I wanted to know if anyone has started a serious story in the circle that anyone could add onto. It would be neat to compile all our styles into one and seriously see what comes of it. Also, has anyone read the Elvenbane series, I think it was a good calaburation between Norton and Lackey. If one has not read it. I think it is awesome. I have read both books several times. Does anyone have any idea when Elvenborn is due out. It is the third book in the series and is due out anytime now. I cannot wait. (Heartsong jumps for joy and sends out a warm thought of hapiness and joy) I love this list and all the people on it are so cool. I finally have people I can discuss my favorite books with. SMILE. I think I'm a little confused right now. On the subject of picking up more from books you read as a kid, that you are rereading now: does anyone else have this happen? I'll be reading a book (for example: the Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy) and all of a sudden it'll hit me: oh that's what that means! And it'll be something I didn't pick up when I was ten, but that I get now (at the ripe old age of 21 ;>). --------- As for the way I pronounce Shaych: I pronounce it sh-long A-hard ch. *But* I pronounce Shay'a'chern: with a *soft* 'ch'. And I pronounce She'chorne, with a hard 'ch'. Ah well, part of it's 'cause the English language is so screwy, and I automatically give the letters the English equivalent. It's a couple blocks from our house, and one day I look up from the book I was reading and said to my mom:'Hey, National is closed!' She gives me this strange look and informs me it had been closed for about a month! Must'a been 'cause I read lots, and don't pay much attention to things around me. It was, in fact, the first fantasy book I've ever read. I was looking through the Science Fiction Book Club's catalogue, and read the description and thought "This actually sounds farely decent." So, I ordered it, and when it finally came in, I couldn't put it down. I ordered Storm Rising, and waited anxiously for Storm Breaking to be released. While I waited, I read LHM, (which happens to be one of the three books(hey, it's between two covers, it' a book!) that I've read the most, all of twice (I'm always reading new stuff, never have enough time), the other two being Conqueror's Pride and SW: Heir to the Empire, both by Timothy Zahn.) and loved that too, even more, in fact. I proceeded to collect and read all of her Valdemar books, loving each and every one of them, although I was a little dissapointed with Mage Winds, I wished she'd spent more time on the war with Hardorn, the times she did bring it up were some of the best parts of the books for me, like when the mages were orgranizing, etc, and I'd expected Elspeth to be leading an army through Hardorn. I wasn't too impressed with either Falconsbane or Ancar, either, I had loved her discriptions in Mage Storms, and they didn't come anywhere near my expectations, oh well. BTW, sorry all of my posts are coming late, I'm QUITE far behind on my email (over a hundred) and never find enough time to take a serious chunk out of them. So, I read them and respond when I have the time. -TechnoDon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Mar 1998 14:38:52 -0700 (MST) From: Adrienne R Metz To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: sheep Message-ID: On Sun, 15 Mar 1998, Shadowdancer wrote: > ******************** > > Lisa, Claude and Uni Wrote: > >P.S what is the deal with the sheep?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? > > This is a joke that is in the last lines in Magics Promise. > > Textevd: > > "You know," Jervis raised on eyebrow, "your father still don't half > believe but what you were after Tashir's tail the whole time. Very quickly, I think that the "unsolicited emails" messages was probably due to someone being signed up by accident to the list while having some sort of "spam filter" running. From the look of things, the problem has been dealt with, but if it is simply in abeyance and returns, I encourage everyone to have patience and let us fix it without everyone sending messages to the list asking "what is this?" and telling the person to stop. BTW, re: the pronunciation of she'chorne, the Tayledras cognate shay'a'chern, and its derivative shaych: I would be wary of accepting the pronunciations given in OBreakers. Misty's pronunciation guide, and her word-by-word pronunciations don't match up. According to the pronunciation guide, "she'chorne" should be pronounced [SE?COrnE], where S=the 'sh' sound in 'hush'; E=the 'e' sound in 'bet'; ?=the glottal stop in 'uh-oh' and 'button' (some dialects); C=the 'ch' sound in 'church'; and O=the lax 'o' in 'bore' or 'coal.' The Tayledras word, which probably was the origin of "shaych" should probably be pronounced [Sej?a?CErn], where ej=the tense American English diphthong in the word "day" or "Kate." If this is indeed the source of "shaych" (and Misty certainly intends it to be), then the pronunciation would plausibly be [SejC], by deleting the unstressed medial syllable. This is a plausible choice since the [?a?] contains segments that are not phonemically present in Valdemaran (assuming that Valdemaran is like English). In the absence of any evidence, I would be reluctant to assume that shortened forms undergo base-final spirantization (which is the only way to account for an 'sh' pronunciation at the end of 'shaych'). And that is my ObMisty. Oh, and btw, to those who asked, the origins of the sheep stuff on the list was not directly related to the sheep references in LHM, but rather to an unfortunate incident involving the redoubtable Lady Reesa, Close Personal Friend of Many Sheep. =) If you want to know the fully skinny, check out the NewbieFest at May the seas be your solace and the forests a refuge for your