Elsa ablidgingly shrieked and laughed merrily, then peeked out from under the water-proof-plastic-covered towel that had protected all but her ponytail and her neck from the water."Thanks,I will,"she replied to the now far away slosher. She unwrapped the towel and used to dry her sopping hair, then wrapped it around her head turban-style,tucked the magic mirror into her belt and regards the small dragonet asleep on the huge towel Stasia had given her. "Looks a lot like my old friend Potato,"she thought,"Only not green and MUCHO tiny in comparison. Hearing the splashing from the hottubs and inately sensing that not even as formidable a slosher as Seashimmer could make that much splashing, she heads in closer, carrying the small dragon she appears to have been saddled with---not that she's harboring any negative feelings for the giver or the gift---and sees that it is a pool complex.A thought forms,a brilliant and inspired idea.A huge smile cracks her face like a sudden thunder storm as she realises that it doesn't matter if she's sloshed if she's already in water!!! Elsa hastily makes her way to the pools, avoiding any and all sloshers. She comes to a private hot pool, moderately sized and shielded from view by trees, bushes and ferns(which is good because she's to shy to strip and swim in mixed company). She places her clothes inside the plastic wrapping(in case of slashing),gently eased the sleeping baby dragon onto a warm rock, and(still wearing her tunic) wades into te pool. Mostly, though, I think that it's because Misty has more Valdemar books out then any others. A lot of her others aren't well-read, and/or they're hard to find, and/or they're stand-alones, so if a person reads them, and isn't particle interested in it, he/she won't search out other book's of Misty's. Skywolf entered the Hall quietly as she could. She hadn't been here in a while; the constraints of the Banal had held far to strong of a grasp on her to get away. But now she was back and all the more soul happy she could be. She changed out of her dusty softball uniform with a wave of her hand and appeared again in a vaugly Victorian dress of deepest deepest green. Her jade Dragon necklace nustled in between her breasts glinted as though alive. Misha, her wolf friend, padded at her side, swinging eyes the exact same color of Skywolf's jade back and forth through the room taking in all of the newbies. She smiled at the sight of the newbies being welcomed so - wetly-. Skywolf quietly made her way to the drinks where she got a glass of white Zinfidel. She hoped not to atract much attention, being mostly a lurker herself, except when the swing dance music was on. Then she just couldn't help herself. She found a small tabled tucked half in the light of the Hall, half out, and comfortably in the range to hear all of the conversations going on. Misha sat by her side for a while, but padded off when she noticed a couple wolves and an -owl?- playing around, hoping to join in on the fun. Misha looked back once to Skywolf to see if it was alright to leave her thus, but Skywolf just smiled and nodded. It felt good to be back. That he exposed such pain at all took great courage, that he did it so eloquently is an inspiration to us all. I enjoyed the change in perspective. As a "larger" woman for most of my life, I know how it goes from a female perspective; it was enlightening to hear about it from the masculine side of the fence. I remember a dance, the first dance of the year in my new neighborhood. I stood around for hours, watching all the women who weren't me getting asked to dance. [I'm outgoing with people I know, but occasionally awkward in new situations.] Then I went home, bawled in the bathroom for a while, and came back for some more abuse. The irony is, I knew, once they knew me, I'd have plenty of partners. One of the advantages of my larger size is, I had to concentrate on developing a personality, interesting conversation, etc. The only one who asked me to dance the whole evening was my roomate's boyfriend; what's that about? I just wanted to dance with those guys, not marry them. But, especially in high school or college, that meat-market mentality is definitely there. Even when you know it's silly, it still hurts. Fortunately for me, I found the sf clubs on campus about then, a supportive group which truly celebrated diversity. Elven feasts, Darkover festivals, and "Darth Claus" flourished alongside each other. We shared our interests and respected each other. I miss it still, mired as I am in the morass of factional fandom that is RL around my town. Perhaps that's why I enjoy the Halls of Mist so much. Discussion and diversity of opinions are encouraged, in a supportive environment of mutual respect. Even when discussion is heated, it's kept within bounds--one way or another . One thing we started back then which might benefit those of you in small sf clubs or other groups, particularly where lots of you want to be writers was the Create Your Own World series. We would get professors from different departments of the university to talk to us about creating realistic worlds in their area of expertise. Our beloved Mage of Green Silences, for example, might speak about linguistics: consistent systems, common phenomena, etc. The list of potential speakers is as endless as your imagination. I