Earlier in the book it says "anyone can be broken"; why not Empaths? Where did Tremane get this view of Solaris? I have a pet theory about ther difference between the mage gifts and such. IMHO Mabe there are four areas in which a person can have gifts. Healing(mind magic wise) True mind magic, True mage gift, and Empathy. Just like a Healer can't be forced(I don't think it was ever tryed either) nither can an empath be forced. I mean empaths can sence peopls feeling so for thier gift to work their own feelings need to be at least some what stable. Just found Text ev for the second queston. Thank you John for your informative letter, but I have textevd to prove you wrong at least on the Talia part..ahem..here goes! page 80, my copy, AOtQ "but if you thought your Companion spoke to you when he Chose you, you were right. He did. No matter if yu never have more than a touch of a Gift, your Companion will always speak to you in your heart at that moment-even if he never does so again. It wasn't something you dreamed. And if you have the right Gift, one day you'll learn to talk back." Talia breathed an unconscious sigh of relief, not noticing that all the others except Davan were doing the same." So there we have it! Companion Rolan DID talk to Talia...that lovely I Choose you speech I posted earlier...sorry John! ~although the reason he made her forget, is by common acceptance, the fact that she wasn't ready to be Chosen, IMNSHO, if she hadn't been surrounded by Heralds when she found out she probably would have run away...i.e. my statement that she could hardly believe SELANY! the QUEEN, for cripes sake... Heralds are notorious for making people feel comfortable, and believing them...thank the Havens...or else little Talia may have not agreed to stay on~remember how Sherril and Selany and Housekeeper were the deciding factors in her being (not quite sure) that this was the right place for her, but she was going to stay, and she longed to trust (Sherril/Elcarth) but wasn't quite sure if Heralds were as trustworthy as the Books said! "I-didn't know. I couldn't-I don't feel anything from Jenna, not really, I-my gift-it's fetching. I don't mindspeak even with her, much-I-told her what to do, but she didn't do it...' You also have to remember, companion's are very stubborn beings, they do what they want to do, remember at one point in TLHM vanyel found out that companions can mind speak whoever they choose, it doesn't have to be their chosen, it's just like the secrets that they keep, maybe Rolan had a reason for not speaking with Talia. Empathy is somewhat harder to control, someone who is evil could not coerce an empath into working with them, because that empath would feel the victim's pain, almost physically, everything that one of the victim's went through, the empath would go through- it would end up dring the empath insane, or they would kill themselves to escape it. wind to thy wings- Kat ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Mar 1998 15:29:56 -0600 From: jmg300 To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re:not getting the list Message-ID: <199803202043.PAA20300-+AT+-smtp1.erols.com> Fallenangel, I've sent out a request to join and to get the list. Suddenly hungry, she extends her silver wings, flicks them slightly, and a container of fresh hummus and wheat pita appear in her hand. "Hummus and Pita, anyone?" she offers. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ :) :) Actually the Talia/Rolan thing always troubeled my mind, but I always had the impression that the Holderkin saw the Companions as Demons or such, and even though Talia was desperate to escape, would she go with an animal she had been brought up to fear? But then again she idolized the Heralds and wanted to be one... I'm just full of contridictions today... Someone (I forget who and I have to delete all my old mail) commented that the books after LHM were less developed. I agree. With Arrows and LHM the books are focused on one character, or one character and a minor character directly related (not that Stephen is a minor character... you know what I mean). I really knew Van and Talia really well. With all the others the focus is on two different characters (or more) and the story jumps in between. I found myself reading about Elspeth, and then just before something REALLY exciting happend, it would swich to Darkwind. That was sort of annoying and confusing. Now, I love all the books, but the two series I read most are Arrows and LHM. I own most, and yet I reread those the most. I think that says something... I'm really attached to Talia and Van, both are going to college with me... :) Well, that's all for today... ~Andi Etain Seaward Knight of Fluff Silly-Type-Person Member of the Mistic Circle Located in the Hall of Mist --------------------------------------------------- Get free personalized email at http://www.iname.