I'm saying this cause I always thought that mind-magic was something you just HAD, not in potential or anything. Another thing that confused me was in AotQueen I think someone mentions about most herald-trainees develop mind-magic (Sorry I can't include the quote, I've lent the book to a friend, why I did this I don't know.) This, taken in conjunction (I can't believe I just said that!) with that guy from Obound, the one who Kethry put that illusion of being a woman on, he was supposed to have mind-magic. For my English class, we have to read an example of a female writer's literature and do a paper related to feminism (for or against) and of course I'm reading "By the Sword" again. However, I need biographical info about Misty. Does anyone know where I can find a short (1-2 pages) biography of her (on or off Internet)? Fluff: Reighvyn lifts her crimson skirt and delicately steps over a puddle of saltwater gathering on the stone floor, to approach a Newbie lurking in the shadows. "Cymrey, I'm very glad you joined us. But let me give you a word of warning: watch for people with buckets. Besides that, I hope you enjoy yourself, and, well. . .here!" Reighvyn hands Cymrey a silver pendant of a sheep that, when you rub it's sterling fur, the legs move, suspended on a necklace. "Have fun. I have to admit that it's not as good as a real one, but I have a slight allergy to wool." With that, Reighvyn tucks a stray curl behind her ear, executes a neat curtsey to the bewildered Cymrey, and picks her way through the crowd to where someone is playing a lute. +++++++++++++++++++++++--------------------------+++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++ Reighvyn Emrys Daughter of the Queen of Rynia Mercenery and Advocate of Women's Rights Member (hopefully) of the Order of the Appreciation (??) of Eldan ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Mar 1998 23:36:17 -0600 From: Amanda Carlston To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Bedlam's Bard/fluffy Message-ID: <199803290536.XAA54692-+AT+-gomer.wiscnet.net> Reighvyn wrote: Business first: I just (this afternoon) bought uh. . .Bedlam's Bard & I read the first book. I agree - I think that Tremane is the kind of character that is often sorely missing in Lackey's work. Her characters are often painted in black and white. The good guys are obviously good and the bad are insidiously evil. Sometimes her attempts at ambiguous characters seem rather forced, such as the brief period in which Firesong becomes psychotic. Tremane, however, is a delightfully well-fleshed character. His grit is real, his heart is apparant and his conflict between duty and righteousness is amazingly honest. I would also like to say that I think Solaris has a wonderful duality to her - she is the god-ordained High Priestess of her order, yet is not a bleached-out paragon of goodness. Her rough edges are VERY clear. >Don't get me wrong but I think that sex is a prime motivator of lifebonds (e.g. Van and Stef >don't realize theirs until Stef seduces him!) OK - I'll grant you that Vanyel didn't acknowledge the lifebond until after they had been intimate, but Vanyel did experience strange feelings around Stef after their first meeting. It seems important that Van did not admit that he was attracted to other men until after he and Sted had their first encounter. Also telling is the fact that Daren and Selenay were instantly lifebonded upon meeting. I forget Daren's Companion's name, but I think he said something like "Hmm, See something you like?" when the two of them came face to face for the first time and were poleaxed by the meeting. > Whoo hoo!! Please don't tell me that Neil Patrick Harris replaced Anthony Rapp as Mark. I think that I will throw myself off the highest building. I had missed out on this particular piece of information. As a professional actor who specializes in musical theatre, I am incredibly offended by this. (Also, I think that I should have been the one to replace Rapp ) After all, Jonathon Larson deliberately hired non-Union, non-famous actors for the show. To replace one of them with a "name" actor, As a bit of interest, a guy I worked with for a couple of summers in summer stock worked with Larson of several of his earlier off-off-B'way shows and was asked to be in Rent by Larson himself. The teasers are written to be intriguing, not accurate. The odds are that a dedicated reader