Yes, Van makes it a bit easier for Medren to get sick, but I always thought that was part of the Mage gift. For that matter, there are healing spells that use only the Mage gift (Kethry talks about them, although I'm too lazy to find textev), so Van could probably heal without having the channel for the healing gift open. >>I meant Staven who was Lendal's twin, whom he got into so much trouble with. and why couldn't all three Lifebond? I was a part of this list for a while, but that was, well, I can't even remember how long ago. At least a year ago. Anyways, I will introduce myself again, because I am certain there are many out there who haven't the slightest clue as to what I am rambling about. A warning there, I do ramble, a lot at times. I'm Becky. I live to dance, pure and simple. Dancing has become so much a part of me that I rarely ever stand still anymore, I am either doing tap dances, or leaping across a room. It annoys my parents to no end. :)But they'll survive. Most importantly, I love ballet. There is nothing at all in the world like dancing en pointe, it hurts, a lot at times, and my feet are pretty horrid looking, but to be able to dance as if floating above the ground, and balance on the smallest point in your foot, well, it's wonderful. I also love reading (obviously), especially Mercedes Lackey (Whoa! Bet you didn't see *that* coming?). ALso in the last few months, I have discovered Guy Gavriel Kay, this may be blasphemy on the list, but he is without a doubt my favorite author. Anyone who has never heard of him, you just *have* to go read his books. The Fionavar Tapestries (3 books, The Summer Tree, The Wandering FIre, and The Darkest Road), A Song for Arbonne, The Lions of AL-Rassan, and Tigana. I can't even begin to describe how wonderful these books are. Especially the Fionavar Tapestries, take my word for it, you will adore them. See, here I go rambling again. Told you I would. Okay, that's me in a nutshell. And I'm going to plunge right into the midst of things, apologies if I am stating something already said. ============================================ Someone wrote: (don't know who, I got a little snippy happy) > >>I meant Staven who was Lendal's twin, whom he got into so much trouble with. > and why couldn't all three Lifebond? I don't know, > though personally I'd be uncomfortable with it. > Lifebonds do not necessarily have to be relationships of love, and also, I do not think they have to be anything sexual. From what I recall when lifebonds were explained, love simply cements the bond, and if they don't love each other, they will be extremely unhappy. But I also do not think it says that the love has to be the sexual kind, although that is probably what happens most often. Apologies for not citing text evd, after reading all these books so many times, I begin to forget in which part of what books things are explained, because they overlap so much, I'll go searching before I go to bed tonight. Back to the point, just because someone may be lifebonded doesn't mean that they have to end up in a sexual relationship. You can love somebody, love them with all your heart, and not have it be a sexual relationship (think along the lines of parents and children, or even best friends) Pardon my ignorance, but why in the world would the three of them lifebond anyways? (This is what happens when one jumps into the middle of conversations :) One gets very easily confused) Van never met Staven. And sure, 'Lendel and him were twins, but they were not the same person, which is why 'Lendel was chosen, not Staven. SO why would Van and Staven lifebond? Alright, enough rambling. Yes, of course you can join. If you also wanted a chance at priesthood in the order it would probably help if you send me or ShadowBlade a story about how you made a stupid move in a game or how you won in a totally unexpected manner. ShadowBlade is putting together a web page for OOPS and she needs more chess stories . more story... ShadowBlade makes some kind of gesture with her fingers and mutters a few arcane words. Suddenly, ShadowWolf is no longer wearing the uncomfortable formal robes that he came to the hall of Mists wearing. Instead he is now attired in his comfortable black buckskin shirt and trousers. "Thanks 'Blade I owe you one." ShadowWolf tells her that he is growing fatigued from all the dancing. In reality he is feeling more than a little uncomfortable with all the sheep and strange wolves about in the hall. The reason is he is a shapeshifter that takes the form of a silver wolf at will (most of the time). At the moment, his wolfish side is growing more and