"Heyla all. I just wanted to tell you I've picked up a pet." :Hmmph! Picked me, indeed.: Shadowspun rolls her eyes and points to the little bird house shaped thing hanging from a very long thong around her neck. It has a small hole in it and from the hole pokes a little froggy-face. "This is Hobgood. He's my frog." Hobgood looks around quickly, seeing the pool. :OOh! Is that a pool? I'm outta here.: He jumps out of the hole and into the pool. On his way down he sends, :Hello, all. Umm. Nice water.: Shadowspun sighs and sits by the pool. "Could *I* ever have a normal pet?" She gets out a book on stones and starts reading while Hobgood enjoys himself. ***************************************************************************** As for her songs, I just didn't like any of them, actually. I am getting the two VH tapes soon, but that's more to have them than anything else. I'm really not into filk. I'd rather listen to good classical, ambient, celtic, r&b, blues, jazz, oldies...in short, anything but rap and country/western. Oh, Cennydd, that sounds so nice. I'd really like somethng like that. Speaking of maps and descriptions, which I won't get into, which way of illustrating did you all like better? When Larry Dixon did them in pen & ink or painting them (maybe watercolors, can't tell, myself)? I like them better in pen & ink. Don't like the actors. Don't care about that particular story. I find I like the books about historical occurences better. Dramatized movies just make me think someone had too much time on their hands. :) I did finally see Pocahontas, which I was avoiding due to the fact that IT NEVER HAPPENED! It was on tv a couple of weeks ago and my mom told me I should give it a chance, in that parent tone-thing, no less. How do you escape after that? I watched it and as I expected, liked the songs. I do have the soundtrack. It's Disney, what can I say? I just didn't like anything else but the animals and Mother Willow. There is apparently a new one coming to video, and it has John Rolfe in it. Gee, maybe they'll fall in love, get married? I wonder if they'll tell about her being called the Savage Princess and dying in England of small pox? Hmm. Do I sound bitter? Sorry. I just get really burned when people try to pass off things as having happened and getting everyone to believe it. And while I am the first to admit that folklore is a good thing, it should not be taught in the classroom. Can you all tell that I want to be a history teacher? *grin* Okay, fun stuff-Karal's last name is Austreban. And what's amazing is I actually remembered that. Weird. Why don't we put to bed the decription thread by saying he decided to use an illusion for the color of his eyes? No? I know, won't fly. Had to try, though. ;) Maybe it was more a tribute to his restraint and the fact that the empire was so big, he didn't feel as if he had to make some sort of ostentatious display to appeal to his courtiers and people. After all, he was an Adept, right. And his army could pretty much run over everything in its path. As for the Prophet, maybe she hocked it or something. Or she could have lost it like that thief lost the Singing Sword (or some such name) in Obr. Of course, one of her people could have gotten peeved that they lost, killed her, taken the crown and now has a nice paperweight in his/her home. *grin* Of course, Hobgood thinks it was lost in a pool like that nice story about his cousin, you know, the other prince, and Hobgood just wasn't there to help her get it out. As she rubs a small pearl ring, she gradually turns invisable from the feet up. Thus hidden, she walks up to Anna and delicately pours the bucket of sea water over her head. "And welcome to you, too, Anna, though I see you haven't presented yourself yet." Digging into her pockets, she finds a towel, although, for unknown reasons, it is shaped like a duck rather than a sheep. She shrug, and hands the towel over, watching as it gradually becomes visable, inch by inch. Ok, now for more questions from the Storms books. .. on page 211 of SW, it says ". .. no real Empath would serve Falconsbae of his own free will. No point in trying to force an Empath to serve, either. It's a Gift that can't be coerced, though Falconsbane certaily tried often enough." What makes Empathy so different from Mindspeaking or Mage gift in this respect? Earlier in the book it says "anyone can be broken"; why not Empaths? I get the feeling I'm missing something here. . . Page 285 SW- "And how they had managed to make an ally of that stiff-necked, parochail bitch Solaris was completly beyond him [Tremane]" Where did Tremane get this view of Solaris? It seems to imply at least some contact and talks between the Empire and Karse- when? Is there more than one reason why Solaris is so antagonistic to Tremane when she confronts him in SR? ^*^Claire Seashimmer Apprentice Drencher Acolyte of OOPS ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Mar 1998 00:08:39 -0500 From: "John E Morris" To: "Mercedes Lackey List" Subject: Braid again Message-ID: <01bd53be$3eb23540$07109cd1-+AT+-default> >Is she obligated to do so? Or is any writer obligated to help anyone >forward