Many of us who have been around for a long time have accumulated a plethora (10 point word!) of titles. The longer you have been around, the more titles you end up with. Also the longer you have been around, the more you have discussed, and frequently those discussions have been ones that are repeating, and one doesn't feel the need to get involved in again. It isn't that people don't *have to* read or respond, just generally there hasn't been much to respond too :) While when one is new to the list, they generally read every post, everything is new to them, so they want to discuss it all. It's that feeling of newness and excitement and finally having found so many other people who enjoy the same thing that I think we all experience when we first subscribe to the list. One question -- somewhere in the the trilogy, an Avatar mentions to someone else (either Dawnfire to Tre'valen or one of those to An'desha) that the Cataclysm produced echoes. The same thing is stated in Storms, where those echoes get into action. Did they figure it out in Storms, or did whoever this was mentioned to tell someone else about it? My memory is slightly faulty on this point, due to the time between now and when I read Storms, but did An'desha get paired up with anybody? Firesong wasn't entirely imagining the terrific amount of couples there were around, most of them lifebonded. (I thought lifebonding was *rare!*) Then *he* at least found a partner in Silverfox. This may just be confusion, but in Vows and Honor, it seemed as if most Mage-Gifted could become an Adept if they kept plugging at it. In Winds, however, you have to have to be born with the ability to become an Adept, you can't get any farther than whatever you were born with. I'm *sure* I'm conjuring up shades, but I remember sometime in the distant past someone expressed the opinion that they thought the people in Storms would come up with temporary solutions only. Did whoever this was get an answer? Because I think that they would have stopped needing solutions when the Big One came. ---------FLUFF BELOW---------- I've noticed a lot of discussion on fairy tales. I'm not sure if everyone on the list would be interested, but I have an article sent to me by a friend about the various versions and origins of fairy tales. If you think I should send it to the list, just tell me, or I can send it individually to anyone who asks. Couldn't resist... the little mermaid *does* die -- she kills herself rather than kill the Prince. She gets turned into some sort of air spirit, who must spend 300 years in that form before she can become human. And every time a child is good, the sentence goes down by a year, and every time a child is bad, the sentence goes up by a year. Well, that's how my mom told it to me, anyway. I'm not sure where *she* got it from. In "Into the Woods," the baker is tied into Rapunzel -- he's her sister. He needed to go and get all these ingredients to take the spell off his wife and he (witch: "... your family tree would be a barren one!"). And only Act One is funny. Lots of people (well, it *felt* like lots of people!) got killed in Act Two. We had to watch a video of the musical recently for my Drama class, so most of the details are pretty fresh. I'm probably getting waaaaaaaay off track here, but... we watched Into the Woods to get an idea of some fairy tales, since in groups we would pick and perform a one. My group picked Cinderella, 'cept we had only 4 people. In the end, it's the dad who's the tyrant, the mother just got run over by a stagecoach and suffered minor brain damage, and the "fairy godmother" is a magical bee ("We were all out of fairy godmothers"). The prince gets the shoe, but then he falls asleep and it's stolen. He furtively replaces it with his own shoe, and proceeds with the search. Having lost all hope, he out of habit puts the shoe on, it fits, and he says stuff like "Oh, I've been looking for you forever!" while hugging himself and runs off stage; Cinderella runs after him. If the previous was way off track, this must be halfway 'round the world. I'm working on a story, and I'm stuck, (in the middle of a conversation!) and all I need is someone I can give the background of the two characters to, so that we can sort of improvise what might happen. How on earth did I do that?...oh, sorry, I'll stop being silly. It's just that I started to put "short misty" or something like that, then realized I could put a USEFUL subject line. *g* Let's see if I can remember to do that next time... The following is all IMHO: Okay, just got a little cash in hand, and rushed down to the bookstore to buy Oathblood. Now, if you're like me and have bought every Sword & Sorceress you can get your hands on, most of Oathblood will be old news for you, since it's a bunch of T&K short stories. However, there are a couple of new stories, and the last one, "Oathblood," is really, really good. You know, I found it very noticeable in rereading these short stories that I really don't like short stories. They seem too rushed, no detail, little character development. I liked reading them in the context of S&S books because they were a "shot" of Misty, and sort of kept T&K alive, and they're kinda fun to reread just to get familiar with them again. And the comments before the stories are sometimes enlightening. So if you like short stories and T&K, BUY THIS BOOK. But I wanted to tell those of you who aren't fond of short stories that "Oathblood" is not like the rest. First of all, it's about 115 (paperback) pages. Now, that's obviously short, but it's not like trying to squeeze a story into 30 or 40 pages. Oathblood felt fully developed -- tho I sure would like to spend more time with those children...maybe she'll write a book? *wistful, puppy-dog eyes* So if you're fond of T&K, BUY THIS BOOK...but don't expect too much new stuff if you've read everything ever written about them. But the new stuff is pretty good. Kethry was an adept, but she didn't use nodes, she used a source of magic that all her school adepts used, at least I think that. Sorry for the short post. It's another crazy school week, so I'm a bit behind reading posts. Sheep bearing chocolate to all. She is happy to see that people are enjoying her gazebo and hot tub. She sees the flower that appeared in her hand and Apache Tears ear. She looks across the room to see that it is a gift from a newbie. She quickly walks over to her and hugs her. She mindsends: Thank you soo much Kat. Ilove flowers and so does mu furball. She would say thank you if she were h=not playing with the wolves and owl so much. Heartsong looked in the direction of Apache Tear and laughed to see an overgrown panther jumping about like a frog. She then turned back to Kat. "Kat I think you deserve a psecial gift for your generosity. Where I come from all people bond to a animal. If you do not mind, I have brought a friend for you.