offer the idea, for what it's worth. Some people gift flowers or jewelry; I give ideas. ObMisty: In the picture of Natoli in _Storm Warning_, was I the only one who noticed that her ear is down below her jaw? Is Larry giving her that Minbari look, or what? Well, doesn't that figure? I go for an ObMisty, and it turns into an ObB5. How about this: I wonder whether the same dichotomy in clothing styles exists on Velgarth that we see in women's clothes in the U.S., namely that larger women are expected to wear polyester and/or flowers, and smaller women are expected to wear tank/tube tops in loud, neon colors. Misty's made enough costumes in her time that we get a considerable clothing commentary in her various works. Well, mostly, what I meant is that there are two possibilities. One: Misty's descriptions in the text are exactly what she intended the characters to look like and Larry just didn't do a good job of drawing them. Two: Larry worked with Misty and drew pictures that are accurate renditions of what she was visualizing and that the miss-match with the descriptions in the text is because Misty has problems creating textual descriptions that result in accurate mental images in the reader. My personal feeling is that (2) may be the case. After all, it is very difficult to describe someone so accurately that the listener/reader gets a mental image that matches the speaker/writer's image. That's why police sketches are such a specialized task. I suspect that Larry and Misty collaborated on the pictures (she may have told him that a picture was more or less what she had in mind), but that the textual descriptions (which are pretty vague) just don't give a really accurate idea of what she had in mind. It's even worse than that! I think that crafts are art. And I think that art is partly just the pure techniques and partly the inspired application of those techniques. The inspiration lies in choosing what to create (subject matter, in representational arts) and in the exact techniques that are applied in a given work. Whether an artist is a good artist can be judged both on what they choose to create (their "inspiration") and their technical skills. Certainly, not everyone can have the same quality of "inspiration" (some people are just more creative than others). But I would argue that the criticisms of most author's work have been more on the technical level (the way in which the story is told). And to answer the underlying question, yes, I think that a person who has made complaints about someone else's work should at least try to do the same kind of work and do a better job of it (at the very least, a more technically proficient one). So, if we don't like things that Misty has been doing in her writing, then we should try and write something similar and do a better job. Then, we can complain from the "moral high ground." If we don't even try, we are simply complaining about something that we have no real knowledge about (we don't know how hard it is to do what she does, and therefore it is easy to say "well, she should have done such and such"). Actually, Misty specifically said that the power source for the White-Winds adepts was not a "node." It was a reservoir of power that was collected by the mages of the school and could be accessed by the adept-level mages. The implication that I got from the description (in OBreakers, IIRC) was that the reservoir was an extra-dimensional thing and was not located at a specific physical location. Hmmmm. This brings up an interesting idea: after the Mage Storms, when the nodes and ley-lines (the natural reservoirs of magical energy) had been dispersed, would mage schools like White Winds have an advantage. Presumably, their power source, lacking a locus in the real world, may not have been affected by the storms (I haven't read Owlflight, so I don't know what light it might shed on things). Well, both the Lady of Shallot and the Leyse/Lancelot meeting in "The Darkest Road" are based on the archetypal meeting of Lancelot and Elaine. The Leyse episode is sort of a conflation of two different Elaine episodes in the legend of Lancelot: Elaine of Shallot and Elaine, the mother of Galahad. Both Elaines were women that loved Lancelot and to whom he could not return the love (because of his exclusive love of Guinevere). GGK was specifically trying to evoke that partof the Lancelot/ Guinevere/Arthur story. BTW, just as a reminder. Let's try and keep the fluff under control. There have been a lot of posts recently that are nothing more than role-playing in the Halls of Mist and long "welcome posts". Didn't created animals have to be able to breed? Okay. just grabbed MPrice. It was actually by the computer! MPrice, pp248-9 "It was mostly like a raven, but with toothed-beak, evil red eyes, and powerful legs that ended in feet bearing knife-sharp, hand-sized talons. "Not even the Tayledras knew all of the creatures that roamed the Pelagirs, but somehow this bird-thing didnt have the feeling of anything natural--if that word could ever be applied to a beast from that magic-haunted area. Still, the bird looked wrong; the teeth were too long for it to be able to actually eat with them, and those claws were no good for anything except rending. Certainly it couldn't perch on anything like a tree limb with those talons. And how would