I have been utterly buried by the amount of list messages! *grin* Now, I'm sneaking a little time that ought to be spent folding clothes for a few quick replies and an appearance.... ************************** Genetics: Oooh you people are seriously too serious...*grin* actually, I've enjoyed the bits and peices and have saved them for looking at later. ************************** Van/Tylendel/Talia: I was never happy with the Tylendel repudiation, and like it was recently stated I think Gala jumped the gun, and I think someones (yes, that is meant) should have done something (Many people noticed, but decided that it would just blow over like any adolescent trouble). But back to Gala, I think she was suprised and feeling guilty for not sticking her nose in earlier and so, threw herself into the "good fight". Gala wasn't very old as Companions go IIRC (10 + a couple). As for Van, it has also been pointed out previously that he was locked in a power loop trying to break out, when the key went..so did the power. 'Fandes is also much older and more experienced than Gala and could understand feelings of revenge, and understand accidents happening...for that's what it was, an unfortunate (or fortunate) accident. When Talia nearly loses control of her gift and almost hurts Kris, everyone is very shocked and frightened, but it is an accident, so no repudiation evident. As for what she did to the guy...I believe in just retribution, which differs slightly from revenge in my mind. Call it reality discipline. I always wondered what happened to Gala...did she get reinc'd or just go to the Havens? And what happened to Tylendel's twin? If the bond was THAT strong why didn't he get to go live with them in the forest? ****************************** Oathbreakers: Sure, they're Carrach's favorites. We started with them too. Just bring up a topic and I'll dust off the brain cells! *************************** The rest is as they say...fluff..... Dax the Eternal looked into the mirror before stepping lightly across the threshold of the portal that opened into the Hall of Mist. Her golden-red hair, curling lightly down her back nearly to her thighs, green eyes flashing with amusement and a touch of exasperation. Creamy skin was set off nicely by the low-cut black velvet gown seeded with diamonds. "There," she thought to herself, "This should be perfect to attend the Ring Ceremony in." She patted a last wayward lock into place, smoothed the velvet over her hips and called back over her shoulder to Carrach,"are you coming? Put the books down for a moment and lets go...there's sure to be a party afterwards." Getting ready had been nearly impossible...the pixies had hidden her new shoes and there had been an infestation of trollings rampaging through the Realm that had taken hours to organize a resistance to oust. She had almost had to call on Raven and Blade, but didn't like to interrupt her priestess lives too often. She shifted to unicorn, to make sure that her form was perfect there, too. "Yes, mane and tail braided, hooves and horn polished... Carrach? Are you coming? I'm going now." "I can't wait any longer," she thought to herself, and then aloud called out, "I'm going ahead, I'll see you when you get there, I don't want to miss the ceremony." "Sure, sure," she finally heard in reply, "go on, I still have three more cases to mediate, I'll catch up." Stepping over a small toy shield that one of the pixies had apparently dropped, she stepped over the portal, only after realizing that next to the shield was a small, steel, sword... "No!", the cry was torn from her lips as the chaos of the gate took her. Dax spun in twisting spirals, time whipping her hair like the wind of wildfire. Finally with a thumph, she landed, quite unceremoniously upon her royal rear. "Well, base your portal out of Oklahoma and what do you expect....A yellow brick road?" She brushed the hair back out of her eyes and looked around. "Hmm, not friendly, not the Hall of Mist, not a portal in sight...oh frag." A dark, forbidding landscape met her gaze, "If I catch the critter that left a steel sword by a portal, I'll......", words failed her. "Well, maybe there's still time to get to the ceremony." Changing into Unicorn form, Dax drew a door in the air with her horn, spun out the requisite energy, "that's why I like permanant portals", she thought, changed back and stepped through..... Into the gardens outside the Hall. There were a few couples walking arm and arm through the flowers, some of whom turned in startlement and then bowed and curtsied as she was recognized. What a way to show up. "Excuse me, but what day is it? Has the Ceremony happened yet?" Music drifting out into the garden answered her second question. "Yes, your Ladyship," a young courtier nodded, "nearly two weeks ago, the ring was given to Lady Niki and last Friday it was given to the Warrior, next Friday, the Warrior will give it to someone new." The Courtier was polite in answer, but couldn't hide a hint of smile at the disarray of the Goddess of Unicorns and Elves. "Perhaps, you might like to freshen up?" "Oh, bother, " Dax said, "I've missed everything! Where's A bucket of sea water when you need one? My hair's a mess and my dress is muddy....and..." she trails off, elf sense kicking in and overwhelming her snit. "Why I do believe that some of my estranged children are in attendance. Well, quit laughing and tell me where to change...." Dax the Eternal, goddess of elves and unicorns, evangelist of low humor, knight of fluff slowly peering out from under the pile of fluff.... ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Feb 1998 00:12:39 -0500 From: brianben-+AT+-worldnet.att.net To: Subject: Re: MERCEDES-LACKEY digest 1499 Message-ID: <19980220051418.AAA8793-+AT+-brianben> Ana said: > About the story: if we are going to have a seperate list (and this > isn't to say that we are) does anyone have any idea how to set one > up? === We could all send our posts to one person and that person could forward the posts to all of the contributors. Yes, some of Anthony's books I really enjoyed. Other books that he wrote just got tedious. Sometimes the quality would go way down even in the same series. The Xanth novels were fun at the beginning but how many puns can you endure. The early Phaze books were very good. I wish the quality had remained in the later books. The only collaborations I have read involving Misty are IIPTNIG, which I loved, and TBB, which I loved even more. I think with Tiger Burning Bright, each author might have taken one main character each and developed them according to a basic story line, or something. Maybe. Who knows. My thoughts on that are two possibilities: A. The Herald was correct, and every person in the population has some form of the same Gifts as Heralds, although these Gifts are so weak they are hardly detectable. This would suggest that epistasis is not going on, that there is no on/off gene, and that Giftedness/nonGiftedness is controlled by the kind of continuous variation that Lani Hunter wrote about, and that nonGiftedness is really only a situation where the genes for Gift are present, but not present in sufficient quantities to express a Gift that can be detected (by Heralds or Companions). This seems hold true, especially for mindspeech, weak empathy, and powers connected with sensing of the earth. My only question in that case is -- what about the MageGift, Sight, Fetching, and Firestarting? These seem to be either present or not, and from what I've read, are occasionally present, but do not appear to be common in the general population. Perhaps they are only detectable in larger "doses" than the others. What did the Herald mean when he(she?) said that everyone has Gifts? That phrase could be interpreted several ways. I'll try to get some textevd to check out this idea. B. The herald was incorrect, and was basing the assumption on observations. People who are unusually keen at observing others' expressions, tone of voice, word choice, actions, etc., might be credited with having empathy of some sort, even if this ability is a completely different pathway from the one the Heralds recognize as a MindGift. Individuals that are very intimate -- twins, couples, etc. can often "finish each other's sentences", which might be mislabeled as Mindspeech. Would these be counted as a weak form of the same Gifts the Heralds classified as Empathy and Mindspeech, or would this be a case of humans using whatever innate talents they happen to possess to accomplish what needs to be done? I feel in many cases, Amberdrake and company were extreme examples of exactly that: although many of them did have and use mindGifts and/or magic, their equally important abilities were in the skills they learned, careful attention and study of other people, and an intimate knowledge of their patients/clients. The most effective of the kestra'chern (is this right? I'm blanking on the name for some reason) were those that employed every talent they had to help their clients, not just Empathy, but listening. Not just Mindspeech, but carefully chosen words. Not just Healing in the magical sense, but understanding of the physical, mental, and emotional systems under their care. Who is to say where the Gifts ended and the gifts began? One could say that the Heralds learn to attack their problems in much the same way -- employing every tool at their disposal in the most efficient way possible; whether this involves using two Gifts they happen to possess together, or one Gift and a little help from their friends, or no Gifts at all but a little common sense. All I mean by this argument is that by the time the training of the Collegium, or in many cases, the "training" each person experiences while learning to cope with their particular talents is over, the total package looks very different from the sum of its genes. This could also be considered an environmental effect -- in breeding, environmental effects are a pain in the ass because they complicate the analysis of deviations with non-genetic factors, leading to less accuracy. In much the same way, the compensations each person in the population may have made to deal with a Gift (magical or otherwise) or lack thereof could easily confuse anyone's attempt to categorize, classify, or analyze the situation. IMHO, The Heralds that train in MindGifts seem to simply be doing the best they can to explain and hone a phenomenon with too many variations to easily understand. **+-.__.+--*+-__.-._--+**-.+--.__FLUFF__.._.--*-._.