Watching >them disappear, or watching them appear? Interesting question. (No, I'm not being patronising. *g*) Hmm. All righty, from here on it's all IMHO, and not intended as a general reflection of what everyone thinks, 'kay? =) I think it all depends on the writer. I guess I have to say that it's *easier* to show a not-so-good society moving towards something better, and it's also probably more popular because that tends to be what people want to read. (To sidetrack a little, it's a pet belief of mine that people read to escape the real world, and so it is the books that have happy endings and are basically different from our own world that do the best in terms of sales. *g* What do you think?) But if done well, I think a book about a society that's moving towards its own destruction is stronger stuff -- there's a momentum and an implacable-ness (new word there, please forgive the awful vocab *g*) to a plot like that that forces one to read on even though you *know* it's not going to end happy. I'd personally rather read a good book on the downward trend if I'm in the mood for serious reading, but if I want something to cheer me up (after an awful day of school, for example...*g*) I'd definitely pick something with a happy ending. Whew. I didn't mean to go on like that. Sorry. =) Another thing: the suicide issue with Talia/Tylendel. My two cents worth then (can you tell I'm very much 'the Lit student' at the moment? Blame Macbeth).. I don't think Talia was insane at that point when she attempted suicide. As one of the listsibs (sorry, didn't really notice who) mentioned, she was in a lot of pain and she was afraid of being used against Valdemar. That would probably have destroyed her; IMO she's one of the most loyal Heralds, and being used against her own would have broken her. I think Ancar and Hulda knew that and took pleasure in knowing it. Hmm... Tylendel was a different story. He *was* insane, I believe in that short period of time after Gala repudiated him. He'd just lost his Companion, the one who saved his sanity all that time ago when she Chose him; he'd lost his twin, whom he loved so much; it's possible he'd realised what he had done to Vanyel, his lifebonded, and he couldn't take all that pain and guilt. The easiest way out for him was suicide. That way he didn't have to deal with all that pain. Ok, now here's a not so nice question prompted by all this talk about suicide. I find myself thinking sometimes that suicide is the coward's way out (usually when my friend's talking about it and terrifying me). You don't have to deal with any problems after you're dead. (Though you leave behind people who care and are devasted by your death.) At other times I think it's a perfectly normal way to end the unbearable pain (usually when *I'm* thinking about suicide). What do y'all think? Sorry about the length, and about the non-Misty content. But I just *had* to say it. =) Peace and chocolate flavoured sheep to everyone, Lady Windsong of Peace 'Come what come may, Time and the hour runs through the roughest day.' -- Macbeth, Act I Scene iii ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 05 Mar 1998 06:44:55 -0500 (EST) From: AERDEN-+AT+-delphi.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Grand Duke Tremane (Storms Spoilers?) Aside from Talia, Tremaine is my favorite character in all of Misty's books. She sat down, took time with him, and got to know him. I feel like she had mental conversations with him for a long time before she began writing him. Tremaine is solid. Not only that, he has a 'real' quality to me that many of her other characters lack. I don't know how to explain this, but...to me, there are characters in books who are just characters (99 percent of them), and then there are characters in books who are 'real.' Tremaine is 'real' to me in a way that even Talia is not. I could read about him and be utterly absorbed all day. Let's see, no i cant think of any other reasons offhand...hmmm....I do think we all love Misty's heroes and heroines whatsoever the book may be...Be it Tannim or Talia, MacLyn or Darkwind, the main characters and supporting cast are fascinating(and yes the Bardic books are too! Cyrene: >I haven't noticed any real discussion on the Serrated Edge >or Urban Fantasy books. Is there a reason for this or have I missed it? Well, the reason I got when I asked this...let's see, 1 1/2 ago....was that Misty just hasn't written as many of these books, so there's nothing to discuss. I also really like the Bard's Tale books and the Free Bard's books, but there is little discussion on those either, (Except why is the church corrupt). But I think that its about time that some discussions take place about them as there are 13 UF, SE if you count Sacred Ground Elven Dude and the Dianna Books, which all tie in. And there are only 14 books in Valdemar if you don't count Oaths and Griffon, because they don't happen in Valdemar. And Misty is writing more SEdge. So, if you want to discuss any of the other books, all you have to do is bring up the topic and what you are interested in discussing. You can discuss any of her other books as well, I liked Freedom Flight, The Elven B's, If I Pay Thee Not, Really well too, Haven't gotten the chance to read some of the new stuff. I of course, have to push all the Elven books because I'm the Goddess of Elves (on the list, see newbie fest for info). People need some labels so that concepts can be conveyed. > And "alternative" is the nicest one I know of. I think John's objection was to the wording "alternative lifestyle" which implies that the "lifestyle" is alternative. Lifestyle is an all encompassing word which includes where you live, how you live, what you do, what you eat, how many friends you have, etc, etc as well as "who you have a sexual relationship with." At least when I think of the word "lifestyle," I think of the entire set, not just one element of it. Just because a person has a preference for people of his/her own