Yes, the Black Cauldron was an un-Disney-like movie. I, for one, was very distressed when this came out. My personal feelings about the Disneyfication of books are very strong - I think that Disney does wonderful work when it comes to P.D. fairy and folk tales, but manages to mangle and destroy every book it tries to turn into a movie. The Black Cauldron was book 2 in the Chronicles of Prydain (Book one being The Book of Three, followed by The Black Cauldron, Taran Wanderer, a title that escapes me at the moment, and The High King.) For the same reason, I am generally opposed to turning books into movies. I think that a series such as TLHM would be destroyed by Hollywood. It's at http://home1.gte.net/stasia/listsibs.htm so feel free to take a look and tell me what you think! I'm always open for suggestions, so if you have some, private e-mail them my way! For those of you who haven't heard about it, or are a little unclear about everything with this list, here's a little info... Basically, it started when Shadowdancer suggested we find a way to all meet, and then Brika suggested that we start a list of where we are all from. Cennydd quickly suggested that rather than clutter up the list with a bunch of one-liners, someone volunteer to be the recipient of all those one-liners and keep the list themselves. I just as quickly volunteered. And from that sprung forth this wonderful little list that I've been keeping. Not wanting to keep things simple, I, much later, also suggested keeping mini-bios of people with the list. I've finished making the list web ready, but it's far from finished. So far, I only have three bios listed. Anyway, the bios don't have to be anything much. Just whatever you want other to know about you. And, if you want to send a pic along for me to add in, I'll be happy to do that too. Or, if you already have a short bio and just want me to link to that bio, send the URL along, and I'll do that. Oh, and something else that you may want to add to your bios if you send them are URLs of home pages. If you have any questions about what you should write on your bios, just send me an e-mail, and I'll make some suggestions. I also had another thought. I can, for those that want me to, put a hyperlink on the e-mail addresses to make it easier to send mail if you see someone you want to send mail to privately. I won't change anyones e-mail addresses to "hot" until I get confirmation that you would like to have it done that way. Anyway, I hope you like the site and the list so far. If I've made any mistakes or somehow managed to miss someone, please, please let me know in private e-mail and I'll make any changes that are necessary. I'm usually called Vrondi on the Internet, but in Queen's Own I was Free Bard Oriole. (once upon a time). IRL I am Chrys Amy Dean. Misty fan extraordinaire for... geez, 8 years or so now. Since a friend first got a copy of the Arrows set. There we were, sitting in class reading the same book with pages sticking up between us. Ummm, I've been a Sci-Fi/Fantasy fan for.., well my whole life really. My parents raised me on Star Trek and Buck Rogers, etc.. (then Mom says "why do you read that bizarre stuff"). During my long abscence from the Misty List, I tried out several other fandom mailing lists, and I just want to say, Auntie Mel, no matter how hectic things get here, this list is about the best organized! I couldn't introduce the idea of Braiding very successfully other places! Ok, enough rambling. -Vrondi (Chrys Amy Dean) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Feb 1998 14:13:28 -0000 From: "Fallenangel" To: Subject: Re: Attractive Men/Assorted Comments/Friendship Ring Message-ID: <000a01bd4453$23878420$268185a1-+AT+-skkohnkedelta.edu> Mark wrote: Well... There is certainly no concrete, physical science explanation for this phenomenon, but, you do bring up something I had hoped would come out in discussion when I joined this group this week. Well, welcome to the group! This is something I've wondered about, but like I said, when I brought it up (at other places) I received some comments that were very insulting to Misty as well as those who are gay. (At one place I was temporarily banned because I had the gall to defend both. After a threatened class-action lawsuit by an outside party, I and a few others were unbanned, not that we ever returned.) Anawin are those who have suffered or been outcast by the dominating factions of society, homosexuals, women, the abused, the other-talented, etc. These people play an important role in pushing societies to change. I've never heard of this concept.... Is there a book or something that best describes this? It's very interesting... As to why so many of those men you find attractive are gay, perhaps it not just their physical beauty you desire, but their connectedness with something "other" that comes through... Well, you may have something here. It's also the .... well, sensitivity I guess is the word. A lot of the men that I know and have dated seemed to think that it wasn't 'macho' to share what they were thinking or feeling. (I know, this is a classic complaint) But Van wasn't afraid to say when he was afraid or when he was in love. Ana wrote on the same subject: Actually, I can think of a few: Deke Kestral, Tannim, Eric, Kory, the elf who was Kory's cousin, Keighvin, Daren, Eldan, Justin (Tarma and Keth's friend), Tantris, all of the Hawkbrothers, most of the Shin'a'in, the Kaled'a'in, ................... Okay, so I forgot a few. I was trying to point out individuals, though. Still, I made a oversight, and I apologize to all the straight attractive men in Velgarth that I may have offended! *grin* *wondering if I could move there.....* Tamlin wrote on the same subject: I agree that Vanyel is a beautiful person Yvonne Shadowshape, but mainly for who he is on the inside rather than his physical appearance, although I kind of like that too :). Just wanted to say that when I said attractive, I mean on the inside and outside. For me, personally, attractive is everything about a person, not just appearance. Just thought I'd clarify that. And I do want to say that I don't mean to offend anyone, I just brought this up because I thought it might be a good conversation. And I admire people who have the courage to stand up and declare that they are choosing an 'alternate lifestyle'. I just wanted to thank eveyone for all the birthday wishes. Yes my day was great. Also I wanted to thank everyone for the name ideas for my sheep. I have decided on Asari. I think that she approves of her name. I want to approach the subject of Vanyel being shaych as well. The first books that I ever read by Misty were the LHM series. I was fifteen and I must say that Misty was my first real exposure to the fantasy relm. I was impressed that she would use, at that time, a character with an "unacceptable" sexual preferance. I LOVED Van' and `lendel, I cried when `Lendel died, she made you feel Van's pain, I fell in love with Misty and her work in those few weeks. Her characters are so full of life and realism and I haven't found a book by her that I didn't like. I tell everyone to read her books. I hope that she never stops using the characters that she does and I look forward to every new release. Unfortunitely I have to wait for the paperback version of everything, you know the starving student deal. I must say that I agree that all of her more 'easy to fall in love with' characters are shach but I still love them all the same. Sorry this has gotten so long, but I just wanted to say my opinion. Welcome back! I've already wondered where you've been when I got back on the list a few months ago... :) Myself I just got resubscribed today, after being away a few weeks due to a computer crash (first a boot virus from my modem disks!!! and then a RAM-module failure - don't ask... good thing I'm hypotonic by nature, otherwise my bloodpressure would've been skyrocketing; and to add insult to injury, I got unsubbed in my absence!). Lost all the mails and all the other fun stuff (the .sigs... the saved digests with the taglines...) due to "format c:", the allegedly ultimate defense against viruses. :( Ok, so I need something remotely ontopic... :) With all that Jody Lee-bashing for the covers of LHM going around (at least last time when I was around here), I'm going to say something for her rehabilitation :). I don't even know if this topic has ever come up before. Apologies if it's been discussed before. Only recently did I notice the fine, nicely done marginals on said covers: blossoms on MPawn, fruits? on MPromise and finally, falling leaves on MPrice. I wish I was more eloquent (reflecting my title quite well :)) so I could express much better why I like them: It illustrates nicely the trilogy's cycle or progress. The blossoms symbolize Van's youth and the falling leaves impending death. But I'm not sure if I like to interpret the fruits as a symbol for Van at the height of his power, MPromise is just not that much of a climax to the series (never meant to be).
