Cinderella had gone to the ball the two nights before, each night in a dress more beautiful than before, of course. Obviously the prince was a smart enough fellow to realize she'd do it again and made his plan accordingly. If you want to leap to conclusions, Eldan was mentioned in AFlight. :) Here we are: "...a tale being told with some skill by a middle-aged Herald whose twin streaks of gray, one at each temple, stood out startlingly in the firelight." p56 "Talia was astonished to see the Queen, dressed in old, worn leathers, sharing a cloak and resting her head in easy intimacy on the shoulder of the middle-aged storyteller." p65 That's if you want to draw conclusions. ;) *Is* there going to be a book about Lavan Firestorm? That would be fun. Disney has ALWAYS taken adult stories and prettied them up so toddlers could sing along. The really ironic thing is that the Brothers Grimm were trying to do the same thing. Sure, the stories seem rough compared to the Disney versions, but compared to the versions passed down for centuries via oral tradition, the BG tales are positively boring. Remember, in the original version, Little Red Ridding Hood and her Grandmother don't get rescued and Hansel and Gretel become fodder for the witch - the stories were meant to be warnings to children about misbehaving. On a somewhat more modern note, however, The Little Mermaid dies. Mh my God, they killed the little Mermaid The one argument I've heard in support of revisionist myth is that perhaps >it will inspire kids to go out and read the real thing. However, I think >it's hooey. Myth means something and we still love and read it because it >tells us stories about gut level things like murder, anger, incest, >jealousy, loneliness...By diluting it down into singable chunks it just >loses meaning, and soon I don't think we'll care about it anymore. Damn straight! We read it, after all. There is something wrong with a society that thinks we have to dumb down our literature so that it will appeal to children. Kids learned and enjoyed these tales (as well as others) for centuries without our help. The same applies to Shakespeare - I think that someone mentioned the Leonardo di Caprio version of Romeo and Juliet - In his day, Shakespeares works were as popular as MTV and Melrose Place are today. The average man loved them then, and I think that if given a chance now, he could still. >I always assumed that Misty probably helped with the drawings, rather like >one gives a description to a sketch artist, and approved them before they >went to press...But I've been disappointed regardless. Personally, I've never liked artists pictures in novels. I think that the author's descriptions should be sufficient to give us a mental picture of the characters. Otherwise, he or she isn't doing the job... >It does seem in Winds and Storms that Firesong has so much more power than any other mage in the >books. I'm not so sure whether it was a matter of power or of training - had Elspeth the opportunity to grow up in a magic-rich environment such as Firesong, who is to say that she wouldn't have been as powerful? >Here we are: "...a tale being told with some skill by a middle-aged >Herald whose twin streaks of gray, one at each temple, stood out >startlingly in the firelight." p56 Hmm...it's interesting, but a real stretch. Given the span of years between the two books, I find it hard to credit that ML had Eldan in mind here. Just because we like the same author, and enjoy talking about the characters, books, and the writting in general, does not necessarily mean that everything else in our lives will agree too. We must all accept that we have different views on other things. So lets just remember why we are here to speak of our love for ML and her books. Thank you. That said she turns to a different subject... Hey whoever talked about the Hawkbrothers and living as long as Shadowbane, you talked about ML not saying anything about the Hawkbrothers not living any longer than any other Human. Though they deffinatly don't live 500 years or so they do tend to live a little longer. In TLHM MPrice I think, I don't have the book with me for sure, Sayvil went to her friends Starwind and Moondance for help with the leechblades and when Starwind and Moondance appear Sayvil is still amazed at how young they look and how it had been ten or twenty years since the last time she had seen them and they still looked the same and certainly no older. She stated that it is the heartstone that keeps them looking so young and it also keeps them healthy but that when they do start to go it all happens at once. This leads me to believe that they do have a longer life span but that when they do die that they die all at once. Because of the heartstone. Didn't she also say in MPawn that Starwind was older than her but that you could never tell because he never seemed to age. I seem to remeber her saying something to that affect while she was first talking to Starwind after they had arrived there to start to heal adn teach Vanyel. does anyone else agree with me on the lifespan thing? It's the classic situation: if you don't like something, you can either complain or you can try and do a better job. The first option is not one that most people will put up with for long if it is not accompanied by the second option. At least, that was how I was raised: you don't criticize someone strongly or harshly unless you are willing to do the same job they are doing and try and do it better. > (Note: read the following in a purely curious voice, no sarcasm or anything else) Does this mean that you think of writing as a "craft" which can be learned, as opposed to an "art" which incorporates an element of inborn talent? I do agree with the sentiment that we should stop sitting on our duffs complaining when we don't like something. I also notice you did say "do our best". I have been trying for the last 10 minutes to elaborate on this, but nothing I come up with sounds quite like I want, so I'll just let the original question stand. ****************************************************************************** ***** Yvonne Shadowshape writes: Ah, but you can have an empath that was insane to start with. And lets not forget those ends-justify-the-means people who sincerely believe they are doing the right thing no matter how much it hurts