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Mar 1998 14:51:46 -0800 (PST) From: Ana Cotton To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: dual names, ObMisty Message-ID: <19980320225146.23700.rocketmail-+AT+-web1.rocketmail.com> Anna wrote: >I've also noticed that there is another Ana who posts here. > Would it be to confusing if I post as Anna too? >>> Nahh, we would know who we were! > Should I go by another name? >>> Unless people claim it gets tooo confusing, but we're all intelligent people, I don't think that'll happen... Talia was not in any immediate physical or mental danger, but Alberich and(what's that kid's name from MPromise? Tashir?)were, and in both cases it proved to be for the definate advantage of Valdemar-Alberich later thwarts the assasination attempt on Selany, becomes the weaponsmaster of the Collegium, and introduces Talia to Solaris, thereby cementing an alliance to thwart the Hardorn/Empire/what's left of Hardorn after Elspeth pays Ancar a visit, and then because of that alliance, they gain an ally inSPOILER(iftel) and in Tashir's case, his lands become part of Valdemar in a time when they are very needed...also um, Neave was Chosen out Kingdom at a time when he was contemplating murder/suicide and he was going through great amounts of physical and mental abuse and HIS abilities showed Talia her true ability, Empathy(and he may have become an integral part of the Heralds, with his rare and weird ability in the Gift of Progection)which without Talia, all the good (and bad) stuff in QO and Winds trilogies would possibly not have happened...Anyway, that just goes to show that Companions have certain rules for Choosing OutKingdom~Savyil couldnt Choose Kerowyn until she showed up in Valdemar because she really wasnt about to be killed...but the instan Kero shows up in Valdemar...bammm! I don't know if I'd call coercion a *type* of emotion, but definatly dependant on them, making someone feel trust, etc... but I agree with your comment about being intuned... the empath would probably have a better idea about what was theirs and what wasn't. this is also IMHO :) -------- I thought I was the only person that laughed at the guy bouncing off the propeller! I didn't think Storms >was up to Misty's standard. And I will always love Van best of all. :) I agree, I loved LHM, even if the people that live near me & I talk to hated it. So there I liked Storms though.... that brings up a question.. why is it that almost every civilization that one incounters in fantasy books has lost the great magics (and/or Technology)? The Aes Sadai of Robert Jordan, the Bard people of Misty's Free Bards series, The "Dark Sword" of Weis & Hickman... the list goes on... It seems to me that it might be interesting to be *at* the age of legends (well maybe a little after, right at the inception of the war of shadow when they *had* all those abilities). As for the story with Quentin in it, what about a book telling everything from Quentin's Prospective, might be intersting. They did mention Quentin in one of the Stories in "Sword of Ice" but nothing more than a passing thing. I think he's ready for stardom... anyone else? Someone mentioned a map. I like that idea as well, would it just be a map or an atlas like the "Atlas of the Dragon Lance World". I know if it was an Atlas I'd buy it. Has a story w/Quenten in it. Pretty cute story. Here's a question, are we taking the stories in SofI as true to the world? What I mean is, are we accepting these stories as actrually having happened in Velgarth's real life? Some of them were written with Misty, so I assume they are, but about the others? Someone mentioned there were rules for reincarnation. Don't remember who. If you can, please give me a breakdown and where you got them from. I only know what *sounds* right/logical to me. Haven't read any books on it. -Storms spoiler, sort of- * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * I really liked Karal. He was so unsure of himself, it was rather endearing. I will admit that he could have used a little more spine, but he has plenty of time to get one. After all, he will be stuck around Kero and Natoli for the rest of his life. If they can't do it, noone can. But I like her characters not always perfectly confident of everything. There is some reflection of real-life there. IMO (I'm rarely humble), no adolescents/young adults are entirely sure of themselves unless they're utterly nuts. Or at least obsessed with something. I also liked that Van, Stef and 'Fandes finally got a vacation. I didn't like seeing them go, but let's face it. They were stuck in the Forest for about 600 years. Surely they needed a break. I imagine we'll see them again, though. (Please, please, please?) Maybe even Need will be back. Wouldn't that be cool? I wonder what she'd want to come back as, though. You know, if she and Savil were both human at the same time, they'd either be bitter enemies or best friends. That would be a fight to see, wouldn't it? This doesn't explain why Rolan made Talia forget being Chosen, but I tend to agree with others that she would have been scared off . . . ***************************************************************************************** >>Shadowspun & Hobgood wrote: >>It's Disney, what can I say?
