Well, how could you not, Van dreamt of him since book one. So when I read the Winds books, I thought Leareth and Falconsbane were the same person. When Leareth was killed, he just moved on to a new body. Having said this. I think Leareth was capable of creating a new creature, if he had the strength. Marty, I just wanted to say that I emphathize with you. I was on the other side of the spectrum in junior high school. I was a skinny girl with stringy hair who just never got the knack of dressing or acting the right way and who _always_ kept a book or two in my back pocket in case I needed to disappear to a bathroom somewhere during some awful social event like a school dance and read until it was over. There's something distinctly humiliating about always being the odd one out especially when you're that age. And rather than comments about how I should go on a diet, I got comments about how I should seek help because it was obvious I was anorexic... (Please note that I am fully aware that anorexia and bulimia are certainly a problem, especially in adolescent girls, and that people who do have this problem should certainly seek help --- but I was certainly not anorexic and got really sick of being accused of being one.. accused being the key word here) And even though I eventually grew out of my spindliness and filled into a somewhat more conventional appearance (though I've never got that "right dressing" stuff down), I think a very core part of me will always be that shy skinny nerd girl who never quite fit in anywhere. I think that is why Misty's work has always drawn me so. Most if not all of her heroes are unconventional outcasts thrust into extraordinary circumstances It's the very things that make them outcasts that make them interesting: Talia with her dreams and books and self-doubts, Rune with her music and her stubborness, Vanyel with his exterior arrogance and remoteness. I think I might even go so far as to venture a guess that perhaps the reason that folks don't seem to like Elsbeth as much as some of Misty's other characters is that she isn't quite as odd or outcast or interesting as an adult. (Though I think she was much more interesting as a child in Talia's stories when she had to overcome being the "Royal Brat") Does anyone else have any opinions on this? ------- >From kenny-+AT+-UDel.Edu Fri Mar 27 14:50:02 1998 > But I would argue that the criticisms of most author's work have been > more on the technical level (the way in which the story is told). I'm not sure I entirely agree with you. It depends on what your definition of "complaint" is. I think if someone says "I think so-and-so's latest book sucks" with no more comment than that, it's pretty pointless and doesn't do anyone any good. But if the "complaint" is "I think so-and-so's latest book is much more formulaic than previous books and this is why...", I think such comments can generate much thought and discussion which I refuse to believe is bad or wrong. Ultimately, that discussion is going to make you think and meditate more on the book than you would have before which really is the whole point of groups like this one. And I can speak only for myself here, but when I take the time and effort to discuss a book or a specific topic in a book, it usually means I think it's worth discussing. For instance, I think Heinlein's _Stranger in a Strange Land_ is fascinating book for its depiction of "the other" and the subculture which grows up and changes around the main character. Is it believable? That could be an interesting discussion. But I ain't even going to touch his treatment of women in the book.. it's just not even worth it. > So, if we don't like things that Misty has been doing in her writing, > then we should try and write something similar and do a better job. > Then, we can complain from the "moral high ground." If we don't even > try, we are simply complaining about something that we have no real > knowledge about (we don't know how hard it is to do what she does, and > therefore it is easy to say "well, she should have done such and such"). I agree with you in that it certainly is easy to say how something could have been better. But I don't think that someone has to have "been there, done that" in order to complaint about something. If that was true, then we'd all have to have our lips buttoned up for the rest of our lives. (which... well, on second thought, might be the answer to world peace :) ) For instance, I reserve the right to complain about certain government policies or how policians behave themselves even though I certainly am never planning on running for office and thus am ignorant about the pressures of such a position or dealing constantly with conflicting interests. Perhaps it is wrong of me to complain, but (by gawd!) I'm going to complain anyway! (though not on this list) Anyway, I've rambled long enough. Thank you to those of you who made it down this far before skipping to the next message ;) -k __________________________________________________________________________ | Kris Frye | "These are not the droids we are looking for." | | kfrye-+AT+-reed.edu | http://www.reed.edu/~kfrye | ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Mar 1998 21:35:30 -0400 From: "Nelson Greenslade" To: "Misty" Subject: Re: To the defense of Leo..... For example, I learned how to play the clarinet decently in my high school band but I will never be on par with Benny Goodman, Pete Fountain, or any other great clarinetist. Well, I don't have a speech impediment, but I do hate the sound of my own speaking voice. I'm 33, but I sound like I'm 12. It's very high-pitched. Don't feel too bad about being boyfriendless. I never dated at all in high school and wasn't asked to the prom, but I'm happily married now. ///// Re: Leonardo DiCaprio I enjoyed him in _Titanic_ and in _The Man in the Iron Mask_--though I truly deplored the fact that he didn't bother to learn a French accent for the role. On the other hand, I do prefer no accent to a bad one...