spirit, Cennydd Councilor of Mist Kenneth Allen Hyde | No matter how subtle the wizard, a knife Univ. of Delaware | between the shoulder blades will seriously Dept. of Linguistics | cramp his style -- Old Jhereg proverb kenny-+AT+-Udel.Edu | A mind is a terrible toy to waste! -- Me //www.ling.udel.edu/hyde/prof/ken.html ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Mar 1998 19:31:00 -0000 From: "FallenAngel" To: Subject: ESP Message-ID: <001c01bd5112$23cadb00$2f7d1b26-+AT+-skkohnkedelta.edu> YES!!! She can't pronounce the words herself. At Dragon*con, she pronounced Shin'a'in as Shi-`neye-in. When someone asked her about the pronunciation of it, she said that she mispronounces it all the time, cause she can't do the glottal stops anyway. :) Mat Cat Person, Champion in Green, God | "Eldest, Fairest, and Fallen . . . of Procrastination, filk vector, | greeting and defiance." -- A wizard Heathen #149, and OoUL/L of tLotPW | upon meeting the Lone Power. mtimme47-+AT+-magic.hofstra.edu | "Magic does not live in the unwilling http://ada.hofstra.edu/~mtimme47/ | soul."-- Wizards' saying about magic ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Mar 1998 21:46:17 EST From: Ambyrglow To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Drenching/Winds/Reading Message-ID: << Sorry to take so long - I've been on a breif holiday, and with so many newbies, it's hard to keep track. This is actually the book I was refering to. I guess this is part of my difficulty with the characters - McCaffery has chosen to present a gay couple in stereotypical fashion - one is the man and one is the "woman" and wants a sentimental record of his partner. There is some development of these characters in the book - this is where I get my simpering, giggling and shallow thing from. I agree with you that straight couples in literature and in life want rememberances of each other in case the unthinkable happens, but they are generally portrayed as equal partners. I am certainly not adverse to sentimentality, as I am a fairly sentimental guy myself. It is the ineffectual and effete portrayal of gay men that I object to. >I find the same problems with some contemporary fiction short stories too, >but O'Connor is different because she uses the actual language and not the >events to make things interesting. "Keys", along with "Turnabout", are both stories that appeared in Oathbound, the first being the story where Tarma and Kethry save Lady Corbie after she's been wrongly accused of murdering her husband... Tarma buying time by becoming Her Lady's Champion in a fight until her death with whosoever in the town that wishes to go against her, and Kethry using magic to find out how to solve a locked room murder mystery... a murder that was committed WITHOUT the use of magic. The second story is the story of the song "Threes". Those are the only two stories that repeat themselves from any of the previous to T&K books. There are also 2 new stories that didn't appear in S&S, if I'm reading things correctly. One is, of course, Oathblood, the other is "Spring Planting Time at Forst Reach". I think it would be hard for her to justify sending Companions/Heralds out over the whole world (which is so far only a portion of a continent). The Companions were created to help protect Valdemar, and while they have occasionally Chosen outside the country, ie. Alberich and Neave (the Herald in Talia's gifts class who sends her that horrible scene and finally clues Ylsa into the nature of Talia;s gift.), such a Choice doesn't happen often. For the Companions/Heralds to really spread their influence that over other nations, those nations would most likely have to become client-states, like Lineas-Baires was. Probably have to accept Valdemar laws. I don't see any of the present monarchs doing such a thing. I can see something like a UN, where forces from each of the Allied countries would fight against the Empire (which *does* have a name, btw. Kero calls it the Aurinalean Empire in BTS). Just like they did in WFury. In this case, the Companion/Heralds would be guests in the country they were fighting from. Sort of like heavily-armed diplomats. ;) I was rather ticked about Florian, too. I liked him. Of course, he'll be back. :) I wasn't aware there were basic rules about reincarnation. I always assumed the personality was the reincarnated part. Gender never mattered. I do think Companion Pilane is the reincarnation of the girl Pilane, though. It would explain his interest in butterflies very easily. After all, that isn't exactly a normal hobby for a Companion, probably. Of course, when are the Companions ever normal? :) Anne McCaffrey: I can't comment much on the gay thread, really don't want to, either. I can comment on the religion thing. I don't read her Pern novels. For some reason the only novels she's written that I like are her newest sci-fi series. The first is Freedom's Landing and the second is Freedom's Choice. There should be new one out soon. It's about a group of humans who are abducted from Earth and are basically dropeped on a planet to colonize it. If they survive, good. If not, the aliens who took them abandon the planet as a possible new home. She has mentioned religion in them. One of the things that struck me, and I'm not even Christian anymore, was that one of the characters (minor, just a mention really) was a Catholic priest and bemoaning the fact that he didn't have his usual paraphenalia to conduct services and one of the other characters comforts him and brings him around to the fact that he doesn't need them, just his message. I liked that. I actually did. And this from a deist. Go figure. Oh, also, on the subject of kids books. Anybody else read Animorphs? Yes? Yes? If so, what do you think? Okay, the rest is fluff. Ignore if you like. :) Yvonne: Hmm. And I thought selkies were cool?
