If he spends all his time out in the feild and the the time in haven just reporting to the Queen who would notice one more person in whites. Especially when he has been seen around Haven before but just seems to want to be left alone. He was more of a somewhat reluctant partner at first. Then I figure it was kind of like T&K. A balanced partnership, where both parties learn and grow in their personalities and work well and trust each other. As for Blue Heart, the Companions, as we've found out, are very good at keeping secrets from their Heralds. If it's not important enough for the Heralds to know or more important for them not to know, they will keep it from their Heralds. They may feel a bit guilty, but they will do it. As for Talia, I'm sure even in that case, the monarch has some duties that will be kept from even their closest advisors. What is the term? "executive something or other," I think. Okay, April-Jeanne Riverwolf. I'm not sure if I should wish you luck or hand you a shield. Hmm. Have to think on that. Tried Small already. Don't like her. Too much pass-the-girl-around plotting. For a good sex scene, I'd rather read Johanna Lindsey. Her characters argue so well. There's also Owlflight (and the next in that series -- Owlsight -- is coming out in Oct, I think). There's also Sword of Ice, which I think is a collection of Misty short stories set in Velgarth, but I'm not sure. Oh, and Oathblood, a collection of T&K short stories, just came out. Sorry, but, I have to do this . ME TOO!!!!! ME TOO!!!!!! I read while I walk between classes, and even generally avoid running into things. My friends tend to yell at me as they pass "Katie, put the book *down*!", but I just can't. I also read in class (I would never survive some classes, like physics and calculus, if I didn't), and I have become *very* adept at reading and answering questions at the same time. It's actually kind of fun , because most of the class doesn't get it when they pay attention, and they get really mad when I can pay no attention and still answer the questions. April-- I'm not really sure about fate, but it was a cool story. (Of course, maybe just because I'm mormon, and I can - kind of - relate . . .) Along the "dreams" line . . . I always seem to get dreams and reality confused. I'll see something and think "I know I've seen this before" -- I mean the *exact* same thing. (Yes, deja vu) Anyway, most of the time I figure out that I just remember the same scene from a dream -- I don't really remember the dreams, but I can look at the scenes and say what's going to happen next . . . kind of odd. Does anyone else do this? Just to add my two bits to the "shaych" coversation . . . I always pronounced it how it looks -- sh - long a - hard ch. I don't have any reason why this is right, but it's how I've always done it. As to the gay thing, though I had hope to put that to bed for a while :) the problem is that all of that is controlled by Ms. McCaffery. After all, she wrote the story. Gay characters are still relegated to secondary roles. Additionally, the characters are fairly stereotypical, unlike M.L.'s gay characters. The gay guys giggle and simper and are far more worried about having a tight little bod than about singeing some serious Thread. They cry at the drop of a hat and do stupid, irresponsible things. When you deal with the same group of people over and over again day after day, the little details in everyone's life takes on a whole new importance. Companions strike me as being REALLY gossipy... On a different topic... Am I the only one who isn't a huge fan of fantasy short stories? Now, I love Flannery O'Connor's short stories, and other contemp. fiction type short stories, but I really don't like fantasy shorts. I was so disappointed yesterday when I went to the bookstore and found two new ML books, only to discover that both of the were short story collections. So, I wound up buying "Shards of a Broken Crown" by Raymond E. Feist, instead. Oh well... Loved seeing all the ways we pronounce things. I was so Yes. I think part of the problem is most *good* fantasy is character, and not plot, driven fiction. In a novel length fantasy novel we get to not only meet the characters and share their adventures, but get to know them on a somewhat visceral and more compelling level. In short stories that same level of development just sin't possible, and to be honest most fantasy plots, except perhaps the grand novel length epics, just aren't that original. It's the characters that make them lovable. I find the same problems with some contemporary fiction short stories too, but O'Connor is different because she uses the actual language and not the events to make things interesting. (Of course, her events are so out there, they're pretty interesting too... _Good Country People_ is my all time favorite, but the short stories that eventually became _Wise Blood_ are pretty good examples of southern gothic as well.) (Hey, Cennydd, maybe it should be put into the newbie fest?) My priestess and Hand are correct. Dackory Ice was a RP character I had several years ago (an elf of course). When that game ended and another started, I missed Dack so much, that I made up another that was similar and changed the name a little to Dak. Well, that game ended and another began and.....well, I think you get the picture. But anyway, all these Daxes had traits in common, even when they changed and evolved, that was when, they became an arch-type, and when we started noticing that certain movies, TV shows and books, often had characters of the same arch-type, although rarely is there a "perfect" Dax. We also noticed that there were several unspoken rules when dealing with Dax arch-types and began coming up with the Dax rules. So, when someone "fits" the Arch-type mold I say they are a Dax. I have never seen the Dax on Trek so I have no idea if they fit the mold or not. It has been interdimensionally determined that all Daxes must be owned by someone. Not in the sense of slavery, but in the sense of responsibility. Because although some Daxes can take care of themselves, most are problems waiting to happen. Not in some malicious way, but things just HAPPEN around Daxes. Note, not all Daxes are named Dax. But they all share certain traits, ie. Heart of gold Tendancy to thieve Loyal when it counts Tend to stick with one person (their owner) Get into trouble even when standing still Tend to fall in love/lust alot Are usually scoundrels There are more, but I think you are getting the idea. Daxes include, Gabriel, Robin, Hercules' sidekick, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Korindell, FX, Skiff, etc. So, that should clear everything up! Oh, for anyone interested, there is part of a story about a Dax on my homepage (plug, plug). *************************** Shadowspun: >As for romances, I have tons of them. They can get