(g) I haven't seen him in _Romeo & Juliet_, so I can't comment on how he did in that movie. The problem with R and J is that to do Shakespeare, it's best if you're a seasoned actor who has studied the culture in which Shakespeare wrote, and who understands all of the puns and in-jokes that he included in his plays, the better to deliver your lines. Unfortunately, R and J have to be played by young, relatively unseasoned actors, so the quality isn't quite as good as you typically get in, say, _Hamlet_. ///// Re: I want to be an Eldan Knight or whatever! All this Eldan stuff has got me thinking...For some reason, it never dawned on me that a person could just suggest an Order, like the OAM or the LPW, etc. I don't know why; I mean, they all had to start somewhere. Anyway--Folks, I would very much like to start an Admiration Order of some kind for Grand-Duke (later King) Tremaine. He's not handsome, he's not flashy, he's not brilliant, like Vanyel or Firesong, etc., but by the gods, he's everything that counts! He has all the qualities that are important to me. Is there anyone 'official' who I should go through to start this? Would anyone like to stand with me and count yourself a Friend of Tremaine? Please let me know in a braided message or in private email. She waves to her listsib friends and places the platter on a centrally located table for everyone to enjoy. "Have some quesadillas, virtually beamed over from Ninfa's!" She grins happily. "I'm getting a wonderful, new book tomorrow--Reconstruction of Life from the Skeleton." ::Snoopy dance!!!:: "Gods, I wish I'd had this when I took Archaeology in college. I could have written a really neat paper." ::blissful sigh:: ::Aerden looks at her, then at the listsibs:: "She's just my author. Concerning the farie tales: If you like the more uncolored versions of the stories you might like Tanith Lee's book Red As Blood it has a few twists on the original versions of some stories like Cinderella, Red riding hood, and many more. FLUFF ------------------------------------------- Barbara wanders around and finds the hot tub and sinks in. Suddenly a fluffy stuffed himylayin(sp) cat appears on her clothes. She lookes at the collar around it's neck, it reads `This cat will keep you company whenever you need her just call her name and she will come to you. Her name is Whiskers From Heartsong.' She thinks to herself *I must find heartsong and thank her for these gifts, first the Apache Tear and now this beautiful cat.* She looks around for her aquatic sheep Asari, finding that she is playing with some of the other sheep and goes looking for Heartsong. *There she is* Barbara makes her way across the hall and comes to a stop in front of Heartsong. I found these two charaters in there that have two stories so far, I'm on page159 right now. They are called Martis and Lyran and I found myself hungry for another taste of their lives. WHAT is a kitsune?!?!?!?!?! WHAT?!?!?! You don't know what a kitsune is? What have you been readin?!?!?! One word of advice; read _Chrome Circle_. It's the book that deals mostly with the kitsune and the structure of Underhill society. Basically, a kitsune is a Japanese fox-spirit. Mostly they are tricksters, whose only real enjoyment comes from playing tricks on others. The Hermes' of Japanese mythology. The stronger they are, the higher number of tails they have. As far as has been shown, nine is the highest number of tails one can have. FX (aka Fox, Foxtrot X-ray, Saski Berith) has four at the end of _Chrome Circle_, and Shar (Tannim's half-kitsune, half-dragon gf) has nine. I hope this helps a little. Ok so his is an actor, with good and bad qualities, but he is also a human, not a god, he isn't perfect and I'm sure everyone including him knows it. I won't deny that he has a bit of acting talant and I won't deny that he is nice looking, but so are a zillion other people whom are NOT actors and or actresses. You don't "yell" over them.......: *down on hands and knees* :Please lets just leave it at that he is another person like you or me. He is human as are we. I won't discredit or priase him for being human as we all are but I will give him credit where it is due.: Chenci flaps his white wings in irritation Freedom looks around her at her listsibs with pleading eyes. :Let us talk about Misty and her many talants. There are those who don't like her. there are those who don't like Leo. There are those (us) who like Misty, and there are those (some of which are us some of which are not) who like Leo. Or both, or one, or none. Can we just leave Leo at the door unless for some reason he joins this fine list, in which I am sure we could make him decently welcome however unlikely it is....: Freedom gets up with a questioning gaze. :I am rather new here and I don't think I had the right to say the half of what was said but..... I think if I had not no one would have and we could have gone on forever about him, and he isn't worth arguing over. As for me I am neutral about him. I think in cases such as Titanic they could have done better maybe. But then again it wouldn't be the same..... I'll let it drop now. Sorry I kinda yelled.: Freedom blushes red and Chenci hops around on her shoulder. Question :I had to read The Mage Wars twice before I fully understood it... did anyone else have this problem or am I alone in that, and if I'm not any ideas why, or how I could understand it better?: Freedom looks around for a possable advisor and Chenci tilts his head. :Thank you for being so kind to me, I hope I have not oversteped my place.....: Freedom tries to make a graceful exit even as she feels shamed.