sex doesn't mean that their entire lifestyle is different because of their sexuality. (Although arguably sexuality is a very important part of someone's life and certainly has an impact on other elements of their lifestyle). By your definition of alternative lifestyle, anyone who has an element in their lifestyle which is "different from 90% of the population" is living an "alternative lifestyle." I've been a vegetarian for around eight years which is certainly different than a majority of the (American/European) population, and I suppose that I could be labeled as having an "alternative lifestyle." Perhaps that labeling is justified, but I certainly don't feel very "alternative." :) My point is that wording and rhetoric are extremely important because they are the main ways that we communicate with each other. It's important to examine the implications of our phrasing before we blindly use them because they are more polite than "them thar faggots." > > Anne McCaffrey sent out an declaration to all her fan clubs stating > > which sexes and sexual prefrences could ride which color dragons. I'm not gay myself, but from most of the accounts that I've heard, many gay people can "perform" with members of the opposite sex. (They just might not enjoy it very much) As for Pern, I don't think the question is whether the _dragons_ are homosexual. The issue is the _riders_ which are "allowed" to be homosexual on Pern. Certainly the green dragons with homosexual riders are heterosexual themselves. I think that it's a valid point to note that the only homosexual riders are those of the "lower" dragons and never the leaders of the weyr. Anne is a very gifted story teller and can be considered very progressive for even implying homosexuality in her books as early as she did, but she ain't perfect. (Don't even get me started on her portrayals of women.. this is a Misty group, afterall :) ) Anyway, sorry for rambling so offtopic.. I fully understand why she isn't writing more of them, and I'm glad we got the ones we got. But there's still part of me that would be ecstatic if she was ever able to write more Di books. Children of the Knight is I think the Misty book I re-read most often. You can look at my poor copy and see it's well-loved. I covered the covers with clear contact paper so that they wouldn't disentegrate. good policy for much loved paperbacks. Another thing I thank Tannim for is the introduction to Tiger Balm. i found some, and this stuff is great. Now my family won't be without a jar or three int he house. -vrondi ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Mar 1998 01:56:54 +0000 From: "Vrondi" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Some questions I'd like answering - PLEASE? Then they split. But it was so long ago, they refer to one another as separate groups now. the hawkbrothers kept the Magic to heal the land, and the Shin'a'in stayed to guard the plains. Hope that was clear enough. > Where did Kerowyn LIVE at the beginning of BtS? Just wondering - please > answer tho'! She lived on her Father's estate. In, Rethwellan I believe. I may be wrong on that, since I have none of these books here at school with me right now. > Oh yes - and is she'chorn the Shin'a'in version of shay'a'chern? Just > wondering (again please answer!!!) Yes, from context, I'd say She'chorne is the Shin'a'in equivalent for Shay 'a'chern. i would check SUn and Shadow for you, but that tape is also, alas, not here at school with me. -Vrondi ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Mar 1998 21:07:51 GMT From: troll-+AT+-netcomuk.co.uk To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Rainbow's questions Message-ID: <19983521957541-+AT+-netcomuk.co.uk> 1) In my copy of BtS it's Sayvel too, and in Winds Sayvil. Perhaps it's Misty's way of making it more obvious that it's Savil in reincarnated form? :) Or perhaps Misty actually made a mistake (shock, horror) 2) Tarma's kin, into whom Kethry became adopted, were Shin'a'in. They were the Shin'a'in Clan Tale'sedrin, which although they are the Hawk Clan are NOT the Hawkbrothers. The Hawkbrothers are the Tayledras, and consist of multiple clans. To complicate the issue further, at the time of the original split(mentioned in Winds of Fate, page 298)the Clans who wanted to keep magic called themselves Taylesederas(fairly similar to Taylesederin, the older name of Tale'sedrin)before shortening it to Tayledras. The Clans who did not keep magic were given the name of Shin'a'in by the Goddess. 3) Yep, Jasan is probably Jaysen and Sofi is quite possibly Sofya. 4) At the beginning of BtS, Kerowyn lived at her father's keep, which I assume was somewhere in Rethwellan, considering that Kerowyn immediately recognised Daren as the heir to the throne of the land. 5) Yes, she'chorne is the Shin'a'in equivalent of the Tayledras shay'a'chern. Fairly similar, which isn't too surprising since both languages are offshoots of Kaled'a'in. I'd like to add to April's list. Not too long ago, there was some discussion of these books on the list. You could try the archives if you are interested in seeing what was written. I'm sure that if you have something to say about them, you could bring it up and it would eventually get discussed. I know that some stuff that we have discussed recently is re-hash for those who have been on the list for a long time, but they put up with it, and us newbie's (well, I guess I'm not so new anymore) get to talk about stuff we haven't gotten to yet. Is there a reason for this or have I missed it? Ok, Dax did a great job of addressing this, but I had to get my two cents in. There isn't too much that is proscribed on this list. If there's a topic you're interested in, throw it out there and see if it takes hold. (But if you're unsure about the topic or its content, check the newbiefest page -- it only takes a minute to avoid baelfire and a flaming.) I do think that the large focus on Valdemar might reflect a) the emotional bonds we've developed