of ML would not bother to read the teaser, but would go ahead and buy the book. The new readers, however, have to be GRABBED!. >I'm saying this cause I always >thought that mind-magic was something you just HAD, not in potential or >anything. The impression I get from the later-era Valdemar books is that mind-magic exists in potential in lots of people, but being Chosen tends to bring these gifts out. It would seem that Companions choose people for the qualities possesed and not for the gifts. The gifts are stimulated by the bond and brought out of quiessence. TTFN, John E. On a less frivolous (sp?) note, I am making a quickie comment on the ammount of Fluff on the List. Yes, I am a Knight of Fluff, but it says in the Fluffian Order's Creed that we are not here to agravate others with too much Fluff (no matter how interesting/funny etc.) Yes, I am enjoying the story line and all the RPing going on, but could we pretty please cut down a tad? We're here to discuss an author that we all like and admire, and if you do add some Fluff to your letter, could you all please make it equal to or less than the ammount of Misty content in your letter? I'm finding myself skipping over a heck of a lot of it because I can't keep up with it all. *sheepish look* "Baaaa!" Oh heck. Here's a suggestion; maybe we could have a Fluff day where we could all write our single letter as entirley Fluff if you so wish, and then leave the rest of the week as Misty related? Maybe we could do Saturday, as that's the day when we do the Ring Thing anyways. :) Councellors? Heartsong wrote: >Does anyone else read Andre Norton books? Where is that sheep noise coming from?! Did anyone else notice that the Keplains are really close to the European myth of the Kelpie? Kelpies are too knowen to carry off the unwary rider, although it is to just give them a good dunking. ;) Even the discriptions are the same - beautiful black horse. :) But that's off on a tangent - I really loved the Elvenbane book - I'm scouring the bookstores (1st and 2nd hand) for a copy. It's a really neat twist on elves, and it's not your usual elf/human/dragon type book. :) I also thought that Misty and Norton created a world with almost equal depth to it as Valdemar! *shocked look* I found Elvenblood as a bit of a let-down, though. It's plot didn't seem quite as strong. Well, my brain has run dry - good sour-candy sheep to you all! :) Oh greeat... now -I- wanna sour candy thingie... *grumble, grumble* Yvonne Shadowshape, bonded to Chiti, Chosen by Korla Goddess of Kelpies, Selkies, and the other Water-Borne Knight of Fluff Bearer of the Enchanted Bucket (tm) *&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&* The Nerids pluck their lyres Where the green translucncy beats And with motionless eyes at gaze Make minstrily in the streets -Walter de la Mare, Sunk Lyoness ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Mar 1998 15:54:50 -0600 From: Tara Stewart To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Karal and Savil Message-ID: <351EC32A.4D2651DC-+AT+-tyler.net> Greetings all! I'm a newbie to this list, but I guess that's obvious. :) Anyways, on to business. > Also I think Sayvil is one of the coolest female characters in the > Valdemar series. Kerowyn has always been my personal favorite. I think the no-nonsense attitude appeals to me. Talia runs pretty close behind, mainly because she reminds me of myself. Savil would just be right after that. I can't really say WHY I like Kero more, unless it was because I met her first. As far as Karal goes, he may not have an entire trilogy to himself, but he DOES get quite a bit of time in SB. I would like to see more of him though. I also want to put my vote in for an order of unsung heroes for those great guys like Karal, Tremaine, Kris, et al. Oh yeah...and what about Dirk? Great guy with almost no stage time at all. Which brings me to: Lifebonds. I remember reading a question someone had about whether sex was necessary for a lifebond to form. In AFall, someone remarks that Talia and Dirk probably were lifebonded when they first set eyes on each other. They both certainly recognized it before they had sex. Just my $.02 worth. 