(Heartsong reaches out into the air and a small creme colored kitten appears in her hand.) She has no name yet, but she is just a baby. She will grow with you as you grow in the Hall. She will be a full grown lioness one day to match you. You see I know in my heart that you are just as strong and bold as she. So pleasse take her in good health. She is an orphan and could use a friend. Heartsong smiles and walks off to find Etain. When she sees her she walks over and gives her a mental hug. When Etain turns to greet her, she bows politely. She mindsends: Thank you for the chocolate sheep. I guess you did not get my gift to you from last time. I thought your wings were so beautiful and so I brought this(in her hand appears a bottle of a thousand tiny stars.) These are to decorate your wings and to fill all you world with brightness and hope. Then Apache Tear comes up behind her and nuzzles Etain's hand. As Eatin looks down at her. Apache places a necklace in her hand. It is a simple strap of leather with an Apache Tear surrounded by emeralds and amethysts. Then sshe walks off to join the wolves again. Heartsong laughs and quietly leaves Etain to her friends. Then she goes in search of another kind individual, Sorcha. As Apache Tear realizes who her mindamte is going to find, she runs after her. As they reach Sorcha, Apche Tear jumps up and gives her a big hug and Heartsong does likewise. They both hold her in a warm embrace and praise her for her beauty and kindness. Then they froma spell together and a cloak of golden suns and silver moons appears around Sorcha's shoulders. It is a special cloak that gives off eternal warmth and comfort while lighting ones way in the dark. Then an array of crystal and rubies are scattered at her feet. "This is for you kindness and encouragement. It has meant alot to me." Then Heartsong and Apache disappear to find Freedom. Heartsong stepss out of the Mist right in front of Freedom. She gives her a big hug and says,"It's nice to hav a defender on ones side. I am glad that you have accepted my minor gift, but I was finally able to find one that I think would suit you much better." She pulls out a set of arm bands, wrist braces, and a head ban made of steel with arcane symbols carved in them. Then each are set with a single Tiger's eye. "This a special set that will bring strength and protection to the wearer. It was made by a powerful Adept and it blocks off all magical attacks. You are essentially immune to anything short of an earthquake under your feet. I figure this is the least I can give a fellow warrior. Peace and health. I must go." Heartsong then sees a sheep in her hand. She sends a stuffed cat to Barbara to give her company in her office. Heartsong jumps to see a fellow Adept in the Hall. She runs to meet Fire Mage. She mindsends: It's abotu time there were mages here. My name is Heartsong and that panther plying with the wolves is my baby Apache Tear. I am soory, but I do not douse people with water, but I do bring newbies special gifts. (She brings out a perfect crystal ball) Sorry, this is the best I could think of. I hop that will be useful to you. Then she hugs her fellow Adept and bounces off to see the last newbie she knew off. She spotted Elsa and Gates over to her. She shakes her hand and says"I have been wanting to meet you. sorry if I have not had a chance to introduce myself. I am Heartsong and I hav a special gift for you." She steps aside to reveal a small blue scaled dragon bounce out from the shadows. "This is Skydancer. He is only a baby, but he will grow in time with you and you could probably ride him. He is looking for a friend and I think you two would be perfect. Please accept him and give him the home I cannot. You two will do eachother good. Well I need to go." Heartsong began to walk into the Mist when she felt faint. She sat down on the bench and she felt dizzy again. then is stopped. She was about to get up when she spotted something coming towards her out of the Mist. It a ball of bright rainbow colored light. She was about to run when the thing took on a familiarity. She remembered seeing it somewhere before and then it hit her. It was her old friend. As she ran to it, it unballed and was a small scaled dragon with rainbow colored scales and blue eyes. It had no wings, though. Heartsong cried out for joy,"Woosa, I never expected to see you again. I thought I had lost you when I entered this world. How did you get here?" Woosa laughed and grabbed Heartsing in a hug as she landed on her knees to be at eyelevel. "Since you have been finding homes for our orphans and being nice to everyone, I was allowed to come. Besides, how couls I resist picking on furball since she got big." As if that were a cue, Apache leaped out of the Mist to tumble the little dragon. Then she minsends: I am not the same little cub you can push around anymore. I just might bite. Woosa laughed and mocked,"Oh foo foo, your just an overgrown pussy cat. You would not hurt a fly." Then they all laughed togetherand ran off to join the dancing in the Hall. Sorry it got so long, but it has been a few days and I wanted to welcome all the newbies and make them feel at home. On a dicusion note, does anyone know who the wizard from SB was that brought Iftel's people there and what happened to him. I thought did not think that he was part of Vkandis. Was he?