more unmanageable. He doesn't know how long he can maintain his rapidly diminishing control. "Maybe if I go out into the garden I'll be able to contain myself." he thinks. As ShadowBlade moves back over to the DJ booth, ShadowWolf retreats to one of Cennyyd's prize winning formal gardens. ObMisty Are you sure there won't be a sequel to Fire Rose? It has an awfully good lead in for a second and maybe third book. Is Misty's decision to make it a "stand alone" the same reasons she gave for ending the Urban fantasy's? You should be getting private welcomes from at least one of the list's official welcoming committee members. I'm not actually on that committee *slight pout* and don't want to flood you with messages advising you on list matters, but I thought I'd answer a question that a number of people seem to have: the webpage of the Ring Story can be found at http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Vault/6573/lfr.html Ana Cotton has put it together on her website. I think she's still pulling it together, so some contributions might still be missing, but for the most part it's together. Just a quick scold -- if you want to reply personally to a post, be SURE not to just hit Reply -- we've had two obviously personal mails posted in 24 hours. Mistakes happen, of course, but thought I'd mention it for any of those who might have missed the last time it was mentioned. (Can't remember whether this admonition is offered on the Newbifest page?) Specifically, if you hit "Reply to Sender" or whatever your mail program offers, you're going to be replying to the list, not the individual who made the post. With that lead-in, I have to strongly, strongly urge anyone who hasn't yet checked out the Newbiefest to do so NOW ( http://www.ling.udel.edu/hyde/pers/misty/newbiefest.html ) *g* It'll not only help explain things like all the sheep running around here and some of the abbreviations and such (including explaining about the Knights of Amber and Marigold and some other groups), it'll also help you to learn what is most likely to get you flamed and just generally give you an idea of list etiquette (including some very good reasons for following etiquette ;-}). I personally recommend checking out the Lightbulb Joke concerning Discussion Lists on the Official Webpage of the Fluffian Order--it'll give you some insights into what older..er, long-term listsibs have experienced. (It's also funny -- it's so true!) And that's at: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Acropolis/4474 And a list has been started for people to contine developing the story started with the first Ring Ceremony, and FallenAngel is the one who pulled that together, so if people have questions, that's who you should probably contact (FA, is this right? or should it be Carson?). Also I'd like to jump in here and make a suggestion: I truly love the Ring Story and the NeverEndingParty that we're all in. (For Newbies, look at Archive # 980207-1481; that's where it all started. I responded, and then it all snowballed from there; you can find it all on Ana's web page, too.) We have, however, had people asking if we might cut back on the story - tho some of us drink up fiction and roleplaying and all the rest, not everyone on the list is as interested. So I think since the Story as it's developed is a form of fluff, I'd loke to propose that the Passing of the Ring perhaps be removed from our little character developments. I mean, it isn't integral to the Party and its inahbitants anyway. As far as the ring goes, perhaps we can just have a little weekly passing on of the ring, as ourselves, but using the Cennyd's words as we pass it on, then maybe making a comment on the listsib and his/her contributions. (So, when passed on, it could be like thanking Jenne for being a Disciple of Textevd and diligently tracking down textevd, or praising someone else's imaginative gifts to certain unnamed deitfies....) Thoughts? A bit of really OT stuff: I'd like to chime in on someone's (Rainbow's??) comment that the Ship Who... series needn't be read in chronological order. Shadowwolf', your list was great, tho you did leave out The City Who Fought. And Yes, Rainbow, it was Brendan and Boira (BB-1066) in Crystal Line, but don't forget Chadria and Samel (CS 914), who have a smaller role in Killashandra. :) Barbara -- Happy Birthday, and congrats on the new computer. I offer a tithe of one tonne of chocolate chip icecream to the Deity of Ty[posf and ask that Barbara's keyboard be left untouched by stickey-keys curses or other lesser typographical nuisances. Wanted to say that I agree (with ???) that Misty's