-+---.__.-+*-._.-.-+-. Typo arranges herself comfortably on the cool stones in an untenanted corner of the Halls of Mist. The music surrounds her, and she pricks up long, delicately-winged ears to catch the sounds of myriad centuries twining through the air. With a quiet and wonderfully toothy draconic smile, she unclips the catch on her backpack and pulls out a (relatively) compact laptop computer roughly the size of a folding party table, noting with some relief that not a single one of her deep teal scales seems to be missing from the squeeze through the door. She stretches her wings carefully as the computer begins to hum and glow a cheerful blue, looking wryly back at the dimensions of the door. A grand entryway, certainly, but a bit of a tight fit for an almost fully-grown dragon. Still, being a practical sort, squeezing the broad shoulders and broader wings through seemed more appropriate than using magic to shrink herself or widen the door. Now, only when she stands at full height does her deep blue crest brush the ceiling, and even with her soft-blue and gently purple-tinged wings at full span, there is plenty of room to spare between the walls. She curls up contentedly in front of the glowing blue screen, twines her long tail back around her body and sweeps the last bit just under her forearms to comfortably type (no sense in courting carpal tunnel syndrome in wrists that big!). With short-clawed front talons clicking away, she relaxes in the congenial warmth of the room and the people within, occasionally stopping to catch a wayward bubble (cinnamon mocha with whipped cream!) that passes by. Once, she looks up and catches sight of a scholarly-looking gentleman entering the gathering-room from some other part of the Halls. With a warm and sleepy, hazel-eyed smile, she nods a greeting and returns to her work. ...Or, at least, that was the idea. From nowhere, a sticky shower of red goo drenches her from nose-tip to tail-tip. Yes, the typodragon appears to have been...JAMMED. Blinking in astonishment, she snakes out a forked tongue to test the new coating. Hmm...raspberry. Only one man would dare to give me the raspberry... Silly humans. With a chuckle and a deep bow of gratitude for the sincere, albeit sticky, honor, she conjures a small shield to protect her computer and backpack from the drips (magic does have a few practical uses, after all ;) and stands to find some of that ever-present salt water to wash of with... I just want to say um...lots of things... a)I've just started the Arrows trio, *blushes for being on such OLD books* and it says in the beginning that THE COMPANION/HERALD LINK CANNOT BE BROKEN EXCEPT BY DEATH!!! (soz for shouting...) So...from that I think that 'Lendel's repudiation was *only* because of his 'soul' already being 'dead' because he was overtaken by grief, rage and a lust for revenge, also Gala KNEW she'd die fighting the wysra and it'd be a Final Strike more-or-less, so I think she DIDN'T think very hard, and although it's called repudiation I think she only said 'You are not my Chosen' to give her an excuse to break the link so he had a CHANCE to survive her death, I think the Death Bell toiled because 'Lendel realised what he'd done, his Companion had died to save HIM, and he had died because no matter what Gala thought he was very closely bonded to her. I think these are the conditions for 'repudiation' 1) the Herald is more-or-less 'soul' dead (ie maddened or insane) 2) the Herald's Companion knows s/he won't survive and wants to give her Chosen a hope of surviving 3) the Companion is not thinking clearly and/or being driven in a certain way (so Van meets 'Fandes, we all know how much Companions LOVE Great Destinies! Winds trio!) Of course this is only IMVHO!!!!! <> I think it's because to all intents and purposes 'Lendel WAS Stefen and in Sorrows Stefen was the name Van used, and I think it's the idea that Van got to chose WHO came with him, and because he had been with Stef, NOT 'Lendel he only wanted Stef, and anyway, Stef was 'Lendel BUT he was also himself, he had never had a twin, and anyway, Van didn't KNOW StefAn, and he probably didn't want anyone other than his Lifebonded (2s company, 3s a crowd) oh yes and 'Fandes, who wouldn't interfere! This is all I can think of... Rainbow 'And still the forest of the North guards Valdemar from harm- For Vanyel's dying curse is stronger far than mortal arm. I noticed that someone asked who Deveran Remoerdis was, and he was in fact the King of Lineas until killed in the accident that forms the majority of the plot for MPrice. I am assuming that Baires and Lineas, since they are never again mentioned would be absorbed into Valdemar, especially seeing as they had previously already been client-states. On the repudiation and criminals topic, when Vanyel first arrives in Highjorune (throne seat of Lineas), and sees Herald Lores beating the "Ghost" companion, an argument ensues. Granted I think it would be a bit extreme, but there is mention that Lores' Companion (Jenna I believe her name is) is paralyzed because she can't support him but she can't stop him. Repudiation would be a strong thing for one who is little more than an idiot (or fathead as Savil refers to him as), but why wouldn't something similar