The general perception of mainstream society is > that gay relationships are predicated on sex is reenforced by characters > like this. > This is not "feminine" or even superficial in my opinion, but just reality. People always worry about superficial things...Van worried he was too old for Stefan, Dirk thought he was too ugly for Talia, and in the real world it's even more rampant. To say a portrayal of any character (gay or straight) is invalid or not deep enough because it doesn't ignore such surface difficulties seems to me to be just as superficial... But I will also say that I think one of the problems with ALL McCaffrey's alter Pern novels (perhaps anything after _Dragonsdawn_) is that she makes them so broad, with so many characters that we enver get beyond the superficial with most. The first Pern books (the Menolly trilogy) were by far the most in-depth portrayal of any character in the series. McCaffrey mentions some pretty shocking events (think Brekke) without ever giving us the kind of personal background that someone like Misty does... Although with Misty I see the same trend. The Vanyel and Talia books were very centered around those characters, but with the _Winds_ and _Storm_ books she has begun to focus on a diversity of characters, sometimes (not always, but sometimes) leaving me feeling unfulfilled in getting to really know the people as characters. Well, I've never heard the recorded versions, but I haven't been at all impressed with the lyrics as such. They all seem rather pedestrian and clunky, rather than having the sort of tight clean versification and form that one would expect in ballads and other song-forms. Misty is a great story-teller, but she isn't a very good lyricist since she tries to make her songs into "stories that rhyme" rather than "songs that tell a story." I mean by this that telling the story seems to be her main goal, rather than having a well-written song. Compare her songs to Childe songs or to any really good folk-forms and you will see that most songs only sketch out the story (in favor of a good versification, etc) rather than covering all the details. For example, Sun and Shadow would be much better as a first-rate short story (which Misty can do) rather than a somewhat clunky and (forgive me if you like the song) pretentious song. Certainly, none of the songs that Misty has included in her books have been particularly plausible as wildly popular and famous songs in Velgarth (unless Velgarthans have no developed musical tradition at all). Of course, since Misty is apparently no longer writing filk, maybe she already has come to this conclusion. =) May the seas be your solace and the forests a refuge for your spirit, Cennydd Councilor of Mist Kenneth Allen Hyde | No matter how subtle the wizard, a knife Univ. of Delaware | between the shoulder blades will seriously Dept. of Linguistics | cramp his style -- Old Jhereg proverb kenny-+AT+-Udel.Edu | A mind is a terrible toy to waste! -- Me //www.ling.udel.edu/hyde/prof/ken.html ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Mar 1998 16:30:04 -0600 (CST) From: "Terrae N. Some gays are like the ones she portrayed, Just like there are strait people that are portrayed badly in some books but it is based on something from RL. I also belive that it is the job of the writer not to overuse those stereotypes and to create a large variety of charecters. I do not mean any offence to those who are sensative about such subjects. I battle bad stereotypes constantly and understand how upsetting it can be. That and "Must go faster. Must go faster." Oh, did anybody catch that in ID4. Jeff Goldblum repeats that line when he and Will Smith are trying to get out of that mother ship's tunnel and the bay doors are closing on them. Hmm. Wouldn't they have been closed before that and only opened to admit ships or let them out? Arrggh! I hate thinking rationally! Ooohh. This is a short post. I think I'd better at least come up with a good ObMisty. Hmm. Let;s see. I'm reading Owlflight right now, so...Got one. When, eeps. Wait. SPOILER!!!!! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Okay, when Darian is accepted into k'Vala, he is basically taken as Snowfire's brother, right. So is he a wingsib or adopted clan. He doesn't take the Oath Savil and Van had to. He is given the talon of Snowfire's father's bondbird. It's mentioned that so is Nightwind. Of course, Nightwind is Snowfire's lady-love, so what's up with this? Is Darian a wingsib or clansmember? I think the latter, but I got the impression they didn't do that. Although, Moondance was a full member, not a wingsib. Maybe being accepted as a family member of a sort puts it on a different level. Whatever. There's my obmisty.