real strength is character development. I think some of her stories move well, but some tend to move in fits and spurts. Of course, I'm so wrapped up in the characters, I rarely pay too much attention to anything else. (As my bookshelves will attest.) That's actually what's so great about having a whole span of hundreds of years -- she can interweave things so that, as a whole, there's actually great plot development, tho sometimes that development takes 4 or 5 books. IMHO. And it's interesting to hear that Piers Anthony's style varies -- I've only read a couple of his books , and they totally turned me off of him. I mean, I liked some aspects, but it felt like he was hitting me over the head with his humor -- I like a little subtlety. ShadowWolf said "The Xanth novels were fun at the beginning but how many puns can you endure." Amen. I love puns. Hell, my first fantasy was probably a M.Y.T.H. book. But...well, "me too" on the pun thing. Plus, he runs into the same problems as most male authors do when it comes to female characters -- they tend to be either two-dimensional and/or stereotypical of what men always claim women are (jealous, manipulative, etc.) Inspired me to stick to women authors a bit longer. (Oh, and feel free to recommend any men writers you like -- privately -- I'm not against male authors, I've just been rather consistently disappointed so far. But I'm always open...) Well. Okay, 'nuff for now. My phone got turned off for two days, and I'm feeling like it's been an eternity since I spoke with y'all, but there were only 36 messages waiting, so I guess it wasn't really that long. When you're lifebonded, your choices are limited to the things you both want, because if your lifebonded is unhappy, so are you. It takes two very strong, well established personalities to make a lifebonded pair wor, because if one is passive, he'll be eaten alive by the other.: "That doesn't sound very pleasant," Skif put in. "In fact it doesn't even sound--romantic. It sounds like a disease." Stefan laughed. "I don't know about a disease, but it isn't love, that's for certain, even though love usually cements the bond. Van thinks that it's likelier that someone with an extremely powerful Gift of some kind and a tendency to deep depression will be lifedonded than someone who is not so burdened and hag-ridden. Cennydd has been too busy with his real job to do a naming, and there hasn't seemed to be one who is reeaaallly worthy. <<> Hello all... > My name is Craig...I am new to the Mercedes Lackey mailing list...I have > been on the list about 2 weeks....This is my first posting...>> Megan looks around and catches sight of June and another Newbie whose name has just this minute been lost in the black hole caused by over active delete fingers Bad finger, Bad! Bad! She summons her wonderful Golden Retriever, Puck (who from time to time agrees to sink to the depths of sheepdog status ) who herds the three Newbies closer together where they simply mill around for a moment until POUNCE, POUNCE, POUNCE and Megan looks around with a satisfied grin. Welcome to the Misty list and all it's crazy ness.] Just to mention again, it would be good and informative for you to check the Newbie Fest at http://www.ling.udel.edu/hyde/pers/misty/newbiefest.html Of course if there are any questions, please feel free to Email me privately or anyone with the sig "Councilor of Mist". <> Femmy, while I don't presume to speak for Cennydd (Megan bows very solemnly to the Mage) I can tell you that the Ring was designed to add a spirit of fun to the list that seemed to have been missing for a while (guess you guys thought so too seeing how quickly it took off!!) It was never designed to take over the list. Since the party has been moved off list, I think you could feel free to pass the ring on without the party. I speak as the Councilor on duty for Sundays - I'm sure our esteemed Mage of Green Silence will also respond on his own. PS. Sorry for the truncated post that was sent. I had to rewrite all of this again. Luv to all, Megan Glitterglass ~Councilor of Mist~ (Master Glass Artisan) Assistant to the God of New Homes specializing in Neighborhood Welcoming Committees Knight of Amber and Marigold Knight of Fairgrove (in training) I don't know though. Cennydd started it in the Hall of MIST, so I don't know if it should leave the Hall and into the ordinary list or not. Cennydd? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Feb 1998 13:27:38 -0800 From: Niki Nibbe To: Mercedes Lackey Discussion Subject: Misc. textevd Message-ID: <34F09847.370FB39A-+AT+-earthlink.net> So here I am, trying to find textevd regarding lifebonding and "cemented by love" and instead am finding support for old arguments, probably long dead. Hope I'm not stirring anything up here, but wanted to correct myself. First, in one discussion I had referred to Companions as akin to avatars. In WoFate, Quenten calls them Guardian Spirits. That's really what I should have been referring to them as -- avatars by definition are serving one particular deity. If Companions are Guardian Spirits (tho either Gwena or Cymry tell him "you don't know the half of it" so they're probably even MORE -- hope somday Misty feels inclined to reveal all), that would make them a bit more independent than an avatar. But they're not simply reincarnated Heralds like Stef was reincarnated Lendel -- Quenten talks about being unable to bleach Companions "but I'm afraid the amount of magic energy they have simply by being on this plane is going to bleach them..." (WoFate p.183). And they're much more than, say, spirit Kal'enedral ("They were to this 'horse' what an eating knife is to a perfectly balanced rapier." p.174). Anyway, Guardian Spirits or not, they're still fallible. And on the tired subject of Lendel and his descent into madness and whether somebody should have known, at the very least his companion: In MPawn, p.173, Savil's thinking that Stef and Van might have lifebonded. When Kell checks with Yfandes, the reply is "She says probably; something as deep as a lifebond is difficult to monitor." So if Lendel's twin bond were like a lifebond, then we now can see that Companions can be in the dark about some parts of their Heralds' emotions. Then, in MPawn, p.182, we have "the ruse had worked admirably well;...She hadn't evidenced any signs that she thoght his recovery was taking overlong; she hadn't even broght in a Healer when Vanyel had tentatively suggestted (as a test) that Tylendel didn't seem to be improving that much. 'Backlash is a nasty thing, lad,' she'd said with a sigh. 'Takes weeks to bounce back from it...'" So whatever anybody sensed they probably chalked up to backlash; they simply didn't understand the twin bond and its pull. Lastly, there's been some talk about Lendel "getting" to come back...I'm not going to try to paraphrase all the arguments here -- don't want to misquote or misconstrue. But in MPrice, on p.188, Moonwind says "There are reasons, pressing reasons for this to have happened....There is a debt owed to Vanyel because of what happened. There is unfinished business because Tylendel failed as a Herald." Now, isn't reincarnation considered by some faiths to be ... not punishment, but at least not necessarily a gift. It's more like life is an ordeal to be gone through over and over, until at last you reach the Havens (or enlightenment). So for Lendel's spirit, it's like "do it again til you get it right." And as far as something being owed to Van -- sounds like things weren't handled properly with Lendel, or else he wouldn't be owed anything. So it looks like while I was going through Winds of Fate for lifebonding stuff, Reighvyn found it in Winds of Fury (I would have gotten there eventually -- it's just that whenever I go looking for texteved, I get drawn into the story at hand *chuckle* and so now I'm following Elspeth's quest for magic -- tho I'm sorely tempted to read about Vanyel's sad childhood.) I'd better just back away slowly and leave the textevd stuff to those who don't get quite so engrossed. ;-} Lady Niki, etc., etc. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Feb 1998 18:16:47 EST From: Javelin397-+AT+-aol.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Misc. textevd Message-ID: Hi! My name is Javelin and I'm new, but as I have difficulty in stopping talking I thought I would add my few pence worth. In MPrice, on p.188, Moonwind says "There are reasons, pressing reasons for this to have happened....There is a debt owed to Vanyel because of what happened. There is unfinished business because Tylendel failed as a Herald." and then Lady Niki wrote "And as far as something being owed to Van -- sounds like things weren't handled properly with Lendel, or else he wouldn't be owed anything." Which made me think, if it weren't for that Gate being fed back through Van, his channels wouldn't have been blasted open so he wouldn't have become a mage. So was 'Lendel supposed to have the place in destiny that Van occupied? 'Lendel says in MPrice that he can even see magic coming from rocks and only adepts could do that. Any ideas? A NEWBIE, June, yeah that was her, had right at the second POUNCE lept into the air to land on the back of the intensely working Lab.
