is controlled by genes at two different points on a chromosome (two different loci). On the first locus, B codes for a black coat, and is dominant to b, which codes for a brown coat. On the second locus, W codes for the expression of coat color and w codes for the absence of coat color (albinoism) The ww gene pair, therefore, has an epistatic effect. So the following genotypes (gene combinations) produce the related phenotypes (actual observed color of the animal): _GENOTYPE_.................._PHENOTYPE_ BBWW..................... Black BbWW..................... Black bbWW..................... Brown BBWw..................... Black BbWw..................... Black bbWw..................... Brown BBww..................... White Bbww..................... White bbww..................... White You can simplify this by saying that B*W* yields a black animal, bbW* yields a brown animal, and **ww yields a white animal. So if we considered just one possible gift -- Mindspeech, since it seems to be one of the most common, and the epistatic effect was dominant, then the pattern might look like this: (where G = no expression of gift, g = expression of gift, M = no potential for mindspeech, m = potential for mindspeech) _GENOTYPE_...................._PHENOTYPE_ MMGG.......................... no gift MmGG.......................... no gift mmGG.......................... no gift MMGg.......................... no gift MmGg.......................... no gift mmGg.......................... no gift MMgg.......................... no mindspeech Mmgg.......................... no mindspeech mmgg.......................... mindspeech That might also explain how parents without gifts, and even entire families expressing no gifts can produce a few gifted individuals. Taking Lani Hunter's idea about Mindgifts being produced by combinations of genes...(snip) >...I use a sequence of genes for the various gifts, with different sequences giving you different capabilities and different goodies. Like aa-Bb is a different thing from Aa-Bb or aa-bb...< What if, like the model with mindspeech above, G = no expression of gift and g = expression of gift, but we looked at three possible gift gene pairs instead of one: I = no potential for firestarting i = potential for firestarting F = no potential for fetching f = potential for fetching E = no potential for empathy e = potential for empathy Now say we have two parents: * Mrs. Holderkin has the genotype GgIiFfEe and has no gifts * Mr. Holderkin also has the genotype GgIiFfEe and has no gifts Out of their many children (you know how those holderkin folks breed ;) they produce only one child that is _both_ homozygous recessive for the expression-of-gift gene pair (gg) and homozygous recessive for one of the gift-potential gene pairs (ee). * Her genotype is ggIiFfee, and she shows expression of the trait empathy. Now, does this girl have Fetching or Firestarting potential? No. No matter what happens to her in life, she is never going to express anything but empathy, the one "gift" trait that she has two recessive genes for. However, she does carry one gene in each gene pair for the expression of Fetching and firestarting. These are genes she can pass on to her offspring. So say she hooks up with a dashing young herald named Dirk who expresses Fetching as his heraldic Gift. His genotype might be: Dirk's genotype: ggIiffEE Dirk's phenotype: Expresses potential for Fetching If they produce 2 children, in the random shuffling of genes, the kids might end up with: First child's genotype: ggiiFfEE First child's phenotype: expresses potential for Firestarting -- This might explain how two Gifted parents might produce a child with a gift that neither of them express. Second child's genotype: ggIiFfEe Second child's phenotype: Does not express potential for any gift. -- This would explain how two Gifted parents might produce an unGifted child. It might also explain why children produced by Gifted individuals have a higher-than-average but not 100% incidence of expressing potential for gifts. Also, I don't know if anyone in this discussion has gone back to look at Talia's first experiences in Herald's Magic class, but did remember them explaining about the different "families" of gifts: AOTQ p270: "We put the four of you [Neave, Talia, Drake, & Edric] in a class together because you all demonstrate Gifts in the same 'family' of talents," the Dean began, as his bright, round eyes met each of them in turn. "Your gifts of what we call 'magic' are all in the areas of communication..." AOTQ p280: "The other two groups have to do with moving things with thought alone, and seeing at a distance," Ylsa said. "We tend to lump them under the names of 'Fetching' and 'Sight' AOTQ p280: ...