The Order everyone seems to be talking about at the moment is a(proposed)Order to appreciate the 'less appreciated' characters of Velgarth: Karal, Tremaine, An'desha, maybe others(not sure if it's just less appreciated male characters or females too, I can't remember everything on this thread). He is one of the most interesting Misty characters, IMNSHO. He isn't a perfect angel, or a demon, like most of the characters seem to be. I doubt it would change potential readers interest with the book much if it said Taledras adepts instead of Shin'a'in adepts, and it would certainly make us happy. . . There was another post I wanted to reply to, but AOL has decided to make it unreadable in the past 15 minutes ::sigh::. Oh well. Now for something new-ish (at least I think)- on page 377 of Storm Rising it says "and since [the Shin'a'in] were vowed to use no magic, we did not experience the effects of the mage-storms of the time." These are Mage Storms that tear up circles of land and replace them with other land, change animals to monsters, and turn areas of soil into fused glass just as physical effects; I can't imagine use of magic changing these much. The Valedemaran's don't really use magic at the time the Storms start, yet they have plenty of problems. So how did the Shin'a'in avoid them? Did the Star-eyed protect them? If so, why won't the gods help defend against the Storms in the Storms books? And on the fluff- I agree, it's very fun to read, but I would prefer it braided in with stuff that is at least vaguely on topic. Come on, there's lots of stuff to discuss. . . ^*^Claire Seashimmer Apprentice Splosher Acolyte of OOPS ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Mar 1998 20:52:16 PST From: "Kat McKinzie" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Elvenbane/Savil/fluff Message-ID: <19980330045217.21000.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> ----------------yvonne wrote---------------------------------------- I really loved the Elvenbane book- I'm scouring the bookstores (1st and 2nd hand) for a copy. I always liked Stef because he seemed like one of the ordinary guys to me. Someone who had talent yes, but who was really the foil to Van's greatness. He made Van more human and less "HEROIC". Plus, he and Skif are the two characters with the best sense of humor, which is requirement for me to love them. I always liked Leslac for the same reasons, despite his general annoyance ability. Have there been any comparable comic relief characters in the latest batch of Misty books? And, perhaps, since books are a reflection of their author, Misty's having a bit of a dry spell in her life?? I just think that a normal human being, herald or no would have to be more selfish than that to be considered a real person. I do however, like Kerowyn, who is my favorite character since she is rugged and in my opinion basically the best female protagonist one can create. The only thing I don't like her is that she chooses to live a life of celibacy-- sure, she has good reasons, but that just does not seem like the kind of thing a sensible person would do...all things in moderation, right? (I think that's Buddhist or something, I forget.) I also envy her Eldan. He seems too good to be true! On another note, for all those of you who enjoy reading fantasy magazines, two excellent ones are Marion Zimmer Bradley's Fantasy Magazine and Realms of Fantasy...I highly recommend either of them. Also, I am a poet among other occupations (like student, etc.) so if anyone else on this list would like to exchange poetry for criticism, etc., please email me at XcGRRLxc-+AT+-aol.com. Has anyone read Fiddler's Fair? It's really good! I especially like the story about the televangelist and the one about Isadora Duncan. I wish I could dance! In any case, this is my basic hello so if y'all would kindly respond I'd be much obliged! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Mar 1998 14:47:45 -0600 From: Amanda Carlston To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: vanyel/kerowyn/misty Message-ID: <199803302047.OAA93130-+AT+-gomer.wiscnet.net> Okay. (I think that's Buddhist or something, I >forget.) I also envy her Eldan. He seems too good to be true! Okay, Heralds AREN'T self-serving. At all. It's been brought up more then once that the Healers just couldn't understand that at all. Heralds are trained to give everything in defense of those who need it. *Ashandra is REALLY wishing that she hadn't left the Arrows trilogy at home...* I think it's in AFall that we see this mostly, all around the death of one herald. First is the herald who was training the young woman, who had just gotten her Whites (I hope someone know the two I am talking about, because I can't remember their names!!!) Then we see it in Dirk. This is what breaks up the friendship of Kris, Dirk, and Talia in the first place, because Dirk blames himself for the girl's death and starts drinking too much. And Vanyel didn't start out as non-self-serving. He started out as a little brat, until he and 'Lendel fall in love. And after 'Lendel's death, there is a long time, even after he has been Choosen that the only thing that he thinks about is himself. Sorry if I seem just the tiniest bit defensive about this, but I love Vanyel. I do like Kerowyn a lot too, so I'll give you that. But when did she do the celibacy thing? I know that she did while she was still a mercenary, but I don't remember hearing anything about that after she met Eldan, except that I know that she didn't have any other lovers AFTER she got together with Eldan. Sheesh, I think that I've ranted long enough here. I'll