their own little crusades? Just what writers don't need, a >political corectness committee on what race/creed/sexual orientaion >thier characters should be. I have nothing against them being there, >just against people making it seem like it's obligiatory for them to be >there. No author is under any obligation to create a "politically correct" character. They are, however, answerable to the readers of their novels who might happen to be of that race/creed/sexual orientation. It is easy to say that authors shouldn't be responsible for upholding current trends of social correctness. However, I suspect that were the issue a matter of race or creed, many people would be far more upset by dissenting opinions than were the matter relating to sexual orientation. Were an author to create black characters who were all stupid criminals who had great physical strength, or Jewish characters who were all consumed by greed, or Muslim characters whose sole purpose was the destruction of all those who did not adhere to the tenants of the Koran, there would be a far greater outcry. It is only when the question of gay characters arises that we choose to cry "political correctness" >Or any other 'special' (politically correct) characters. Putting in the >"token" gay/black/woman/handicaped person just because someone with a >loud mouth and a petty mind jumps up and down and says you're not being >fair to this group of that. You're just asking for it, aren't you? It is obvious to me that you have never felt discriminated against by mainstream society and would be perfectly content were you never confronted by a non-traditional character again. I ask you this: how many characters who were straight white males HAD to be straight white males for the story to make sense? Is tokenism in writing a result of necessity or of bigotry? The desire for acceptance and equality is NOT petty. Those who pioneer acceptance by an unfeeling majority are NOT loud-mouths. It is only those who are uncomfortable with people unlike themselves who find it so. Rosa Parks was not being shrill when she demanded the right to sit at the front of the bus, and those of us who are gay are not being shrill when we demand to be treated as people and not as caricatures. >McCaffery's of Gays was a bit stereotypical but stereotypes are based on some reality whether we >like it or not! Stereotypes are based, not on reality, but on the preception of reality. For instance, I could assume that all baptists are bigoted, racist, hate-filled and evil people because of my observations of a very vocal minority. However, that is not true. People have been using stereotypes to justify discrimination for a very long time, and it is just as wrong now as it was twenty years ago. We become entrenched in stereotype because it is easy to do so. Those of us who lay some claim to education have a responsibility to deny and lay waste to sterotypes. >In Arrows of the Queen, (don't have the text on hand, sorry) why did Rolan >make Taila forget that she had been chosen?! This question has been bugging >me forever. I mean, she found out as soon as they got to Haven! What was the >point? I don't recall any other Companion doing this, but I'm terribly >behind in reading the Storm trilogy so I might have missed it. Ah - some OBMisty at last - IM (not so humble :) ) O - Roland caused Talia to forget her choosing because she was simply not emotionally ready to deal with it at the moment. Remember, he couldn't mindspeak with her directly (though I wonder if Ms. Lackey isn't kicking herself for this, even as we speak - after all, I have never heard of ANY other herald who couldn't mindspeak his or her Companion, at least a little bit, and certainly not one with such a strong Gift as Talia. I suspect that this is one of those early genesis decisions that becomes harder to correct with each successive book) Roland couldn't explain to the sheltered Talia what had happened to her. Knowing what we know about heralds, he was almost certainly aware of her lack of knowledge about the process of Choosing. It is therefore logical to assume that he allowed her to believe that nothing had happened until someone able to vocalise the occasision happened along. My appologies if it seemed like I harped on the whole stereotype thing more than necessary. It is something I feel very strongly about. I am sick and tired of being labeled, discriminated against and pre-judged. I am tired of reading and reading and not finding a reflection of myself within the pages of a book. Most of all, I am tired of those who, turtlelike, withdraw into the shell of conventionality and bark at those who would be different. John E. I have to say that humans wouldn't be humans if we were all the same, and it is good that some authors will celebrate the differences between us. Anyway, the big news is that Fantastic Art have pictures by Jody Lee, and there are still some Magic's Price prints left, but not many and they are going fast. Anyway, if you want to contact then, the email address is: Leslie-+AT+-fantasticart.com Anyway, they have heaps of other pictures, including most of Mercedes Lackey's covers, and they are great.