themselves and others. Are empaths more immune to twisted thinking? Interesting thought, and I could be wrong here, I would be interested in opposing views. Just because you can *feel* someone else does that necessarily make you *understand* someone else? Another sort of related thought, I'll bet empaths don't always draw the right conclusions from the emotions they sense? I mean, they know what someone is feeling, is it always easy to guess WHY? When "Batman" first came out, some of us saw it on opening weekend, and the theater, of course, was packed. When Jack Nicholson came into the art gallery and his goons started vandalizing, and he was making comments about the works, the whole theater burst into laughter. Everyone was roaring, and I was looking around thinking "they don't get it." I thought it was scary, very menacing, and everyone was laughing at it. Maybe it's just me. (or Jack Nicholson) ************************************************************************** I read the "colored" fairy books when I was between 7 and 9 (don't remember exactally) and loved them. I didn't notice the "violence" in the stories, it was just a part of the story (although I must say the part about cutting off anatomy stuck with me). From a child's perspective, it just wasn't important, nor did it give me nightmares (and I was, and am, a person who scares easily). However, at the same time I was enjoying "The Aristocats", and still like Disney. *************************************************************************** Hall of Mist: Sorchafyr, who has been quietly thinking deep things, and occasionally being startled out of her reverie by various apperances of chocolate, flowers and other gifts, finally takes a deep breath and looks around. The sheep looked up to her and baaed as one. Sorcha sighed, at this rate she would have to change her name to Bo Peep. The yellow sheep unfocused it's eyes and a small yellow flower appeared in Sorcha's hand. Startled, she looked to the sheep, which she could have sworn wore a small smile. What a useful talent, she thought wryly. What should she name this sheep? Buttercup? Marigold? Daisy? Narcisus? (Don't remember who let this sheep loose in the hall, but I did take note of it at the time. Could you let me know if it already had a name? My name is Serran ni'Grotto, and you are Jeanne. We belong together.:he said once into her mind. Jeanne felt suddenly weak. This was the moment, a realization of her greatest dream. She started to let herself sink to the floor in astonishment, noticing that she ended up resting on a furry, white with black striped couch, which seemed to be breathing. :Of course Im breathing. Im your mindmate.Oh, and you can call me Serran: he said, and Jeanne was pretty sure that the last bit of that was transmitted in public mode so that everyone would know that he most definately was now bonded to someone. Someone who would very soon have to get up and clean his hummus and pita mess up off the once-pristine floor. We interrupt this tagline to bring you a special report. My friends call me the Fire Mage. I'm just recently Adept. I guess it'll take me a little getting used to."-shrug- -------------------- BTW, I don't know if this has ever come up before, but Kethry became an Adept in Oathbreakers. Did her hair and eyes ever bleach? I don't remember any mention of that. Kethry's one of my favorites. I really like Karal, too, even though I don't feel I know him as well as I knew Talia. I go by Elsa, I'm 15 and I live in New Brunswick, one of the Atlantic provinces of Canada. I'm an only child; I have auburn hair and hazel eyes (this is just to disprove any notions of me being the stereotypical "dumb blond"). I first read Mercedes Lackey in one of the books she wrote with Anne McCaffrey, a few short stories here and there, and then I jumped into the middle of the Mage Winds Trilogy and she's been my favorite author ever since. I've read most of the Velgarth books, the Bardic Voices trilogy, Bedlam Boyz, and the ones involving Kory,Eric, and Beth. Also lots of short stories, of course.^_^ Well, I have no idea if that was too long or not long enough or what, so somebody tell me when I make a boo-boo! I can take critisism(sp?),really! Jeanne shortly followed him over to the newest of the newbies. "Don't mind Serran, Its just his way of saying hello! By the way, here's a towel for you when the bucket carring Yvonne and Seashimmer finally get around to saying hello." So saying, she waved her hand and again appeared a warm magical towel wrapped in a waterproof material. "Sans the Clover flower, though I am sure you will recieve all sorts of gifts when the listsibs get ahold of you. Welcome, oh newest member of our ever expanding family." She smiled at Elsa's bewilderment, then bowed herself back into her corner, beconing Serran ni'Grotto to follow. My Professor told us repeatedly that a lot of the oral tradition was lost because of rewrites and extensions of descriptions on the first original tales. So while I can not say which one came first I just wanted to remind or state that the versions of the fairy tales themselves have changed through countless retellings. Whether ultimately one could track down the ORIGINAL version of Cindrella or any tale type is probably a big NO. But we can date certain versions and where they came from but I doubt There would be much resemblence between today's Cinderella and the original. "Greetings listsib, I see I am not the first to welcome you to the list. I too make my home in New Brunswick when I am not in the Hall. I see you have already been given a towel, so I will give this mirror. If you are quick enough, when they come to greet you with the water, you can repel it back at them. But you have only one chance. The mirror will dissolve after one usage. This is a gift from myself and 'Tasia. She is over teasing the twins Beltain and Samhain." Anna quickly mindsends for her to come and meet Elsa and gives a mental apology to Taynar. "'Tasia, meet Elsa, no teasing 'Tasia, for we come from the same place. Be safe Elsa, and have here. I'm fairly new myself and I already feel like I among family." Anna steps back into the shadows warning 'Tasia about losing tail feathers if Beltain and Samhain become too agitated.*** >This is just to disprove any notions of me being the stereotypical "dumb blond".
