Allian never had much trouble with water. Alestra smiles at Yvonne. "Thank you for the ... wet greeting, friend. I've always been partial to water. But how could I refuse the loan of what is considered by some to be the most useful object in all the universes combined? I'd appreciate indeed the towel."* Hello, folkses, I realized that I'd forgotten some of the things I'd intended to mention last time... just as well, cuz it was getting long. In response to the question if anyone else writes... I write a great deal- I've finished one book that I hope to do some major editing on and try to get published- you can recognize it by the tiger;). If you see a book with a telepathic tiger named Allian, you'll know I succeeded. I'm also about 80 pages into the sequal. My first Misty book was Born to Run, I think, which still numbers among my favorites. If I could meet any of Misty's characters it would be Tannim. On the other hand, the one that made me feel the most... if we're talking Misty, I'd have to say Magic's Price. I still cry every time I read it, and I must've read it a dozen times... Non-Misty... I'm not sure, but I think perhaps that would still be the first book that ever made me cry was Patricia McPhilip's The Forgotten Beasts of Eld. When, at the very end, *****SPOILER***** the girl set all the beasts free, and her son wasn't with her, and the prince wasn't with her and she was utterly and completely alone and- and- and- *****END SPOILER***** Sorry bout that- that one still gets to me. *Tries very hard, to think of anything else she was going to mention, and glances at Allian for help. Fur ruffles in a tigerish shrug, and she hears him reply, amused, that he's never been much good at helping her remember stuff. With a sigh, she gives up.* Ah well- more memories will bring more notes. Fare thee all well for the moment. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Mar 1998 22:24:28 EST From: shadowspun-+AT+-juno.com (Heather A Tomlinson) To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: usenames/pets/books/Owlsight/Di Message-ID: <19980313.222324.6375.1.shadowspun-+AT+-juno.com> This is going to be very short, all. I've noticed something about our usenames, 5 by my count use Shadow in their name (not counting Shadow Lover, who seems to have disappeared during my "sabbatical") There are many Ladies, which I count to the Mage Wars, which also seem to have ended during my absence. Who won? If I'm opening up a kettle of worms, forget I said this. I really don't feel like being flamed so early in my reincarnation. Oh, and what the heck is a Dax? The only Dax I know of is Jadzia & I didn't think it kosher to be talking Trek here. I'm not even going to count the people who either have cat in their names or have cats as their pets/bondmates. Do we all just think alike or is there an unconcious acceptable usename list here? Speaking of pets, maybe I should get one. All I *really* have is a quad of guppies which will not die. I used to have a frog, who was *supposed* to eat the guppies, but Thaddeus has been gone for a year almost now. *sniff* I miss my baby bullfrog. As for romances, I have tons of them. I prefer either Harlequin/Silhouettes, which are usually light, quick reads; the sorta homespun (ie. no major sex count, love triangles, murder/incest plots--although sometimes the high sex count books can be fun if the author writes the characters right.) books like Pamela Morsi, Jude Deveraux, Julie Garwood; and the quasi sci-fi, futuristic, time-travel, supernatural books. They can get interesting. The futuristics usually have a high sex-count, but some of the worlds they create are interesting. It really depends on the author and publisher. Oh, and I'm presently ticked off at Jude Deveraux. Wrote her a letter and everything. They're charging $7.50 for her book, which is 1/3 shorter than the last five books she's put out. No way. I even told her I'd get it at my used book store where she wouldn't get a cut of the profit at all. And yes, if you haven't been able to tell yet, I'm thoroughly nuts to boot. I now have a notebook right next to the computer to right down all of the titles and names of books that sound interesting that y'all are saying. Just so everyone knows, the next Valdemar book coming out is called Owlsight. It'll be released in hardcover in October at $21.95. Owlflight will be coming out then in paperback at $6.99. Where were these listed? I just looked and couldn't find them in the front of Owlflight. Was it another book? I know there were two others slated before the "debacle" that ended Di's life; Arcanium someting and another one with Triangle in the name, I think. Well, that's all. It's late. Star Trek is going to be on soon. Can't miss that. ABout the first fantasy book.... have anyone read this series about a young boy being trained as a magician in some court? Umm... I can't remember much, but I _do_ remember that in the last book, he had to create this persona for his king/prince and found that it was easier holding the illusion than per usual. Later, he accidentally kills this bad guy (too great levin bolt), jolting the guy back into the throne, breaking his neck by pure inertia. Then his "Prince" comes up and the illusion fades to reveal his mentor? And he realises that it was easy cos there already was an illusion in place. I was going to stay out of this, but the memory it called up won't leave me alone. Setting the scene: I am somewhere in my teens. Old enough to have a lot of free time in the summer, not old enough to have a job to take it up. Indulgent parents who let me sleep late and stay up, and not force me to do something productive (read: they let me read a lot). Big oak tree in my front yard which I would read under, or in. Great sunny summer day. I hit Lord of the Rings at just the right time to get emotional impact from it. I read about Lothlorien under my tree. I put the book down. Looked up into the branches, with the sun shining through and the wind blowing gently and knew I had all day to stay here, just laying in the grass if I wanted. The forest was as close as I wanted it to be, and the world was full of potential and reality was whatever I chose to make it. Magic. Perhaps it's not quite a reaction to a scene in a book, but if I hadn't been reading about Lothlorien in that setting and time I believe I never would have encountered that feeling. The other one (also young adult) I thought was called "Finch" and t'was about a girl (in England, I think, but not sure) who ran away from home to join a band... I have no idea how to say it, either, but I use either 'shay' with the 'ch' pronounced as in 'Bach,' or else 'shy' with the same 'ch' pronunciation. The base word is 'shay'a'chern,' though, so maybe the 'ch' is pronounced the same way it is in English. It is a complete mystery to me. :) Chantal, aka Aerden ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Mar 1998 18:16:24 EST From: shadowspun-+AT+-juno.com (Heather A Tomlinson) To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: submissions/MIsty awards/exodus/books/Owlsight/dreams Message-ID: <19980314.181508.6375.0.shadowspun-+AT+-juno.com> Terrae, if your stories are female sword and sorcery, write MZB's S&S (sorry, Marion Zimmer Bradley's Sword and Sorceress) for submission guidelines. After all, she's helped launch one of our favorites. What are the Misty awards? What happened to cause the mass exodus? I asked the folks at B Dalton to look through BIPP for Baby Unicorn and the Unicorn Princess, but neither were found. Sorry. Try a library. If you find it, maybe you can write the publisher. That's what they wrote back. *grin* Gee, dreams that you end up thinking really happened. I've done that before. I never painted the ceiling of a mall, though. Just made my mom think I'm crazy asking her about conversations we never had. Me being crazy, you know, I don't think she's ever doubted it. Anyone ever have a dream where they're falling down a tunnel as geometric shapes fly by? Sorry, as I was writing that sentence I kept thinking about Chris Knight in Real Genius asking, "Is it a dream where you're standing in sort of Sun-god robes with thousands of women throwing little pickles at you...Why am I the only one who ever has that dream?" Mine is a real dream, btw. That and the one where there is a vampire standing either outside my window or in the corner, just staring at me. Now you know why I don't read horror.
