Presumably each mark is equal to an hour, though I don't think Misty ever says so for sure. Any other opinions? I think Talia was doing what I often do... she put herself in the story and was daydreaming. I don't think she actually got all the way through the part of what happened with Van and Stef at the Pass, because later in class she asked Teren what happened to Vanyel. Also, when reading MPrice, we see that Stef actually DID ride 'Fandes for help, and then 'Fandes came back to be with Van at the end. I don't think the author of the book Talia was reading HAD put another herald in It seems more to me it was just a matter of putting herself in the scene and elaborating a little in her own mind. I'm sure I've missed some interesting discussions, but sometimes it's hard to keep up with everything And now for some stuff of my own... I noticed that Misty rarely uses exactly the same name for two of her characters in her series of Valdemar books Anyway, my point in this is that I HAVE found one instance of using the same name twice, and I was wondering if anyone else had found/remembered the use of any others. The one I found was Medren. A Medren appears as a servent that helps Talia and Jadus... I think he is the one that brings them to the Servants Midwinter banquet... and, of course, Medren, Van's nephew. I wonder if it was a matter of Misty REALLY liked the name and decided to use it again in LHM??? Nothing else to say for now, I guess... Back into the shadows... You are well come to the list. You haven't seen much of me for a few weeks because I was trying to weed through about 200 messages (yikes -- they went back to mid-February) before going on a trip which would yield another 140 messages when I returned. ********** Like Reighvyn Emrys, I've started to reread the LHM stuff. Oh, wow. I just got up to get some water -- think I'm dehydrated from all the sobs. You know, Misty keeps the arc going very nicely between Lendel's suicide and Van's attempt -- the buildup is incredible. I noticed that my sobs were very different from those at Talia's almost-death. For Talia, I was weeping from a certain despair, a losing of a very treasured person, and imagining what each character was feeling. With Van, the self-hatred, the accusation coming at him, the thoughts that the world would be better without him....whew. In addition to not wanting to lose Vanyel, and in addition to trying to feel his pain (I say trying because it's very overwhelming), these self-doubts and hatred were very familiar to many of us. Hm. I'm not quite sure how to say what I'm saying, so I'm going to stop. *g* (as the crowd breathes a sigh of reliief) ******** Hm...this is Misty-related, tho it's probably fluff Heartsong, I love Talia too. Wanted to be her. Share some of her weaknesses, and enjoy imagining having some of her traits. Of course, I've had it pointed out to me that most of my light reading is really sort of a search for role models, or at least for "people" I can admire and learn from while relating to them, so that their admirable traits seem attainable for me. ******* Pam, who goes by Map, wrote: > I'm curious -- does everyone read every message on the list? As with Stasia, I was much more avid in my mail reading when I first joined the list. However, I do still read all the posts...I just skim through the sections that bring up topics I'm not interested in (haven't seen Titanic...will NOT be pulled into another discussion on homosexuality, especially since it's discussions of not Misty but Anne McCaffrey...have some thoughts on the ESP/daja vu thing, but don't want to upset my listsibs...). Though I will generally read the first posting about a topic, no matter how fluffy, if it goes on & on (as in many posts on the topic), I'll start to skip past it. And like Stasia, since the whole Ring thing started, I've been scanning more. Personally it's because of the third-person narratives, which were fun at first, but which I simply don't have time to read when I've got hundreds of emails to respond to. And this is an indication that I'm really swamped -- I'm usually so compulsive that I have to read anything and everything. *sigh* Anyway, I'll sign off for now. Hmm. Why don't we put the discrepancies in the art and books down to the fact that even with the exact same description or instructions people will still interpret them differently, oftentimes leading to something completely different than another's interpretation. If any of you have ever done an icebreaker, there is one in which each person gets a piece of paper. They have to close their eyes and the instructions are read. You know, fold in half, tear the top-right corner. Fold in half again, do the same thing. You do that a couple of times and open your eyes. Unfold the paper, hold it up and see how many different ways the same instructions with the same piece of paper can be interpreted. It's pretty cool, actually. As for Selenay, from the timeline in the front of the books, it looks like Roald was her grandfather. I haven't read anything about him being assassinated, but her father, Sendar was. I can only assume her mum died the same time, with them being lifebonded and all. I'm going to see where I found that lifebonded thing. I really don't recall. Same names: Arnod, Arven, Bel, Elspeth, Eren, Firesong k'Treva, Florian, Garth, Geoffrey, Gerick, Gesta, Hansa, Huur, Jadrek, Jillian, Joserlin, Justen, Kris, Liam, Loren, Lysle, Medren, Nevis, Orser, Patris, Rainwind, Ratha, Reva, Roan, Shallan, Snowfire, Stormcloud, Stormwing, Tam, Taver, Tedric, Tobe, Trenor, Vetch, plus all the variants (and there are many) I do the scanning thing, too. I read the first couple of sentences and skip if it doesn't look like something I want to wade into. Oh, John, Bravo. Very well put, very well restrained. ;) There was other stuff I wanted to respond to but I didn't tag the messages and don't feel like going throught them aagain. I'm going to call it quits and (finally) delete the old amil. I'll find something to say when I do that, of course. ;) Shadowspun & Hobgood _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. In (I think) WFury, doesn't Van say something about the borders changing between his and Elspeth's time. That might explain why at the borders the restriction is lessened. That and idiot Ancar is actively working to bring it down. Gotta find that quote. Anyone else want to try? I just dumped 80-some messages and when I got rid of them all, one came in--my