[asking about Dirk -- fetching, and Kris -- farSight] Insatiable curiosity, Talia confessed. "I--kind of wonder how their Gifts are related to my own." "Seeing's probably the closest; emotions are powerful attractants for the mind's eye. In fact, you have more than a touch of that particular Gift yourself, as you've noticed. I've told you that no one ever has just one Gift with no hint of the others, haven't I? You've got enough thoughtsensing and Sight to possibly be useful in an emergency -- maybe just a hint of Healing as well...you will generally have to See things through the eyes of someone present unless there's a lot of emotional residuum to hold you, and then it will be very vague. They can See things as if they were observing them dirctly, even if there's nobody there..." Anybody want to discuss which Gifts have a higher correlation with each other, and why? Okay, this was longer than I intended, but I'll wrap up with one more thought on the importance of environmental effects in "unblocking" Gifts. No matter what the potential, if the environmental effects are not right for expression, the trait will not be expressed. The environmental effects already suggested include malnutrition, and the hormones that increase in concentration at puberty, but other possibilities might include shocks of certain chemicals at critical points (such as high-level amounts of adrenaline released at times of intense stress...[Talia's gift awakening in a moment of panic, Tylendel's MageGift awakening during a sexually intense moment, Vanyel's Gifts awakening in a moment of both acute mental anguish and physical stress caused by the flow of energy]) or like Vanyel's situation, possible physical/mental damage caused by magic or some other external source. It's something to keep in mind, anyway. ..In any case, thanks for listening to my rambling a while. :) Through Sunsets Golden, --Typodragon ----------------------------------------------------------- Burn brightly while you burn, my friend, Live fully while you live, For Life is Brief, And all we have to leave Is what we give. --H.A. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Feb 1998 09:47:22 -0800 (PST) From: Carrie MacDonald To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Talia&Rapist // Story Message-ID: <19980217174722.7401.rocketmail-+AT+-send1d.yahoomail.com> *delurk mode* Well, if I remember correctly, someone mentioned that if Talia had been around when Lendel went crazy, he would have been found. IIRC, it was said that there had /never/ been a Hereld with a Empathic Gift like Talia. It was basically her sole gift, which had never happened before, and it was /very/ powerful. So, while there was other mindhealers around, none where as powerful as her, and maybe could not have caught what Lendel was hiding from /everyone/. And I think he was crazy with greif and rage with his brother's dying, then crazy with sorrow and lonileness when Gwyth died. ******************************************************* In a small enclove off of the Hall of MIST, Morgana raises her head. : Music. Chayla bends her head slightly and sees a feather covered with blood. Frightened and alone, the healer inside her takes over and she scans the bushes nearby and notices a rustling. Firstly, can someone please tell me in what book does Skiff torture anyone, because I am very lost regarding that. Thanks. Secondly, I think that the Companions chose people who have the qualities that will make them good Heralds, and these people also have some talent in mind gifts, which the Companions enhance. In Arrows of the Queen: "...the Companions seem to strengthen our gifts, and develop the ones that are latent" However, a Companion chooses first on the personality, and then on their gifts. I know that there is a quote about that somewhere but I can't lay my hands on it. Also re the Companions, I found that passage that I mentioned before in which in states that Grove-born Companions are younger than most, and not infallible. (It's in Winds of Fury incase anyone wanted to know)."...as Companions go-when compared to, say, Sayvil-she is very, very young. No older than you in fact. She makes all the kinds of mistakes that any young thing makes, but because she is Grove-Born, she thinks that she will always make the right decision......She forgets that she has no real human experience to base her decisions on." Also I agree with what the Niki and Sorchafyr said about Tylendel's repudiation. Thirdly, I have just read Heather's very interesting message on Genetics, and it explained heaps. Deserved what he got-and worse. (Personally, I would not have agonized over the choice as much as she did, either. I do not, however, have much in the way of compassion or mercy.) As I said, I also agree with what happened to the villain in _When the Bough Breaks_. Vanyel/Tylendel: Firstly, there are some fairly extreme differences between the two things. As someone said, the people 'Lendel was going after hadn't personally done anything