it feed young? "...and close examination of the rear proved what he had suspected. It had no genital slit; in fact, it had nothing at all, not even a vent. It was as featureless as a feather-covered egg. "It was a construct, a one-of-a-kind, probably created specifically for this task out of a real raven. The only way it could obtain nourishment would be magically; it was utterly dependent on the mage that created it, and there would be no young that might escape the mage's control." >From the impression I got reading MWars and the others, there have been no other species created since the Cataclysm BY MAGES, there have been those warped by thwe Storms, but that could almost be taken as a natural mutation given the circumstances. There have been no unnatural (by mages) species mutations since then. There were only constructs like our friend here and the Krashak (sp) in Oathbreakers. If the White Winds reservoir was actually situated in the Void, woldn't it have been affected by the first artifact explosion? Didn't that disrupt the magic in the Void? It didn't affect the physical plane, right, so it had to affect the other. ?? I noticed that myself. There wasn't anything else mentioned about Tarma dying, but she was in her 60's right? Or sees her and in some way it was either stated or heavily hinted at that it was Tarma. I cried because it was the first reference we had to the fact that Tarma had died. But then it was cool to realize that she was still alive as a leshy'a Kal'enedral. I also have not read all the T and K stories. I'm hoping to get Oathblood sometime soon. I've been working on finding the S&S books. Does anyone else know of any other references to Tarma's death? Oh-- slightly on the same topic-- mages can extend their lifespan if they wish. It just depends on if that is what they want to spend energy on. I know this was discussed earlier and someone asked a question about it, (I thought). Tarma was really quite old at the beginning of BtS. Kethry didn't seem that old, but I have a feeling it was because she'd used magic to keep herself from aging. > >Oh, and btw, I think we should start an Order of Eldan Avocation. Now that her crazy school week is over, she finally was able to catch up fully on all the conversations and add more than just a line or two of thought. :I hope everyone recieved the brilliant sheep I sent: she thinks to herself. She spots the Vale-type pools and wanders over to them. She strips down, feeling slightly self-concious, but nobody pays attention to her, so she slips into a warm pool where several other list-members are chatting. :How wonderful!: She waits for more conversation so that she can join in. Elvenbane Message-ID: <3.0.1.32.19980327170909.006b7094-+AT+-pop.u.arizona.edu> One last thing I wanted to add to my braid was: I read Elvenbane over Spring Break. I really liked it. I thought the portrayal of elves was interesting. It kinda neat to look at how different authors portray different species/cultures. Think about how different they make elves, a fairly common creature of faery. My first elves were Santa's little helpers. I always pictured them as happy cheerful children-types. But in many Christmas movies I saw as a child, they always seemed so mean or something (not at all how I'd pictured them). It seems authors sort of agree upon how elves look and that they have magic, but not on if they are nice or not. Or they'll split them and call them dark elves, for evil, and light elves, for good. So, I have no point for that, I guess. What are the other books after Elvenbane? Sure, he can't do Shakespeare at all, he might as well be reading a foreign language. Sure, millions of girls will go see any movie he's in, regardless. But it hasn't always been that way. He is good. Pretty damn good (just as long as he *is not* doing any Shakespeare, or trying to) actually. He can't help the fact that millions of fans adore him, he just acts. And you can't deny that he is talented. If you want to hate someone, hate the fans and the media who have made him the icon that he is. I'm sure he likes it, who wouldn't like fame and fortune, but I'm also sure that he would still be acting regardless of whether he was this famous or not. And who knows, give him a few more years, and some lessons, and the boy just might be able to do Shakespeare someday. He has the capability, he probably just needs to put some work in and learn the language. Shakespeare never came easy to anyone, but I think if he understood what he was saying, he might do it just fine, maybe. That's all I have to say, and I'm not going to say anything further on the subject. :) Even if I have to tape my fingers together. :) You're living in America At the end of the millenium You're living in America leave your conscious at the tone And when you're living in America At the end of the millenium You're what you own -"What You Own" from _Rent_ by Jonathan Larson Lady Becky of the Hills Goddess of Tofu and Dry Breakfast Cereals Handmaiden of Procrastination High Priestess of Hyperness and Overbubliness E-mail: beckah-+AT+-usa.net ICQ: 3733571 ____________________________________________________________________ Get free e-mail and a permanent address at http://www.netaddress.com ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 1537 **********************************