end this for now. I don't have textevd (At a lab. Used up all my hours--ick) but it was something to the effect that Heralds /believe/ they have to be unselfish. Van, in his way, had his self-serving moments, but he had to devote his life to the greater good of Valdemar--all the more so because of his power. <> snip <> I like to think that I can be sensible, and I live a life just as celibate as Kero's. It's a personal choice, and Kero chose to remain celibate for (I think) very good reasons. It is possible (despite what many seem to think) to live celibate without running mad. I swear on a thousand woolly(sp?) sheep. I'd also like to mention that the only person I am currently jealous of is my crush's crush, and point ot that many people, myself included, tend to dislike things they have forced on them. There! You see? Not a word about you-know-who! (well, not directly, anyways) I just saw Grease!! Grease is the word!! (the relevance to this list will soon become apparent, never fear!) When I got home from the theater, I went to my chatroom and since I couldn't use my regular character due to several niggling little factors (such as dragons-trapped-in-human-bodies getting drunk and trying to kill "me", insanely jealous and extremely prejudiced female black dragons getting territorial about drunken-dragons-trapped-in-human-bodies and their mates{we're just friends/rivals! I swear!},etc.) I decided to make a new character!! With Grease playing itself repeatedly in my head, and the ramblings of this list jumping up and down for attention in my skull, I created . . . . . Eldan Windriver!!! Gee, can you guess WHERE I came up with the name? Durrr... Anywho, here's his descrip/entrance(or a slightly approved approximation thereof): "The stranger was of average height, making him one of the shortest people is the room, discounting the perverted pixie. He appeared to be fit, muscled but slender;a dancer's body. His face was hidden in the shadow of his cloak. He wore worn tan pants, high black boots covered with dust from the road, and a patched and faded red vest over a bone-white longsleeved shirt. His dark grey cloak swirled back to reveal a plain sword hanging from his belt at one hip,and an equally unadorned dagger riding opposite. He sat on one of the high wooden stools at the bar and drew back his hood. His facial features were like those of Anthony Andrews and a young John Travolta combined for the best effect, with one exception; his eyes were a startling bright green. Tendrils of thick chestnut hair framed his face, having escaped from the leather tie at the nape of his neck. His ears were almost entirely hidden, except a glint of gold in one lobe. He spoke softly to the barkeep, ordering a mug of ale, then looked around the tap room, searching the faces of the other patrons." Uhhh...aheh heh...*sweatdrop* I got kinda carried away there! Ha ha ha ha... *sweatdrop* The original description wasn't ~quite~ so detailed... But he gets more fun to describe every time I do it!! It's like an addiction!! *grabs a nearby fluffy sheep to wipe off the sweatdrops. The sheep Baaa's in surprise* Anywaaaayyyyy... I've decided that Eldan is one of those guys that speak softly and carry a sharp sword! *g* He's part elf, probably a quarter, but which kind I haven't decided. There's aquatic, sylvan, moon, and gold to choose from, as well as the drow(dark elves) but there're already so many of ~those~ in the chatroom...maybe I'll have him be the illegitamate son of one of my other characters!! Naw, I've already done that 3 times... help?*big puppy dog eyes* I know!! *lightbulb* He could be the son of Arilyn Moonblade and Danilo Thann!! She's half-elf, and he's a lot like the Scarlet Pimpernel, whom Anthony Andrews played!!.... hmmm... I dunno... Ms. Cunningham (their creator and copyright holder) might not be to pleased about that... 'course, the chances of her finding out are slim, but still... Erg! What if she has demon-lawyers like Misty?! *huge multiple sweatdrops* Better not risk it!! ... ... ... besides, while I adore Danilo, I'm not really all that fond of Arilyn... Okay, getting away from Eldan (nooooooo!!), tomorrow is my last day of Artclass!! Yayy!! No more reproducing that dumb painting by Manet!!! No more putting up with Mr. Glennan!!! Oh joy, oh bliss!! Wednesday I start music!!! ... ... I wonder if I'll be playing the flute or the trumpet. The one I like because of (at the root of things) Misty made it sound so neat, and it's fun to Knight people with and it sounds nice, but on the other hand, the trumpet is LOUD (hee hee!), it doesn't give my hands arthritis, I like the wat IT sounds, too, and it gives me an excuse to exercise my lips (I do anyway). Oh well. I'm not all that good at either *g* We're starting with keyboard anyway. >:( I hate the Foundation program!!! What? Nevermind... Oathblood is finally in bookstores around here!! Yayy!! I can't wait to read it!!! Hmmm... the appeal of flashy characters... Well, they get your attention!! To tell the truth, I wasn't ALL that fond of Firesong,or even Talia in her later years, but I definately liked Stef and Van!! Why? Why do I love them so? Probably because they were meant to be, but they went through such pain... yeah, the pain was probably it. The feelings of alienation, and the morals versus lust crises they went through. I felt connected to Van in so many ways... even though I'm more like Stef, physically and personality-wise... Hey, lets add Aubri the Eternally Battered to the swelling list of under-appreciated characters!! Well, that's enough for now, I guess. My fingers are getting sore...