to him. They were innocent folk, enjoying a Harvest festival. This brings up the question of whether or not Tylendel would have been repudated for going after Leshara himself-I think not, but Gala might not have gone along with it either, since it would have continued the feud and there were more lawful ways to settle it. The people Van killed-feh. Bandits. IMHO, I would've wiped them all out (big explosion-type thingie) except for the boy and the healer, who he couldn't really help killing. Also, I do think the premeditation plays a big role in this-Vanyel didn't have a choice at first (I don't think so, anywho. The healer-guy wrecked the block and all the power came pouring out. Something like removing a dam. Not Safe.), and after that he was insane for a bit. Hello, April. Hmmm. This keeps coming up. Several people in the recent past have expressed dismay at not getting replies/acknowledgement. Again, I find myself offering sympathy. Please, don't think that a lack of immediate response means that no-one has noticed you or that you aren't appreciated or welcome. Sometimes, it just works out that what you say doesn't spark a direct reply. But you might get a reply/mention later on down the line, and certainly you have been noticed by your listsibs. And frequently, the better you say something (the more thorough your argument), the less likely you are to get a direct response beyond "what she said!" Of course, this isn't always the explanation, but it sometimes is. Anyway, thank you for the textevd post. I'm sure that I am not the only one who was glad to see some real evidence from the books. The only thing about that is that the only reason we thought Tylendel might get re-Chosen was if he was helped and made sane again, and seeing as he was insane when he was repudiated....Never mind, I'm not sure where I'm going with that. Heck, I'd just like to hear more about the conditions under which Companions repudiate their Heralds. >Anyone know if Tylendel came back as a Companion? After Van left Sorrows >in WoFury (I think) I wonder if he ever returned.... I don't think he did. I doubt he or Van would opt to return after spending so much time in the Forest of Sorrows. Then again, maybe they like being around so much they come back. Here's the SPOILER part. *If you haven't read past Winds, don't read further if you don't want a clue as to plot twists in the next books* I seem to remember Van and Stefan's souls getting blasted literally to the Havens for helping out the group, right? Or in the energy of that last blast thing they got 'dissappated' or something. Or was that the Avatars? Both? I remember very few people actually living through that thing. All listsibs, I know that Cennyd/Kenny is mostly in charge of our jobs, but I would like to be sure that you all want me as the Textevd Goddess(as I am planning to change the job title to, at least in my own mind, its a personal joke) Thank you soooo much Kenny for offering me the job, its a lot of fortuneatly thankful hard work but I am sure I can do it, If all my listsibs can read me through all the misspellings, i may have the gift-curse of being a writer, but perfect spelling was not included in that little package...Being offered the job is even better than being given a friendship ring, in my not so humble opinion, I wish you all lots of MInt-Chocolate-Chip sheep....or whatever your flavor preference is! She's been lurking for awhile, and isn't sure who to go talk to. She's read about everyone, of course, but to finally meet them ( and their non-human friends) is a little overwhelming. And she's trying really hard to avoid those people with buckets. She didn't announce herself when she first came, and so hasn't been pounced or drenched yet *yikes, what did I just do????* Wow, there are so many amazing people here...and ummm, others, and the music is great, although not exactly to her taste. *hmmmm....I wonder how everyone would feel if I requested a little TuPac or Snoop....better wait 'til I know them better.* Dre is a little confused. She was sitting home one night reading her email before she went to a party, when all of a sudden she was in the Halls of Mist. * Not that I'm sad to be here, of course...just startled! Well, at least I came prepared for dancing! I'm all dressed up for a party, so here goes!* She walks out into the light, expecting a good drenching, and decides to just talk to whoever comes up to her *Hey, I'm still shy!* ok, this is my first attempt at actually contributing, except for a few really little responses...sorry so long, and anyone can use my character if they want to.....i love to talk!!! -Dre....a lurker seriously fearing a drenching now ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Feb 1998 22:30:10 EST From: Ambyrglow-+AT+-aol.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Braid Message-ID: << "Seashimmer!