own! :) Can't win. There's something that's nagging me about the currency thread, but I'm not sure what. I'm going to skim the VH books tonight to see if it's there. Short, I know, but at least it's all MIsty related. Let me begin by saying that I agree with those who have said that we can choose whether or not to purchase an author's work, just as we can choose to see or not to see a movie or to listen or not to listen to a radio broadcast. My complaint is not with those bigoted and shallow authors who deliberately choose to libel a group or groups, but with those authors who think they are doing something good but are in reality perpetrating a stereotype. It is my opinion that, in the book in question, Ms. McCaffery was trying to use gay characters because she thought the group should be represented in fiction. As it happened her characters were stereotypical, and to some of us, mildly offensive. She should have done better research. That is my position on this matter.. In your opinion, I repeat - in your opinion. I repeat what I said and others have said - if you don't like it don't buy it. If by some miracle you have discovered the secret of telepathy and can PROVE your opinion then you will have a case. As of now you do not. > As to the other issue, that of "whining" I have this to say. John it boils down to this, and I'll make it as simple as I can. If it looks like a duck and it walks like a duck and it even quacks like a duck its a pretty good bet its a duck. YOU ARE WHINING! If you've got a problem with an author then for God's sake start a boycott! Burn his/her books so you can get on the six o'clock news, buy adds in the newspaper or on the tube to state how you feel put upon. Your sexual orientation is of ZERO I repeat ZERO interest to me and I suspect others. I can tell you right now for a fact that if you came into my office looking for work I would not hire you, NOT because of your "preferences" but because of what I have seen here. As I said before I detest whining, and I will not have it in my office by ANYONE, regardless of age, gender, orientation, body type or race. I repeat you are a whiner. Denial does not help nor does it work. Pardon my use of a rather famous quote folks but it seems SO appropriate for this and how I feel about all this tripe. - "Frankly my dear (good sir) I don't give a DAMN!" Mark the tax zombie. Do not forget the 'MAIL' part of the command - it won't work without it. Hope this helps you, Pam and those others who also mentioned the volume of mail. Luv, Megan Glitterglass ~Councilor of Mist~ (Master Glass Artisan) Assistant to the God of New Homes specializing in Neighborhood Welcoming Committees Knight of Amber and Marigold Knight of Fairgrove (in training) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Mar 1998 00:32:14 -0500 (EST) From: Kenneth Allen Hyde To: Misty Lackey List Subject: MIST: A visit from the Mage Message-ID: As the rhetoric of John and Mark reverberate through the Halls of Mist an ominous silence begins to sweep inward, stilling the sounds of mirth and mayhem both. Dark shadows creep across the floors, dimming the lights and stealing the sparkle from the air. As the gathered Lords and Ladies of the Hall look on, the darkness begins to pulse gently with a verdant glow that speaks of anger, barely held in check. Slowly the subaqueous light waxes brighter, collecting into rivulets of emerald fire that flow across the floors to gather in a pool of radiance. Rising out of the pool, the host can see the form of the Mage of Green Silences. Black hair flows in a wild tangle across a body that is neither young nor old. Emerald eyes stare out of a face that is indefinably and frighteningly alien, looking on the crowded members of the gathering with a dangerously measuring glance. As his eyes light upon the figures of the Tax Zombie and John Eaton, the Mage's countenance becomes harsh and severe. The sweeping lengths of his voluminous and concealing robe leap and flow around him with a life of their own as he bears down on the two hapless members of the Court. Seizing the two miscreants in skeletal white hands, the Mage lifts both forms from the ground, shaking them slightly as he addresses them in a dire voice. "Enough! For shame! To disturb the revelry of these Halls with your political wrangling! This is neither the time nor the place for such things. John, you should surely realize that, however laudable it may be, this is not a venue for you to proselytize your personal political agenda. And Mark, you are a grown man, or so I thought, and should know better than to insult your hostess with such a mean-spirited, sniping, and downright rude response to John's error. At the risk of repeating a cliche, "two wrongs do not make a right" and his error in no wise exonerates you. If the two of you must fight, then you are welcome to go somewhere private and kill each other like gentleman. However, you will do so outside these Halls, out of respect for the wishes of your hostess, the Lady Melanie, and your listsibs. When you are quite ready to behave like civilized adults and converse pleasantly with your listsibs on the topics of this list, we will welcome you back. But until then, take your squabbling elsewhere!" With a final shake, the Mage knocks the two men's heads together and drops them on the floor. Stalking away, his coldly angry voice can be heard muttering "Children! I'm surrounded by 10 year olds! Not that I have anything against well-behaved ten-year-olds, but they seem to be in very short supply!" Turning to rake the Hall with blazing eyes, the Mage addresses the assembly. "I hope that I can trust everyone here to help these two avoid further temptations to fight in our midst by allowing this matter to drop. Each and every member of our company is entitled to their own opinion, but for the sake of civility, it is to be hoped that all will have the common courtesy and wisdom to let this issue rest for the moment." With these words, the Mage's cloak swirls about him, grown impossibly large and seeming to be part of the shadows that still hold the Hall in their chilling silent grip. For a moment, the Hall is filled only with the darkling verdant shadows and an endless moment of silence before the Mage vanishes. As light and merriment creep back into the Hall to recover their demesne from the shadows of the Mage's visit, the assembly is left to consider what has happened and to act upon the dictates of their conscience and wisdom.