with all things Velgarth over 10 or 15 books -- seems a lot of people started with these books and were hooked from day one -- or b) the small discrepancies or questions raised by an aouthor's attempt to chronicle over a hundred years of history, and to jump around from character to character. There's probably plenty of other reasons, too. I've read the SERRAted edge and Tregarde stuff and enjoyed it, but it's always been as a filler to keep me in Misty books til the next Velgarth arrives. IMHO *ducking her head to avoid flames by any die-hard Serra fans* these books aren't as emotionally gripping. This might not be true across the board *thinking HARD to remember if I'm forgetting something* but in general there seems to be a much more emotional attachment to Vanyel or Talia or Elspeth or Tremane (yeah, I loved him, too -- kept hoping that the next chapter would get back to him! And yes, part of the attraction was that he was discovering that his view of the world was limited, and we got to see some conflict that wasn't based on "does anybody like me" or "do I deserve to live" or "does he/she really love me"?) Now, the Bard books did grip me that way, or at least the first one did (still love the whole thing with Death on the hill). The whole thing about being denied the chance to make music (and, yes, being a girl on top of that) was just as gripping as it was in Dragonsong. Oops, getting OT here... So I guess my point is similar to that made by Dax -- if you want to see a discussion, as a question, make a point (and the more outrageous or extreme your ideas, the more responses you'll get!) and see if anybody nibbles. And don't be discouraged -- if nobody does respond, try again in a couple months, and you might still hook somebody. Actually, if anybody's still with me after all this rambling *g*, this brings up another point I'd like to make for all the newbies we've been getting lately ...oh, POUNCEPOUNCE to all those I've not welcomed recently ... It seems that every once in a while somebody throws out a topic they think is really neat, and nobody responds immediately, and their feelings get hurt, or they get worried that maybe they offended, or any multitude of misconceptions. Keep in mind that the more sophisticated your question, the better the chance is that busy listsibs have saved your question for, say, next Tuesday when they have a day off to properly respond....Well, you get the picture. Sometimes people get busy and even end up not responding to a topic they really like. Or maybe you're bringing up something that was done-to-death right before you found the list (once again, check NEWBIEFEST for some done-to-deat topics -- keeping in mind that whenever we send people to look at this list, it seems someone comes back and says "hey -- thanks for sending me to the done-to-death stuff; that's exactly what I want to talk about," and so the discussion will startall over again). ...oh, dear. Rambling again. sorry. ... Point being, don't get upset or worried if nobody answers your question -- hey, if it's in the middle of a post, some speedy readers might have missed it, even. So buck up, and try again. Yikes. Seems I always respond to the last post I read, and never get around to dealing with the others I've been meaning to get back to (as in 154 messages in my inbox! yikes.) For the listsib who was asking about volume of mail: though it varies from day to day, I've never received less than 12 mails in a day, and never more than 50. So check your friend's computer as often as possible! Warm, fluffly, lavender-scented sheep for your pillows, and silly, playful sheep to pick you up when you're feeling low. It even got me to delurk in who knows how long:) First off as a disclaimer of sorts I need to say that I am not in anyway advocating suicide as a solution but rather attempting to understand the motivations behind someone who decides suicide as the only way out. I don't agree that everyone who attempts or succeeds in committing suicide are insane. What I do think is that coming to the decision that suicide is the only way out is a very personal and individual conclusion. For example Lendel committed suicide b/c IMO he was insane (temporarily insane IMHO)...he was overcome with grief, guilt and hordes of pain. However Talia decided to attempt suicide for very different reasons. While I agree that she had suffered great amounts of pain at the hands of Hulda and Ancar I don't think that was the primary motivation in her decision to kill herself. She attempted to kill herself b/c she was trying to protect Valdemar and the ppl she loved from risking themselves for her safety. When she finally decided to take the poison she had given up all hope and believed that her only choice was either to be killed slowly by Ancar or take the Argonel and die quickly. Talia was not in any sense of the word insane when she decided to do this. There are also other cases where ppl decide suicide and are not insane. Ppl with terminal illnesses sometimes will opt for a quick death in order to avoid the pain and suffering involved in a long disease process. While I do think that some ppl who decide to commit suicide are out of touch with reality there are many ppl out there who are not. When looking at the person who attempts suicide one must take into consideration the underlying factors around such a decision. **************************************************************************** Cyrene wrote: > I haven't noticed any real discussion on the Serrated Edge > or Urban Fantasy books. Sometimes we just need to be prodded into talking about stuff*g*. I personal haven't gotten a chance to read the Serrated Edge or Urban Fantasy books but I always like hearing about them...makes me want to go and read them (tho I don't know if I should be adding any more books to my tbr pile:) However I have read the Di Tregarde books and really enjoyed them. I would have to say that Children of the Night is my fav out of the three.