have happened to Gala? On the issue of criminality, even after Lores admits that "Ghost" is in fact a Companion and not a demon, he still considers Tashir to be a murderer. Vanyel yells, "Damnit, Companions don't Choose murderers!" (or something similar) Lores oh-so-tactfully replies, "But Gala did!" To which Vanyel replies, "But that was after." (sorry my quoting is a little off, I don't have the book right in front of me.) Okay, just my contextual additions to the repudiation and criminality discussion. The image recalls memories of when she was a child, and would play with dragons in their realm. _I'll go over and speak to her_ Adrienne thinks to herself. _It has been a long while since I've spoken with a dragon._ So, Adrienne makes her way to the corner, bringing sheep that will lick the dragon clean of the jelly and some towels in the shape of sheep, just to make sure she is no longer sticky. **** Have a good day! "Sorry for not introducing myself properly! I am Yvonne Shadowshape!" Yvonne bows slightly from her place in the tree, her dress rustlig slightly. "And I do like the sea part - but the rest of it is just as important. And if my eyes are not decieving me - THERE'S A NEWBIE! Care to join me in my dreching? It's a tough job for just one little person like me. I would be honored if you would help!" With that, another bucket appears in Seashimmer's startled hands as Yvonne jumps down off her branch and races towards the building, obviously expecting her to follow. >Not that I'm sad to be here, of course...just startled! Well, >at least I came prepared for dancing! I'm all dressed up for a party, so >here goes!* She walks out into the light, expecting a good drenching, and >decides to just talk to whoever comes up to her *Hey, I'm still shy!* Yvonne slows her pace as she nears Dre... and suddely realises that Dre is shy! *Humm... maybe a dreching isn't what's called for...* With a slight frown of concintration, she flicks a dark reddish brown wet lock of hair out of her eyes and holds her hands slightly apart. Deciding to be a little less showy than she was when she made her arrival, Yvonne conjurs up a small, aquatic sheep who looks up at her trustingly with watery eyes. *Well, now that you are here, I guess that I had better present you to the appropriate party!* With that she scoops up the sheep in her arms (disregarding the fact that she is getting sopping wet doing so) and marches up to Dre. "Welcome to the Misty List, Listsib!" She says with a smile, her hazel eyes crinkling up slightly at the corners and a drop of water inching it's way down the side of her face. "I got the inkling that you were a wee bit shy, so I decided to forgo the usual drenching routine and present you with this." She holds out the sheep, who, upon seeing Dre, struggles to get out of her arms. Laughing, Yvonne lets it go, and it immediatly presses up againsed Dre's side, making her pants as wet as the Kelpie-Lady's dress. "Hope you enjoy yourself!" And with that, she disapears back into the croud, leaving behind a wet sheep and a puddle on the ground. >"Oh, bother, " Dax said, "I've missed everything! Where's A bucket of sea >water when you need one? My hair's a mess and my dress is muddy....and..." >she trails off, elf sense kicking in and overwhelming her snit. "Why I do >believe that some of my estranged children are in attendance. Well, quit >laughing and tell me where to change...." "Be careful what you wish for, Dax, because you may just get it!!!" SPLOSH!!! And with that (as well as total disregard of her safety - both Dax the Eternal and the Lady of the Water-Borne are fellow deities, after all, so why should she worry about divie retrobution?) Yvonne executes an elegant bow and walks back off into the dance. > Silly humans. SPLOSH!! "I don't believe that I have ever doused a dragon before." Says someone to Typo's right. She turns to find a short, slim, dripping wet Kelpie-Lady swinging a bucket between her hands. "Welcome to the Misty List! Hope you enjoy yourself - and while you're here, could you try to do something about my keyboard? The keys are sticking - especially the 'n' key." She smiles up at the bluey dragon before her. And then her eyes sharpen, seeing a familiar face in the croud, no doubt. "And I am very sorry for running off like this - but I really have to say hello! Goodbye, and hope I see you again soon!" With that, she dissolves into a puddle that seeps through the cracks in the floor and out of sight. Slowly Yvonne materialises out of a puddle on the floor, slowly, slowly, carefully, she creeps up behind her friend Sorana, the Goddess of Flions, and suddenly: " B O O !!!" In the particular case of IIPTNIG, if I remember correctly, Piers said that the book was like a sandwich where Piers was the bread and Misty was the center. It seems that Piers wrote the beginning and ending of the book, and Misty filled in everything in between -- although perhaps Misty's sections were written first (I don't know for sure). -- "Daddy, why do those people have to | Greg Wooledge use Microsoft Windows?" | wooledge-+AT+-kellnet.com "Don't stare, son; it's not polite." | http://www.kellnet.com/wooledge/ ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 1500 **********************************