'Nuff ramblings for now. :) May your socks always be dry, Taigan -- \=/, _ | -+AT+-___oo ( Tara Stewart /\ /\ / (___,,,}_--= elspeth-+AT+-tyler.net ) /^\) ^\/ _) =__ www.tyler.net/tara ) /^\/ _) (_ IRC ChatNet nick: Taigan ) _ / / _) ( ICQ UIN: 4172826 /\ )/\/ || | )_) < > |(,,) )__) Any technology || / \)___)\ distinguishable from magic | \____( )___) )___ is insufficiently advanced. \______(_______;;; __;;; --- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Mar 1998 17:44:09 -0500 From: darvoso To: Lackey List Subject: I wonder... Message-ID: <351ECEB8.164D5167-+AT+-fortwayne.infi.net> I'm new to the list too, in fact, just found it today after reading the end of the Winds of Fury [Lackey's bio] and noting that there was some online stuff..at least, that's what *she* said. :) So I thought I'd take a look, and lo and behold, I found something! Onto the semi-prevelant part of this message. I'm wondering wether anybody knows if Lackey plans to write any more on the Velgaroth series, and if so, what? Usually she has a list of projects todo on the timeline at the beginning of the books, but in Storm Breaking, [at least my copy], it doesn't show any 'in the works' books. So I be wondering....Oh well, I guess that's all for me.... I've read a few books by Andre Norton (Who I thought was a man for a time *embarrassed blush*).I've read either Elvenbane or Elvenblood--the one where the dragon thinks the 1/2 elf is a dragon caught in a morph. I've read one of the Witchworld books--the one with the minstrel where she sings Lord Faral's Race and puts a curse on some "lord".I think that's it. I've looked at some of the other books around, but I don't THINK I've read any... I've been reading the Velgarth books, the Bardic Voices trilogy, and I've read Bedlam Boys,Knight of Ghosts and Shadows,Summoned to Tourney, and Elvendude...I want to read the SERRAted Edge series, I really do,I just can't find any of them.*whine, whine* Hey,has anyone here ever been to Davastaions Lair?? It's the neatest site!! I know Dava from a chat room, and he is the authority on dragons!! There isn't a thing about them that he doesn't know!!!! *dazzled smile and enthusiastic hugs to all* Fluff Alert!! Beep!! Beep!! Beep!!(I don't know what's gotten into me!!) *~*~*~*~*~*~*~**~*~*~*~*~*~*~**~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Elsa skips happily into the Hall,a huge smile on her face as she balances a triple decker chocolate fudge devil's foodcake with super dark semisweet chocolate icing on her head.Amazingly,it doesn't tip (I am a master of balancing stuff on my head) and doesn't appear to weigh her down at all. She sets it on a table in the middle of the Hall, then takes of her haversack and pulls out plates, forks, glasses, a HUMONGOUS pitcher of cool milk and a freezer full of ice cubes. She cuts herself out a hefty wedge of cake, then plunks some icecubes in a glass with milk.Holding up her fork, she announces (and trust me everyone would hear me announce anything;I'm very loud) "Attendez vous!!! I made cake!! Dig in, all!!" With that, she goes and finds a comfortable armchair under a maple tree and begins to devour her snack, careful not to get any icing on her red, white, and black skirt. The cake is gone from hr plate in a matter of minutes. She washes it down with her milk, then crunches thoughtfully on her ice cubes.Pulling her sketchbook out of her bag, she begins drawing faeries, centaurs, satyrs, nymphs and manitous in a misty glade, cavorting around a couple standing on a mossy rock next to a waterfall. The girl in the picture is a redhead, and bears remarkable resemblance to the artist. She wears a filmy white shift and a white and gold skarf trails from her fingers. The man is blond, taller than than the other. His ears are pointed and he exudes the fey grace of the sidhe. He appears to be either blacing a crown of flowers over the girls head,or removing it.Both seem obblivious to the celebration around them, they have eyes only for each other. Finishing the drawing,Elsa flips the page and starts another picture, this one again featuring herself but wearing azure pajamas instead of a dress. In the picture, she appears to be leaning against a large, emerald green dragon, who almost appears to be speaking to her.The pair are in a forest, and just beyond a stand of trees can be seen a tall, brown haired girl wearing purple pajamas and a cape(or is that a blanket) leaning on a glaive and talking to a short, cute guy in blue mage's robes and a skeleton wearing a sword. *~*~*~*~*~*~**~*~*~*~*~*~*~**~**~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* End of Fluff Bye all!!