interesting. The futuristics usually >have a high sex-count, but some of the worlds they create are >interesting. It really depends on the author and publisher. I don't have quite as many as I used to, but still have quite a few, I like the old Harlequins, because they don't have sex, so they have to have a plot and descriptions, I learned about more foriegn places that way. I also like the "Alternative" ones, I have said to myself several times that I should write some, since I love to read them so much, there have been some fascenating worlds and character types. One was about a race of mermaids, and one, the guy was an alien who seemed like a vampire and one he was a vampire who's sould had been split and one the girl was an elf with amnesia, and one the guy was a cat-like alien, and one the girl was this alien-mage fire dancer, and....... ****************************** Alestra Ilevrienne: >(imagine a cistine-chapel-type-dream where, >rather than painting the ceiling of the cistine chapel you're color >penciling the ceiling of a large mall... and have to have it done by >Monday...). Hey, another CP artist! Do you belong to the CPSA? I'm the secretary for our local chapter. I keep a copy of our monthly newsletter on my site as well as a piece or two of CP art (another shameless plug). But the ceiling of a mall? *Shudder.* *************************** Early Books: My earliest books were horse books, anything with horses in it, (When I was in third grade, I read over 300 books in two months for the summer reading program at the libraryh, most were horse books), till I was....9, I think, t hen I started reading my parents Sci/Fi...Heinlin, Clarke, etc, in between horse books, I remember Narnia, early on too. Then came romances inbetween Sci/Fi, fantasy, now, its mainly the SF/F and RP modules/rule books, with occaisonal romances and rarely, some other stuff. *********************************** Shaych: I don't pronounce alot of things out loud, so sometimes I'll have had a pronunciation in my head for ages, never thinking about it, auntil someone askes, how do you pronounce it, or I use it in a sentance (other words besides Shaych) and Carrach looks at me really strangely, then we pull out the dictionary....we also have dictionary wars on the meaning of words. Any who, I always pronounced shaych in my head as: Syke or Shyke or Sych. I know, doesn't seem to have any correlation with the word....I think its because I learned to sight read instead of reading by pronunciation. But, for the record, I think that those who say sh-long a-ch are right. ************************************ Lisa, Claude and Uni: >My nickname is "Book" of >"bookworm" as I read EVERYWHERE - including while I'm walking! - has >anyone else developed this habit or the one of reading in class, then >when caught being able to tell the teacher what he'she was talking >about??? if so I'd be interested? Yep! guilty on both accounts. I was called "Walking Encyclopedia" and "Bookworm" throughout grade school, though the nickname (not the habit) wore off by highschool. I usually devoured 1-3 books a day, besides school books. Don't have time for that anymore. Yes, I speed read. Oh! by the way, on the topic of not remembering/not noticing things in books and life....The day after I wrote the post about it, I was eating soup and when I got done with the bowl and handed it to Tamber to take to the sink, I suddenly noticed that it had a HUGE chip out of the rim and started looking for the broken piece. Well, she said that it had been broken for several days. I had eaten the whole bowl of soup and never noticed...... ****************************** Shadowblade: >ObMisty: ever wondered about the odd Herald in Blue Heart? How come >nobody(not even Talia, it seems) knows about him? I mean, his Companion >_must_gossip right? with the other companions? wouldn't their Heralds know >about it? esp those concerning another Herald? I always wondered about that, how could people not know...unless the other companions keep people from knowing, thinking it would contaminate the other Heralds to know? Even the page seems confused in his presence (like a forget command was being violated), people would just justify seeing him, like they did Gwena. I was also disappointed with the story not matching the back blurb. I think it would be interesting to know more about his actual job. Also, it seemed to intimate that the girl and the Companion were the same, yet that would be a violation of reinc rules, since the companion was male. But, it would answer the question of whether non-Heralds could be reinc as Companions. ************************************ April-Jeanne Riverwolf, Disciple of Textevd,Hall of MIST: Good luck, and .....*slow grin*......Fate does happen......No, really, Carach and I met at work and 6 weeks later we were married, four kids and almost 8 years later, we are still happily married. If asked I would say we have a life-bond, and while we have many of the same interest in books and in life, we also have many that are different. If ya want to talk to someone about him...private email me at tntgray-+AT+-sprintmail.com (P.S.- I'm Mormon) ****************************** Well, there you have it....... My nicks are still "Bookworm" and "walking, talking dictionary" and i still walk while reading, and yes I have dreams that happen, very specifically I will dream that I play an RPG before it exists, and then I will play it, or I will dream a conversation~since I am like misty in that without glasses, we would be blind, I rarely dream things I see...unless it is really close to me! I am always forever saying "this already happened", just ask my family! I take it as a sign that I am still on the right track with my life, or as a warning not to do something...dont know which yet, and Ive been dreaming like this since I was 5, so? I really don't know! Which Magic Knight Rayearth is most kawaii or sugoi? Ooops sorry...that just intruded itself into my thought. Lalalala...humming innocently....not hitting any notes... Question Spoiler Spoiler Spoiler S P O I L E R ! In the very end of Storm Breaking, it says that all the Gaurdians who were all spirit fared better than the Physical ones, ending in the death of nearly all the Gaurdians except for Altra. I wanna know why? Whahhhhh! I was really beginning to like Florian and Need, of course! What is Misty going to do without a talking sword? E N D S P O I L E R Also does anyone think that the Winds/Storm characters are going to get dropped like Talia did? making an occasional apperance in this book or that but not really involved in the storyline at whole? Or do you think its going to spread Companions across all the countries? Or do you think its going to be (spoiler sort of Tremane/Hardorn and The Iftel people) up against the Empire...Ours is not to wonder why? but im insanely curious! anybody else?
